Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we gush (and hush) over Gwyneth Paltrow with our past, present, and future guest Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game and the ever-expanding My First Movie books! Our B-Sides today are: Flesh and Bone, Hard Eight, Hush, and Sliding Doors. The main focus revolves around her banner year of 1998. Paltrow had FIVE films released in ‘98, including Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar. We talk about her superb SNL opening monologue from 1999 (and her cameo in Ben Affleck's monologue the next year), her deep cultural resonance at the time (some credit her for bringing the color pink back into fashion), the films she made before and after Emma, and her waning movie star era after the year 2000. Of the nearly fifty films in which she has appeared, there have been precious few since 2010 that were not Marvel movies. There was, of course, Mortdecai. And, perhaps most famously, her lifestyle company Goop. There's Hush's infamous test screenings and wig-heavy reshoots (years later, Jessica Lange called the film “a piece of shit”), Sliding Doors' haircuts and soundtrack, and Flesh and Bone's slow-cooked, well-worn dramatics. Also mentioned is that amazing Patrick Doyle score for Great Expectations, The Film Stage's Holiday Gift Guide, And then there's Duets and Gwyneth's hit cover song “Cruisin'” with Huey Lewis. As he is in the news, Good Brews Bad Views decided to have the latest Patreon Poll focused around Johnny Depp, everyone's Mom's favorite weird guy. The Patrons chose Mortdecai, a movie we had no idea actually existed until we proposed to poll, in which Johnny Depp stars as a ridiculous and slightly unscrupulous mustachioed art dealer Charlie Mortdecai, with Paul Bettany in tow as his loyal and pipe laying lackey, Jock. Jump to 1:40:00 for our post movie wrap up as the podcast tries to discover who Mortdecai is for, our thoughts on very expensive beer and exclusivity, how everything is ludicrous, and that's ok.

Our "May the Farce be with You" event kicks off with a look at 2015's Mortdecai, the movie that seeks to answer the eternal question - just how many jokes can one film make about a single mustache? While star Johnny Depp had enjoyed an impressive, long-time-coming reign as one of Hollywood's biggest stars during the first decade of the 2000's, his career was clearly floundering by the time he strapped on Mortdecai's signature handlebar mustache...and the resultant critical and box-office reaction certainly didn't help matters. But could this adaptation of the cult series of British novels about an adventurous, aristocratic art dealer really be as bad as its reputation suggests? On this week's show, we look at the career of successful Hollywood screenwriter David Koepp! Koepp came to prominence in the early 1990s with his work on Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park and Brian DePalma's Carlito's Way, and most recently has finally collaborated for the first time with longtime friend Steven Soderbergh on the techno thriller Kimi, starring Zoe Kravitz in a stand-out performance. Carsten & Stephen take a look at Koepp's career, from the impressive debut thriller screenplay debut Apartment Zero up through his directorial efforts like Stir of Echoes, Premium Rush and 2020's You Should Have Left. A skilled screenwriter with deft handling of character and story (most of the time, he also made Mortdecai with Johnny Depp), Koepp's name is usually a trustworthy mark for quality entertainment on the films he works on. This week, Jeff Goldblum makes a one-scene appearance in the infamous Johnny Depp heist-comedy MORTDECAI... which means we need to talk about it. We discuss the rise and fall of Depp's career, talk about how this movie *almost* works, and prepare to open our boys. Put on your best false mustache and listen!
Providence was again stationed and waiting in the harem for Esther our lady. She showed up and was immediately singled out. Pray, what did Hegai see? What was it about her that distinguished her from the rest? Was there a way of recognizing potential? If there was, what were the parameters? All we were told was that the Esther found favor with him. Let us get our imagination to work for a moment, at least four hundred your girls were brought in before Hegai, they were all beautiful. They were all in their bloom so what was not to describe as beautiful? If they were all paraded, at some point, one would be tired of seeing beauty. At some point, they would all look the same. The point here is, there is something to say for Hegai's discerning abilities as he picked out Esther and did not end there. He separated her, put her in a special part of the harem and even gave her seven servants. How did the other girls react, we were not told but let's imagine they did and probably marked Esther from then on? To have separated Esther could only mean her lessons were specially carried out. He must have devoted time to tell her about the King Ahasuerus, his personality and what was expected of the queen. He would have hinted her about the King's temper and how to handle it and may have encouraged her and given her hope that she might have a shot at the throne. May be he even told her about the deposed queen and what she did wrong. Was he able to see through Esther's fears, did she do a good job of masking them? What about the secret her cousin told her not to disclose, was there a possibility that Hegai could have guessed? Because there were so many of them in the harem, it was nearly impossible not to have cliques and all kinds of intrigues. Mortdecai warned her about comporting herself wisely, he advised her to be focused and always remember there was a reason she got to the palace in the first place. Hegai must have reinforced that as the only report we have of her life in the harem was that she sought Hegai's opinion and abided by his advice. There is no way of telling what Hegai saw in Esther that endeared him to her, we can only conclude that the hand of her God was upon her and the eunuch was discerning enough to see and work with it… Books by Anne Ajadi (Available on Amazon) Walk With Me In The Footsteps Of Jesus Heart Matters Life Matters Navigating The Night Season You Will Marry Well Strength For The Journey God's Lady In Waiting Prayer Works

A movie about a mustache the world is wrong about and what a man will do to get his wife to accept it. Directed by David Koepp. Starring Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Jeff Golblum & Olivia Munn How is the world wrong about this film? From ANDRAS: “Mortdecai” is a brilliantly acted, big budget comedy about a mustache. It's a controversial topic to some. I’ve happily watched countless films about murder and driving and jealousy and Christmas. These are subjects that are not that interesting to me but if the film is well acted and well-made like, say, “Slap Shot” (a movie about a sport I have never paid attention to) I can appreciate it. The impact of a mustache on a man’s life? That’s something I have lived. It’s a subject that moves me. The scorn heaped upon this film for its exploration of this topic is not that dissimilar from those who voice their disapproval whenever a man lay’s claim to the “sovereign ground” which is his upper lip. There are probably a thousand zombie movies. Can we have just one mustache movie? In honor of Ocean's 8 coming out, the duo is covering heist films as the subject. First up is the dullest end of the blade Mortdecai, the Johnny Depp vehicle that's less a heist film and more of a series of mustache jokes. Get it? Because he's got a mustache! Then, our heroes sit in a diner to watch the Michael Mann classic heist film Heat. It's one of Adam's favorite films... and it's the first time Thomas has seen it! Crack the safe and listen now! Margaret Bonfiglioli has lived in Oxford all her life. A few years ago, Margaret discovered that a Luis Vuitton trunk on her landing contained hundreds of family letters, most dating back to The First World War. The letters were published in book form as ‘Full of Hope and Fear- The Great War Letters of an Oxford Family’ (OUP). Here Margaret talks about the process of putting the book together with editor James Munson, her life in Oxford, and touches on late husband, Kyril, creator of the Mortdecai novels.
