When Russia unleashed its illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, gas prices in Europe spiked by a factor of 10, driving a wave of bankruptcies and restructurings of European energy companies. Uniper was one of those. Uniper is one of Germany's largest energy companies. It is active across more than 40 countries and has 19.5 GW of power generation capacity to its name. It was one of the funders of the built-but-never-used Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline that connects Russia to Germany and, for most of its history, was heavily reliant on Russian gas. So when the gas taps from Russia were turned off, Uniper reported losses of $40 billion — the highest losses in German corporate history — and was subsequently nationalised by the German government. The company has since returned to profitability under its new CEO, Michael Lewis, our guest this week on Cleaning Up. Michael Lewis joins Michael Liebreich to discuss the company's rise from the ashes, and how it plans to reach its climate targets and overcome the dunkelflaute.Leadership Circle: Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Meg Wolitzer presents two stories about secret spaces and what they represent. In N. K. Jemisin's speculative fantasy “Elevator Dancer,” a security guard in a totalitarian regime is beguiled by an act of freedom. The reader is Laura Gómez. And Hugh Dancy reads Greg Jackson's “The Hollow,” about a secret room, a purposeless life, and a guy who can't stop talking about Vincent Van Gogh.

Get more at wickedproblems.earthSo much is happening that it's hard to drink from the firehose of US executive orders on energy and crazy chaos orangutang screeches on presidential letterhead, UK debates about growth versus climate, and parsing the statements of tech broligarchs to the only people left who can hold them accountable – their investors during earnings calls this week. And that's before we get to Heathrow and a Scottish court ruling that the Rosebank field was unlawfully given permission because it ignored carbon emissions – which I'm sure peaked the interest of lawyers for the 16 Just Stop Oil protestors facing some of the longest sentences ever handed down for non-violent protests. So we've got a mega-episode for you this Friday the last day of January. We've got climate comedian and UCL academic Matt Winning, along with climate journalist and BlueSky maestro Dave Vetter to help make sense of all of that. And we've got Adam Grant Bell of the UK consultancy Stonehaven, who after decades in and out of government has a pretty good sense for these things, setting some odds on what's going to happen this year in getting enough renewables built to achieve the UK government's goals of hitting clean power by 2030. And he thinks the UK government might this year finally move away from a national price for electricity and to a system where cheaper electricity from things like wind and solar will be reflected locally, something Octopus's Greg Jackson and others have been calling for and could radically change decisions about where power gets generated and where you site things like factories that will use it.And because we can't ignore that chaos orangutang with nuclear weapons, US-based Financial Times journos Amanda Chu and me aul mucker Jamie Smyth of Energy Source join us.00:13 Government's Role in the Chaos 00:18 Trump's Impact on Renewable Energy 00:45 Weekly Recap and Upcoming Topics 01:11 Elon Musk02:31 Climate and Energy Policies04:37 Interview with FT Journalists 05:49 Tracking Executive Orders 09:41 Impact on Renewable Energy Projects 10:29 Texas and Clean Energy Growth 12:48 Energy Policy and Executive Authority 13:49 Challenges in Renewable Energy Development 15:58 Geopolitical Factors and Market Dynamics 20:11 Future of Renewable Energy Auctions 36:55 Enhanced Geothermal and Government Policies 37:31 Small Modular Reactors and Long Duration Storage 38:22 Chancellor's Speech and Planning Reforms 39:30 Environmental and Climate Change Debates 40:37 Rosebank Ruling and Oil and Gas Projects 42:48 Interview with Dave Vedder and Matt Winning 44:34 AI Advancements and Energy Implications 53:46 Heathrow Expansion and Sustainable Aviation Fuel 01:04:43 Closing Thoughts and Upcoming EventsAll the TunesIf you're enjoying the tunes, check out the whole outro playlist:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2AWvHdqqNAUCJcByQEokut?si=2f56f6d68d2c4bff Hosted on Acast. 14 months ago Suella Braverman was Home Secretary. Now, she's positing the idea that Britain could fall into the hands of "Muslim fundamentalism" and warning that the UK could become a theocratic state akin to Iran. What has caused such a shift to the right? And how comfortable are the Tory party with that kind of rhetoric? Later we speak to Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, about Rachel Reeves's growth speech, net zero and whether business has confidence in the Treasury.Tickets to The News Agents Live On Stage with HSBC UK are now on sale! “I suspect in the UK we're going to end up with some really deep, high-quality verticals…as opposed to lots of law firms having components,” says today's guest Greg Jackson, Director of Law Firm Strategy and Transformation at PwC, who joins The Future is Bright to discuss this and many more predictions he has for the future of UK law firms. Along with co-hosts Chris Batz and Howard Rosenberg, Greg will compare UK firms to their American counterparts in terms of economics, leverage, rates and utilization, pay and expectations at the partner level, as well as