About the Guest(s): Brandon RheaBrandon Rhea serves as the pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri. He holds a PhD from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, with a focus on Charles Spurgeon. His deep interest in Spurgeon stems from his accessible, doctrinally sound sermons, which have profoundly impacted Rhea's ministry. Under his leadership, Faith Baptist Church has experienced significant revitalization, transforming from a dying congregation to a thriving Reformed Baptist community. Episode Summary: In this riveting episode of Renewalcast, hosts Coalt Robinson and Jay Wipf dive deep into the theological and historical contributions of Charles Spurgeon, often hailed as the "Prince of Preachers." They are joined by special guest Brandon Rhea, pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri, who provides insightful commentary on Spurgeon's impact on modern Christianity and explains why Spurgeon continues to be a significant figure in Reformed theology. Throughout the episode, Brandon Rhea narrates Spurgeon's life journey, from his rise to prominence in London at the age of 19 to his unwavering commitment to doctrinal purity amid rising modernism and Darwinism. The conversation covers Spurgeon's profound influence on Christian piety, his use of the London Baptist Confession, and his enduring legacy in church practices and theology. Rhea also delves into some of Spurgeon's personal exceptions to the confession and how these nuances played out in his ministry. Key Takeaways:Spurgeon's Influence on Christian Piety: His emphasis on doctrinal soundness combined with a profound commitment to Christian piety continues to inspire modern believers.Commitment to Doctrine: Spurgeon's unwavering stand on Calvinism, the inerrancy of Scripture, and his interpretation of the Sabbath highlight his deep commitment to traditional doctrinal truths.Practical Use of Confessions: The London Baptist Confession of Faith served as a doctrinal anchor for Spurgeon's ministry, shaping his church and instructional materials.Balanced Ministry Approach: Despite his strict adherence to doctrine, Spurgeon maintained an ecumenical spirit, inviting preachers from different denominations to his pulpit.Sabbatarian Views: Spurgeon strongly believed in the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship, viewing it as a foretaste of the eternal rest believers will experience.Notable Quotes:"The reason why I like Spurgeon is because, one, he's pithy, and two, he's easy to read, but he's also doctrinally sound." – Brandon Rhea"If you want to understand what the gospel is calling free will, what does that mean? Justification, adoption into the family of God. This is a great place to go." – Brandon Rhea"Every Sunday is an appetizer to that glorious, eternal meal that we will have." – Brandon Rhea"The two great gifts that God has given to man and her are marriage and the Sabbath." – Brandon Rhea"We need to have a confession as a rule, not the final rule, but it brings clarity. We're on the same page here. This is what it means." – Brandon RheaResources:Faith Baptist Church: WebsiteMorning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon: AmazonJeff Chang's "Spurgeon the Pastor": AmazonArnold Dallimore's Biography on Spurgeon: AmazonEd Romines' Book on Spurgeon's Open Air Preaching: AmazonSpurgeon's Sermons and Writings: spurgeon.orgFor more inspiring insights on Charles Spurgeon and his theological contributions, listen to the full episode of Renewalcast. Are Christians still required to keep the Sabbath? And what does keeping the Sabbath really look like?On this episode we will answer these important questions and many others as we consider the role of the sabbath in the Christian life through the lens of the convictions and teachings of Charles Spurgeon. We'll hear from Pastor Brandon Rhea who has a new book out titled “Spurgeon's Forgotten Sabbatarianism: Examining the Role of the 4th Commandment in His Life and Theology.”Rhea is the pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri and received his Ph.D. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, with his dissertation being focused on the Sabbath views of the Prince of Preachers. In this conversation we will:• Dispel some caricatures about the Sabbath• Discuss whether or not this command is still binding for us today• How to begin observing the Sabbath if you have never really set it apart as the Lord's Day.Along the way, we'll learn how a commitment to the Sabbath shaped Spurgeon's ministry, what this looked like in his own life over the years, and how this conviction runs like a thread throughout his preaching and teaching. What can we learn from Spurgeon's Sabbatarianism, and how should we think more carefully about the Lord's Day in our own lives? On this episode you'll be both challenged and encouraged as we explore these questions and more._______________________________

