Ian Pearson-Brown was brought up with Newcastle United in his blood. He was there for the club's remarkable rise up through the leagues - and has followed them, home and away, from the heyday of Kevin Keegan's time in charge to the turbulence of the Mike Ashley era. Like many LGBTQ+ people, he struggled with his sexuality – and in his own words, he became ‘the most homophobic gay man you'd ever meet', as he hid the fact he was gay while sometimes even joining in with discriminatory chants on the terraces. So, to say that a young Ian would have been surprised to see himself as co-chair of United with Pride – Newcastle United's LGBTQ+ supporters group – would be a massive understatement! And speaking of understatements, it's fair to say that neither Ian nor United with Pride have had the easiest of times since the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle United was confirmed last month. So, there's plenty for us to get into in this episode – from United with Pride's decision to welcome and work with the new owners; what might make them reconsider that decision; the social media abuse they've received over the past few weeks; Ian's own love of Newcastle United; his own personal journey; some of his most memorable moments as a fan; and so much more. It's all in an episode that's sure to get people talking – and we're grateful that Ian has taken the time to join us for it. In this episode of The Small Print, Brownyn speaks to fellow futurist Dr Ian Pearson. They talk about some of the issues surrounding the contemporary environmental movement, which is characterised by good intentions but bad policy recommendations. Bronwyn and Ian discuss the need to become sustainable from a holistic perspective, which requires us to ensure that environmental protection does not come at the cost of human cultural aspects such as politics, economics and social harmony. --- Bronwyn Williams is a futurist, economist, trend analyst and host of The Small Print. In this episode I ask you to Imagine a World where no one dies. According to futurologist Dr. Ian Pearson we don’t have to wait that long for it to become reality. With today’s technological advancements our minds will be able to continue working flawlessly before the year of 2050. In this conversation we are discussing what such a reality implicates. What would be the consequences of an ever lasting mind? Who will be using this service and how does that affect humanity as we know it? Are there effects detrimental to our existence and what opportunities does it bring along? Why are we longing for immortality and what would we be using it for? What happens with us when older generations never die...? Can the law keep up with such drastic changes? For me this topic is mind blowing. It’s difficult to imagine a world where this is reality since everything we know or do is based on the knowledge that we will die one day. Listen in!
