Join us as we explore one of history's most unsettling time slip mysteries: the Moberly-Jourdain Incident.

In this episode, Jenn has a conversation with one of the educators who was featured prominently in Harry and Rosemary Wong's latest book, THE New Teacher Induction Book: How to Recruit, Train, and Retain New Teachers. Tara Link is a leader who started an induction program 18 years ago in Moberly, Missouri. She joined Jenn to talk about Rosemary and Harry Wong's latest book, and she had so many useful tips to share. Unfortunately, while we are losing a number of our new and newer teachers, we are also not doing as good of a job of supporting our new teachers as well. About 50% of all new teachers receive no induction at all. Tara shared some of the problems our new teachers face. Sometimes they don't receive anything more than a welcome and then the rest of their new teacher support is left up to chance. They also struggle with a whole new generation of classroom management issues that may have looked different in the past. Plus, newer teachers are increasingly coming through alternative certification routes so they may not have had enough training. Tara really emphasized the importance of DIFFERENTIATING the support we provide to new teachers and being extremely CLEAR. We discussed THREE KEY COMPONENTS of an effective new teacher support system that the Wongs outlined in their book: 1. COLLABORATION New teachers need to connect with a wide range of the people they plan to work with and need to feel they are part of something bigger than themselves. This connects to purpose and our Gen-Z teachers are particularly feeling the need to connect to their purpose. 2. PD TAILORED TO THE NEEDS OF NEW TEACHERS We need to provide new teachers with PD on the basics -- classroom management, lesson design -- and not just jump into training them on the latest fad. As leaders we also need to continually model for new teachers. Be the model of what you want them to be. 3. A COMPREHENSIVE, MULTI-YEAR APPROACH We need to do much more with our new teachers than have them come a day or two before the rest of the staff. Tara developed a model program S.H.I.N.E. (Supporting, Helping, and Inspiring New Educators) that lasts two full years. She shares some successful elements of her program but encourages you to ask your experienced teachers what was helpful in supporting them and look around at your own resources to see how you can use them to support new teachers. Where to start? Tara recommends just choosing ONE system of support. Choose something you are already doing well and plus-one it, that is, add to what you're already doing well. RESOURCES • THE New Teacher Induction Book: How to Recruit, Train, and Retain New Teachers by Harry and Rosemary Wong (and Jenn's summary for The Main Idea is out in April) • Tara Link's latest book, Teacher Induction that Works: A Lasting Impact from Day One. Motorists on Paris road can see the new multi-million dollar community center being built near Sylvan and Towne in northeast Columbia's Whitegate neighborhood, which has high poverty. United Community Builders is building the 22,500 square foot facility, which will be called the Beacon of Light. Senior Bishop and executive director Damian Dean and new development director Rochara Knight of United Community Builders joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday on 939 the Eagle's “CEO Roundtable” program. United Community Builders is an offshoot of United Community Cathedral church. Bishop Dean tells listeners that church's mission is to build and release capable people. He grew up in north St. Louis and came to Columbia to attend Mizzou. Ms. Knight is from Moberly, which is about 35 miles north of Columbia. Bishop Dean expects the Beacon of Light to open in early fall, weather permitting. He says the center's purpose will be to inspire and to educate people to achieve in life, adding that northeast Columbia has been a resource desert. The Whitegate neighborhood has many children, and there's no playground for two miles. He also credits donors for helping raise money for the center. “We will have a regulation-size high school gymnasium … basketball court. We're really thankful for (former Mizzou basketball star) Laurence Bowers and (former Shelter Insurance chief executive officer) Matt Moore and (former Columbia Insurance Group chief executive officer) Gary Thompson for really pushing us during the capital campaign to get a regulation-sized gym,” Bishop Dean tells listeners. He says the center will also have a community room for the public to use, adding that the center will be open Monday-Saturday. Bishop Dean also emphasizes the importance of respect for authority as well as the importance of integrity, honesty and a work ethic. He says United Community Builders gets its funding from individual donors, business owners and grants:

