Send us a textDo you remember Above the Law from 1988? Well, if you're having trouble distinguishing this movie from the long list of other Seagal films, you are not alone. We remembered we liked it, much like we liked all his films from the 90s. They were a guarantee of an hour and a half of cheesy dialogue and over the top ass kicking. Well, this movie started it all. Not only did it star Steven Seagal, but he also produced and wrote it. We can't wait.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

As music lovers, we've all had a soundtrack to our lives....it's provided to us by the radio. Maybe at this point in the 21st century, that's less of a given. Was it the internet that killed the radio star? Who can truly say, but for most of the rock era, radio has provided songs that millions of music fans would discover, sing along to, discuss with their friends, learn to play on their instrument of choice, get amorous to, get stoned to, or cherish for some personal reason. Welcome to episode 179 of Love That Album. It's been said that in the early days of rock and roll, tyranny of distance made Australian music tougher than its Northern Hemisphere counterparts. Henry Silva might have asked, “Bullshit Or Not?” What is for certain is that Australian rock musicians could often become huge in their home country, but not raise an eyebrow anywhere else (the reverse is also true, but that's a story for another episode). Author Glen Humphries has just published a terrific book called “Aussie Rock Anthems: The Stories Behind Our Biggest Hit Songs". He writes 40 essays about popular songs from the 1960s through to the first decade of the 21st century. These essays tell stories about songs that many Australians grew up with. Some became popular outside our borders, some didn't. These songs show a huge diversity – where else will you get Shadap You Face occupying the same tome as Khe Sanh? At some stage or another, these songs all meant something to the wider Australian populus, and Glen weaves fascinating tales that cover politics, sporting pride, cultural cringe, and musical invention. I was rapt to have someone to discuss these songs with me. Neither of us were fans of every one of the songs covered in the book, and inevitably, people will argue about what was left out. What's important is that these songs all have interesting backstories and are worthy of being celebrated. Tune into find which songs Glen and I absolutely detest...and those we love. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Hey there, fellow Watchers! Welcome back to another episode of the Born to Watch Podcast. This week, we took a trip down memory lane with the 1988 action flick "Above the Law," which many of us remember fondly from our teenage years. However, revisiting it now, we found that it didn't quite hold up as well as we expected. Let's dive into why this Steven Seagal debut might be better left in the past."Above the Law" was directed by Andrew Davis, who later found success with films like "The Fugitive." This movie marks the debut of Steven Seagal as Nico Toscani, a martial artist turned cop. In our youth, the film's explosive action and gritty storyline seemed groundbreaking. But watching it with fresh eyes, the cracks in its veneer are hard to ignore. The movie opens with a flashback to Nico's Vietnam history, where the CIA recruits him. This backstory is meant to give depth to his character but ends up feeling clichéd and overblown. Fast-forward to present-day Chicago, where Nico, now a police officer, stumbles upon a conspiracy involving corrupt officials and drug trafficking. The plot seemed so gripping years ago but now comes across as convoluted and lacking in real substance. One of the biggest letdowns is the film's action sequences. While Seagal's real-life martial arts skills may be considered at the time to be undeniable, the fight scenes feel repetitive and lack the excitement we remember. The choreography, once thrilling, now seems sluggish and poorly executed. The realism Seagal brought to the action genre in the late '80s has been eclipsed by more dynamic and inventive fight scenes in modern cinema.Seagal's performance as Nico Toscani also falls flat on rewatch. His stoic delivery and limited range of expressions make it hard to connect with his character. What once seemed like a cool, zen-like demeanour now feels more like wooden acting. Seagal's physical presence is still impressive, but it's not enough to carry the movie. The supporting cast, which includes Pam Grier as Nico's partner, Delores ‘ Jacks Jackson and Henry Silva as the villainous Kurt Zagon, does their best with what they're given. Grier's charisma is undeniable, but her character lacks depth and is often relegated to the sidelines. Silva's portrayal of Zagon is menacing, but his role as the rogue CIA operative is a caricature of villainy, lacking nuance. The cinematography in "Above the Law" also doesn't hold up as well as we'd hoped. Chicago's gritty, urban landscape is still a highlight, but the film's overall visual style feels dated. The practical effects and real locations, which once added a sense of realism, now seem low-budget compared to today's standards. Andrew Davis's direction, while competent, lacks the flair that would make the movie visually engaging. The soundtrack, composed by David Michael Frank, does little to elevate the film. The music, which once seemed tense and driving, now feels generic and forgettable. It neither enhances the action nor adds to the emotional weight of the scenes. One of the most disappointing aspects of revisiting "Above the Law" is its socio-political themes. The movie attempts to tackle issues of governmental corruption and abuse of power, but these themes are handled with a heavy hand and lack subtlety. What seemed like a bold commentary in our teenage years now comes across as preachy and superficial. Moreover, "Above the Law" relays a bygone era in action cinema. Steven Seagal's debut may have established him as a new kind of action star, but his style feels outdated. The film set a template that Seagal would follow in many of his future movies, but that template has not aged well. Modern audiences demand more complexity and innovation, which "Above the Law" fails to deliver. In terms of cultural impact, while the film did pave the way for a more realistic portrayal of martial arts in Western cinema, its influence has waned. The once groundbreaking portrayal of Aikido is overshadowed by more dynamic and varied martial arts depictions in contemporary films.Revisiting "Above the Law," it's clear that nostalgia can be a double-edged sword. The film, which once held a special place in our hearts, now feels like a product of its time, struggling to stay relevant in today's action landscape. It's a reminder that not all movies age gracefully, and sometimes, our memories of them are better than the reality. In conclusion, "Above the Law" might have been a thrilling ride back in the late '80s, but it doesn't hold up under the scrutiny of a modern rewatch. Its dated action, flat performances, and heavy-handed themes make it a tough sell for today's audiences. If you're a die-hard Steven Seagal fan or have a soft spot for '80s action flicks, you might still enjoy it. But for the rest of us, it's a reminder that not all cinematic memories are worth revisiting. So, fellow Watchers, if you're thinking about rewatching this one, you might want to think twice. Sometimes, it's better to let our teenage memories stay in the past. Until next time, keep watching and remember that some things are best left above the law.

