J. G. Michael of Parallax Views joins Boris and Fritz to watch the 1985 anti-communist Cannon Films production, Invasion, USA, starring and co-written by Chuck Norris. They put the film in the historical context of the theme of Red Dawn-style Communist coup fiction beginning with the 1947 comic book, Is This Tomorrow, illustrated by Charles M. Schulz of Peanuts fame, and the original 1952 film that Chuck Norris later resurrected. For unknown reasons, another charming guest has visited the charm wasteland that is That Record Got Me High, and has left with her wits intact. Hillary Dougherty felt like Dave Grohl's solo-except-for-one-bit Foo Fighters debut needed polishing off, and since Rob LOVES Dave Grohl, I said "yes" while he wasn't looking. We dispel any caveats, though, finding that there's a lot to love, enjoy (and puzzle over) in this album, and Hillary definitely brings the groceries as a contributor. Camila Risso returns, bringing 1984's controversial, love it or hate it “My War,” the first in a string of dark, bleak, challenging albums by LA's seminal hardcore ensemble Black Flag. Side One gives the kids in the mosh pit a little something to write home about, but side two slips into a musical La Brea Tar Pit of heavy dirges topped with Henry Rollins' verbal self-immolations. It's great. Please support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH? Please visit our sponsor, Is This Tomorrow: http://isthistomorrow.com
That Record Got Me High is very pleased to have as our guest the fantastic and highly entertaining original member of Cleveland, Ohio's seminal Rocket from the Tombs – AND – NY punk rock icons Dead Boys – CHEETAH CHROME. He brings the goods with clarity about who, what, when and where, and hips us to a lyric we've puzzled over for decades. This was a great time for both of us, and we think you'll feel the same way. Another lovely and intelligent young woman has made the possibly career-ending and personally catastrophic decision to join us on our show. Her choice of subject is the game-changing and seminal album by Washington, D.C.’s Bad Brains, “I Against I,” the most successful album in the SST catalog. We cover a lot of ground, including the internal turmoil that drove the band and their album’s musical and production nods to a much less punk rock ensemble. Thanks again Camila for lending your charm and insight to our show, and for choosing a great album for us to discuss. Support That Record Got me High on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/TRGMH? This 1984 double album by Minutemen was (and continues to be) a peak, at the zenith of what Alternative Rock in the US aspired to in the 1980s. Over 40 songs of introspective beat poetry and political observations set to a totally legit, funky, angular soundtrack by three 1976 graduates from San Pedro High School. Proposition: This is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Counter-argument: ??? Rob and Barry take their seats and get schooled by D, Mike and George. Erin Lee from FM 104.3 The Shark picked this week's deluxe slab of wax, the debut album by Rivers Cuomo's pop science experiment Weezer. The conversation is lifted by Erin's deep love and knowledge of this band's history, and inevitably degraded by Rob and Barry's crude, coarse, low-class japes, asides and bogus conclusions. But that's the point of the show, right? Thanks Erin for being a great guest. We'll do better next time, I promise. We conclude our first season of 48 episodes with a visit from beloved local Emile Blair Milgrim, co-founder of Miami Girls Rock Camp, Managing Partner of Sweat Records, and drummer for Las Nubes amongst other "diversions." Her pick of Jeff Buckley's posthumous “Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" makes for great speculation – would'a could'a should'a. We talk to Lydia Yee, curator of Whitechapel Gallery’s ‘Is This Tomorrow?’. Plus: artist Andy Holden on his animation project, ‘Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape’, and Ece Temelkuran’s book, ‘How To Lose A Country’.
Barry, Rob and Ivan Soliani go further back than we ever have to the 1967 masterpiece by Pete, Roger, John and Keith, The Who Sell Out. Although it contains their one and only US hit single (“I Can See For Miles”), the balance of the album is a quirky collection of songs interspersed with clever commercials. Some of the songs rate amongst the best the band ever recorded, and it has become a favorite of many who in earlier decades would have picked “Who’s Next” without any hesitation. Recorded live at The Laser Wolf, with thanks to Chris Bellus, and as always thanks to our sponsor Is This Tomorrow (www.isthistomorrow.com).
Tammy Lynne discusses her debut novel, SUGAR LAND and will discuss race and class, sexuality & identity, with her signature wit and style. SUGAR LAND, a Southern-fried novel, is getting RAVE reviews (see just a few below)—please check out her site to find out more about the little-known true story of the musician Lead Belly who became the inspiration for this incredibly poignant work. “The love child of Fannie Flagg and Rita Mae Brown, Stoner is sure to win her own devoted following with this ravishing debut.” –STARRED Kirkus Review “Sugar Land is a well written book and its writing style reminds one at times of Doris Lessing. There is a beautiful flow to the narrative, and the plot is expertly crafted. This is writing at its finest, resulting in a good story that is well told.”—New York Review of Books* “How can you not adore a novel about love, food, and how working in a prison can help you discover whom you really are? Every page has a beating heart, every character is so alive, you swear you hear them breathing. Stoner is an original and this debut is just fantastic.” —Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You "In this always surprising and exhilarating first novel, Stoner presents a memorable character. A lovely debut that addresses race and class, sexuality and identity."—BOOKLIST "Sugar Land is a raw, spiraling, hopeful story… Stoner brings this unmistakable world to life perfectly” —Forward Sugar Land is the southern story of Nana Dara, a prison cook in the Imperial State Prison Farm in 1923, who—with the help of the blues singer Lead Belly—discovers how to break out of her own physical and emotional prison to become the feisty, lesbian matriarch to a family of Texas misfits.
Last week we had a Duran Duran fanatic, and this week we follow suit with a Siouxsie & The Banshees superfan, Woody Compton, half of the web comic “Is This Tomorrow.” We struggle to find fault with anything in this album, and it's place in the pantheon is well-deserved. Juju is a masterpiece, and perhaps the late John McGeoch's finest half of an hour.