How are hearing loss and musicality connected? In a recent conversation, Brian Taylor spoke with Dr. Srishti Nayak, a researcher at the Vanderbilt Music Cognition Lab, to explore the relationship between hearing and musical abilities. Dr. Nayak discussed emerging research on how musical engagement may support hearing health and introduced the MAPLE framework, which suggests that musical skills, language abilities, and hearing are intertwined through genetic and behavioral factors. The discussion examined how hearing loss can affect musical experiences and whether musicality might help preserve auditory function over time. She highlighted emerging research indicating that musical engagement may play a role in supporting hearing health and mitigating the effects of hearing loss. The discussion also examined how hearing loss can impact a person's ability to engage with music, affecting both perception and enjoyment. Dr. Nayak emphasized the importance of understanding these relationships, as musical training could offer potential benefits for auditory function. Her insights contribute to a growing body of research that seeks to bridge the gap between music cognition and hearing science. Reference: Nayak, S., Moberly, A. C., & Tamati, T. N. (2024). They are all science fiction tropes that have reached the point of being cliché. But then what do you tell someone who says they have truly done those things? We're going to look at some fascinating stories of people who claim to have somehow traveled through time or to another dimension. Some stories are decades old, others more than a century old, and some have happened so recently, they could've happened to your next door neighbor without you even knowing it.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Disclaimer and Show Intro (partial)00:01:24.625 = “I'm Scared” by Jack Finney00:36:56.814 = Show Intro (full)00:42:24.641 = Stories of Time Travelers, Part 101:04:04.341 = Stories of Time Travelers, Part 201:19:49.668 = Time Travel Urban Legends01:29:18.655 = Show CloseSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…BOOK: “The Ghosts of Trianon” by Moberly and Jourdain: https://amzn.to/3gvLn2xBOOK: “Flight Towards Reality” by Sir Victor Goddard: https://tinyurl.com/y3fwrpawBOOK: “Father Ernetti's Chronovisor: The Creation and Disappearance of the World's First Time Machine” by Peter Krassa: https://amzn.to/3j9fqPtStephen Wagner for LiveAbout.com: https://tinyurl.com/y6ep8jv9Lucia Peters from Bustle.com: https://tinyurl.com/y5dw83f4Olivia Muenter from Bustle.com: https://tinyurl.com/yxmjo267Christopher McFadden for InterestingEngineering.com: https://tinyurl.com/y54s3lmtThe story, “I'm Scared” which I read at the beginning of the episode, was written by Jack Finney: https://tinyurl.com/y3kf7ksjWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library.= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. Seguimi su Instagram: @laguerragrande_podcastSe vuoi contribuire con una donazione sul conto PayPal: podcastlaguerragrande@gmail.comScritto e condotto da Andrea BassoMontaggio e audio: Andrea BassoFonti dell'episodio:African Kaiser: General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and the Great War in Africa, 1914-1918, Berkeley Books, 2017 Fernando Amado Couto, Maziúa 1914: a entrada de Moçambique na I Guerra Mundial, Plataforma Macau, 2014 Ross Anderson, The Forgotten Front: The East Africa Campaign, 1914–1918, Tempus, 2004 Arthur John Byng Wavell 1882 – 1916, Kenya Battlefields H. Columbia-based Socket Internet is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Socket was founded in 1994 and moved its headquarters to its "new" location on Columbia's Clark Lane in 2007. Socket's network operations center operates an extensive network throughout Missouri, featuring redundant connections to the internet from both Kansas City and St. Louis. Socket serves hundreds of cities, including Columbia, Jefferson City, Ashland and many small towns like Moberly, Boonville, Sturgeon, Centralia and Sedalia. Socket president and co-owner Carson Coffman joined host Fred Parry in-studio Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable." Mr. Coffman grew up in north Missouri's Callao, a farming community in Macon County. He graduated with Mizzou with a degree in civil engineering and was working 80-hour workweeks before he joined Socket part-time. He eventually went full-time and is now Socket's president and co-owner. Mr. Coffman tells listeners that the biggest challenge Socket faces is access to capital. Socket's home service offers television, phone and internet. Mr. Coffman says only about 50 percent of residents in Boone County have a sufficient level of high-speed internet. He also says 60 to 70 percent of customers get Socket's one-gig service. Mr. Coffman emphasizes the importance of serving everyone, including rural farming communities:
