This year, the question prompted me to begin digging through my 25+ hours of recordings to find the gems from 2024. I decided to edit some of them together and share them here. Of course, this is just a small sampling and doesn't include Barbara's many treasures. One of my New Year's resolutions is to try doing more reading and less watching. Joyce Maynard has been publishing since she was 13 years old. She first came to national attention with the publication of her New York Times cover story, “An Eighteen Year Old Looks Back on Life,” in 1972, when she was a freshman at Yale. Since then, she has published 20 books, including the New York Times bestselling novel, Labor Day and To Die For (both adapted for film), Under the Influence and the memoirs, At Home in the World and The Best of Us. Count the Ways —the story of a marriage and a divorce, and the children who survived it— was published in 2021. Its sequel, How the Light Gets In, came out last week. Joyce joins Marrie Stone to talk about it, including sustaining characters over two novels and how she knew she wasn't finished with this family yet. She also talks about her ongoing obsessions and the importance of writing those obsessions down, her advice on not writing prematurely, her heavy use of white boards and what they look like, how to incorporate politics and the external world into fiction, her mother's writing advice that she shares with her students, and more. Fifty years ago, The New York Times Magazine featured Joyce Maynard on its cover for an essay she wrote entitled “An 18-Year-Old Looks Back on Life.” That story would catapult her to national prominence but also mark a traumatic beginning to a celebrated career as a prolific novelist and memoir writer. Unwittingly, Maynard became part of a MeToo scandal with iconic novelist J.D. Salinger long before male predatory behavior was in the news. She survived that affair to become an acclaimed, prolific author— penning 13 novels and 5 works of non-fiction, two of which were adapted for film. On the pod, she talks about her newest masterpiece, How the Light Gets In, getting canceled in the 90s, returning to Yale as a middle age mom to get a degree, reading and writing with ADHD, and the best writing advice she was ever given.  Follow Joyce on Facebook: joycemaynardauthor Sign up for my online Writing Masterclass on June 27 @ https://bit.ly/smallmasterclass

Writer, comedian, and Lydia Tár's former publicist Daniella Mazzio joins to discuss Gus Van Sant's sharp, pitch-black satire of media, true crime, and a patently American brand of late 20th Century celebrity, 'To Die For'. The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, itself inspired by the true life trial of Pamela Smart, who seduced a teenage boy and coerced him and a friend to murder Smart's husband. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators. Then, we examine the brilliant, kaleidoscopic script by 'The Graduate' screenwriter Buck Henry and how the film's patchwork construction foregrounds it thematically rich details. Finally, we discuss the real life inspiration for the film as well as the way the movie's indictment of the American media landscape anticipated elements of the OJ Simpson trial, which was playing out during the film's production and concluded just days before its release. (Editor's Note: This episode was recorded before OJ Simpson's death on April 10th, 2024 at the age of 76).Follow Daniella Mazzio on Twitter. [originally published on Patreon Dec 7, 2021] Today's episode is nuts. I don't hear anyone referring to Salinger as a spy, and yet he was very much a spy. He served in the army's counterintelligence corps where, as it turns out, he saw some remarkable and horrific things. Then  possibly got brainwashed by Nazis? I'm legitimately not joking; he was at least in the position to be brainwashed. After that, he married a Nazi spy and brought her to the US. I discuss his spiritual dilettantism, and then I go over the Joyce Maynard affair, pulling out a few very curious details that rarely get addressed. Then of course I talk about the curious role the Catcher in the Rye has played in various assassinations, and what might be in the novel that would catch the eye of an assassin. To wrap it up, I discuss the possibility that the novel contains Freemasonic themes and messages.  Songs: "Catcher in the Rye" - Dandy Warhols "fais moi mal Johnny" - Boris Vian "Catcher in the Rye" - GRANT "Everything is Gonna Be Alright" - John Hinckley Jr.

SalingerIn 1972, a teenager named Joyce Maynard wrote a New York Times magazine piece titled “An 18-Year-Old Looks Back at Life.” The daughter of artistic, brilliant parents who had many issues and tended to treat her as an adult--she was precocious and a veteran of magazine writing by the time she graduated from high school. Written during her first year at Yale, one of her fan letters was from 53-year-old J.D. Salinger--one of the most famous “genius” reclusives living in New Hampshire. The two had a correspondence, which led to a relationship where she moved in with him and gradually shrunk herself away from the world. Until he carelessly dumped her.Turns out she is NOT the only young person who falls under his romantic spell. Also, she has some other messiness going on in her life. In this special holiday episode of Shelf Life, we took time out from our regular format to see what  guests old and new read in 2022. The episode starts with Joyce Maynard, who shot to fame with her 1998 memoir At Home in the World, in which she wrote candidly about the traumatic relationship she had with the author of Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger. But Maynard has also written many novels including Labor Day and To Die For, both made into acclaimed movies, as well as (more recently), Count the Ways.   After discovering what books found their way onto Joyce's reading list in 2022 we pose the same question to Darcey Steinke, author of Suicide Blonde, Jesus Saves, and Flash Count Diary, among others, before rounding out the show with the legendary Edmund White, now 82, a pioneer in contemporary queer fiction (A Boy's Own Story, The Beautiful Room is Empty)  and still writing up a storm (a new novel is due in May 2023) and the irrepressible director, writer, and performer John Waters, a debut novelist himself in 2022 with Liarmouth: A Feel Bad Romance.
