Blind Abilities presents a new iPhone101 series entitled: "Managing Mail Messages and Accounts in iOS - Adding, Retrieving and  Deleting, Oh My!” This new series provides various in depth demonstrations aimed at giving you the tools to effectively manage your email in an organized and efficient manner. Pete Lane walks us through each step of these processes with snappy and thorough presentations.  Part 6 Adding a brand new Gmail account to the iPhone, going into the Google.com web site, choosing an email address, and adding it to the phone. Enjoy this peppy and informative presentation in which Blind Abilities offers another educational gem in its iPhone 101 library of demonstrations.   Step-by-Step Process: Note: This process is very similar to the process presented in our previous episode for adding an existing Gmail account, except that you must choose the new email address you wish to use. If you are creating a new Gmail account, we suggest that you choose several potential new email addresses in case your favorites are already taken and therefore rejected by Google. This scenario is covered below in step 5. Ask Siri to open the “Settings” app, or perform a single-finger double-tap on the App icon. Flick down to “Mail” and perform a single-finger double-tap, then flick down and single-finger double-tap to select “Accounts. Flick down and perform a single-finger double-tap on “Add Account”. Select the email account service you wish to add by performing a Single-finger double-tap on that item in the list: iCloud, Exchange, Google / Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook.com / Hotmail, or “Other”. If you choose to add a Gmail account, single-finger double-tap on Google. In this case iOS will immediately prompt you to go to Google.com to sign in and register the email account. Single-finger double-tap on “Continue” to proceed to the web site. Since you are creating a brand new Gmail account, swipe right, past the sign-in elements, skip the “next” button and single-finger double-tap on “create account button". Follow the prompts: type in your first and last name, birth date and gender, and then choose and type in the email address and login information requested. Since this is a new account, the address and password will be one you choose yourself, so think about this ahead of time. Also, you will be given a couple of email addresses to select if you so choose, but if you prefer using one of your own,  keep in mind that  many common addresses may no longer be available. Because someone else has already selected them.  In this case, Google will reject them so be ready to try another one. This may happen several times. You will now be prompted to provide your cellular phone number so Google can contact you when needed. Once you agree and type in your phone number, you will immediately be sent a six-digit security code via text message. Be ready for this as you are given a short, 30 second time frame to retrieve and enter it. Note: Dictation does not behave well in these text fields, so be prepared to type-in the information using your onscreen or bluetooth keyboard. After providing your phone number and entering the security code, you will be presented a “Save” button, single-finger double-tap. You will then move back to the previous screen showing your email accounts, including the newly added account. You can also return to your Mail App to verify that the new account is listed there as well. Congratulations, you have finished creating a new email address! The Mail Preview allows us to preview - read - a portion of an email while it is unopened in your Inbox. The portion of the email that can be previewed can range from none and up to five lines and is set by you in your Settings App. This can save you time in processing your emails and make you more efficient in using your Mail App. In fact, you may even be able to scroll through the majority of your Inbox without even having to open a single email.  In this short, iPhone 101 demonstration Pete Lane shows us not only where the Mail Preview settings reside on your iDevice, but how to adjust those settings for your optimal benefit.  The Process: Ask Siri to open Settings or Single finger double tap on the Settings icon. Single finger swipe right down to Mail and Single finger double tap. Swipe right to “Preview”, Single finger double tap. Select the Preview selection you want to us.  Your Mail app will now reflect this preview in all messages in all accounts. Merely swipe to a message and Voiceover will automatically read the preview lines to you.  As an alternative to waiting for Voiceover to read the preview lines, you can also perform a 3-finger single-tap anywhere on your screen once focused on the message in the mailbox, and Voiceover will read the preview immediately. This can be an effective tool for controlling the process of managing your email quickly and efficiently. iOS For Grandparents

