If you were alive when Fried Green Tomatoes came out -- first Fannie Flagg's book, then the movie -- you may recall it was a phenomenon. To a (very) young Ali Clayton, it was a bit of a personal phenomenon, its only-kinda-coded queerness calling out to her before she even knew why. But beyond that, it was a movie about Southern women in a South that Ali recognized -- one where bad things can happen, but good people are holding each other up through it all. Then Jordan has one quick thing about last weekend's big win for cinemas & cinemagoing.Listen to Y'all Gay?Check out Country Queer***With Jordan Crucchiola and Ali Clayton Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. In honor of Women's History Month, I've selected four films featuring what I like to call “Wonder Women.” These are women who are brave, kind, strong, and all-around wonderful. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list—simply four films that resonate with me personally as a woman, and you should watch, whether you're a woman or not. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)First up is the 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Fried Green Tomatoes. The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy, among others. Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay. This film flashes between the 1920s and the 1980s, looking at Wonder Women through all stages of life. No matter where you find yourself, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film to enjoy with the wonderful women in your life. Steel Magnolias (1989)Next up is Steel Magnolias from 1989. Focusing on southern women's culture in the 1980s, Steel Magnolias highlights the friendship among six women who must persevere through difficult circumstances. Starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt, Steel Magnolias expertly blends comedy and drama, making a great movie full of Wonder Women. 9 to 5 (1980)The second Dolly Parton film in today's line-up is 9 to 5. The film, in addition to Dolly Parton, features Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. Highlighting 1980s office politics that are unfortunately still all too relevant today, 9 to 5 tackles serious women's issues with humor, making their points even more effective and poignant. This is a great laugh after the tear-jerking drama after Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. Alien (1979)The last film in our Wonder Women selections is 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph, Alien, is a phenomenal sci-fi horror film. Alien's leading wonder woman, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is an amazing sci-fi heroine. She's smart, brave, and resourceful, totes a flamethrower, and has a kitty-cat sidekick. What more do you want in a film about a Wonder Woman? We hope you enjoy these films and come back and see us next week on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Actor, writer and dramatist Fannie Flagg is the triple threat of show business. From the stage to the page, Fannie has graced us with some of our favorite stories: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man, and more. Flagg's script for the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was nominated for an Academy Award and the Writers Guild of America Award, and won the highly regarded Scripter Award for best screenplay of the year. But the award Fannie treasures above all others came in 2012 when she traveled to Monroeville, Alabama, to receive the Harper Lee Prize for fiction from her longtime friend and mentor, Harper Lee. Fannie closes our 2023 You Are What You Read episodes on a high note as she takes us through her sparkling career from Birmingham, Alabama to Hollywood, California and everywhere else in between. As a baby, Oswald T. Campbell was left on the steps of an orphanage with a can of Campbell's soup in his basket. Readers meet him as he receives disheartening news from his doctor; he won't live to see another Christmas if he doesn't move to a better climate than the Windy City. Sadly, Oswald has no one to share his devastating news with… sounds like a bummer of a book, doesn't it? But, somehow Fannie Flagg weaves a story of hope, evolving from less concern from self and more concern for others and the tale does a 180. We all have wounds, some are visible, like the young girl, Patsy, who has a crippled leg. Others' hurts are hidden, like Roy who suffers from a broken heart and our protagonist, Oswald, who has been haunted by rejection his whole life. Oswald goes to Alabama and meets Jack, a redbird that eats Crackerjacks, who helps Roy run the General Store, a crippled girl named Patsy, and a host of other colorful characters. The community envelopes Oswald with love and care. He recognizes he has a talent for painting and he is included in all the community's events. He helps Patsy not feel so bad about not knowing her birthday when he decides to celebrate Patsy's, Jack's and his birthdays altogether because all their birthdays are unknown. Join us as we recap this heart-warming festive read. The beginning may be dark but trust us the conclusion is the bee's knees!!! Y'all know that I love a good quote: after all, it's one of the opening questions I have asked each one of my guests for the podcast, and today is no different. However, I'd love to throw in a bonus quote for you today from a famous movie that includes fried green tomatoes, the Whistle Stop Cafe, and Fannie Flagg. “It's funny when you're a child, you think time will never go by, but when you hit about twenty, time passes like you're on the fast train to Memphis. I guess life just slips up on everybody. It sure did on me.” I find this quote so relevant to both