In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the rising popularity of “pickleball.” Invented in 1965, this sport combines tennis, table tennis and badminton and is attracting people of all ages and backgrounds. Capitalizing on its popularity are plenty of businesses, athletic associations and even churches. This discussion delves into the uniqueness of pickleball but then goes further to discuss the broader relationship between churches and sports. Dr. White riffs on sports ministries and how churches can and must navigate the increasingly demanding world of youth sports. He also dives into the individual Christian's relationship to sports and the priority we give them in our lives. Episode Links Today's conversation was sparked by an article by Religion News titled, “Churches hope to tap the power of pickleball”, but as mentioned in the podcast, the church's relationship with sports dates back much further. You can read more about the history of sports ministry, provided by GameDay Sports Ministries HERE, or by The Christian Athlete HERE. Alexis mentioned a handful of past podcast discussions she and Dr. White had on a few aspects of modern culture that provide some helpful cultural context, such as the current pandemic of loneliness (CCP76: On the Never Marrieds), the desire for religious experiences (CCP145: On Whether Churches Should be Churchy), and why men are looking for “manly” churches (CCP135: On Women Leaving the Church). Pertinent to today's conversation is an exploration of the role of athletics in the lives of families. For more on that topic, here are some links you might be interested in checking out: Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra, “Youth Sports, Healthy Families, and the Future of the Church,” The Gospel Coalition. Melissa Steffan, “The Main Reason for Declining Church Attendance: Children's Sports?,” Christianity Today. More broadly, Dr. White discussed the way in which sports have become somewhat of a modern religion, with many attributing religious-like experiences to sports highlights or god-like statuses to athletes. To read more about that, here are some suggested resources: Kurt Streeter, “In Troubled Times, the Sports World Offers a Necessary Salve,” The New York Times. David Briggs, “The Final Four, travel teams and empty pews: Research on sports and religion,” The Association of Religion Data Archives. Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly, All Things Shining. David Brooks, “The Arena Culture,” The New York Times. While sports may seem to provide echoes of something truly transcendent, the real source can be found in the God of the Christian faith. Dr. White shares about C.S. Lewis' journey to God as captured in his autobiography, Surprised by Joy. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. Imagine a movie so perfectly crafted that Jack Nicholson improvs half his scenes, Leonardo DiCaprio plays a character in constant panic, and Mark Wahlberg steals the entire film in under 10 minutes of screen time. On today's episode, we once again dive into a movie that was maybe not as well known as it should've been, but to those who have seen it, it is a revered classic. This movie includes three Oscar winners and gives us one of our favorite reoccurring versions of Brendan Frazer- a fish out of water. What would it really be like to emerge into the world after 35 years in a bunker? Did Adam ever, ya know, do the thing we do when we are alone sometimes? Why was Eve such a bitch? Every once in a while, a story comes along that fundamentally shifts how we understand the human mind. Imagine losing all sense of past and future, stripped of language, logic, and identity. Imagine drifting into a state where the endless mental chatter disappears, and all that remains is the raw, undeniable presence of the present moment." Hmmm? Sounds nice no This is exactly what happened to Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained neuroanatomist, best-selling author, and one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World. At just 37 years old, a catastrophic stroke shut down the left hemisphere of her brain, forcing her into an extraordinary journey of survival, recovery, and insight. As a scientist, she had the rare opportunity to study her brain from the inside out, providing an unparalleled perspective on consciousness itself." This perspective is Dr. Jill's gift to the world. But Dr. Taylor's story isn't just about survival, it's about transformation. Over the course of eight years, she not only regained her cognitive abilities but emerged with a new understanding of the brain and how we engage with it. Her book, My Stroke of Insight, became a global phenomenon, and her famous TED Talk remains one of the most viewed of all time, forever changing how we think about left-brain and right-brain dynamics. Today, she continues to push the boundaries of neuroscience with her book Whole Brain Living, where she introduces the revolutionary concept of the Four Characters, distinct neural networks within our left and right hemispheres that influence the way we think, feel, and behave. Pertinent to our show and my work with the IRS (Interface Response System), she presents the Brain Huddle, a practice designed to help us understand, embrace and integrate all four characters in real-time, allowing us to consciously choose our preferred response to life's challenges rather than being ruled by programmed and conditioned reactions. Beyond her research, Dr. Taylor is also a passionate advocate for mental health, an artist, and an educator who helps people understand how to live more intentionally through the power of neuroplasticity. She shares her time between scientific research, speaking engagements, and her creative work, which is living proof that a balanced brain leads to a balanced life. In today's conversation, we're diving deep into her groundbreaking insights and exploring how her work aligns with the conscious decision-making framework of the Interface Response System (IRS). Can we learn to choose which hemisphere we engage with in the moment? Can we override our pre-programmed emotional responses and instead step into awareness, peace, and clarity? And if we can, how do we practice this in daily life for a more optimal experience? Let's find out. Join me as I sit down with Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor for a conversation that will challenge and change the way you think about thinking itself. Let's get into it. It's time to enter the world of the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. Today's new episode is going to prove without a doubt that 'My Cousin Vinny' is still an enjoyable movie. The evidence in this episode is going to show that Marissa Tomei deserved her supporting actress award win and that Joe Pesci inspired a whole new generation of attorneys with his modern day take of a lawyer in a crusty, old, southern boomer world. You will hear the testimony's of 3 passionate podcast hosts who most likely stole all their commentary and thoughts from other movie podcasts. As a listener, your verdict of this movie is gonna depend on what you think of the sworn testimony. Not what we think. What we think don't count. You're the jury. It's your job to decide what your modern day take is. We're gonna be asking you to return a verdict of not only a good modern day rating for this movie but we are also going to be asking your for a 5-star rating on Spotify and Apple Podcasts when you are done listening. British entrepreneur and investor Steven Bartlett launched his podcast, Diary of a CEO, in 2017. He quickly found an audience in the tech world, which gave him access to a wide range of celebrities and businesspeople from various domains. By 2024, the podcast became one of the top 5 in the world, netting Bartlett and his team a reported $25M this year alone. Yet as Bartlett's star rose, his guest list began becoming more and more suspect. Pertinent to our beat, contrarian wellness influencers and philosophers appeared, spreading Covid conspiracies and health misinformation. In his role as curious everyman, Bartlett rarely challenged their narratives, sometimes playing along with their conspiratorial hot takes to an audience in the millions. With two comedic giants at the forefront, does this buddy-travel movie hold up and speak through generational lapses? What's Neal's wife's problem? What's in Del's trunk?? How many f**ks does it take to f**k yourself? All this and more while we break down Planes, Trains, and automobiles. •0:00:00- Introductions/Reviews/Chats •0:05:45- Pertinent movie details •0:09:15- Memories of first viewing •0:13:00 - Critical and fan reviews •0:21:00 - Scene by scene breakdown •1:20:15- Modern day ratings —————————————————————— Learn more about your ad choices. This movie flopped at the box office when it was released but it became a true cult classic in the years to follow. I think we speak for many of you when we say that this movie was terrifying the first time we saw it as kids. Does Event Horizon have one the lowest nostalgic ratings we have given? Why did they waste so much money on terrible affects? Is the ship still haunted at the end of the movie? We tackle all of this and more in today's brand new episode. •0:00:00 - Introductions •0:03:00 - Memories of first viewing •0:06:30 - Pertinent movie details •0:09:45 - Critical and fan reviews •0:18:00 - Scene by scene breakdown •1:24:00 - Modern day ratings —————————————————————— SPONSORS: ****EveryPlate- Join EveryPlate today and pay only $2.99 per meal, PLUS get 50% off your first box, for all box sizes!
