In this episode of the Arts Management and Technology Lab, Daniel Temkin and Luna Lu discussed the artistic possibilities of code, focusing on esoteric programming languages (esolangs) and how they can function as a medium for art and human expression. Temkin explained that his interest began with experimenting in existing esolangs (like Brainfuck) around 2007-2008, leading him to create his own and document them conceptually, moving away from overly technical documentation. The conversation highlighted how giving up on the idea that programming must be practical allows for artistic exploration, connecting esolangs to idea art, constraint-based work (such as the Oulipo Group), and performance art. Temkin detailed the structure of his book, which presents programming languages as idea-based art, containing both realized works and conceptual prompts inspired by artists like Yoko Ono, and described how his languages — such as Fat Finger, which inspired code poetry, and Folders, which manipulates file system hierarchy — explore themes of collaboration, human irrationality, and the extreme constraints of logical systems. Listeners were also encouraged to explore existing esolangs on the Esolang Wiki before trying to design their own. Why the community moved on from appdirs to platformdirs At AppDirs: Note: This project has been officially deprecated. You may want to check out pypi.org/project/platformdirs/ which is a more active fork of appdirs. Thanks to everyone who has used appdirs. Shout out to ActiveState for the time they gave their employees to work on this over the years. Better than AppDirs: Works today, works tomorrow – new Python releases sometimes change low-level APIs (win32com, pathlib, Apple sandbox rules). platformdirs tracks those changes so your code keeps running. First-class typing – no more types-appdirs stubs; editors autocomplete paths as Path objects. Richer directory set – if you need a user's Downloads folder or a per-session runtime dir, there's a helper for it. Cleaner internals – rewritten to use pathlib, caching, and extensive test coverage; all platforms are exercised in CI. Community stewardship – the project lives in the PyPA orbit and gets security/compatibility patches quickly. Recently talked with Reuven Lerner about this on Talk Python too. In the next version, v3.0, PyArrow will be a required dependency, with pyarrow.string being the default type inferred for string data. PyArrow is 10 times faster. PyArrow offers columnar storage, which eliminates all that computational back and forth that comes with NumPy. PyArrow paves the way for running Pandas, by default, on Copy on Write mode, which improves memory and performance usage. Hey Friend, I got to sit down with the incredible Tracy Hoth, and let me tell you—she is the real deal! Tracy's a professional organizer with 17 years under her belt, a certified life coach, and the host of the globally ranked Organized Coach podcast. She's also the founder of Organized Coach Academy, where she helps coaches and online business owners get their entire life together—digitally, physically, and mentally—so they can lead their businesses with clarity and confidence. Tracy and I first connected through a mastermind course, and from the first time we exchanged emails, I knew I had to bring her on the podcast for YOU. If you're a Jesus-led career mom who's been dabbling in freelancing but you're finally ready to turn your God-given expertise into a full-blown online coaching, consulting, or professional service business and you want to stay organized without losing your mind, this episode is your blueprint. Here's what we're talking about: Why getting organized is one of the most critical parts of building a sustainable business. The five—yes, just five!—file folders you need to organize your business from day one. The biggest mistakes new business owners make with their files (and how to fix them fast). How to make digital and physical organization work together like a dream. Easy systems that help busy moms (like you and me!) stay on top of things without burning out. One small step you can take today to start getting your business files in order. If you've been praying for a sign to stop spinning in circles and finally feel like a CEO, this is it. So grab your notebook (and maybe a cup of something warm), and let's get into today's episode. I pray this empowers you! .
