Ellie Pell has just returned from representing the Trails Collective at the Bandera 100k Golden Ticket race. While there she secured second place after a hard fought battle with Utah's Leah Yingling. She plans to represent the east coast at the Western States 100 Mile race this June. In this interview, Ian Golden, owner of the Trails Collective and mentor to Ellie digs deep into what went into this race. He asks probing questions about race strategy, nutrition, psychology and takes questions from the Collective. This episode is the first of hopefully bright things to come from east coast runners on the national stage. Ellie's IG/Twitter: @gazzellie The Trails Collective
Cultra coming in HOT this week! We deep dive into the Northeast's toughest trail races (link below) with a huge thanks to Ian Golden for his tireless efforts not only compiling this list but all he does for Northeast trail running in general. Dude is the man! This episode can be filed under "Classic Jackassing". Would love to reiterate for the people in the back, and the people in the way back that this is not a "crew show" or a "gang show". I mean, having more than two people on a podcast was not invented in the upper Midwest, I mean- Trail Runner Nation had been doing that for a few years before anyone ran double digit junk miles. But ok, let's talk about that... I guess if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything will look like a nail. It's a podcast, it's not pie. Meaning, everyone can get a slice- the pie is infinite. Imagine if we started intimidating our listeners with chants of "you're dead to me" when they put on an episode of The Adventure Jogger. Weird flex, but you do you. Everyone needs an enemy I guess, real or imagined. Okay enough of that shit. Kevin Dames went to Fresno State as an Exercise Major, then moved to Colorado to get his PhD in bio mechanics. He now teaches others about how humans move and why they move that way, as well as applied statistics and research methods. He now lives in Cortlandt New York and allegedly occasionally hangs with Ian Golden and crosses paths with Ellie Pell. Translation: he is a cool dude. We talk apples, running, Ithica, running gate, and science. Plus what its like to run when you know the science behind your bonk. Ian Golden is a runner's runner. In his 43 years he has been around ultra and trail running for way more years than he should be and has popped up in various hotspots like Bend, Oregon and now Ithaca, NY helping the sport grow and flourish; all the while being an amazing advocate for the trails. He even tried his hand running for New York State Congress in his district. He is currently the father of three girls and the owner of Finger Lakes Running Company. He's a bit of a polymath as well- he's the man behind Red Newt Racing as well as his newest endeavor, the Trails Collective, a weekly video rundown of what's what in Northeast Trail and Ultra.