the conversation in this episode and as we navigate through this third half of life. Today's guest is dear to my heart and actually the mom of Melissa Stecher, who I chatted to all the way back in episode 14. Kim Stetcher is a devout Catholic Christian and keener than her beans gardener. Listen in as we chat about: Building a circle of love. A prayer group that has been going strong since 2004 and provided phenomenal support even more than anyone thought possible. How Kim's gardening love has developed and played a part in her life through her dad, family, mentors, and working career. Starting small with seeds and now growing to schedules, plans, and all the wisdom along the way. The difference between heirloom seeds can make and how Kim's family is now on board to build a legacy and help her produce enough to share with friends, family and support services in the community. How to start, even if you're a complete beginner. The benefits of growing your own produce and how easy it can be to start with a seed. Kim is developing ways to share her wisdom and skills, and in the meantime, I invite you to reach out to me with any questions and comments at teachingyourselftolearn@gmail.com or via the website www.teachingyourselftolearn.com. Book: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café By Fannie Flagg Film: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café (1991) Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a 1987 novel by American author Fannie Flagg. Set in Alabama, it weaves together the past and the present through the blossoming friendship between Evelyn Couch, a middle-aged housewife, and Ninny Threadgoode, an elderly woman who lives in a nursing home. Every week Evelyn visits Ninny, who recounts stories of her youth in Whistle Stop, Alabama, where her sister-in-law, Idgie, and her friend, Ruth, ran a café. These stories, along with Ninny's friendship, enable Evelyn to begin a new, satisfying life while allowing the people and stories of Ninny's youth to live on. The book explores themes of family, aging, lesbianism, and the dehumanizing effects of racism on both black and white people. Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 American comedy-drama film directed by Jon Avnet and based on Fannie Flagg's 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. “One thing I really have learned—or at least for myself about writing—is never to explain why a person is the way they are, just to make a dramatic case for why they are the way they are. So, the moments I have that are backstory, or that go back and forth in time, it's because that backstory or that moment of slippage of time is dramatically relevant to the present moment of the story.” Alice Elliott Dark (In the Gloaming) returns with Fellowship Point, a spectacular novel of friendship and family, love and loss, loyalty and legacy. This beloved chronicle of Southern female friendship was lauded by GLAAD for its portrayal of a lesbian relationship, though not everyone agreed its depictions of lesbianism and race were as accurate and empowering as some wanted to believe. Gabby and Amy revisit this '90s classic with fresh eyes and find both its charm and its shortcomings apparent.

Awake has received incredible testimonials from spiritual luminaries like #1 New York Times bestselling authors Iyanla Vanzant and Marci Shimoff as well as Jean Houston among others. In Awake Dayna has fulfilled her desire to write a spiritual sci-fi novel inspired by the life changing extraterrestrial encounter she had many years ago while camping in Sedona, Arizona. We also shared our pairings including Alan Bradley's The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, and Fannie Flagg's Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man. Sara, Jen, and Ashley all have different levels of experience with this classic novel, so it was super fun discussing our personal experiences with it! Curated News Pruning Hydrangeas | Fine Gardening | Janet Carson Important Events September 21, 1866 Birth of H. G. Wells (Herbert George), English writer. Although his work spanned many genres, he is remembered as one of the fathers of science fiction, along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback. Growing up, H.G.'s father was a gardener, and flowers figured into many of his books. In The Flowering of the Strange Orchid (1894), an orchid collector eventually dies by orchid after cultivating an unknown predatory specimen found under the body of a dead plant explorer. In The History of Mr. Polly (1910), Uncle Penstemon was named after a flower. In The Time Machine (1895), he wrote, And I have by me, for my comfort, two strange white flowers - shriveled now, and brown and flat and brittle - to witness that even when mind and strength had gone, gratitude and a mutual tenderness still lived on in the heart of men. In The Secret Places of the Heart, he wrote, All the English flowers came from Shakespeare. I don't know what we did before his time. There is one final example of garden kismet for H.G. Wells: his gardener, Ethelind Fearon, was also a writer in her spare time. H.G. once wrote, Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature's inexorable imperative. September 21, 1872 Birth of Robert Hiester Montgomery, American accountant, educator, and gardener. When he wasn't busy co-founding the world's largest accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Robert worked with his favorite plants: conifers and tropical trees. In 1930, he set up a winter home in Florida and began buying every type of palm tree grown in the state. His impressive collection of over 700 trees inspired him to call his place the Coconut Grove Palmetum. In 1936, he founded