Like the episode “24 Hours at the Golden Apple,” where “This American Life” reporters and producers completed shifts interviewing patrons and employees at a Chicago diner, the Montana Kaimin was inspired to find the “Golden Apple” of our college town. Pie Hole is a pizza place that has been open for about a decade. Seven days a week, it operates from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. It's become the go-to spot for the frenzied and famished. So we took shifts to interview customers and employees during the 14 hours of daily operation on a bustling Friday in downtown Missoula. On today's show, we're chatting with Sierra, who started her secondhand clothing business, Tailored Thrift, while she was a sophomore in college. She wanted to bring a curated selection of vintage and secondhand to her college town – and what started as popups and markets turned into a brick-and-mortar store. I loved hearing about how Sierra worked on her business, almost as a research project tackled alongside getting her fashion merchandising degree. She found that in her college town there was a large group of people who wanted to shop sustainable, but didn't feel like digging through the racks to thrift their clothing. We also shared stories of vintage shopping on travels – from Brimfield Market to the UK – and wild times at summer vintage markets in the Midwest. I loved getting to hear from Sierra's experience as a college student entrepreneur, and I know you will, too – so, let's dive right into it! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [4:44] Sierra wanted to be a fashion designer, starting in middle school, and she often upcycled her own pieces from the thrift store. [7:36] Sierra worked on her business, almost as a research project tackled alongside getting her fashion merchandising degree. [12:22] Getting started as a vintage business as a college sophomore. [15:51] Sierra's first forays into vintage markets, and what she learned from doing them all over the Midwest. [24:34] On her college campus, Sierra found lots of people who wanted to shop sustainably, but needed to figure out how. [29:13] How Tailored Thrift has appealed to the young shoppers in her college town. [32:08] Vintage sourcing from Brimfield to the UK [36:36] The 250 pound antique cash register that Sierra's mom got her for Christmas for the store. [38:57] Some of the fashion merchandising research Sierra put to use in her store. [43:51] Her love of vintage watches. In this inspiring episode, we sip cocktails with Tim and Alan, whose 30-year partnership has left a transformative mark on Ft. Lauderdale and Tallahasse. It all began in the early '90s when they started acquiring properties in the quiet Las Olas area, breathing new life into the neighborhood by operating restaurants and bars. From there, they pioneered micro-unit loft apartments in downtown Fort Lauderdale. But they didn't stop there. In 2009, they returned to their alma mater, Florida State University, to help develop College Town—a wildly successful mixed-use project featuring restaurants, bars, student housing, a hotel, and retail space. At the same time they began acquiring and assembling land in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Now, Tim and Allan are breaking ground on their biggest venture yet: FAT Village, a 5.6-acre, 835,000-square-foot mixed-use urban destination in Fort Lauderdale's Flagler Village, just north of the Brightline Station. Partnering with Hines, they're crafting a space that includes 600 multifamily units spread across two residential towers, 73,000 square feet of curated food, beverage, and entertainment offerings, art studios, galleries, and a state-of-the-art office space in Hines' signature heavy timber T3 (Timber, Transit, Technology) building. And that's just Phase I. Phase II promises even more, with an additional 250-unit multifamily tower, street-level retail, and expanded parking. This is the story of two visionary developers and entrepreneurs who started small and have quietly reshaped Fort Lauderdale. Today they own and operate 13 restaurants in South Florida and 1 one in Tallahassee. So grab a cocktail, kick back, and enjoy this incredible journey!Connect with usLooking to dive deeper into the Miami commercial real estate scene? We bust some brackets this week in honor of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, with a look back at the old East Coast Athletic Conference and the coaching cradle of city of Boston - with return (Episode 237) guest Clayton Trutor ("Boston Ball: Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun, Gary Williams, and the Forgotten Cradle of Basketball Coaches"). Before the formation of the original Big East Conference in 1979, much of DI college basketball in the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic was part of a loose patchwork of small conferences and independents that collectively fed into the not-really-a-conference ECAC umbrella for post-season playoffs, helping winnow at-large bids for a still-small NCAA tournament. Trutor helps set the stage through the early-career Boston exploits of three eventual Hall of Fame coaches: "Before Pitino became the face of the Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville programs, before Calhoun turned UConn into a national power, and before Williams brought Maryland to its first national championship, all three of these coaches cut their teeth in front of modest-sized crowds in the crumbling college gymnasiums of Boston during the 1970s and early 1980s. "'Boston Ball' charts how this trio of coaches, seemingly out of nowhere, started a basketball revolution: Pitino at Boston University, Calhoun at Northeastern University, and Williams at Boston College. Toiling in relative obscurity, they ignited a renaissance of the “city game,” a style of play built on fast-breaking up-tempo offense, pressure defense, and board crashing. Pitino, Calhoun, and Williams took advantage of the ample coaching opportunities in 'America's College Town' to craft their respective blueprints for building a winning program and turn their schools into regional powers, and these early coaching years served as their respective springboards to big-time college basketball." + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/good-seats-still-avalable?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS: Newspapers.com (promo code: GSA20): https://newspapers.com BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: Boston Ball: Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun, Gary Williams, and the Forgotten Cradle of Basketball Coaches (2023): https://amzn.to/3vtBrUX FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

00:00-25:00: Boston Ball author Clayton Trutor joins the show. From Amazon: Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun, and Gary Williams played no small role in the making of modern college basketball. Collectively, they've won more than 2,300 games and six national championships and reached thirteen Final Fours. All three have been enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Pitino, Calhoun, and Williams each spent more than two decades on the national stage, becoming celebrities in their own right as college basketball and March Madness became a multi-billion-dollar industry. Before Pitino became the face of the Providence, Kentucky, and Louisville programs, before Calhoun turned UConn into a national power, and before Williams brought Maryland to its first national championship, all three of these coaches cut their teeth in front of modest-sized crowds in the crumbling college gymnasiums of Boston during the 1970s and early 1980s. Boston Ball charts how this trio of coaches, seemingly out of nowhere, started a basketball revolution: Pitino at Boston University, Calhoun at Northeastern University, and Williams at Boston College. Toiling in relative obscurity, they ignited a renaissance of the “city game,” a style of play built on fast-breaking up-tempo offense, pressure defense, and board crashing. Part of a fraternity of great coaches—including Mike Jarvis, Kevin Mackey, and Tom Davis—they unknowingly invented Boston Ball, a simultaneously old and new path to the top of college basketball. Pitino, Calhoun, and Williams took advantage of the ample coaching opportunities in “America's College Town” to craft their respective blueprints for building a winning program and turn their schools into regional powers, and these early coaching years served as their respective springboards to big-time college basketball. Boston Ball is the story of how three ambitious young coaches learned their trade in the shadow of the dynastic Celtics, as well as the story of how the young players—in their recruitment, relationships, and basketball lives—made these teams into winners.

Show Notes: Women don't scream or fight back during sexual assaults and rapes due to protective brain responses and cultural conditioning. In this podcast, listen to the recent story of how World Cup soccer player Jenni Hermoso was forcibly kissed by soccer federation president Luis Rubiales and how this experience mirrors so many other times when girls and women have had their boundaries crossed. Learn the sobering statistics of how few rape cases are reported, prosecuted, and convicted and why this is so. Understand how the brain changes how it is encoding memories during sexual assaults which creates gaps in women's memories of the assault. Learn how quickly stress hormones are released by the brain during assaults and how these impair the prefrontal cortex and its ability to reason. Learn the brain and evolutionary reasons why women respond to terror and assaults by primitive brain responses such as freezing, tonic immobility, and dissociation. if the fear circuitry perceives escape as impossible and resistance as futile, then not fight or flight, but extreme survival reflexes (which scientists call “animal defense responses”) will take over to try to protect women. Women's body's are literally paralyzed by fear, thus making them unable to move, run, speak, or cry out. Women don't cry out because Broca's area of the brain, our speech center, shuts down as a way to not draw attention to them; thus, women are literally scared speechless. Dr. Jordan shares ways we need to approach girls and women who have been sexually assaulted or raped to make them feel safe, heard, understood, and supported. This