An iPhone and iPad is the perfect combination of tech for your parents and grandparents. Its touch-friendly interface makes it easy to interact with and, for the most part, everything just works together seamlessly. So, here is a little guide to setting up an iPhone or iPad for the older generation and some features you may want to adjust. https://youtu.be/B7MYCXnsink AppleID The first thing you want to do is create them an AppleID. This account can be used to sync all their personal information without it getting mixed in with yours. If they already have an email you can use it to create their AppleID. If they don't already have an email then you can create them an iCloud account. You can sign in or create a new AppleID either during the setup process or later in Settings. To sign in to their AppleID after setting up the iDevice open Settings. If you signed into their account previously or during setup you will see their profile at the top of Settings. If your account is signed you can sign out by clicking on your profile and scrolling to the bottom then tapping sign out. You may have to enter your AppleID password a few times to disable services like Find My iPhone. If there is no account currently signed in you will be given the option to sign in or create an account. This is where you would enter their AppleID credentials. Once you have signed into their account there are a few settings you may want to adjust, such as iCloud Services. Start by clicking the profile at the top of Settings then tap on iCloud. All the services set to sync through iCloud are shown here. Some services you make want to take a closer look at are Messages, iCloud Photo Library, and iCloud Backup. Speaking of iCloud Backup, it's a great idea to keep a backup of their device. If they lose or break their phone you will have another way to get their data back. However, enabling iCloud Backup, Messages in the cloud, and iCloud Photo Library will quickly burn through your 5GB of free cloud space which will result in that annoying popup that your iCloud storage is full. So, if you want to use one or more of these services you will need to purchase more iCloud storage at a monthly fee. If you prefer not to use these services you can always disable them. To disable iCloud Photo Library, open Photos and toggle iCloud Photos off. Now, go back and select iCloud Backup and toggle that off, then you can do the same with Messages. The other services listed here don't count toward your data allowance, so, they don't hurt anything being enabled this lighter data will just sync across all of your devices in the background. Home Screen Now that everything is syncing correctly it's time to clean up the Home screen. The goal is to declutter the home screen including only the essentials apps that will the used by the user like Phone, Camera, Photos, Email, and such. Apps like the Compass, Measure, and Home can probably go. On an iPhone, you can get rid of apps by moving them to the App Library. Hold down that app until the options menu appears. From that menu choose "Remove App" and you can choose to either "Remove from Home Screen" which will move the app to the App library or you can completely remove the app from your device by tapping "Delete App". iPad users can remove apps the same way however since there is no App Library on iPad yet the only option is to delete the app. Another way you can handle this is by dragging all unwanted apps into a single folder and moving it to the side. Shortcuts With your home screen cleaned up, it's time to add some more to it. With the Shortcuts app, you can create quick access to different features. For instance, with one tap you can make a phone call or turn the flashlight on and off without having to dive into menus. There is so much here that you can play around with, but I'm only going to cover how to make a one-click call. So,

Blind Bargains Audio: Featuring the BB Qast, Technology news, Interviews, and more

