The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
In what could possibly be the most underrated outings of the original era, this episode of Saturday Night Live is a stand out showing! Hosted by the one and only Gary Busey, accompanied by the exceptional talents of Eubie Blake and Gregory Hines as musical guests, this one maintains an "on the edge" quality throughout that is desperately needed at this point in the show's run.SNL lives up to its hype as it featuring a raw, electric energy, long well-written sketches, and extended musical performances - one which had to be recorded TWICE! In addition to trying to figure that last one out, we also attempt to pin down Gary Busey; something we learned even the good folks as Saturday Night Live were unable to do.This episode has got EVERYTHING –muck jumpers, women's problems, 50s sock hops, technical gaffes, Tony-winners tap dancing, Point Break references, talking horses, Karen Roston, and an outstanding Schiller's Reel.---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

This week on The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four offbeat cop films that have stuck with me over the years. These films can be funny, gritty, offbeat, and sometimes kind of chaotic in the best way possible. So what movies am I recommending?Running Scared (1986) – Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two wisecracking Chicago detectives. This one's got a great mix of comedy and action, and it leans into that mid-80s buddy cop energy without taking itself too seriously. Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” is on the soundtrack, which feels like a time capsule in itself.Miami Blues (1990) – Alec Baldwin in a role that's kind of hard to pin down. He plays a violent conman who ends up impersonating a cop. It's based on a Charles Willeford novel and keeps that oddball tone where you're not always sure if you're supposed to laugh or be disturbed. Fred Ward is great in it too, playing the worn-out detective trying to catch him.Freebie and the Bean (1974) – This one's messier than most cop movies, but it's intentional. Directed by Richard Rush, who also did The Stunt Man, it's full of reckless driving, dark humor, and strange tonal shifts. Alan Arkin and James Caan play the leads, and they're either chasing criminals or arguing with each other. It kind of laid the groundwork for a lot of buddy cop films that came later.Stakeout (1987) – Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez as partners on a surveillance detail that doesn't stay professional for very long. There's a good balance of suspense and comedy, and Madeleine Stowe holds her own in her first major role. It was directed by John Badham, who also did WarGames and Short Circuit, so the pacing is solid. If you're in the mood for movies where different type of cops break rules, hunt odd suspects or drive their car on the track of an elevated train, I think you will find something here you will like. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! I've been meaning to get around to this one forever and so, by god by Gumby, we finally did it. William Ham returns to fold to discuss an episode that I firmly believe might be the most underrated of the entire OG era. Few outings of the show crackle with as much southern chaos as this one and that's not entirely surprising considering, ya know, Gary, a host the show gives way to so completely that he's actually doing a double duty stint here (with Rick Danko & Paul Butterfield in tow). And then you got Eubie Blake and Gregory Hines as well? Man, this one is a fun one. So pull up a chair, fellow slop jockeys, and join us as we try to figure out just what the Hot Bone is.
This hour, we’re exploring the history of tap dance in America. Tap was first developed as a fusion of footwork styles with roots in Africa and Ireland. Over the decades, tap legends like Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Eleanor Powell, and Gregory Hines popularized the artform and brought it to the national stage. Local dancers, choreographers, and teachers join us to discuss how they are keeping the rich legacy of tap dance alive in their work today. On August 9, 2003, Gregory Hines – the legendary tap dancer, actor, and singer whose unparalleled rhythm and charismatic performances revitalized the art of tap dancing for new generations – died of liver cancer at the age of 57. Hines' passing came after a private battle with the disease, which he had kept largely out of the public eye. Though his career spanned decades, from Broadway to Hollywood, Hines' effortless style, innovation, and passion left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and on all those who were inspired by his artistry. Happy Valentine's Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared. Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams' eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010. We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don't, and the lasting effect many of Hyams' films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers. There's much talk about Hyams' ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies. Mike makes the case that 2010 is more watchable than 2001: A Space Odyssey, Conor attempts to get over how corrupt Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines are as cops in Running Scared, and Dan sings the praises of Hyams' Narrow Margin. There's extended conversation about Robert Blake, co-star of Hyams' debut Busting, an appreciation of director John Badham (specifically Blue Thunder), and a reflection on the enormity of the production of End of Days. Lechz!

