All four teams in the NFC South made very different quarterback bets the last two years.Carolina sold the farm for Bryce Young. Tampa Bay went thrifting for Baker Mayfield. New Orleans paid Derek Carr as the missing piece. And Atlanta, of course, shocked the football world by signing Kirk Cousins and drafting Michael Penix Jr. To wrap up our divisional preview podcasts, it only makes sense to welcome back former Bucs quarterback Shaun King. His debut was one of my recent favorites. King didn't hold back on his first appearance — here's that audio/video and Q&A, icymi. Now, the man who brought Tampa Bay within one controversial call of a Super Bowl in 1999 brings strong opinions on all five of those quarterbacks… and a few more for good measure. He's all-in on Mayfield and promises the Bucs googles have nothing to do with it.Audio and video is above, and you can also access this episode everywhere you pod, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube. We're in agreement: Mike Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the NFL.The man nearly led a Duck Hodges-quarterbacked club to the playoffs. He knows how to muck a game up and will forever ensure his team's in the playoff mix. But when it comes to the quarterback position, this is the plan? I was critical of the pivot back in the spring — Russell Wilson just may be expired milk — because, frankly, you get what you pay for at this position. There's a reason Justin Fields came so cheap, a reason the Denver Broncos are paying Wilson so much not to be their QB1.Does Tomlin see something others do not? His defense should be loaded once again.Nobody should be shocked if Joe Burrow goes scorched earth this season, too.To make sense of the entire AFC North, let's bring on a podcasting pro: Dave Dameshek. You may remember “Sheky” from his NFL Network days and make sure you add his excellent Minus Three podcast to your library. Dave's also a fantastic regular guest on the The Adam Carolla Show.Audio and video of our conversation is above, and you can access the show everywhere you pod, including Apple and Spotify. Patrick Mahomes is a different competitive species. This is a quarterback who hears management secured him a left tackle and — re-fueled with adrenaline — immediately chips a shot out of the 16th-hole bunker at Augusta within six feet of the cup. There's plenty of magic to the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, the best player in the sport tries to make history. No team in the Super Bowl Era has strung together three straight Super Bowl wins. Here at Go Long, the great Michael MacCambridge delivered a three-part series detailing the Chiefs' mountainous challenge ahead. MacCambridge, author of the timeless “America's Game,” analyzed the eight teams that won back-to-back Super Bowls — with a sharp look ahead to the 2024 Chiefs. So, let's continue the conversation here on the podcast.MacCambridge joins me to discuss his series, which of those eight teams were most fascinating and whether or not the Chiefs can complete the three-peat. As he says, “this is the most competitive era in the history of the NFL.” (Especially in the AFC.)In the spirit of our division-by-division preview podcasts, we also touch on those Los Angeles Chargers. Jim Harbaugh's schedule is set up to realistically win 10 or 11 games this season. You can catch audio and video of this episode above, as well as Apple, Spotify and our Go Long TD YouTube channel. New here? It's a perfect time to subscribe! In addition to MacCambridge's series, we've got a three-parter live for paid subscribers on the New York Giants meticulous rebuild. Turnarounds don't always slap us in the face. The Giants are hoping a more holistic, Detroit Lions-like reconstruction pays off. The San Francisco 49ers came within inches of another Super Bowl. This is a roster loaded with talent — Hall of Fame-level talent — at important positions. And yet? This offseason exposed fractures. As of this posting, the status of Brandon Aiyuk remains a mystery. We expect San Francisco to be in the NFC title conversation again, obviously, but a door has cracked open for the Los Angeles Rams. Kristin J. Jacobson In her new book, The American Adrenaline Narrative (University of Georgia Press), Kristin Jacobson considers the nature of perilous outdoor adventure tales, their gendered biases, and how they simultaneously promote and hinder ecological sustainability. To explore these themes, Jacobson defines and compares adrenaline