General Introduction:Louise Pollock is currently the Professor of Trombone at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Before that, she served as the principal trombone of the Göteborg Opera while also teaching at the University of Göteborg Academy of Music and Drama. Alongside her orchestral work, Louise has earned several prestigious awards, including the First Prize and Audience Prize at the International Aeolus Competition for Wind Instruments in 2016.But what really makes this conversation special isn't just her impressive resume—it's the journey she's taken to get to where she is today. For anyone who has dreams and is willing to put in the work to achieve them, this episode will be especially inspiring.I first met Louise when I was teaching at the Musik Hochschule in Freiburg, and she came in as a first-year student. She was quiet, a little shy, but what really stood out was her work ethic. She practiced more than anyone else at the school. Even back then, I could tell she had something special and was destined for a great career because she was willing to outwork everyone around her, but always in a smart, thoughtful way.And to give you a little spoiler, when I asked Louise what advice she would give to young students, her answer was powerful: "If I can do it, you can do it too."Part 1:In the first part of our conversation, we dive deep into the topic of auditions and the preparation that goes into them. Louise shares her experiences, both as a student auditioning for music schools and later, as a professional auditioning for orchestras and competitions. From there, we shift to discuss teaching—Louise reflects on her journey from a new teacher in Göteborg to her current role as a professor in Berlin. We also talk about her experiences playing in an orchestra, and Louise opens up about the incredible sense of community she feels within the brass world.Part 2: [Subscriber Content]In this segment, we focus almost entirely on Louise's time studying with Branimir Slokar. She shares what she learned from him and why she holds him in such high regard as a teacher. We also touch on her unparalleled work ethic, particularly during her time at the Freiburg Musik Hochschule, a period I can personally vouch for as being one of intense dedication and hard work.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? Tireless in my pursuit of good storytelling, I'm a painter, design educator, author, illustrator, and former architectural designer, who is best known for paintings that depict anthropomorphic characterizations of famous buildings and other iconography. My work often focuses on urban and New York-related subjects. Largely Surrealist, objective, and contemporary, these pieces are characterized by their intricate detailing and symbolism. Common themes explored in my work include love, mood, satire, domestic life, architecture, global events, utopian ideals, dystopian imagery, film noir, and spirituality. I am the recipient of numerous art and design awards, including the 2015 First Prize in Architecture from the City College of New York's 8th Annual Graduate Student Symposium, and the 2006 VASA (Visual Arts Scholastic Award) from the West Valley Art Museum. Arcadia News describes my work as "aware of the problems our world faces," and "a way to bring positivity into the world."

Episode 192 was recorded July 13, 2024 and published August 6, 2024. Dhwani Shah's film, "Sapling" won the First Prize in the Short Film Competition in the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego. Dhwani and her team attended the festival in person in April 2024. I had an introspective conversation with Dhwani about filmmaking and the making of her winning film. It's evident in our discussion how talented and skilled Dhwani Shah is as a film director, writer and editor. It was a great honor to discuss the craft and art of filmmaking as a language. “Cinematography comes from photography, comes from, you know, fine arts and painting and compositions…all those disciplines are really old, but the one true language of filmmaking is editing.” Dhwani Shah SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking: The Voice of Mobile Film™ is for everyone who ever wanted to or is curious about making movies and videos using smartphones. Teatime with Miss Liz on June 11th, 3 pm EST, Bringing you all an important message on the Elephant Matriarch Project and her book “Terriers in the Jungle” The best-selling author and Co-Founder George Umano Meet My Guest: Georja Umano is an animal activist who has organized, spoken and written about animals and animal causes in the US, Italy and Kenya, especially in the fields of elephant and wildlife conservation. She is also a film, TV and theatre actress, stand-up comedian, teacher and journalist. She has earned a B.A. in English Literature at LeMoyne College and an M.A. in Educational Theatre at New York University. Her acting career started in New York, and she always leaned toward comedy. She appeared on all the episodes of a sitcom with Ed Asner, “Off the Rack,” played the title character in an award-winning short film, “The Godmother,” and was nominated for awards for her theatrical performance in “Kaballah” with Avery Shriver. She has performed stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, San Diego, and ten other states. Things changed when she got a dog, and she quickly became an avid animal advocate and feature journalist. She produced and starred in a cable show/web series with her dog, “The Georja and Marcello Show.” Soon afterward, she got involved with elephants. She went to Africa six times. The last time she decided to move there was when she brought her two rescue dogs and her husband, author Gerald Everett Jones. In her new novel, TERRIERS IN THE JUNGLE, she wrote about many of their adventures, including her plans to create “The Elephant Matriarch School” in Kenya. The novel is narrated by her dogs! As a young woman, Georja experienced a vivid past-life regression in which she was a young child whose mother was killed by an elephant hunter, and she was raised by elephants. While staying in Kenya, she realized that she was an elephant in that past life. Now, she knows many elephants in Kenya, has adopted many orphaned elephants, and has hugged many of them. TERRIERS IN THE JUNGLE won First Prize in Animal Fiction at The BookFest 2022. Many people say this book should become a movie, and Georja is working on that project now.Georjaumano.comElephantMatriarach.org#teatimewithmissliz #misslizteatime #makingadifferencetogether #animalactivist#elephants#kenya #actress #awardwinning #author #joinus #livestreaming #podcastshow #likefollowshare
Leaving home one morning, Dean found some friends waiting with balloons. His friend Josh stepped forward. “We entered your poems in a competition,” he said, before handing Dean an envelope. Inside was a card that read ‘First Prize,’ and soon everyone was crying tears of joy. Dean’s friends had done a beautiful thing, confirming his writing talent. Weeping for joy is a paradoxical experience. Tears are normally a response to pain, not joy; and joy is normally expressed with laughter, not tears. Italian psychologists have noted that tears of joy come at times of deep personal meaning—like when we feel deeply loved or achieve a major goal. This led them to conclude that tears of joy are pointers to the meaning of our lives. I imagine tears of joy erupting everywhere Jesus went. How could the parents of the man born blind not weep for joy when Jesus healed him (John 9:1-9), or Mary and Martha after He raised their brother from death (11:38-43)? When God’s people are brought into a restored world, “Tears of joy will stream down their faces,” God says, “and I will lead them home with great care” (Jeremiah 31:9 nlt). If tears of joy show us the meaning of our lives, imagine that great day to come. As tears stream down our faces, we’ll know without doubt that the meaning of life has always been to live intimately with Him.