Today on the DO or Do Not podcast, we have Dr. Margaret Wilson, Dean of ATSU Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. ATSU is the oldest/founding osteopathic school and is located in Kirksville, Missouri. We first interviewed Dr. Wilson 2 years ago on episode 21 and are excited to have her back on the podcast. Today's episode is focused on the pre-medical perspective. We will discuss with Dr. Wilson topics such as what makes a great osteopathic school candidate. She will talk about non-traditional applicants and answer questions such as “is it ever too late to apply to medical school.” She will talk about what makes her school special and why students should consider ATSUCOM. Finally, she discusses why many pre-medical students do not know about opportunities in osteopathic medicine and what DOs can do to improve understanding of the profession. Especially for new medical school applicants, understanding the field of osteopathic medicine and the DO degree can be difficult due to ongoing challenges in public awareness. In this podcast, we take a clinical direction with our questions for Dr. Wilson to shed light on these topics. Dr. Wilson discusses some of the current challenges in bringing public awareness to the DO profession along with her personal experiences that have shaped her as an educator and an osteopathic physician. In this podcast, she will provide illumination to the audience on the DO profession for the general public and interested premeds who want to join the DO community. We hope you enjoy this episode.

This week we welcome, country music recording legend, Junior Brown! With his unique voice, more unique song writing, and even more unique double necked “Guit-Steel” guitar, there has absolutely never been ANYONE like Junior Brown. He's an American Original. Born in 1952 in Cottonwood, Arizona, Junior Brown showed an affinity for music at an early age when the family moved to a rural area of Indiana near Kirksville. In the following years, Junior began to experience Country music and remembers it as “growing up out of the ground like the crops – it was everywhere; coming out of cars, houses, gas stations and stores like the soundtrack of a story, but Country music programs on TV hadn't really come along much yet; not until the late fifties.” Discovering a guitar in his grandparent's attic, he spent the next several years woodshedding with records and the radio. Junior was also able to tap into music he couldn't hear at home which older, college aged kids were listening to. This was possible due to his father's employment at small campuses throughout the next decade as the family moved twice again. As a young boy he was able to experience the thrill of performing before live audiences, at parties, school functions even singing and playing guitar for five thousand Boy Scouts at an Andrews Air Force Base jamboree; then while still a teenager, getting the chance to sit in with Rock and Roll pioneer, Bo Diddley. Armed with this broad spectrum of influences, he began to develop a storehouse of musical chops. In the early nineties Brown and his band (including wife Tanya Rae) relocated to Texas to the active Austin music scene and landed a weekly gig at the Continental club. Having worked as a sideman for many of the Austin-based acts over the years, Junior was already well familiar with the town. His unique and entertaining combination of singing, songwriting, instrumental and production skills led to a seven record deal with Curb Records that began with “Twelve Shades of Brown” in 1993. He later released two albums on the TelArc label. There were several Grammy nods, a CMA (Country Music Association) award for “My Wife Thinks You're Dead”, movie and repeated TV appearances like Letterman, Conan, Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, SpongeBob, X Files, Dukes of Hazzard, Me Myself and Irene, Tresspass, Still Breathing, Blue Collar Comedy Tour 1 and 2, and more recently, Better Call Saul. And there were the Ad Campaigns; The Gap, Lee Jeans and Lipton Tea. As Junior became more well known, he began to collaborate on projects with some of his heroes. These include a duet with Ralph Stanley for which Junior received a Bluegrass Music Association Award (IBMA), a duet and video with Hank Thompson, as well as duets with video and record collaborations with the Beach Boys, George Jones, Leon McAuliffe, Ray Price, Leona Williams, Lynn Morris, Lloyd Green and Doc Watson. He even played guitar for Bob Wills' Texas Playboys in a radio commercial. Junior is currently finishing up recording on his latest album, “Deep In The Heart Of Me”. Release date is slated for Spring 2017. Junior's performance on the promotional song, “Better Call Saul” was recorded and released both as a video on AMC as well as a flexible 33 1/3rd vinyl record included in the show's box set from Season One. Junior, Tanya Rae and the band continue to tear up the highways and no doubt will be appearing in concert near you one of these days. Seeing Junior live is a definite must, so GUIT WITH IT 'cause he's AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL! For more information and tour dates, visit JuniorBrown.com.

The first week of February 2008 was a tough one for the western US as a powerful storm moved onshore. The storm's height culminated on February 7. There were several areas of very heavy rain with some places having nearly 10“ while winds gusted to more than 100 mph. Loma Prieta, CA had nearly 10“ of rain and Marysville, Ca had just over 9“. Winds gusted to 163 mph near Tahoe City, CA with a 149 mph wind gust at Mammoth Mountain. Snow was also impressive with a whopping 132“ in Kirksville, CA and 62“ in Wolf Creek Pass Colorado. At height of the storm it was estimated that nearly 2 million people were without power through California, Nevada and Utah. Roads were blocked by snow, flooding was a problem not only from the rainfall but because of pounding waves and storm surge along the northern California coast. The heavy snow, rain and powerful winds caused huge airline delays that rippled across the entire US. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