narratives by a range of American authors published after the first Earth Day in 1970, a time frame selected as a watershed moment for the contemporary American environmental movement. The forty-plus years since that day also mark the rise in the popularity and marketing of many things as "extreme," including sports, jobs, travel, beverages, gum, makeovers, laundry detergent, and even the environmental movement itself. Jacobson maps the American eco-imagination via adrenaline narratives, surveying a range of popular and lesser-known primary texts by American authors, including best-sellers such as Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air and Aron Ralston's Between a Rock and a Hard Place. She also covers lesser-known novels as well as stories found in all types of media ranging from magazines, feature-length and short films, television shows, amateur videos, social media posts, advertising, and blogs. Jacobson argues for recognizing adrenaline narratives as a distinctive genre because, unlike traditional nature, travel, and sports writing, adrenaline narratives sustain heightened risk or the element of the "extreme" within a natural setting. Additionally, these narratives provide important insight into the American environmental imagination's connection to masculinity and adventure––knowledge that helps us grasp the current climate crisis and see how narrative understanding provides a needed intervention. Kristin Jacobson is a professor of American literature, American Studies, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Stockton University in New Jersey. She completed her Ph.D. at Penn State, her M.A. at the University of Colorado-Boulder, and her B.A. at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. This episode we return to the works of Jon Krakauer to discuss Into Thin Air, the true story of a group of climbers ascending Everest when tragedy strikes. We're cheating a bit this episode, however, because Everest — despite being based on the same events — isn't technically an adaptation of Into Thin Air, but this unique situation gives us plenty to discuss, along with the rigors of high altitude climbing, the horror story vibes of the novel, and the ethical dilemma of sprinkling fiction into a "true story" of tragic events.

Sam and Adrian are joined by author Will Cockrell to discuss his new book titled "Everest Inc." Will, who has covered the Mt Everest climbing season as a journalist for nearly 2 decades, chronicles the development of an industry that, each spring, becomes a focal point of the outdoor media.Everest Inc.: The Renegades and Rogues Who Built an Industry at the Top of the WorldFeaturing original interviews with mountain guides and climbers—including Jimmy Chin and Conrad Anker—this vivid and authoritative adventure history chronicles one of the least likely industries on guided climbing on Mount Everest.Anyone who has read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air or has seen a recent photo of climbers standing in line to get to the top of Everest may think they have the mountain pretty well figured out. It's an extreme landscape where bad weather and incredible altitude can occasionally kill, but more so an overcrowded, trashed-out recreation destination where rich clients pad their egos—and social media feeds—while exploiting local Sherpas. There's some truth to these clichés, but they're a sliver of the story. Unlike any book to date, Everest, Inc. gets to the heart of the mountain through the definitive story of its greatest the Himalayan guiding industry. It all began in the 1980s with a few boot-strapping entrepreneurs who paired raw courage and naked ambition with a new style of expedition planning. Many of them are still living and climbing today, and as a result of their astonishing success, ninety percent of the people now on Everest are clients or employees of guided expeditions.Studded with quotes from original interviews with more than a hundred western and Sherpa climbers, clients, writers, filmmakers, and even a Hollywood actor, Everest, Inc. foregrounds the voices of the people who have made the mountain what it is today. And while there is plenty of high-altitude drama in unpacking the last forty years of Everest tragedy and triumph, it ultimately transcends stereotypes and tells the uplifting counternarrative of the army of journeymen and women who have made people's dreams come true, and of the Nepalis who are pushing the industry into the future.