Seven Republicans, two Democrats and Vienna Libertarian nominee Jordan Rowden hope to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth) in November. One of the seven Republicans, State Rep. Justin Hicks (R-Lake St. Louis), has suspended his campaign. Former Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee chair Kurt Schaefer (R-Columbia) is one of the seven Republicans running, and he joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." Senator Schaefer tells listeners that he likes the unity he's seeing on television at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and hopes it sticks. He's focusing on the southern border and the economy as he campaigns. Schaefer's top primary rival is former State Sen. Bob Onder (R-Lake St. Louis), who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Onder's theme has been he'll make DC listen, but Schaefer says no one listened to Onder when he served in the Missouri Senate in Jefferson City. Senator Schaefer also emphasizes the importance of oversight on Capitol Hill, noting the critical role he played in the Moberly Mamtek investigation at the Statehouse. Former Mamtek chief executive officer Bruce Cole was paroled from prison in 2018. Cole pleaded guilty in September 2014 to one count of theft and two counts of securities fraud, and he was sentenced to seven years in state prison. Prosecutors say Cole scammed investors out of millions of dollars involving a failed artificial sweetener plant in Moberly. Former Senator Schaefer blasted Cole this morning on "Wake Up", and he also criticized then-Governor Jay Nixon (D) for what he calls a lack of due diligence involving Mamtek. The seven GOP primary candidates on the August ballot are Schaefer, former Sen. Onder, Rep. Hicks (his name is still on the ballot), Arnie Dienoff of O'Fallon, Chad Bicknell of Arnold, Kyle Bone of DeSoto and Bruce Bowman of Jefferson City. The two Democrats running are Wentzville's Bethany Mann and Andrew Daly of Fulton. The sprawling district includes Columbia south of Broadway, Ashland, Jefferson City, Boonville, Fulton, California, Wentzville and O'Fallon:

This week's news that Moberly's KWIX-KRES Radio had let their entire on-air staff go has generated news stories this week from all three mid-Missouri television stations. Zimmer Communications president John Zimmer joined is live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" to discuss the importance of local radio. Mr. Zimmer tells listeners that his heart goes out to everyone impacted by this development in Moberly and other towns like Farmington and Festus as well. Mr. Zimmer says this will hurt the community. He notes that Zimmer has modeled a lot of its emphasis on news, sports and severe weather based on what the late Jerrell Shepherd did in Moberly and elsewhere. Mr. Zimmer also talked about his late father, Jerome Zimmer and the stations he started in southeast Missouri's Dexter. Mr. Zimmer says his father taught him the importance of serving the local community and local advertisers, and that he thinks of his father daily. Mr. Zimmer also discussed a bipartisan bill in Congress aimed at protecting AM radio in cars. He supports that bill and says it's about safety for all Americans:

In part 2 of our series on the Ghosts of Versailles, we're looking into what transpired in the years following the initial incident. Charlotte Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain conducted intense research to figure out who or what they may have been interacting with on August 10th, 1901. That research led them, among many other things, to discover there was an insurrection on that exact day in 1792, 71 years earlier to the day. The Tuileries Place is not in Versailles but in Paris, 11 miles away. Revolutionaries with weapons wanted the Monarchy abolished. They waged an intense attack on the palace that Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were now living in on lockdown. On that day, 650 of the Swiss Guard were massacred by Jacobins and a group known as the Paris Commune. Once the Swiss Guard ran out of ammunition, they were slaughtered, and their bodies dismembered and paraded about the palace grounds. King Louis and Marie Antoinette had moved to a safer location in the Legislative Assembly Building. Moberly and Jourdain wondered if they might have somehow intersected with what no doubt would have been Marie Antoinette's fearful and saddened state of mind that day. Is it possible she was reminiscing about happier times at her favorite place in the world, Le Petit Trianon? Could Moberly and Jourdain have somehow crossed paths with Antoinette's ghostly memories of happiness on the anniversary of the day that would mark the beginning of the end, not only for the King and herself but the Monarchy, too? We'll discuss that and our theories about what may have happened and how the Ghosts of Versailles evolved into the story it is today. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.