yearly hours. He will explain why he's changed his view—however slightly—on the idea of growth for growth's sake, how the UK legal market is changing—including a particularly important one—and his advice for mid sized firms. He will also explain how Alternative Business Structure will affect the UK model going forward and why U.S. outbound work to Europe is so important. He'll predict whether or not the UK will adopt a hybrid model, marrying innovation with tradition, as well as what to do when you've been on a steady upward trajectory for a sustained period of time, and the issue that keeps his clients up at night. What is the one thing that U.S. law firms do better than those across the pond? Join today's episode of The Future is Bright to find out. Quotes “One of the projects that I always encourage clients to do—and I did in my old world—was, How do you situate your exec or board in a ten percent off the top line reduction? Whether hours or price or some combination of the two? Situate yourself in that issue and think, ‘What can we do about cash? What do we do with our clients? What work do you want to hold on to that we're willing to go for a downward cycle, even if it's painful?” (7:01 | Greg Jackson) “I don't know how this is played out in the U.S., but in the UK, in particular in the last 12 months, there have been a number of quite bad well-being incidents that have happened which have caused firms to really think about, ‘How do you connect utilization into an understanding of what people are doing?' It can be quite hidden, to your point, big hours, etc.” (14:58 | Greg Jackson) “When you think of what's coming in terms of technology investment, lawyer salaries, the need to be more international and cope with more complex regulatory environments to operate in the U.S./UK, I just see a world in which you need more scale.” (19:47 | Greg Jackson) “I suspect in the UK we're going to end up with some really deep, high-quality verticals…as opposed to lots of law firms having components.” (24:22 | Greg Jackson) Links Connect with Greg Jackson: LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/greg-jackson86/ Connect with Howard Rosenberg: LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hrosenberg/ Company web profile: https://www.baretzbrunelle.com/howard-rosenberg Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/ LinkedIn Company page: https://www.linkedin.com/company/columbus-street/ Columbus Street website: https://www.columbus-street.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

From our July 28, 2024 service. Message by guest speaker, Greg Jackson
In this second special episode of Wood Mackenzie's The Energy Gang, recorded at the Reuters Global Energy Transition 2024 conference in New York, we speak with leaders at some of the key companies shaping the energy transition. We hear about how they are tackling the challenge of meeting rising demand for electricity while at the same time reducing emissions.Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, talks about his ambitions in the US market, which are centered around selling the company's Kraken technology platform to utilities. He highlights the global potential of digitalization in propelling the energy transition forward. The transition towards renewable energy is governed not only by technological progress, but also by regulatory and policy frameworks. Our second guest, David Carroll, Chief Renewables Officer at Engie, talks about how legislation including the Inflation Reduction Act, and regulatory initiatives such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) Order No. 1920, can catalyze the adoption of renewable energy sources.Next we talk to Ana Quelhas, Managing Director of the Hydrogen Business Unit at EDP Renewables, about the role of hydrogen in the shift away from carbon-intensive energy. Some of the hype around low-carbon hydrogen has been dying away over the past year or two. But Ana Quelhas argues that, if done right, hydrogen can still be an important part of a zero-carbon energy system, for uses where direct electrification may not be feasible. And finally, Bill Newsom, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, tells us about what the energy revolution means for equipment suppliers. His company is developing and deploying solutions that address the demand for “clean firm” power that is available round-the-clock, through hydrogen and carbon capture. He talks about the prospect that these technologies could help provide the massive increase in 24/7 low-carbon electricity that will be required for new data centers and factories, and to charge electric vehicles.Look out for the next special episode from day three of the conference, available on Friday June 28.You can find Ed and the show on most social media platforms: we're @theenergygang on X. Whether we're talking about the devastating consequences of abortion bans or the legitimacy of Trump's criminal trial, there are too many people in this country who can't seem to handle the truth. Stories like that of Ryan and Jess Hamilton, who couldn't get medical care in Texas after a miscarriage, might be difficult to read but that doesn't make them false. We can only solve problems by facing them head-on, so here on The Suburban Women Problem we want to loudly proclaim that yes, we CAN handle the truth!Gun violence is another issue where we must first confront difficult realities before we can make real change. So this week we're joined by Sefanie Feldman and Greg Jackson from the new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