Knife River by Justine Champine: When Jess was 13 years old her mother disappeared, which is something she and her sister Liz struggled with for years. Now living in NYC, Jess receives a phone call one day to say that her mother's remains have been found, which takes her back to the small town of Knife River where she grew up. She moves back into her childhood home where her sister has been living as if frozen in time, and now the two of them wait for the authorities to determine what happened, but the discovery of the remains raises more questions than answers. This is a book with real emotional depth – two very different siblings suddenly under one roof together again, each inhabiting very different worlds but both staring down the same mystery.  Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer: This was originally published 27 years ago, but remains one of the most gripping narrative nonfiction books ever written and it's now been reissued. The author was on assignment for Outdoor magazine in 1996 and sent to Everest to write about the growing commercialisation of the mountain. He was an accomplished climber and joined Kiwi Rob Hall's expedition to the summit which turned into a terrible tragedy when Krakauer himself collapsed and then five other climbers died, and a 6th lost his hand through frostbite – it was the worst season in the history of Mt Everest. In this book he tells the story about what happened but also ponders on what it is that drives so many people to attempt the climb. It's a terrific read.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Smoke by Michael Brissenden. Crime……Detective Alex Markov returns to her hometown of Jasper, California after a stint with the LAPD where she's been accused of corruption – some good ole boys on the force there want her gone – but her colleagues back at the Jasper precinct don't want her either. After a wildfire sweeps through the town a body is found in a shed, and the other cops are certain it's just a casualty of the fire – but turns out the shed was locked from the outside. As Alex investigates she discovers a really dark underbelly to the town which seems to be for sale to the highest bidder, and the authorities are playing games within games, where she's the prize pawn.  Everest, Inc. by Will Cockrell. In the 1980s, some entrepreneurial climbers started offering guided tours up Mt Everest – which has ballooned into an enormous industry where today, more than 90 percent of people who go to climb the mountain are clients or employees of guided expeditions. It's morphed from being a heroic endeavour on the part of individuals, to becoming Big Business. There's been triumph and tragedy along the way – notably the expedition which included Jon Krakauer (author of Into Thin Air) and during which five people died, among them New Zealander Rob Hall. New Zealand guides have been very active on the mountain, though today several of the big companies operating there are owned and staffed by the Nepalese. The book is subtitled The Renegades and Rogues who Built an Industry at the top of the World – which is exactly what they did.  LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lies and Weddings by Kevin Kwan  Rufus Leung Gresham, future Duke of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus's scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister's wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who's-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.  Should he marry Solène de Courcy, a French hotel heiress with honey blond tresses and a royal bloodline? Should he pursue Martha Dung, the tattooed venture capital genius who passes out billions like lollipops? Or should he follow his heart, betray his family, squander his legacy, and finally confess his love to the literal girl next door, the humble daughter of a doctor, Eden Tong? When a volcanic eruption burns through the nuptials and a hot mic exposes a secret tryst, the Gresham family plans—and their reputation—go up in flames.  Can the once-great dukedom rise from the ashes? In 2024, Everest has become completely commercialized. Shock, right? Well, Will Cockrell's new book, Everest, Inc: The Renegades and Rogues Who Built an Industry at the Top of the World, tells us how it happened. If you love Everest, despise it or don't really care, this book has something for everyone. In this fascinating read, Will did extensive research and uses quotes from original interviews with more than a hundred Western and Sherpa climbers, clients, writers, filmmakers, and even a Hollywood actor; the voices of the people who have made the mountain what it is today. In this Podcast, Will tells me that he positioned Everest, Inc. as the opposite of Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air. His book gets to the heart of the mountain through the definitive story of its greatest invention: the Himalayan guiding industry. It all began in the 1980s with entrepreneurs like Rob Hall and Gary Ball, Todd Burleson and David Breashears, with Dick Bass establishing a new, innovative industry for climbing high-altitude mountains, including Mt. Everest. Many of the pioneers are still living and climbing today and have helped thousands reach their climbing dreams. I talk through the three areas of