Growing up with alcohol can make a significant impact on a life... and hateful words from those who are close can cut like a knife. Today's Storyteller has experienced both. But, he has not been defeated. He is an overcomer.
In the late summer of 1901, two women journeyed to the renowned Palace of Versailles, a few miles west of Paris. This breathtaking royal home, once the epitome of the French Monarchy during the reigns of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI, was an unfamiliar territory to them. Yet, the palace grounds seemed eager to impart a history lesson they had not anticipated. While exploring the vast estate, Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain found themselves amidst various characters adorned in peculiar attire. They noticed buildings, structures, and anachronistic farm tools from a past era. It was as if they had inadvertently stepped through a portal into a bygone era. The highlight of their uncanny experience may have been an encounter with a spectral figure of what may have been Queen Marie Antoinette herself. The bewildering events of that summer day left Moberly and Jourdain perplexed. Over time, they gradually pieced together the puzzle of their extraordinary visit. Years were devoted to delving into Versailles' rich history, with additional visits undertaken to comprehend the mysterious occurrences they had witnessed. Despite being mocked by many, they remained steadfast in their quest to understand what they had seen in 1901. Today, their astonishing experience, known as the Moberly-Jourdain Incident or The Ghosts of Versailles, continues to fascinate fans of timeslips, time travel and encounters with ghosts of events that happened long ago. Tonight, Scott is joined by special guest co-hosts Richard Hatem and Marie Mayhew to dive into this bizarre tale. Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode.
The Early Tudors - Henry VII and Henry VIII by Charles Edward Moberly audiobook. Following the chaos of the Wars of the Roses, the reigns of Henry VII and VIII were autocratic and centralized to an unprecedented degree. This slim volume by the British historian and educator, Charles Moberly, provides many interesting details about the reigns of these two monarchs. But the author also offers a clear picture of the European context in which they acted: the Reformation struggle, the rivalry between the King Francis I and Emperor Charles V, the influence of the Popes, and the struggle for Italy. Michael Moberly is fun. Plain and simple. Every time I have been around him has been more rousing and laugh-filled than the last. When he removed alcohol from his life it felt like we only grew closer. My greatest friends at the moment have been those that have been filling their existence with good, and balance, and hope for themselves in the future. This is a departure from previous episodes, only in that Moberly is the first to roast me (I don't own a Corvette) and the first to feature big time shout outs to some of our favorite brands. I hope this episode is as fun for you to listen to as it was to make. Thank you, Moberly, for everything. Michael Moberly, Beverage Innovation Manager at Monin, is a beverage enthusiast, columnist, and educator based in Reno NV. He is also very good at wearing hats. Founded in 2016, the mission of Ben's Friends is to offer hope, fellowship, and a path forward to anyone who struggles with substance abuse or addiction. By coming together, starting a dialogue, and acknowledging that substance abuse cannot be overcome by isolation and willpower alone, Ben's Friends hopes to write a new chapter in the lives of food and beverage professionals across the country. Most of us understand the damage caused by cyberattacks on Earth. In space, the consequences of cyberattacks are even more dire. They can sabotage years of economic activity, threaten national security and the lives of astronauts and in-space personnel, and spark uncontrollable military action in an already dangerous environment. In this episode, we'll learn about how modern approaches to cyber and national security change when dealing with complex in-space infrastructure, and protecting human activity in space. This episode is part of the On Orbit Future Space Economy webcast series. In Part 1 of this discussion, we discuss the legal framework and policies needed to protect the Future Space Economy. Part 2 of the discussion will focus on the software, tools, and technological solutions needed to protect space networks. This discussion includes John Moberly, senior vice president of Space at SpiderOak. Moberly leads SpiderOak's pivot to space leveraging the company's zero trust and cybersecurity foundational capabilities. Prior to SpiderOak, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, from which he retired after 20 years. Joining Moberly is Jonathan Swanson, director of Security Strategy for Krebs Stamos Group. Swanson is an ISC2 CISSP certified professional with over a decade of expertise in cyber security strategy and risk management.