Some things just fit into place when it comes to podcasting. Kind of like how you can easily snap together a pile of Legos into a nifty completed construction project. This week J.J. learns more about how to do just that with new accessible tools that will make him a Master Builder in no time with Matthew Shifrin , a consultant from Lego. There is also a ton of news, a few long time listeners in "Sound Off" and the "Last Word" is for the dogs. Look through your blocks for that elusive small blue two studded piece, it was just in our hands a minute ago we swear, while consuming BBQ 192. In The News: The Accessibility Bugs Introduced and Resolved in iOS 13 for Blind and Low Vision Users What's New in iOS 13: Part 1, Changes for VoiceOver Users What's New in iOS 13: Part 2, General Features WayAround 3.0 launches soon CSUNATC20 Opens Its Call For General Session Papers Latest Braille Blaster includes Graphics Support, LaTeX Math Features Tech It Out For September Features Smart Kitchen Gadgets Access World for September is now online Blind Abilities interviews the team behind Audio Wizards The Games Accessibility Conference2019 videos are now up on YouTube Interview: Lego Consultant Matthew Shifrin Before the days of 3d printing, if you wanted to know what a famous landmark felt like, you would have to turn to a crate of Legos in order to learn the details about how a particular object might look. That could be a really daunting task if you didn't have guidance or a great set of instructions on how to go about the act of building your architectural wonder. Matthew Shifrin, Consultant with Lego, tells J.J. about his enjoyment of building things out of blocks with his family and how that grew into his desire to share that process with others. Listen as Mathew explains how a family friend provided him with a large box with hand-embossed Braille instructions on how to create a castle. And how that experience aided him in showing the team at Lego how they could improve the ability for future Master Builders out there to construct their own creations. Visit the official Lego site for the accessible instruction to learn more. Also, venture over to Matthew's Legos For The Blind website to learn more about his Lego sets Matthew is involved with other aspirational projects including Project Daredevil which seeks to provide immersive experiences using the body in ways that have not been realized before. Tip: Turn Off Automatic Updates Apple releasing iOS13, and the soon to be released on September 24th dot 1 update, might not be worth the effort as both releases have some hefty bugs. Sure, you can roll back to iOS 12, but remember Apple locks out the ability to do so not too long from the release of a new version of iOS. Sometimes it is just better to let others work out the problems while you wait for a verified stable version to come down from Apple Park. Head to Settings, General and then Software Update. From there look for the option to turn off automatic updates. Now repeat these same steps when you are ready to get your desired upgrade. Also, you may want to do the same in the App Store. Joe told the story about having Instacart broken for 72 hours while the company worked to fix the Voiceover compatibility they broke in one of their recent changes to the app. If your iDevice is your primary way of interacting with the world... you should do this to ensure that you don't lose your access to critical apps and settings. Sound Off: Our first email is from Rebecca Skipper. "I loved the last three episodes, but I have a lot to say. I had a very hard time using CBS All Access on IOS or TVOS due to unlabeled buttons. I was able to sign in and watch Star Trek Discovery using Firefox and Amazon Prime. You can watch CBS All Access content through Amazon Prime. I am really annoyed at the fact that we can t get audio description right now for CBS All Access! I put up with this because I am a Star Trek fan, but I want every series and movie described! The issue with Dominos really disappoints me, and I do not understand why companies can t treat customers and potential employees as individuals who are fully capable of working for them or buying their products. I ve read lots of articles recently suggesting that a company s branding and bottom line improves when they are dedicated to diversity and inclusion. We should keep in mind that there are more people with invisible disabilities so we shouldn t just focus on the obvious physical disabilities. I m glad we have devices left with the home button and fingerprint censor, but I am disappointed with the McDonaldization of the cell phone market. It seems to me that Apple is telling us what we will get rather than giving us choices! I m sticking to my SE for as long as I can an have an iPhone 7 as a backup. I still like Apple because of Voiceover, and I even have an iPod Touch because of the headphone jack. This doesn t mean that I will go out there and buy a phone I don t want. In my view, Microsoft does a much better job in promoting consumer choice. I think the visually impaired community has a responsibility to support disability friendly businesses and products when possible. This is why I will stick with Microsoft and Apple even with