commercialization with Will: the industry's formation in the 1980s and '90s, the early 2000s, when Western companions dominated guiding climbing Nepal, and the late 2000s, until today, when Nepali-owned operators lead 80% of all commercial clients. It feels like it has been years since we have chatted because of the holidays, so we were feeling super chatty and giddy- which of course we had to get that completely out of our systems because of what we decided to do with our last case of 2023.. Taylar has taken over the episode to bring you the extremely suspicious disappearance of 31 year old, wife and mother of two- Joan Risch. In Lincoln, MA on October 24, 1961, Joan Risch was solo parenting for 48 hours while her husband was on a work trip when she vanished, leaving behind her children, belongings, a bloodied kitchen and home. The case quickly went cold, but as the years have gone by, little clues have popped up pointing back to Joan- including library books. Yet, 62 years later Joan's case is unsolved. What Happened to Joan Risch? ***Theories are being discussed in the final section of this episode concerning various pieces of this case that are not based in fact, rather the stretching of facts to try and make a conclusion- complete speculation. John Chizmadia is an entrepreneur, business developer, husband, father, and grandfather. A scholar athlete, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Political Science. He founded and was CEO of a computer hardware and software distribution company, which as part of its claim to fame, launched many tech brands that are household names today. He has a passion for history, has traveled extensively, and has used his many life experiences as the core foundation for his literary work. John and his wife (of 48 years) have lived in Colorado for 30 years. CLIMATE SCAM is a Historical Narrative of nearly 40 years of scams about climate  control. Meticulously researched, the book presents a summary and commentary of articles, interviews, debates, and opinions about a story perpetuated by politicians, business leaders, “climate scientists”, and the gullible. The presenters claimed they could save the world from burning up; in many cases their audiences believed them even though ALL the predictions were wrong. Glaciers didn't melt, coasts weren't flooded, and polar bears weren't starving. When Al Gore got into the act and his movie, "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH", became a hit, the money train took off. "Send money NOW!! There's no time to  waste!" The book is written very much in the style of Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals", William Manchester's "American Caesar", Henry Steel Commager's "The Blue and the Gray", and John Krakauer's "Into Thin Air." The reader will very quickly sense the decades of deception, robbery,  character assassinations, and get rich quick schemes that have and still are affecting everybody in the world. https://twitter.com/ClimateScam https://www.climatescamthebook.com/ ========= About Tom Nelson: https://linktr.ee/tomanelson1 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL89cj_OtPeenLkWMmdwcT8Dt0DGMb8RGR Twitter: https://twitter.com/tan123 Summaries of all my podcasts: https://tomn.substack.com/p/podcast-summaries Substack: https://tomn.substack.com/ About Tom: https://tomn.substack.com/about

Jacqueline's PickJacqueline enjoyed Five Survive by New York Times bestselling author Holly Jackson. Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends. When their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, they soon realize this is no accident. They have been trapped by someone out there in the dark, someone who clearly wants one of them dead. With eight hours until dawn, the six friends must escape, or figure out which of them is the target.Pairing: No-Bake Peanut Butter Protein Cookies, a yummy road-trip treat.Michael's PickMichael took a trip to Mount Everest with Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book, Into Thin Air. Working for Outside magazine, Krakauer was given the opportunity to ascend Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, during the 1996 climbing season on Rob Hall's team, Hall being one of the most experienced and respected climbers and guides in the world. They were about to witness one of the deadliest days in the mountain's history. A storm rolled in on summit day that ultimately left eight people dead. This is Krakauer's personal account of that expedition, relying on interviews with others to corroborate his experiences and provide perspective.Pairing: A hot cup of Masala Chai.Carrie's PickCarrie went on an adventure with The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee, a YA novel that takes place in the 18th century. Felicity Montague wants to become a doctor, but the English and Scottish hospital boards she appeals to for apprenticeship turn her down because of her gender. When she learns that one of her medical idols is about to marry her childhood best friend and may need an assistant, she sets out for Germany to plead her case. A total of 15 people perished during the spring 1996 climbing season at Everest. Between 1980 and 2002, 91 climbers died during the attempt.Closing song: Where did you sleep last night? Welcome to Episode 380 of