September is just about over and to close out SCI Awareness Month, Brandon Winfield joins me on the podcast to talk about his app, iAccess Life, an app that allows the user to rate the accessibility of different restaurants, venues, and other locations worldwide. He also shares his injury and recovery story and about living life in the fast lane… literally!Ramp. It. Up!Get To Know Our GuestIn 2008, Brandon Winfield (he/him) was injured in a motocross accident that left him with a thoracic spinal cord injury (paralyzed from the waist down). Only 14 years old at the time, he was faced with the decision to either let this dramatic event stop him from truly living the life he wanted or to turn it into an opportunity to triumph in the face of tragedy – Brandon chose the latter. He continued his love for racing in the form of four wheels, entered sprint kart racing, and won numerous events across the country. As he traveled, he realized that although some places he visited were compliant according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), many areas were grandfathered in and never forced to retrofit to accommodate the mobility impaired. These experiences sparked the idea for iAccess, a mobile app that would allow people with disabilities to rate and review the accessibility of venues such as restaurants, lounges, clubs, and bars...Click HERE to continue reading bio.Website: https://www.iaccess.life/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iaccesslife/Linktree: https://linktr.ee/bmw937Click HERE to Vote Brandon Winfield for United Spinal's #StrongWheeled Together AwardsClick the link below to register for the United Spinal Association's TechTalkshttps://unitedspinal.org/events/techtalks/Stay Connected to the PodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ramp.it.up.podcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZoeOnWheelz/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZAnH8I6sGEf7SJ9OKw8dEAEmail: rampituppodcast@gmail.comSpecial Thanks: JWoods CompanyContact JWoods Company for all of your catering and special event needs.Website: https://www.jwoodscompany.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jwoodscompany/Email: contact@jwoodscompany.comBoss Girl Trucking: ROAD MAP TO BUSINESS CREDITA Step by Step Guide on building Business Credit. Brandon used to compete in motocross then life turned upside down at 14 during a race when he faced a spinal cord injury at the T7 vertebrae. Hardship quickly turned into the mindset of how could he make the world a better place. Brandon founded iAccess Innovations and one current offering is the app iAccess Life https://www.iaccess.life/ which rates and reviews places on accessibility. You can find Brandon on social media @iaccesslife and personally @bmw937. Transcript: https://rb.gy/cce9iv
Brandon Winfield and Sayeed Mehrjerdian are welcomed to the show to tell the powerful story behind their new app, iAccess Life, the Yelp for accessibility. After being injured in a Motocross accident at the age of 14, Winfield was left paralyzed from the chest down. Through a great support system of friends and family, Winfield continued to travel, adventure, and experience life. However, he was sometimes surprised by the lack of accessibility at places he would go out with friends, and he came up with the idea for an app that would inform users of accessibility ratings before going out. Knowing if there is handicapped parking, a ramp, an accessible bathroom, and other features before driving to eat at a restaurant, work at a coffee shop, or work out at a gym will prevent surprises and empower individuals with physical disabilities. Thus began the long journey to build the iAccess app to help the community, a journey marked by humility and resilience. Despite not having a college degree, Winfield has lead this Atlanta based tech startup as CEO, successfully raising support, breaking stereotypes, and inspiring others along the way. Mehrjerdian, an Industrial and Systems Engineer graduate from Georgia Tech, joined the venture as CIPO, Chief Innovation and Product Officer, to use his background in product management and starting technology companies to push iAccess forward. Recent success has shown through the launch of the app and in winning at the South by Southwest Pitch Competition. The two Co-founders together make an unstoppable team, and there is no doubt they will reach their vision of revolutionizing accessibility through information in the palm of your hand. Winfield and Mehrjerdian bring great insights into starting a company such as: Build a team with a common vision. This is make or break. Setbacks and failures often lead to success if you do not give up. Startups take a long time. Overnight success is an illusion. The only way to fail is to quit. Keep pushing through. Let your pride go of wanting to do this on your own. Ask for help. Never underestimate the power of your network. Stop making excuses. Pitch. Pitch. Pitch. Apply to as many opportunities to pitch as you can. Perfect practice makes perfect. When someone says no, ask why? You will learn from them. Raising money is hard, but not impossible. “What you are doing in your personal life reflects in the success of your business as well.” Make sure you are growing personally, not just in your career! “Be confident, believe in what you are doing, why are you doing it, and in yourself.” The number one thing to be successful in business is to believe in yourself and be confident in yourself, but don’t fool yourself into thinking it is working when it is not. Quality over quantity. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/startupdormroom/support
Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Brandon Winfield, the Founder and CEO of iaccess.life. I’m so impressed with Brandon who suffered an injury during a motocross accident at the age of 14 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. A powerful example of resilience, Brandon saw this injury as a mere setback. He committed himself to finding the opportunity within the tragedy and noticed that while he traveled, most places he visited were up to Americans with Disabilities Act code, but there were many areas grandfathered in and never forced to retrofit to accommodate the mobility impaired. Brandon recognized the opportunity of creating an app that would allow people with mobility impairments to rate and review the ease of accessibility and post photos of venues like restaurants, clubs, and bars. Creating this community of people with similar experiences would be something that could help others prepare for types of inconveniences others may face if visiting. This information creates the ability for mobility impaired people to navigate a stress free, relaxing night with friends and loved ones. Not only that but it helps others be more aware of the challenges mobility impaired people face and plan events and celebrations in places that are accommodating for all. Brandon, thank you for joining me on Get Up Nation®! The HypeThe SXSW Conference in Austin, TX was this month, and there were a lot of showcases packed into just a few days, including several Atlanta startups. The app helps people with disabilities find the top reviewed establishments that will fit their necessary accommodations. March also saw the TEDxAtlanta which featured several expert speakers discussing a myriad of different, interesting topics. Everything from bio-ethics to child cognition, to the sustainability efforts of The Ray, TEDxAtlanta delivered countless, inspiring talks. Holly also mentions that Atlanta has been very busy this past month as far as raising capital. Roadie, a home-grown startup that does peer-to-peer delivery, raised almost $40 million and continues to grow rapidly. Ionic Security also raised $40 million will investors like JP Morgan Chase. And Movius, a mobile software company, raised $45 million in another huge round of funding. There is also a growing number of new entrepreneurial hubs and startup communities making their way to Atlanta. This includes Switchyards and The Lola.
