In today's competitive marketplace, creating a strong brand and developing a product or service that meets market demands is paramount for success. Entrepreneurs and small business owners need to understand the significance of brand development in resonating with their target audience and differentiating from competitors. Understanding Brand vs. Logo vs. Identity Before we proceed, let's address a common misconception about branding. Many people use the terms "brand," "logo," and "identity" interchangeably, but they are distinct concepts. What is a Brand? Your brand is the perception people have of your company. It encompasses your values, mission, and the emotional connection you create with your audience. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, once said, "Your brand is what other people say about you when you're not in the room." This highlights the importance of how your brand is perceived. The Role of a Logo: A logo is a visual representation of your brand. It's an essential part of your identity, but it's not the whole story. Think of it as the face of your brand. A well-designed logo can be memorable and convey your brand's essence at a glance. Crafting Your Business Identity: Identity includes all the visual and tangible elements that represent your brand. This encompasses your logo, typography, color palette, and even the tone of your communication. Your business identity is how you present yourself to the world, and it should be consistent across all touchpoints. Developing a Recognizable Brand with B.A.C.O.N. Creating a brand that appeals to your target audience involves a strategic approach. One effective method is using the acronym B.A.C.O.N., which stands for Brand, Audience, Competition, Origin, and Need. B – Brand: Your brand should reflect your company's core values and mission. It should tell a story that resonates with your audience. One successful example is Glossier, whose founder Emily Weiss said, "The most successful brands are those that create a compelling emotional connection with their audience." A – Audience: Understanding your target audience is crucial. Conduct market research to identify their preferences, needs, and pain points. This will help you tailor your brand and products to meet their expectations. Tools like surveys and focus groups can provide valuable insights. C – Competition: Analyze your competition to understand what they're doing well and where they fall short. This information can help you identify opportunities to differentiate your brand. Lisa Gansky, an entrepreneur, and author, aptly noted, "A brand is a voice, and a product is a souvenir." O – Origin: Your brand's origin story can be a powerful tool. Share why and how your business was founded. Authenticity resonates with consumers, creating a deeper connection. Bernard Kelvin Clive, a personal branding expert, emphasizes, "A strong brand is the most valuable asset your company can own." N – Need: Identify the specific need your product or service fulfills. This will guide your messaging and help you communicate your value proposition effectively. Peter Drucker, a management consultant, famously said, "The best way to predict the future is to create it." Creating a recognizable brand and developing a product or service that meets market demands is essential for the success of your business. By understanding the difference between your brand, logo, and identity, and leveraging BACON, you can build a brand that resonates with your target audience. Seeking professional help can further enhance your branding efforts, ensuring your business stands out in a competitive market. Remember, your brand is more than just a logo—it's the emotional connection you create with your audience. Invest time and resources into building a strong brand, and you'll reap the rewards in customer loyalty and business growth. www.MasterHappiness.com www.WhatsYourBacon.com

Saturday, July 13: The Big Magical Cult Show at Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, MN (buy tickets here!) July 29: The Age of Magical Overthinking book talk at Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, WA (free!) Time to Milky Jelly™ cleanse your souls, culties. If you were alive in 2017, and anywhere near our same millennial pink corner of the internet, then you KNEW what a Glossier girl was. The emblem of relatable-but-aspirational coolness helmed by cult leader… ahem, CEO… Emily Weiss (of The Hills fame) was so much more than a cosmetics line. Glossier was a lifestyle, a uniform, an identity template, a cultural phenomenon, a religion? Come on, those pink bubble wrap pouches??? If you had one, it meant you'd reached a certain kind of ~enlightenment~. Alongside the likes of other rare brands like Starbucks and SoulCycle, Glossier was a ”cult-followed” company through in through… but was something more sinister lurking underneath? Why did the brand take off as astronomically as it did? And what is the status of the “cult” now? At long last, host Amanda is (over)analyzing the spiritual movement that is Glossier with none other than beauty journalist Marisa Meltzer, author of the New York Times bestselling book Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier (out now in paperback!). Many of us are familiar with the kind of person who easily earns the moniker ‘toxic' and instills fear, rage, and frustration in those around them. What do you do when you work with a toxic leader? How do you feel when toxic leaders continue to get promoted and receive accolades? And what do you do when others make excuses for these toxic leaders, like saying their skill set or network is too important to the organization and you have to “take the good with the bad?”Toxic leaders and cultures take a toll on you, especially when you have your own relational wounding history. You may try to speak up or feel shut down, but there's another common theme: How betrayed you feel when your experiences are met with silence, inaction, or retribution. We're at a critical moment regarding leading, accountability, and culture. But one thing that still feels constant is the impact of our history with relational wounding and relational trauma, and how that impacts how, or if, we speak up in the face of injustices from toxic leaders and toxic work culture.Today's guest wrote a book on the impact of toxic leaders and cultures, including how we often protect toxic leaders at great expense to the staff and the business. As someone who was bullied both as a child and in the workplace, she has some very special insight into this all-too-common experience.Mita Mallick is a corporate change-maker with a track record of transforming businesses. Kyle Leahy, Glossier's first CEO after its founder Emily Weiss vacated the role in May 2022, has had a busy first year-and-a-half in the job. She brought the brand into wholesale for the first time. brokering its partnership with Sephora, which has been a great success. She's also continued the brand's WNBA partnership, launched its first college tour and increased the cadence of its launches. But perhaps most importantly, she can be credited with the revival of the brand, which, as she said in her 2023 Glossy 50 profile, is a long-haul job: “We genuinely believe we're on year 10 of building a 100-year brand.” On this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Leahy spoke about all of the above, in addition to what the brand did when Reddit leaked its eye cream launch and what Glossier has in common with Taylor Swift. She also addressed social media rumors regarding whether or not the brand had reformulated its bestselling fragrance, Glossier You. The makeup brand Glossier developed a cult-like following thanks to genius marketing tactics and a strong vision from founder and CEO Emily Weiss. But eight years later, Weiss stepped down. Why? Journalist Marisa Meltzer joins us to discuss her new book, Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier.