The Outdoor Biz Podcast and my conversation with Joe Peters, Marketing Director, Strategic Advisor, and Creative Ideator with Vasque Footwear. You can contact me here: email: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com or leave me a message on Speakpipe! Presented to by: Show Notes How did you get connected to Vasque? It was 11 years ago. I've been with Vasque in one way, shape, or form for 11 years now. Vasque is the outdoor brand within the Red Wing Shoe Company. So Red Wing Boots has been around for more than 115 years. I was looking for boots online. I was on jcrew.com shopping for Boots. For Red Wing Heritage Boots. Then for whatever reason, I moved to click on the careers tab and found a job in of all things demand planning. I threw my name into the hat for that and that started my career at Red Wing Shoe Company. How did you get into the Outdoor Industry? I would say the outdoor industry kind of found me more than I was out to find a job in the outdoor industry. I didn't know it existed before I found Red Wing and by proxy Vasque. Now you're, after all these experiences, you are the marketing director for Vasque, right? So what's a day in the life for Joe as the marketing director? For the Vasque brand specifically? That's a great question. I mean, it depends upon the day, right? That's one of the beauties of this job. It's one of the things that I just love about it is, no day is the same. There are elements of my days that are planned and elements that are very much unplanned. I typically on a general day try to carve out 45 minutes to not be on a Zoom call, or not be in a meeting and you know, journal and think and assess. But I have to be very deliberate with that because if I didn't, I would be in meetings from eight to five every single. The beauty of my role is I need to keep an eye outside of the walls of Vasque. Looking at culture, looking at the outdoor industry as a whole. Looking at everything within the cultural zeitgeist to ensure that this brand is staying relevant. How much travel is there, is there a lot of travel other than trade shows? I would say. Yeah, there was a lot, a lot of travel before the pandemic. There was a point where, I've got two kids who are now six and a half, and five Once I landed in Tokyo and my wife sent me a video of my little kids. They were probably, three and four at the time, swinging on the swing set in the backyard. And there was an airplane that flew up over the house and both of them pointed at the airplane and they said, daddy. Yea, so there was a point where I was traveling a lot. You recently posted something about changes at Vasque. Can you share anything about that with us yet? Yeah, we're finally beyond the lockdown. So it's a new brand platform for Vasque. We know through our research that the number one reason people go outdoors is to find a sense of escape from the stressors of our daily life lives. And we did this research both pre-pandemic, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic. We found that the average American at the height of the pandemic was spending 12 hours a day staring at a screen. Let that sink in for a minute. 12 hours a day. And while that number has thankfully come down as the world is started to open back up, the average American now as of 2023, late 2022, still spent seven hours looking at screens per day. With that research, we identified the simple fact that it's possible that screens play a major role in deterring people from going outside. So the new log outside platform is really out to mindfully change that, and really gently pull people off of their screens if only for 30 minutes a day So how's it work? It's kind of a multifaceted approach. We flipped all of our channels with a new aesthetic. We're not telling people to throw their phones away or anything like that. These things have unlocked opportunities we didn't know possible. Right? We're basically trying to illustrate the fact that there are real tangible things just outside the screen. And we've kind of really flipped most of our channels to be more of a gentle invitation slash reminder that life exists outside this thing. How were you introduced to the outside lifestyle? Oh man, I grew up on a small acreage outside of a small town in rural Minnesota. Some of my first memories, I was probably five or six years old, and I was just out. We had some acres and I would just go out in the morning on a Saturday with a backpack and spend the day out there exploring. How'd you get into cycling? I got into cycling, during college up in Duluth. We utilized cycling as a recovery mechanism. I was a baseball pitcher. And that's what we would do on our days off. We would cycle or we would run, et cetera. So I got into cycling a little bit. Then after college,  did a bike ride across the state of Iowa called the Rag Brai. What other outdoor activities do you do? We camp in the backyard quite a bit. We're lucky enough to live right above the Mississippi River in St. Paul. And we have a waterfall across the street from our house that runs into the Mississippi River. It's called Shadow Falls. And you know, I look at my childhood experience of having such easy access. to being outside in a very safe way. I grew up out in the country. My children are growing up in the middle