my disappointment over no refresh on the iPhone SE. Rebecca Skipper" Juan had a little convention feedback and information on Ride Hailing outside the U.S.. "Hello Blind Bargains, Once again thanks for an amazing podcast. I really enjoyed the convention wrap up show. I enjoyed hearing about how things happened at the conventions, like how you needed to press a button to make the elevator's talk, or how you had to go to an underground parking garage to get Uber. When I went to Mexico, Uber is an option, but you cannot get it right outside of airports or some hotels, as these places have their own taxi services, and if you do want to get Uber, you must go across the street. Also, here in California, we have the chirps And coocoos, which are sometimes confusing to understand street light direction, and we also have streets with other sounds. In Woodland, my home town we have to press the button for more than five seconds to invoke the sound guidance, which can maybe burn or freeze your hand. I think the street sounds should be more understandable to everyone, and say which street you are crossing out loud. I wanted to ask you, when downloading NVDA will it come with all the add ons from past versions, like dictation bridge or do you have to remember to download these separately? Also, , can someone script NVDA to work with proprietary apps in a job setting? I also wanted to mention about the last word, that when I go buy a burger to go, I like reaching to the bottom of the bag and finding extra french fries. Also, in Old Sacramento; a tourist section of Sacramento, they used to have a tradition in one of the popcorn shops where they will give you a crumb bag. They would make bags out of the bottom of the popcorn pile, and sell it to people for $.75. I am not sure if they still do this. Keep up the good work! Thank you, Sincerely, Juan Manuel Avila" Keep the NVDA Blog bookmarked to learn more about the changes on the way in the upcoming 2019.3 update. Next, Stan Littrell dares to mention the spice that has no name for J.J.. "a couple comments on your latest bbq Since Envision AI was selling at a 75 percent discount over the regular lifetime buyout price I decided to make a purchase. I would never even get a subscription before this. I feel that this app represents just one more tool to put in the tool box. I still use Seeing AI for certain tasks. I think that Envision AI is a great up and comer to have in the tool kit. I still enjoy using the Galaxy IDMate for barcode scanning because it is easier to line up and find the barcodes. Since I already have the ID Mate it doesn't make sense not to use it. I use these other apps for testing purposes. I like the fact that we have options that we can use. We are now in everything pumpkin pie spice mode. I love pumpkin pie but I don't think that I will ever understand pumpkin pie spice flavored spam. That sounds so nasty." Last Word: Something witty usually occupies this space to warn you about the impending links below. Except, well, we got nothin' for this week's oddness. Was bringen NAS-Lösungen am Router? Wir kann man von "Außen" auf die Box zugreifen und damit das Heimnetz auch von Unterwegs steuern? Diese und weitere Themen werden wir in der Sendung am Freitag besprechen. Here's our teen correspondent, Simon Bonenfant.   Simon Bonenfant: Hello, everyone on Blind Abilities. This is Simon Bonenfant reporting from Las Vegas, Nevada at the 2019 National Federation of the Blind National Convention. I'm in the Exhibit Hall today, and I'm at the Amazon area here. I got a chance to talk to Peter Korn. How's it going, Peter?   Peter Korn: It's going very well. It's wonderful to be here at the NFB Convention in Las Vegas.   Simon Bonenfant: That's great. Can you explain to the listeners your title and a little bit about what you do at Amazon?   Peter Korn: Sure. This is my sixth year with Amazon. I'm the director of accessibility for all of our devices, and this is my 28th year in the field of accessibility, having cut my teeth on the outSPOKEN screen reader for Macintosh and Windows back in the mid-nineties.   Simon Bonenfant: Wow. So you have a lot of good accessibility knowledge. That's great. But what kind of features does Amazon offer for accessibility?   Peter Korn: Well, every device that we make has a host of accessibility features built in. We're standing right now in front of a Toshiba television, but this isn't just any Toshiba television, this is the Amazon Fire TV addition television. So it's got all of our Fire TV technology built into it. That means it has the VoiceView screen reader built in. It has our Magnifier built in. It has Alexa built in.   