"It's interesting to compare the process of creating an image with writing. In photography, I find myself editing the scene to highlight what draws my interest, focusing on the essence and minimizing distractions. This approach is similar to writing, where the goal is to strip away the superfluous to communicate the core message clearly. Both processes involve a pathway to clarity, whether it's through the lens or on the page." — G.B. Smith Tune into this episode of "Uncorking a Story" for a deep dive into the soul-stirring world of Gary Smith's photography, where every image is a pathway to a story waiting to be told. Meet G.B. Smith G.B. Smith is an international award winning fine art photographer. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss his career and book Pathways, which was awarded First Prize at the prestigious International Photography Awards in the Book Category. The book features select photos from many of Smith's current collections, including several of his recent multi-award winning images. Key Topics: Early Beginnings: Gary's love for photography ignited in the industrial heartland of England, sparked by his first camera as a teenager and his fascination with the technical aspects of photography. The Art and Science of Photography: Exploring the magic of darkroom photography, Gary discusses the meticulous process of film development and how it instills a deep appreciation for each image captured. Transition from Career to Passion: Gary shares his journey from seeing photography as a potential career to embracing it as a passionate hobby, highlighting the challenges of commercial photography and the liberation found in creating art for oneself. The Making of "Pathways": The creation of his book "Pathways" emerged from a collaboration with talented individuals and became a tribute to his journey as a photographer, as well as a charitable endeavor supporting breast cancer research. A Vision in Black and White: Delving into his preference for black and white imagery, Gary reveals how color blindness influences his focus on form and texture, leading to a unique and captivating aesthetic. The Beauty in Decluttering: Gary emphasizes the importance of removing clutter from scenes to focus on the essence of the image, drawing parallels to the necessity of clarity and focus in life and art. Discoveries and Reflections: Reflecting on his experiences and the places photography has taken him, Gary shares insights into how photography has been a force of discovery, meditation, and connection with the world. Synopsis On today's date in 1953, at New York's 92nd Street “Y,” the Walden String Quartet tackled the difficult First String Quartet of American composer Elliott Carter. Carter's Quartet was as densely-packed with ideas as a page from James Joyce— – an author the composer cited as an influence. But, writing for the Herald Tribune, composer Virgil Thomson gave the work a glowing review: “The piece is complex of texture, delicious in sound, richly expressive, and in every way grand— – the audience loved it,” wrote Thomson. That same year Carter's Quartet won First Prize in the International String Quartet competition in Belgium -- – a contest Carter entered almost as an afterthought. “My First Quartet was written largely for my own satisfaction and grew out of an effort to understand myself,” he said. To escape from the distractions of New York, Carter retreated to the desert near Tucson to write it. No one had commissioned the Quartet, and Carter initially feared its complexity would baffle performers and audiences. His next quartet, equally challenging, won a Pulitzer Prize. Complexity would characterize Carter's music for the next 50 years—although the composer himself insisted that fantasy and invention, rather than difficulty for its own sake, had always been his goal. Esteban Castro is a 20 year old pianist and composer who is on his way to becoming one of America's most accomplished jazz artists. He is a finalist for the American Pianists Awards (APA) competition, hosted here in Indianapolis, and I had the chance to interview him the day before his Premiere Series jazz trio concert at the Jazz Kitchen! Esteban attends the Juilliard School on a full-tuition scholarship, studying with Ted Rosenthal, and he also studies privately with Fred Hersch. At age thirteen, Esteban was the First Prize Winner in the Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition in 2016, making him the youngest ever to receive this prestigious award. At fourteen, he was the youngest First Prize recipient at the 2017 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. With over forty compositions to his name, Esteban has garnered three ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards and has won fifteen Downbeat Student Music Awards. He was selected as a pianist for the Grammy Band in 2017 and 2018, as a 2019 YoungArts Finalist, and as a member of the 2019 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. In addition, Esteban has won a variety of classical piano competitions(!). Esteban has played to sold-out audiences in venues such as The Blue Note, The Montreux Jazz Club, The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and Dizzy's Club, and at a number of international venues. I was honored to get the chance to speak with Esteban, to hear about his life in music, his approach to improvisation and composition, and what winning the APA jazz competition would mean to him. I was inspired by the conversation, and I hope you enjoy it.
