Twin sisters Chloe and Claire Lee started the Selleb Style newsletter as a place to discover what beauty and fashion-obsessed people are actually buying (as verified by their receipts—i.e. no sponcon, please!). Now an app, this discovery platform allows more people to share their receipts and quickly connect with others who share a similar taste “timeline.” In this Business Desk, we talk about the five brands Gen Z is actually loyal to, why Merit has such broad appeal, the Substacks people are happy to pay for, the pricey facialist who keeps popping up, and more. It doesn't get bigger than Linda Wells, the founding editor of Allure magazine, branding consultant, founder of Flesh, and now a columnist for Air Mail, and the editor of Look (Air Mail's beauty vertical). Linda was the woman who decided beauty was worthy of its own conversation, with sharp reporting, a critical eye, and of course, a sense of humor. She brings all of that to this episode of Fat Mascara, where we talk about the eyewatering cost of facelifts, how tech bros hijacked the word “longevity”, and what the uber-rich are actually buying these days. She also reveals her least favorite word in beauty editor-dom, as well as her favorite new beauty products. Makeup artist Lisa Eldridge really, really loves makeup. Join us for a chat in Lisa's NYC pop-up to discuss her beauty inspirations, makeup obsessions, and of course, pet peeves. This episode is a conversation around the new Rihanna cover for the spring issue of Interview magazine. It's a cover that's upset a lot of her fans for two reasons; one, apparently she's just not looking pretty enough and two, she's wearing what looks like a piece of headwear we would normally associate with a nun. It's a real deep dive of an episode, starting with Rihanna's history as a risk-taker when it comes to fashion, before going on to briefly discuss Interview magazine's own history as a magazine that doesn't do safe/squeaky clean content, then I'll break down the cover, including the team, the image that inspired the cover look, the ensuing backlash and I'll also look at the woman who first really rattled religious groups back in the 1980s: Madonna. As always, my DMs are open if you want to talk about anything beauty related or if you want to tell me I went too far in my comments on religion – you can find me over on Instagram @beautymepodcast or you can find me on Threads @charisse_kenion or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com. As promised there is also a blog post featuring all of the imagery and art that I discuss - you can find that here: https://www.charissekenion.co/ and of course I've also made a video, which you can find on my Instagram or TikTok. “Every culture in history has used natural scented materials for the most important things in life—eating, praying, making love, being buried,” says psychotherapist turned natural perfumer Mandy Aftel, in this fascinating interview. The founder of the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents, in Berkley, California, is here to celebrate the release of her latest book, The Museum of Scent, by sharing a few of her stories. She tells us about the time she taught Apple's Jony Ive natural perfumery; how she scented Leonard Cohen's funeral; why oud is misunderstood; the controversial story of ambergris; the backstory of a rare gardenia extract from Tahiti; and so much more. We're calling it now: This is a Fat Mascara classic. Enjoy! Before she stepped down as CEO, before she was a mom, and before she led Glossier through three more rounds of funding and a $1.2 billion valuation, Emily Weiss came to the Fat Mascara studio to talk about a gray logo sweatshirt and her plans for world domination. In this refreshing interview (originally recorded in 2017), she opens up in a way we haven't seen in a long time, talking about her favorite mascara (perhaps the one that inspired Glossier Lash Slick, which launched in 2018?); the Arm & Hammer deodorant she buys in bulk; and what it was like to turn a scrappy blog into a beauty behemoth. We're publishing this now, as a “Best of FM” interview, so you can listen before our upcoming interview with Marisa Meltzer, author of the forthcoming Glossier exposé, Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier.Products mentioned in this episode: shopmy.us/collections/173924Episode recap with links: fatmascara.com/best-of-fat-mascaraSponsor links & discount codes: fatmascara.com/sponsorsPrivate Facebook Group: Fat Mascara Raising a WandSocial media: @fatmascara, @jessicamatlin, @jenn_editSubmit a "Raise A Wand" product recommendation and be featured on the show: email info@fatmascara.com or leave a voicemail at 646-481-8182 Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/fatmascara.