Peter Korn: Being a streaming television, it also means that I can stream Prime Video, and we have nearly 600 Prime Video titles with audio description. That includes every Amazon original title that we make, plus many things from Warner Brothers and so on.   Peter Korn: You can also watch Netflix or Hulu or Showtime or HBO on this television. And it's a television, so you can plug in an antenna and you can get over the air broadcast TV. If you're in one of the 60 major metropolitan areas, you can even get one of the few hours of audio described broadcast TV and enjoy that with description on this television.   Peter Korn: This is the 50-inch model. We have 20 different models, starting at 24 inches and an HD screen for 150 bucks, all the way up to a 55 inch, 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision model for $450.   Simon Bonenfant: Very cool. You have some Alexa enabled devices as well?   Peter Korn: If we come around this way, the newest of our Echo devices, this is the new Echo Show 5. The Show 5 is one of our Echo devices with a screen. It's a five-inch diagonal screen. It's got Amazon Alexa in it. Everything you can do with any other Alexa device, you can do with this one. Plus, if you want... You're sighted. You like the idea of having a little clock by your nightstand. This is the perfect size to display a nice big clock.   Peter Korn: It has a screen, which means it has VoiceView and it has our Magnifier, because we don't make screens and expect that people can use them if they don't have a screen reader on them.   Peter Korn: So I accidentally unplugged it as I pulled it forward. It's plugged back in and it's finishing booting up. It finished booting up and that's the VoiceView turning on sound that we've just heard.   Simon Bonenfant: Very nice.   Peter Korn: It's still finishing its boot up here. Once it's finished booting up, I'm going to ask it to do some stuff.   Peter Korn: I also have right next to it-   Alexa: VoiceView ready. 2:08 PM.   Peter Korn: ... Yes, dear. I have the Amazon Basics Alexa enabled microwave.   Simon Bonenfant: Yeah, I saw that yesterday. That was pretty cool. Yeah, talk about a little about that for us.   Peter Korn: Yeah. So this is $59.99 microwave will pair with Alexa, and I can use my voice to cook. So I'm going to take this little bag of Skinny Girl popcorn, pop it into the microwave, and then say, "Alexa, microwave one ounce of popcorn,"   Alexa: Starting popcorn. One Minute, eight seconds.   Simon Bonenfant: Wow.   Peter Korn: And there she goes.   Simon Bonenfant: And I can-   Peter Korn: And in little under a minute, we're going to have some hot buttered popcorn.   Simon Bonenfant: ... I can kind of hear it and I can kind of smell it too. It's kind of cooking.   Peter Korn: It is.   Simon Bonenfant: Wow. That is really neat. Yeah.   Peter Korn: Some of the newer, well for many years now, microwaves have had the ability to do fairly complex things like defrost a pound and a half of chicken.   Peter Korn: I do this many minutes at this low power setting, and then bring up the power for a few more minutes, and bring up the power again for the last few minutes, right? That little programming there. But typing all of that in on the touch panel is really difficult, but you can just use your voice-   Simon Bonenfant: And Alexa figures out the settings and the modes it needs.   Peter Korn: ... Exactly. So you can reheat your dinner, you can pop popcorn, you can say, "This much ground beef to defrost."   Simon Bonenfant: And it does it. Wow.   Peter Korn: And it just does it. And-   Simon Bonenfant: Really cool.   Peter Korn: ... Well-   Simon Bonenfant: And there it is.   Peter Korn: ... There's my popcorn.   Simon Bonenfant: Look at that. Wow. That's really cool.   Peter Korn: Just open it up here. It's nice and smoking hot.   Simon Bonenfant: It is. Wow. I can feel that. I smell it too. Wow, that's cool.   Peter Korn: If you want some hot popcorn, reach on in.   Simon Bonenfant: I'll try a little bit. Wow.   Peter Korn: And there you go.   Simon Bonenfant: I also noticed yesterday, I was over here and you had some tablets. Talk about them a little bit.   Peter Korn: These are the Fire tablets. We've got the seven-inch model for $49.99. Has VoiceView, has our Magnifier, has large print. You can watch movies, you can read Kindle books, you can play audio books.   Peter Korn: New this year, we have what's called hands-free Alexa, where there's a special chip in this tablet that allows it to be mostly asleep, but just quietly listening with a little bit of power for the wake word. And when you say it, she then responds.   Simon Bonenfant: That's cool.   Peter Korn: And that's again $49. It also has very powerful Braille support-   Simon Bonenfant: Wow.   