Send us a textI'm splashing out four dollars for going six minute over my plan this month....you better appreciate it. Whatever your favorite six minutes may be, imagine that is where I spent all that extra scratch, just for you. On Christmas night, we went to see Nosferatu in the theater for a TMLP field trip. And although Robert Eggers had us huddled together and quaking with fear afterward in the lobby, we still had something left in the tank. Enter Running Scared, a 1986 Peter Hyams epic tale starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal. The cast is rounded out nicely by Steven Bauer, Joe Pantoliano, Dan Hedaya, Jimmy Smith and our true hero, Jonathan Gries. And there may just be a very special guest at the table to help us ring in the new year! Dropping that ball like it's hot.

This is the podcast where we dive into some of cinema's biggest box office failures and explore whether they deserve a second chance!Sadly, Listener Request Month has reached its final full moon, but don't worry—Troy and Brad are still howling with excitement for the last suggestion. Dedicated pack member Philip sank his fangs into Wolfen, a horror crime thriller often mistaken for a werewolf flick. But surprise—Wolfen is more of a police procedural than a howling night of lycanthropic mayhem. The guys sniff out why Wolfen didn't quite sink its claws into audiences, bask in the coolness of Gregory Hines, and even sink their teeth into 10 horror films they're gearing up to devour in October.Wolfen is directed by Michael Wadleigh and stars Albertt Finney, Diane Venora, Edward James Olmos, Gregory Hines and Tom Noonan. Not A Bomb has just unveiled new designs in our Merch store! Welcome to a new season of Broadway Nation — the podcast that delves deeply into the remarkable history of the Broadway musical, with a special focus on the Immigrant, Jewish, Queer, and Black Artists who invented it. My guest today is Tony Award-winning Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell. After a short break, I am excited to be back with a new season that will be jam-packed with fascinating Broadway history, including interviews with an amazing lineup of authors of some brilliant new books that take us back to the earliest days of Broadway and bring us right up to the twenty-first century — from George M. Cohan to how TikTok and the digital age have impacted the Broadway musical. Today, we start things off with a bang with a delightful conversation with Brian Stokes Mitchell, whose career spans over forty years on television, films, recordings, concert appearances, and, most notably for our purposes, ten Broadway shows. He made his Broadway debut in 1988 in a short-lived musical called Mail, and in 1990, he was cast as the lead in David Merrick's revival of the 1926 Gershwin musical Oh, Kay! He next went on to two very high-profile gigs — first replacing Gregory Hines in Jelly's Last Jam and then Anthony Crivello in Kiss Of the Spiderwoman. In 1998, his unforgettable Tony-nominated performance as Coalhouse Walker in Ragtime firmly established him as a true Broadway star, and the following year, jumping from musical drama to musical comedy, he won the Tony Award for his performance in Kiss Me Kate. His performance in August Wilson's play, King Hedley II, in 2001 earned another Tony nomination, and the next year, he took on the title role in Man Of La Mancha. His most recent Broadway appearance was in 2016 in George Woolf's behind-the-scenes look at Shuffle Along, but as you will hear, Brian Stokes Mitchell may be back on Broadway very soon in a new musical that he is very excited about. In addition, our conversation today ranges from two tear-inducing new video performances that he has recently been involved in creating and performing: a Ted Talk with Leer deBessonet, which you can find at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZNhuRIGQZs and "Hope" with Jason Robert Brown, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJkqV2xwars. Also, his work with The Entertainment Fund and the soon-to-be-released video capture of their reunion concert of Ragtime, as well as a peek inside his process and approach to interpreting a song. Top Five Buddy Cop Movies In this episode, Kris McPeak and Annie Pruitt discuss their favorite buddy cop movies. They delve into the comedic and dramatic chemistry between pairs like Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in 'The Heat,' Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines in 'Running Scared,' and Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in 'Bad Boys.' Are any of these your favorites, by chance? The hosts provide insights into why certain movies made their lists and the dynamics that make these films memorable. With a mix of humor and nostalgia, Kris and Annie celebrate the buddy cop genre, eventually crowning the 'Lethal Weapon' series as the standout - well, they are sisters after all. They also add an interesting twist by including movies where the 'buddy' isn't a typical cop, such as 'Turner & Hooch' and 'K9.' Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where we dive into some classic films you might want to add to your watchlist. This week, I am focusing on two sports, one dance and a coming-of-age story with a side of sports from the late '70s and '80s. I've picked out four films that capture the character with determination, who try to succeed despite the against them.Breaking Away (1979)This charming film follows a group of friends in Bloomington, Indiana, who are trying to find their place in the world after high school. The story centers around Dave, a young man obsessed with Italian cycling. What makes "Breaking Away" stand out is its authentic portrayal of friendship and the tension between townies and college kids. It artfully crafted, and the film won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.Vision Quest (1985)"Vision Quest" is a story about a high school wrestler named Louden Swain, who is determined to drop two weight classes to take on the best wrestler in the state. This film is a great blend of sports action and personal growth. Look out for a young Madonna performing "Crazy for You" in one of her early film appearances. It's a testament to the lengths one will go to achieve their goals.Lucas (1986)This heartwarming film tells the story of Lucas, a small, nerdy kid with a big heart, navigating the complexities of high school life. Corey Haim delivers a memorable performance (my favorite of his), and the film features early roles for Winona Ryder and Charlie Sheen. "Lucas" tackles themes of acceptance, friendship, and the pain of unrequited love. It's a near-genuine portrayal of the highs and lows of adolescence. Listen to the commercial I play in the show, it's very misleading.Tap (1989)"Tap" showcases the incredible talent of Gregory Hines as Max, a former tap dancer turned burglar trying to reclaim his passion for dance. The film beautifully blends the art of tap dancing with a compelling storyline about redemption and the pursuit of one's true calling. The dance scenes are a highlight, featuring legendary tap dancers like Sammy Davis Jr. It's a must-watch for fans of dance. These four films offer a mix of people on different paths, but each one provides a unique perspective on the struggles and triumphs of determined people. I hope you enjoy these recommendations and find some new favorites to revisit. George Schlatter is living a life full of legendary firsts and remarkable adventures because he embraces innovation. George's captivating career path is documented in his book, Still Laughing: A Life In Comedy. It's a hilarious page-turner that serves as a showbiz primer and history lesson. It's also self-improvement manual for anyone in search of creative inspiration. One of George's key mottos is: When all hope is fading, make them laugh. George has brazenly cracked up Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Cary Grant. Now it's your turn.George takes us backstage with Lucille Ball, Judy and Liza, Sammy Davis Jr. Stevie Wonder, Cher and the cast of Laugh-In. He tells us how he talked Lucy into riding an elephant with Steve Lawrence through Shubert Alley. He shares his secret network executive management technique: Get them drunk at lunch. And he offers astutely passionate observations about the current state of television and how it's changed since the turbulently transformative sixties.George believes that rules are guidelines that should be courageously challenged. On a bet from Jack Lemmon, George sneaked a naughty phrase into an episode of Laugh-In, winning Jack as a guest star on the show. He pioneered the airing of bloopers and outtakes. He invented the Las Vegas lounge act and created reality TV with Real People which shared the true stories of the Navajo Code Talkers, The Tuskegee Airmen and the Viet Nam War's missing in action. We also challenge George to a round of People You've Worked With Roulette, talk about his once-lost show, Turn-On, which was cancelled 20 minutes into its first hour. We've made a few jokes in past episodes about Michael McDonald popping up in unexpected places. It's an easy joke to make, because McDonald has a distinctive voice and has worked with a lot of artists covering numerous genres. But the man is talented - both vocally and on the keyboards - and his career has put him at the forefront of rock music for a long time.Sweet Freedom is a compilation album that explores McDonald's work from his first two albums plus a number of collaborations. The album title is taken from the track he had recently completed for the motion picture soundtrack “Running Scared,” a buddy cop comedy starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. After a troubled youth, McDonald began his music career in earnest as a vocalist and keyboardist for Steely Dan. After that he was tapped as keyboardist and vocalist for The Doobie Brothers, a position which would eventually lead to his fronting the band and turning it in a more soulful direction. In 1982 he started a solo career which would combine a soft rock style with his signature “blue eyed soul” sensibilities.Lynch is examining this “greatest hits” album with an eye towards some of the collaborations that have involved Michael McDonald, many of which are signature anthems and ballads of the early 80's soulful catalog that will eventually become known as yacht