of twin cities. But we're so blessed to have a ton of green space around our house. So I spun up this little Shadow Falls Explorers Club. There are three, well, there are four members counting my wife, so my two children, myself, and my wife. And, we try to get out and become as familiar as possible with our surroundings so they're comfortable. we got all the gear we need. So I do a lot of hiking with my kids. I was a swimmer growing up as well, so I do a fair amount of swimming in the summer and a lot of cycling. What is, what are your suggestions and advice for folks that want to get into the Outdoor Biz? I think just being interested in the business side of it, I guess, right? There's no shortage of people that are interested in the outdoors. Having the opportunity to work in an industry that empowers so many people to live healthy lives is super attractive. It's a great, great place to work. I think, really subscribing to the OIA. So much great research is made available, in bits and pieces from the OIA. What's your favorite piece of outdoor gear under a hundred dollars? Oh gosh. We're gonna put the air quotes on gear and I'm gonna do a PSA. My favorite piece of outdoor gear that's most critical to my longevity and my success is an eight-ounce bottle of sunscreen. Gotta protect yourself from the sun tangentially to that I suppose is one of those big, you know, uh, bucket hats from Outdoor Research that protect your face and your neck from the UV rays that can really get people into some trouble. What are a couple of your favorite books? You know, my reading list as of late is, um, really not that interesting. Reports, Spreadsheets, I'm reading the Harvard Business Review collection on Strategy, Managing People, Leadership, Change Management, those are good books, et cetera. I would say that kind of the first book that I read that really opened my eyes to like the sense of adventure was probably something that's been brought up hundreds of times, but it's a book called Into Thin Air by John Krakauer. Bill Bryson, all of his hits are amazing. So those are some of the few. I'm reading a book right now by the manager of the Grateful Dead. It's fascinating. About the early days, kind of the trajectory of what I'm gonna go on the record and say to be the best band in the world. Is there anything else you'd like to say to or ask of our listeners? Oh man, thank you, for listening. Thank you for making it all the way here. I appreciate the time. I would say a plug for Vasque. If you know about us through the years, check us out again. We're definitely evolving the way we're operating. Our products are evolving the way you go outside. And this new brand platform is really, We hope is impactful to the betterment of people's lives. And I say that so genuinely. It's something that we're really proud of, we're really passionate about. The last thing would be if you're outside, good on ya. And if you're not, try to find 30 minutes today and get out there. Follow up with Joe @hellojoepeters on Instagram Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin. I'm on all the channels. In 1996 author Jon Krakauer joined a Mount Everest expedition to document the recent commercialization of the world's highest peak. As an experienced alpinist, Krakauer understood the inherent dangers of climbing at extreme altitudes, but nothing could have prepared him for the events that unfolded on May 10-11, resulting in one of the deadliest days in the history of Everest.  Into Thin Air recounts the entire expedition in vivid detail from the recollection of those who survived and questions how money effects decision making in a high altitude life and death situation.Released in 1997, Into Thin Air is a national bestseller, was adapted into a movie and is considered a must-read adventure book.

Show Notes: Can we please find better alternatives then the military for young adults to experience risk, adventure, mission, and purpose? Dr. Jordan was inspired to do this podcast after reading three books: Pat Tillman: Where Men Win Glory; Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer; a soon to be published book from his friend Ginny Luther about her son Bart's military experience Pat Tillman was an active, intense, rambunctious kid who loved roughhousing, being loud, taking risks, and was constantly in trouble for his behaviors. He walked away from a multimillion-dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals NFL football team to join the army after the 9/11 attack, becoming an icon on post-9/11 patriotism. The fact that Pat believed the Iraq war to be illegal and about false reports of weapons of mass destruction did not prevent him from wanting desperately to get into the fight, face the enemy fire alongside his comrades, to prove himself in battle, and become a part of a rarefied warrior culture. Like many young men, he had aspired to engage in mortal combat since being a little boy, itching to confront the enemy firsthand and prove themselves under fire. Sadly, two years into his service he was killed in action from bullets from his own troops, unleashing a government coverup. Jon Krakauer joined an expedition to climb the summit of Mt. Everest, despite the large number of fatalities of past climbers. Much of his motivation for the