Though largely, and justifiably, forgotten since its release on June 25, 1982, Hal Needham's Megaforce is a truly breathtaking experience. And we don't necessarily mean “breathtaking” in a positive way. This week, Paul, Javi and — of course — Producer Brad take one for the team and come back much changed, chafed, and itching to chat through this grand guignol of gunfire, explosions and toxic masculinity. The manly men of Megaforce may live by the slogan “Deeds not words”, but so many of those deeds are duds, and we have witty, wise words of warning! It is truly one of the most mystifying films from the summer of '82, and we watched it so you don't have to.

We've fallen behind on editing these Wasteland episodes so we're extending the Appreciation Month topic into the first couple weeks of December as well. So, we hope you don't mind a few more trips heading out into the Dystopian fueled nightmares of the Apocalypse. It's a month long celebration of all things Post-Apocalyptic so you can expect marauders, scavengers, mutants and mayhem, cool car chases, fights over water and fuel, and battles of epic proportions. Coming up next in the dystopian and action mayhem in our 5th episode is an Italian double feature of 1982's "1990; THE BRONX WARRIORS" and it's 1983 sequel "ESCAPE FROM THE BRONX" from legendary director Enzo G. Castellari (Warriors of the Wasteland, Inglorious Bastards, The Last Shark, Keoma , The Heroin Busters and dozens more!)  These films tell of the desolate future of 1990 where the Bronx has become an all out warzone ruled only by the street gangs that still inhabit the crumbling city. At the center of this mayhem is the unofficial leader of the gangs Trash (portrayed by the late Mark Gregory from the Thunder trilogy and Delta Force Commando). In supporting roles we have Fred 'The Hammer' Williamson, Vic Morrow, Henry Silva, George Eastman and many others. These two movies have to be seen to be believed. Our deep dive discussion on these Italian actioners is headed off by the duo of Cameron Scott (Post Mortem America 2021) with friend and frequent collaborator Scott Tepperman (The Cruel Summer Trilogy). Join them and buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride!    "Allow me to correct you, Mr. Clark - I'm worse than anyone."

On this week's episode, the guys are joined by Sammy from the GGTMC and Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss a big box office bomb from 1982, Megaforce. Directed by stuntman legend Hal Needham, Megaforce is best known for explosions, Barry Bostwick's hair, liberal use of ascots, and cringeworthy representation of women in the workplace. Released in a crowded market, Megaforce was quickly dropped from theaters but has since earned a cult following. Hach! In the late 80's the American action movie was reaching its zenith. The genre had produced several bona fide superstars and was bringing big money to the box office. Action movies were the perfect vehicle for unknown talent to prove themselves. An actor that audiences had never seen before could be the lead if he had the right moves, hair, and one-liners. This 80's flick, that introduced us to the pre-ponytailed Steven Seagal, surely fit the bill. So prepare for all of the 80's action movie clichés: flashbacks to Vietnam; a tough, renegade cop; political subterfuge; a revenge plot; intrusive FBI agents; CIA backstabbing and much, much more as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Comedian Danny Johnson from the "Behind the Bar" podcats discuss “Above the Law” from 1988 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The pictures in the opening credits, including the one of baby Nico, are real pictures of Steven Seagal in his youth. Henry Silva broke Steven Seagal's nose in the final fight scene. Seagal was rushed to the hospital. The next day Seagal was back at work. He stayed up all night icing it, so that he wouldn't get a black eye. After the film opened, aikido experienced a boom worldwide. Steven Seagal's Los Angeles dojo was struggling before the movie. Afterward, it sold out all its classes.