rock.We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast! Sweet FreedomRod Temperton, known for his work with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, composed this single. It is a bit of a departure from McDonald's typical style with its upbeat melody and horns. It went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and of course became the title track for this compilation album.Yah Mo B ThereThis song is a collaboration with the late James Ingram which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written and produced by Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton, the song was originally a more contemporary Christian song with the title "Yahweh Be There." Ingram suggested the title change, opening up the lyrics to more ambiguity to fit a wider audience. On My OwnA number 1 song from the Billboard charts in the US, this track finds McDonald paired with Patti LaBelle on a breakup duet. Interestingly, the two recorded their tracks completely separately, and did not actually meet until they performed the song together on The Tonight Show in 1986.I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)This song peaked at number 4, and was McDonald's first success as a solo artist. It was a cover originally sung by Chuck Jackson in 1962. McDonald's version features his sister Maureen providing backup vocals, adding familial harmony to the mix. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme to the television game show “Card Sharks”This game show originally ran on NBC from 1978 to 1981, and returned for a second iteration to CBS in 1986. STAFF PICKS:Too Late by AsiaRob leads off the staff picks this week with a track from Asia's third album, “Astra.” John Wetton returned to the group after a brief separation in late 1983 when he was replaced by Greg Lake for tour dates. Steve Howe is replaced by Mandy Meyer for this third Asia album.Goodbye by Night RangerBruce brings us the last top 40 hit (to date) by Night Ranger. Drummer Kelly Keagy takes lead vocals on this Brian Blades-composed power ballad written after losing his brother to a drug overdose. “It's hard living life on this memory go-round.”Walk Like An Egyptian by The BanglesWayne's staff pick is the best known song by the group. Songwriter Liam Sternberg took inspiration for this song from a rough trip across the English Channel, when his fellow passengers were walking carefully with their arms outstretched due to the choppy waters. It would become a number 1 single, and Billboard's number 1 song in 1987.These Dreams by HeartLynch closes out the staff picks with as song that emerged from a collaboration between Bernie Taupin and Martin Page. Taupin originally envisioned it as a song for Stevie Nicks, but after she turned it down, the song was restructured for Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Nancy Wilson takes lead on this song dedicated to her friend Sharon Hess, who had lost her battle with leukemia. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Shade Gate by HawkwindThis instrumental appears on Hawkwind's fourteeneth studio album, which was inspired by the works of fantasy novelist Michael Moorcock. With his signature voice and charismatic presence, legendary actor Keith David has starred in almost 400 projects, including film, television, stage and interactive media. From devils to angels, David has played just about every kind of role you can think of – including voice work in Disney and Manga animation, to roles in classic horror and comedy, to small time crooks and mega-church preachers. His acting range is incomparable, and as a classically trained actor, he's a firm believer that talent alone is not enough – you must put in the hard work and training to be successful. That's why he's won three Emmys, an NAACP Image Award, as well as being nominated for a Tony Award. But how has he remained passionate about acting for so many years, while delivering grace and splendor to each character he portrays? Join us as I SEE U's Eddie Robinson chats with one of Hollywood's most sought-after performers, Keith David. The Harlem-born veteran actor shares family stories and insight into his very first movie role—the 1982 horror classic, The Thing. He also reminisces about his relationship with the church, and how he had considered becoming a minister at one point in his career. He channeled that love of ministry into his character, Bishop James Greenleaf, for a powerful performance in the Oprah-produced drama series, Greenleaf. David shows no sign of slowing down as he reveals to I SEE U the secret to his remarkable longevity as a successful actor in a competitive and ever-evolving entertainment industry.

This week we have a look at the 1981 film Wolfen. This is Episode #427! Wolfen is a 1981 American crime horror film directed by Michael Wadleigh in his only directional feature film, based on Whitley Strieber's 1978 novel The Wolfen. It stars Albert Finney, Diane Venora, Gregory Hines and Edward James Olmos. The film follows a city cop who has been assigned to uncover what is behind a series of vicious murders. Originally, it is believed the murders are animal attacks until the cop discovers an indigenous legend about wolf spirits.