climb came from his belief that achieving the summit of a mountain was tangible, immutable, concrete; the incumbent hazards lent the activity a seriousness of purpose that was sorely missing from the rest of his life; “I thrilled in the fresh perspective that came from tipping the ordinary plane of existence on end.” Another climber, John Taske, wrote that, “When I left the military, I sort of lost my way. I discovered I couldn't really speak to civilians; my marriage fell apart. But when I started to climb, the sport provided most of what had been missing for me in civilian life, the challenge, the camaraderie, the sense of mission.” Dr. Jordan describes the temperament of many natural born risktakers: independent-minded, intense, risk-takers, physical, restless, active, love the outdoors. These kids are often described as: hyperactive, wild, can't sit still, out-of-control, impulsive, ODD, not listen, don't like to be told no, want things their way, intense, stubborn, willful, like a wild colt kicking against the slats of their corral. Nousheen started working with this team in the middle of the project. At the time, the team had one month to go live. However, Nousheen noticed that the team was demotivated, and there was a lot of blaming behavior happening in the team meetings. In this episode, we discuss how teams can sometimes push themselves beyond what's acceptable, and forget about self-care and sustainability.  In this segment we talk about the Three Amigos meeting, a method to help teams prepare the requirements/User Stories in time, and with the right perspectives.  Featured Book of the Week: Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer The book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer tells the story of how very experienced people can fail. The book explores the disaster that occurred in Mount Everest on 10–11 May 1996, and how good intentions, and the desire to “achieve the summit” (literally) created a complex set of factors that ultimately led great people to make some very bad decisions. It's a book filled with lessons for Scrum Masters, even those that work with great teams! How can Angela (the Agile Coach) quickly build healthy relationships with the teams she's supposed to help? What were the steps she followed to help the Breeze App team fight off the competition? Find out how Angela helped Naomi and the team go from “behind” to being ahead of Intuition Bank, by focusing on the people! Download the first 4 chapters of the BOOK for FREE while it is in Beta! In January of this year I read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air which documents the tragedy on Mount Everest in May, 1996. Krakauer happened to be part of a doomed expedition and recorded the disaster, wherein eight climbers died on the mountain over the span of 24 hours, in excruciating detail. I realize now that seeking out mountaineering challenges in the wake of that reading is probably a strange reaction, but most of the book is not about the tragedy itself, but the context and lead-up to it. A good chunk of Into Thin Air investigates why people become obsessed with mountain climbing. For many, including Krakauer, it's about achievement in a very pure and physical sense. You either get the summit or you don't. That stark line between success and failure, and the terrible beauty of big, deadly mountains has an allure that I cannot deny. I'm not going to pretend that this expedition was anything akin to the rigor or peril of something like Everest, but it was my first, proper mountaineering expedition, and fraught with many of the same dangers one finds in any significant alpine endeavor. Nearly half of our party of twelve clients did not summit for one reason or another, though everyone returned to the trailhead safely. I set out on this adventure with my dad and my flight-instructor-turned-great-friend, Jason. https://uppbeat.io/t/richard-smithson/search-lightLicense code: J4UBGNVRDUPNZBK4 https://uppbeat.io/t/vens-adams/adventure-is-callingLicense code: ENDHVU1JXMEC9OZO Photo Credits for Grand Teton stills (in videocast version): Fiona Foster David Herring (Unsplash) Toan Chu (Unsplash)

HULU's recent mini-series "Under the Banner of Heaven" based on the 2003 Jon Krakauer book with the same title has led to listeners emailing to ask about the accuracy of the book and mini-series.  In this episode host Martin Tanner explains how Krakauer in this and prior books leaves out critical facts, paints heroes as bad and suffers from other major flaws.  Among them are (1) the misleading idea that Ron and Dan Lafferty are "Mormons" when they were earlier excommunicated and had started their own church; (2) the lie that Lafferty's murdered because they were following the "oath of vengeance" in LDS Temples, when there has never been such an oath; (3) Ron and Dan were influenced by Brigham Young who ordered the massacre at "Mountain Meadows" even though Brigham Young explicitly and in writing did the opposite.  Krakauer's methodologies in "Under the Benner of Heaven" on consistently bad, just as in his prior book "Into Thin Air" in which he criticizes a competing Mt. Everest guide who saved all of his hikers, when Krakauer's group suffered the death of eight climbers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