Peter Korn: ... built in. We've been doing a lot to make a very efficient Braille interface. These Braille displays are fairly expensive. And you pay maybe a few hundred, maybe $700 for a 20-cell display. But for the most part, they're into the thousands of dollars.   Simon Bonenfant: Yeah, that's true.   Peter Korn: So those cells are really precious. So you don't want to waste a ton of space saying, "Checkbox checked," and then the name of the checkbox. That's already off the end of your 20-   Simon Bonenfant: Right. Yeah, yeah.   Peter Korn: ... Right? So we use special non-character Braille glyphs to tell you that it's a checked checkbox. We have-   Simon Bonenfant: So it's not going to take up cells.   Peter Korn: ... It's going to take up three cells.   Simon Bonenfant: Okay.   Peter Korn: To say this-   Simon Bonenfant: So it's a lot less. Wow. Okay.   Peter Korn: ... Exactly.   Simon Bonenfant: That's great. So you're getting more Braille for your space. You're optimizing the space and the Braille.   Peter Korn: Now at the same time, you've probably seen a lot of these tablets. You have a row of icons right on the home screen. And you focus one icon at a time and you put one icon's worth of text on the Braille display.   Peter Korn: Well, if it's Kindle, that's six letters. You still have another 14 characters on that display that you're not using. So we will create a line of multiple things on the same row. Though the same idea, we use as many of those precious cells as we can to make a more efficient interface, where the bottom of the screen, you've got back, home, and app switcher. B-A-C-K, space, H-O-M-E, space, A-P-P, and then the rest of it is off the end.   Peter Korn: I've got touch cursors over each cell. So when I navigate down to back, home, app switcher, I can just touch the button over, back or home-   Simon Bonenfant: And it'll do it.   Peter Korn: ... and it'll do it. I don't have to navigate through all three. I'm more efficient. I'm more productive.   Simon Bonenfant: Yeah, that is. Wow.   Peter Korn: So that's some of the innovation that's in VoiceView Braille available on all three tablets starting at 49 bucks.   Simon Bonenfant: Wow. That's available right now.   Peter Korn: Available right now. You can go to the Amazon store in the sky from your browser or from your iPhone, from your whatever, and order it. Well, fantastic. Thank you so much for coming by. Is there anything else I can help you with?   Simon Bonenfant: No, that's all for me. That's all for you. We're good. So thank you, Peter, for talking with me today. Thank you for talking to the listeners of the Blind Abilities podcast.   Simon Bonenfant: I'm very grateful for the work that you're doing at Amazon. You're doing a lot of good work for the community, the blindness community. And a lot of good things are coming because of your vast knowledge of accessibility and your drive to make things work well. I appreciate the work you do.   Peter Korn: It's just an utter pleasure to be in this field and to be at a company like Amazon that can have such a huge impact on the lives of our customers with disabilities.   Jeff Thompson: Thank you, Peter Korn. What is a podcast and how do I listen? A podcast is a free downloadable audio show that enables you to listen and learn while you're on the go.  To subscribe to my podcast for free, you'll need an app from which to listen to the show. For iPhone/iPad/iPod listeners – Grab your phone or device and go to the iTunes store and search “A Healthy Bite.”  This will help you to download the free Podcasts App (produced by Apple) and then subscribe to the show from within that app.  Every time I create a new episode, you'll get it downloaded right on your iDevice. Android listeners – Download the Stitcher Radio app (free) and search for “A Healthy Bite.” Podcast enthusiasts – If you already listen to podcasts and have a podcatcher that you prefer, the feed you'll need to add is https://www.thatorganicmom.com/feed/podcast Don't have a mobile device – You can always listen to the show by clicking the audio file at the top of this page.  Or go to https://www.thatorganicmom.com/podcast Also, it would mean a lot to me if you could leave a review for A Healthy Bite on iTunes!

This week on the podcast we're discussing the ins and outs of Apple's latest updates to their mobile and desktop operating systems, breaking warranties with Linux, and only sort of caring about the “death” of unlimited data. Also, we're helping you decide if you should build an XBMC home theater PC or just get Google TV, figuring out if your iDevice will actually run the new features in iOS 6, and learning that you actually can build your own iPod.