will require education police officers, any first responders, ER staff, doctors and nurses, teachers, and parents. The Supreme Court of the United States is expected to deliver decisions on two cases concerning affirmative action in college admissions, including one case involving Harvard, in the coming weeks. The conservative-leaning court is anticipated to rule against the race-conscious admission practices used by elite schools like Harvard to promote a diversified student body, which the plaintiffs in each case argue are racially discriminatory. With Zoom school largely a thing of the past, college students are back to living on or near campus again. Between dormitories, apartments, and multifamily homes, there are an estimated 8.5 million student housing beds across the US with an projected increase to 9.2 million this decade. In this episode, I'm unpacking the factors contributing to the boom in student housing and the pros and cons this housing type poses to the surrounding communities. I'm also revisiting a conversation with Nick Falker of Cambridge Realty Partners to discuss The Elm, the firm's multifamily build in New Haven, Connecticut. Designed for Yale students and young professionals, The Elm is a six-story building with studios to four-bedroom options. It features bright, modern colors, a robust fitness center, conference rooms equipped with TVs and projectors, and a roof deck overlooking downtown and the Yale campus. New Haven appeals to many people for its walkability, foodie scene, and relief from overpopulation. Nick dives into who he thought would be the ideal renter for his build versus who currently occupies it, as well as the decisions he made that allow his build to compete with others in the city. Nick and I also discuss how to raise capital when just starting out, estimating renovation costs, and the effect the pandemic had on major US cities. About the Guest:Nick is the managing partner at Cambridge Realty Partners based in New Haven, Connecticut. The firm has been investing and developing in real estate opportunistically since 1978. Over that time, they have focused on office assets in the Northeast US, Texas, Mexico, and most recently, in multifamily in Connecticut. Nick previously worked at Cigna Realty Investors and Bristol Group. Topics Covered:The current state of student housingHow student housing differs from traditional multifamily housing The economic and social impacts student housing can have on surrounding areasThe specs and amenities of The Elm How the renter profile of The Elm has changed since the inception of the project The appeal of New Haven, Connecticut Resources Mentioned: The National Multifamily Housing Council: The Future of U.S. Student Housing Demand About Your Host:Atif Qadir is the Founder of Commonplace, a company dedicated to tackling one of the biggest barriers to more inclusive, affordable, and sustainable development: improving access to capital. Huntington, West Virginia, is an idyllic college town on the Ohio River, but it's also the epicenter of a massive international internet crime ring. Federal prosecutor Katie Robeson hasn't been on the job long when she learns that a woman in Huntington is acting as money mule, transferring millions of dollars overseas. Following the money, Katie and her team uncover an elaborate network of criminals, based in Huntington, targeting people all over the country.
America is filled with cities and towns that are built around a university, but no city better embraces the term "College Town" than the home of the University of Georgia; Athens, Georgia. Winners of the last two NCAA College Football National Championships, along 46 other team national titles across their nineteen sports, the Bulldogs have become one of the most dominant athletic programs in the United States. We are joined by Senior Writer covering the Cincinnati Reds for The Athletic, and Georgia alum, C. Trent Rosecrans, to talk about where his career in sports journalism got started, the rise of UGA's athletic teams, and how Athens might have claim to the best music town on Earth, as well. DATELINE brings their incredible investigative journalism skills together with the compassionate prose of the legendary Keith Morrison to report on the unfolding case of "KILLINGS IN A COLLEGE TOWN". This is the case on everyone's lips and screens which means seemingly everyone has an opinion and a theory as to what, how, and why these horrendous murders occurred in the wee hours of morning of November 13, 2022 in Moscow, Idaho. But no need to don your Sherlock Holmes cap yet, because with brand new interviews and details, Dateline is, of course, at the broadcasting forefront as a trusted source of solid, meticulous information. So, it's possibly a good thing Kimberly and Katie have been largely avoiding any coverage of the case to wait for the official details from the source they trust the most. These crimes are incredibly tragic, infuriating, baffling, and have captivated the nation and some parts of the world as people just want to understand what happened. So, a big thank you to the team at Dateline for their excellent and responsible reporting while we all try to make sense of the senseless.
