Remember Ian Malcolm, Jeff Goldblum's character from Jurassic Park? He's a scientist interested in an esoteric branch of mathematics called chaos theory, the study of unpredictable behaviour in systems governed by deterministic laws.I'd like unpack that preceding paragraph into three points:Chaos theory is legit form of math. Jeff Golblum's character Malcolm was awesome and goes onto appear in two sequels.Unpredictably is what makes the future complicated.Today's podcast focuses primarily on this third point. If we knew what would happen when we introduce change we'd always make better decisions. We don't, however, always know what the repercussions will be.Or do we?Myrna Bittner and her company RUNWITHIT Synthetics have devised a way to construct synthetic cities for the express purpose of gaining a better understanding of how the introduction of "unpredictable behaviour in systems governed by deterministic laws" impacts the whole. To quote Bittner, "we do that all using what we call synthetic modeling, which is like SimCity except for real, for real cities, for real populations, for climate events."BAM. Prepare to have your mind blown.BioMyrna Bittner Myrna is the CEO and Co-Founder of RUNWITHIT Synthetics, an advanced data modelling and visualization company designing decarbonization, sustainability, equity, resilience, and growth initiatives globally. A movie about a mustache the world is wrong about and what a man will do to get his wife to accept it. Directed by David Koepp. Starring Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Jeff Golblum & Olivia Munn How is the world wrong about this film? From ANDRAS: “Mortdecai” is a brilliantly acted, big budget comedy about a mustache. It's a controversial topic to some. I’ve happily watched countless films about murder and driving and jealousy and Christmas. These are subjects that are not that interesting to me but if the film is well acted and well-made like, say, “Slap Shot” (a movie about a sport I have never paid attention to) I can appreciate it. The impact of a mustache on a man’s life? That’s something I have lived. It’s a subject that moves me. The scorn heaped upon this film for its exploration of this topic is not that dissimilar from those who voice their disapproval whenever a man lay’s claim to the “sovereign ground” which is his upper lip. There are probably a thousand zombie movies. Can we have just one mustache movie? Mad Dog Time aka Trigger Happy is the ultimate The World Is Wrong film and if all we ever did was produce this episode our service to cinema would be commendable. This is the most underrated, star-studded Jewish gangster film directed in the style of Dean Martin ever produced and this episode features an interview with the writer/director himself, LARRY BISHOP!!! TO VIEW THE FILM: https://vimeo.com/448814171 Link to the episode on our website: https://www.theworldiswrongpodcast.com/episodes-of-the-world-is-wrong-movie-podcast/episode-01-maddogtimeakatriggerhappy Directed by Larry Bishop. Starring Jeff Golblum, Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Barkin, Gabriel Byrne, Gregory Hines, Kyle MacLachlan, Diane Lane, Henry Silva, Michael J. Pollard, Angie Everhart, Burt Reynolds, Paul Anka, Billy Idol, Rob Reiner, Richard Pryor, Christopher Jones and Larry Bishop. From Andras: This is the film that inspired me to want to do a podcast like this. I discovered it on a VHS tape (under the title "Trigger Happy") in the late 90’s and, since then I have been more than mildly obsessed with it. Bryan is the only other person I’ve met (so far) who shares this obsession with me and we’re hoping we can inspire you to join us in our love for this film and the transcendent performances that populate it. For this episode I had the great honor of interviewing the film’s writer/director Larry Bishop. It goes long. Two and a half hours but, boy, is it worth it. In the course of sharing his insights into the writing, casting and production of the film, Bishop shares stories about Dean Martin, Kierkegaard, Marlon Brando, Albert Brooks, Timothy Carey, Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn, Schoepnehauer, Natalie Wood, Quentin Tarantino and his high school pal Richard Dreyfuss. Portlanders Roger and Martha (his current fiance) love Jeff Golblum. They’re hoping Jeff will some day visit their new, caboose-like tiny house, which Roger got up and running in just six months. Roger himself is from England. How he came to the USA is an interesting story...but so is everything else about Roger. Including his love of Jeff Goldblum. And Star Wars. And Painting. One day walking through the iconic Portland neighborhood, called Alberta, Roger was surprised to see so many tiny houses. That led to one thing, which led to another, then another until suddenly...or not so, Roger had a tiny house in his backyard. Seems to us Roger and Martha love hosting people about as much as they love Jeff. Whether those two loves might meet is anyone’s guess, but sure to be a dream come true. Something to keep in mind.
This week, the Warriors Three celebrate episode 250 of the podcast with arguments about Jeff Golblum, and a visit from friend of the show and co-host of the Wookiee Radio and Geek Watch One podcasts. Come along and celebrate with the gang. Topics discussed on this episode include: A new AR mobile game based on […]
The dynamic duo go to Asgaard, and then some other garbage planet where Jeff Golblum is in charge (I'd live there), and ultimately see Chris Hemsworth with his shirt off, and then we had to leave the theater as Krystle started cat-calling the screen, being very aggressive, leading to management asking us to exit the premises. Anyway, we talk about the part of the movie we got to see! Instagram: @imakemywifewatchmovies Twitter: @wifewatchmovies Opening and closing music by Aesop Rock.