What ever happened to the “girlboss”? There was Audrey Gelman founder of the women-only social club and networking space the Wing, Tyler Haney of sustainable workout brand Outdoor Voices, and perhaps the most popular of them all, Emily Weiss of the cult favorite beauty brand Glossier. Marisa Meltzer, author of Glossy: Ambition, Beauty and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier joins us to break down why most (if not all) of these girlboss empires have crumbled — and why we often give men a break when women are held to higher standards. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who is looking for advice on how to help her daughter improve her credit score, and we sit down with Christine Roberts, President of Citizens Pay, to discuss the best ways to pay for purchases over time. For our money tip of the week, our best advice for saving just a little bit of money if you feel like you can't get out of the cycle of living paycheck-to-paycheck. Join the HerMoney community! Whoa ho ho. This is a big one.
Today is an honest book review and deep dive into the trending book, Glossy by Marisa Meltzer. It is a profile piece about Emily Weiss and Glossier. But who is she? Emily Weiss is the founder of the popular beauty brand, Glossier. She was introduced to the world as a Teen Vogue intern on the MTV show, ‘The Hills', starring Lauren Conrad. She would go on to create the popular beauty blog ‘Into The Gloss' which would be the catalyst for her billion-dollar company, Glossier. What can we learn from “trendy” beauty brands like Glossier and female founds like Emily Weiss? Let's dive in. My next book review will be the Britney Spears memoir, ‘The Women in Me'. This week, TrueAnon's Liz Franczak joins us to help unravel how the girlboss became the lazy girl job while society fell apart. What was the girlboss, and how did it evolve from a term of empowerment to something (let's face it) extremely cringe? Emilie just got done reading Marissa Meltzer's book on the story direct-to-consumer beauty juggernaut Glossier and its enigmatic founder Emily Weiss, and we couldn't think of a better person to discuss it with than this week's guest, TrueAnon co-host Liz Franczak. That's because in addition to being one of our favorite thinkers on all things related to true conspiracies and the sinister things that rich people do, she also happens to have worked as an early employee of the vintage-to-fast fashion retailer Nasty Gal — you know, the company founded by Sophia Amoruso, the lady who wrote the original book on GirlBossing. We discuss the specific economic, political, and technological moment that gave rise to the girl boss; its roots in pop feminist tomes like Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In and Amoruso's #GirlBoss; and why a movement premised on a kind of feminist version of trickle-down capitalism — and that became synonymous with a very specific group of well-heeled, mediagenic, millennial white women — was doomed to disappoint from the start.Along the way, we explore how Glossier and its line of “no makeup makeup” embodied the strange confluence of the Obama-era optimism and digital self-commodification that would become synonymous with mainstream millennial culture, and survey some of the other visions of femininity that have been circulating in wake of the Girl Boss's demise, from Greta Gerwig's Barbie, to lazy girl jobs and girl math, to trad wives, and more. Listen in to our live-recorded podcast with Marisa Meltzer, the author of Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier. We treated this interview as a book club of sorts, and asked Marisa all of your (and our!) pressing questions. She discusses her interviews with Emily Weiss, the rise (and plateau?) of Glossier, her reporting process for the book, why the #GirlBoss era feels so cringey now, and—most importantly—who should play Emily Weiss when Marisa's book gets optioned (hopefully!) for a movie. We hope you enjoy this fun and freewheeling conversation, including a special appearance from Marisa's bulldog, Joan. Before she stepped down as CEO, before she was a mom, and before she led Glossier through three more rounds of funding and a $1.2 billion valuation, Emily Weiss came to the Fat Mascara studio to talk about a gray logo sweatshirt and her plans for world domination. In this refreshing interview (originally recorded in 2017), she opens up in a way we haven't seen in a long time, talking about her favorite mascara (perhaps the one that inspired Glossier Lash Slick, which launched in 2018?); the Arm & Hammer deodorant she buys in bulk; and what it was like to turn a scrappy blog into a beauty behemoth. We're publishing this now, as a “Best of FM” interview, so you can listen before our upcoming interview with Marisa Meltzer, author of the forthcoming Glossier exposé, Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier.Products mentioned in this episode: shopmy.us/collections/173924Episode recap with links: fatmascara.com/best-of-fat-mascaraSponsor links & discount codes: fatmascara.com/sponsorsPrivate Facebook Group: Fat Mascara Raising a WandSocial media: @fatmascara, @jessicamatlin, @jenn_editSubmit a "Raise A Wand" product recommendation and be featured on the show: email info@fatmascara.com or leave a voicemail at 646-481-8182 Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/fatmascara.