The buddy cop action-comedy movie hit its heyday by the end of the 1980s with genre-defining box office winners like "48 Hrs." and "Lethal Weapon." The formula is pretty straightforward - two wise-cracking detectives, who share almost nothing in common, team up and face a barrage of messy violent drama before coming together to fight the bad guys and save the day. This formula has proven to be effective, resulting in a lot of success, with occasional bright spots in the modern era. In 1986, a year before "Lethal Weapon" changed the game, director Peter Hyams directed this 80s flick starring two up-and-coming actors of the day, dancer Gregory Hines, and comedian Billy Crystal. Although the film didn't make any significant impact on cinema and has become largely forgotten, it remains a quality example of the genre and an entertaining film with a solid story and a memorable cast. So jump in the spray-painted unmarked police car, don't lose your pants, and crank up Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Gerry D from "Totally Rad Christmas" Podcast and Nicholas Pepin from "Pop Culture Roulette" Podcast I discuss “Running Scared” from 1986 on this special replay episode of the 80's Flick Flashback podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Ray and Danny were targeted by two muggers, it was obvious that the thugs were not experienced in their field. If you closely observe the tall thug in the black leather jacket, you will notice that his "pistol" was actually made up of a piece of wood with a metal rod that was kept in place by electrical tape. After returning from Florida, Ray wears a Tampa Bay Buccaneers hat. At the time the movie was filmed, the Buccaneers and Chicago Bears were division rivals. In an effort to bring him down, they unintentionally blow the lid off a long-running undercover operation which has been trying to crack his drug ring. After getting reprimanded by their captain, they are forced to take a "vacation" and spend some time away from the force. To get away from the dreary Chicago winter, they go to Key West, Florida. There they are taken in by the life of leisure, natural beauty, and gorgeous beauties. They love the pace of life in a place where people stop and take time to watch the sunset each day. Danny comes up with the idea to retire from the force and buy a bar there, and gets Ray to go along with the idea. Still, they don't feel right about retiring until they can nail Julio. They head back to Chicago for one last mission as part of the force so that they can retire with clear consciences. They are aiming for one final shot at Julio, one final showdown where they can bring him down.Billy Crystal? Check. Gregory Hines? Yep. Jimmy Smits? Heck yeah! So grab your badge, throw your pants down a flight of stairs, and take a vacation to this episode on “Running Scared!” 80's Flick FlashbackFB: @80's Flick Flashback podcastTwitter: @80_podcastIG: @80sflickflashbackPop Culture RouletteFB: @PopCultureRouletteTwitter: @popcultrouletteIG: @popcultrouletteCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! EPISODE #969 PSYCHIC SLOAN BELLA ON THE NEW WORLD ORDER Richard welcomes Hollywood psychic/medium Sloan Bella to discuss the investigation into her son's fatal mysterious motorcycle accident and her views on Satanic cults in Hollywood and the plans of the Illuminati and their dystopian New World Order. GUEST: Sloan Bella was born with psychic-mediumship abilities. By the age of four Sloan learned to articulate nightly visits by other worldly beings, "aliens," and the spirits of those people who had crossed over. These communications went on throughout her childhood. This was how she began to develop her ability to act as a conduit and to speak the different frequencies that exist around us. Astrology was introduced to Sloan via a charm necklace from a cousin in England and, by age seven, her lifelong passion for astrology began. By seventeen, Sloan was established as a professional psychic-medium, while deeply entrenched in the street, music vibe, while reading for everyone from Gregory Hines to Don Adams, as well as a large clientele which included street kids and runaways, teachers, musicians, businessmen, actors, strippers, Congressmen, housewives, athletes, and anyone who needed help. Sloan's abilities at one point were even sought after by the head of a major crime family. Sloan was always connected to the other side and one of the most unusual connections was her Mediumship communication with the late Jimi Hendrix, who guided her and aided her work on the streets of Toronto and Hollywood, as a "street psychic" with intuitive guidance to runaway and sexually-exploited children. To this day, Sloan is still reading for people from every walk of life, and for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musicians who have relied on her medical intuitiveness along with intuitive guidance in every area of their lives. Sloan is a published author and former newspaper stringer writer on metaphysics. WEBSITE/LINK: https://sloanbella.com https://www.youtube.com/@SloanBella SUPPORT MY SPONSORS!!!