the Fairchild Tropical Garden (Coconut Grove, Florida). Seven years later, Robert died after one of his daily walks with his wife, Nell, beneath his beloved palm trees. Today, the Palmetum property is known as the Montgomery Botanical Center. September 21, 1944 Birth of Fannie Flagg, American actress, comedian, and author. Best-known as a semi-regular panelist on the TV game show Match Game, she also wrote Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (1987), which was made into the movie Fried Green Tomatoes (1991). Her latest book, The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop (2020), is about the power of returning to your roots. A daughter of Alabama, Fannie writes among the flowers of her California garden. In The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion (2014), she wrote about the natural beauty of Fairhope, Alabama: They had arrived on a warm, balmy evening, and the soft night air had been filled with the scent of honeysuckle and wisteria. She could still remember coming down the hill and seeing the lights of Mobile, sparkling and twinkling across the water, just like a jeweled necklace. It was as if they had just entered into a fairyland. The Spanish moss hanging from the trees had looked bright silver in the moonlight and made dancing shadows all along the road. And the shrimp boats out in the bay, with their little blinking green lights, had looked just like Christmas. Unearthed Words What's the date? “September 8, 1998.” Where you from?” “Next July.” We sit down at the table. Kimy is doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. What's going on next July? “It's been a very cool summer; your garden's looking good. All the tech stocks are up. You should buy some Apple stock in January.” She makes a note on a piece of brown paper bag. “Okay. And you? How are you doing? How's Clare? You guys got a baby yet?” ― Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler's Wife Grow That Garden Library Uprooted by Page Dickey This book came out in 2020 (I bought my copy in November), and the subtitle is A Gardener Reflects on Beginning Again. When Margaret Roach reviewed this book, she wrote, An intimate, lesson-filled story of what happens when one of America's best-known garden writers transplants herself, rooting into a deeper partnership with nature than ever before. If you've ever moved away from a beloved garden, or there is a move in your future, you'll find Page's book to be especially appealing. Uprooted is Page's story about leaving her beloved iconic garden at Duck Hill - a landscape she molded and refined for thirty-four years. The new property covers seventeen acres of fields and woodland in northwestern Connecticut. The rolling land surrounds a Methodist Church, which inspired Page to call her new space Church House. How does a seasoned gardener (at age 74) start again? How does said gardener leave a beloved home and garden and stay open to new possibilities? Uprooted gives us the chance to follow Page through all the major milestones as she discovers her new homeplace. We hear all about her home search, how she established her new garden spaces, and some of her revelations as she learns to evolve as a gardener. If you've ever wondered how on earth you'll ever leave your garden, Page will give you hope. And, if you're thinking about revamping an old garden space or starting a new garden, you can learn from Page how to create a garden that will bring you joy. As an accomplished garden writer, Page's book is a fabulous read, and the photography is top-notch. And although the move from Duck Hill marked a horticultural turning point in her life, Page surprisingly found herself excited and reenergized by her brand new space at Church House. This book is 244 pages of the evolution of a gardener as she transitions from Duck Hill to Church House - bringing with her lifelong love of nature, gardens, and landscape possibilities. You can get a copy of Uprooted by Page Dickey and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $6 Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart September 21, 1947 Birth of Stephen King, best-selling American author of horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, crime, science-fiction, and fantasy novels. In 1982, he stood for a photo by the famous gate to his property. Known as the spider gate, the custom-made gothic wrought iron masterpiece featured spiders and ravens. I thought I'd end today's show with some garden-related excerpts from Stephen's work through the years. Each quote has that Stephen King edge: From The Shining (1977) His relationship with his father had been like the unfurling of some flower of beautiful potential, which, when wholly opened, turned out to be blighted inside. From Night Shift (1978) Having a breakdown was like breaking a vase and then gluing it back together. You could never trust yourself to handle that vase again with any surety. You couldn't put a flower in it because flowers need water, and water might dissolve the glue. Am I crazy, then? From The Eyes of the Dragon (1984) I think that real friendship always makes us feel such sweet gratitude because the world almost always seems like a very hard desert, and the flowers that grow there seem to grow against such high odds. From It (1986) ...you could only protect your child through watchfulness and love, that you must tend a child as you tended a garden, fertilizing, weeding, and yes, occasionally pruning and thinning, as much as that hurt. From The Institute (2019), “Might have done better to get rid of him,” Annie said matter-of-factly. “Plenty of room for a body at t'far end of the garden.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
