It is with heavy hearts that we have to push back our release schedule one week. Actually, no, our hearts are light and full of joy. A new baby has been added to House Stokes in the form of past guest Elliott (from the Home Alone 2 episode) and his lovely wife having a baby. Said baby was just very inconsiderate in arriving at precisely the time we were set to record our Fast Five episode. So, it'll be here in a week. All will be well. In the meantime, we're flashing back to last summer when it was the Summer of Spielberg, and we're giving you one of our most popular episodes, the Jurassic Park episode featuring AJ and Kristie from the In Love With Horror podcast. The Summer of Spielberg continues as Laci and Matt were able to buckle their seatbelts in time for their helicopter to land on Isla Nublar, where they meet up with AJ & Kristie from the In Love With Horror podcast to talk about Jurassic Park (1993). The four team up for a rollicking podcast so good it'll have you shouting “Hello John!” at total strangers. First of all, this famous action/horror/sci-fi/disaster epic has like 50 incredible lines of dialogue! So we just spend some time saying these lines at each other. But eventually we get into it, talking about the history of Michael Crichton's novel and its adaptation by Steven Spielberg. Then we take a close look at the movie, wondering just how bad of a boss John Hammond must be and what exactly is the nature of his relationship with Ian Malcolm. Also, apparently John Hammond was originally intended to sing a song explaining how Jurassic Park works? Instead they did the Mr. DNA thing, but we would love to hear that song. Who knows... maybe we will. Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, Jurassic World: Rebirth is the science fiction thriller film which serves as a standalone sequel to Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), the fourth Jurassic World film, and the seventh installment overall in the Jurassic Park franchise Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet's ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) leads a team of skilled operatives to the most dangerous place on Earth whose paths cross with a vacationing family. We break down all things from rehashed plot points, the witheringly love of the prehistoric, to dinosaurs and mutations big and small.

Here we go again! The seventh film in the Jurassic franchise - Jurassic World Rebirth - is now in theaters worldwide. This is the first time since The Lost World that David Koepp has returned to write the screenplay for, but this time it's not an adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel. I had hope since that original announcement and the hiring of Gareth Edwards as the director certainly had me yearning to finally see a good Jurassic film in theaters again. For context, the original Jurassic Park is easily one of my favorite movies ever made; I think it is, in every measurable way, a perfect summer blockbuster. That being said, I don't think any of the Jurassic Park/World sequels have ever been fully satisfying. There are a lot of fans of The Lost World. I am not one of them. There are some staunch defenders of Jurassic Park III, and I am certainly not one of those either. I can have some guilty pleasure fun with the first Jurassic World, but the two films that followed were dull and disappointing. I was one of the few who was able to build up some legitimate hype for Rebirth, because I like the cast and creative team. Is it, by far, the best Jurassic sequel... even if that doesn't mean much? In this chilling and cinematic episode, we sit down with legendary screenwriter and director David Koepp—the mind behind iconic films like Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Panic Room—to talk about his foray into immersive audio storytelling with the Audible Original horror drama, Yard Work. Koepp shares the eerie inspiration behind the story, which follows a grieving widower and former surgeon—played by the one and only Kevin Bacon—as he confronts strange and increasingly malevolent overgrowth creeping into his remote property. We explore Koepp's transition from screen to sound, the unique constraints and creative freedoms of audio horror, and how he builds suspense using only the power of voice, sound design, and imagination.

Frequent Steven Spielberg collaborator David Koepp is our guest this week. Koepp is the screenwriter behind Jurassic Park, The Lost World, War of the Worlds, and Spielberg's upcoming UFO/UAP flick as well as the director of the criminally underrated Stir of Echoes. Koepp also penned the script for the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, which hits cinemas July 2nd. We talk about his work in the Jurassic realm, the Spielberg phone call that got him back into the franchise for the new movie, and the childhood inspirations that fed into some of the new film's biggest and most thrilling set pieces. We also talk about his other work with Spielberg, going back to adapting the very first Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton's original book and even a little about breaking into the industry with the B-movie classic I Come In Peace (aka Dark Angel). BLACK BAG, Steven Soderbergh's latest 90-minute collaboration with writer David Koepp, is in theory a sprawling international spy thriller, but in practice it's a more intimate study of how a marriage can thrive in an environment where trusting your spouse is considered a weakness. This week we talk about how that genre disconnect works for and against BLACK BAG, before bringing in this pairing's companion film, 1934's THE THIN MAN, to compare how Nick and Nora Charles's bantering, crime-solving partnership compares to the cooler, less boozy charms of Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender's married spies. Then for Your Next Picture Show, we reach back to one of this podcast's very first episodes to cannibalize a recommendation for a film that we've already covered on the show, but was too clear an inspiration on BLACK BAG to ignore. (And really, is there ever a bad time to recommend WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?) This week we have a pair of thrillers about guys who meet a “New Friend from Hell” and pay the consequences. Explore the dark side with BAD INFLUENCE (1990) from writer David Koepp and director Curtis Hanson, starring James Spader and Rob Lowe. Then it's time to get way to close to the creepy new neighbors in CONSENTING ADULTS (1992) starring Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Kevin Space, and Rebecca Miller.
This week on the show, Jeff's audio is crap, but the conversation is great! John kicks us off with a mini-review of Steven Soderbergh's “Black Bag”, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Once he gives his thoughts, we gripe about filming expenses in LA and the US as a whole and compostables before getting to our featured conversation, “Dial ‘M' For Murder”, the Alfred Hitchcock classic. Our second time visiting 1954, we give you some context by reading some film facts and trivia, American facts and trivia, and then get to the show. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. Operating in direct opposition to the never ending barrage of anonymous content being foisted on us by algorithmic goose-steppers — the film programmers of today are cultural rebels and excavationists entrusted with the sacred duty of helping you find your new favorite movie. The best ones even manage to turn it into an art. And Jim Healy —director of programming for the Cinematheque at the University of Madison-Wisconsin— is definitely one of the best. On this episode we talk to Jim about the upcoming 2025 Wisconsin Film Festival, 16mm, The Clash on “Fridays”, Argentinean noir, David Koepp and “Apartment Zero”, George & Linda Eastman, Steve Buscemi, Richard Widmark, working with Ben, Jim's brother Pat, “Conan The Barbarian”, the filthy mouth of Groucho Marx, and we pick the best movies about movies. Oh, yeah. It's about to get real nerdy up in here. Gabe's gonna have to wait.
The Cinematic Schematic podcast hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman are joined by GoodTrash Media's Dalton Stuart to review the new spy thriller from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp, Black Back. The post ‘Black Bag' Is Soderbergh's Stylish Return to Espionage – The Cinematic Schematic appeared first on The Cinematropolis.
Director Steven Soderbergh has given us some incredibly fun (and well-made) films over the past few decades. Everything from OCEAN'S ELEVEN to ERIN BROCKOVICH to TRAFFIC to MAGIC MIKE, Soderbergh's routine leaves audiences cheering in one fashion or another, with BLACK BAG, that holds true. With an incredible cast of Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Marisa Abela, Tom Burke, Naomie Harris and Regé-Jean Page, Soderbergh and writer David Koepp create a soon-to-be classic spy thriller. So let's talk about it...

Written by David Koepp and set within the British world of spies where trust is scarce, the film is a sexy, slick, stylish thriller where the words are the action, and the relationships at home and at work matter. This Friday is so jam-packed with new movies that we wanted to review a couple of them early for you here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the action comedy "Novocaine," starring Jack Quaid as a mild-mannered bank manager who feels no pain. When robbers kidnap the woman he adores (Amber Midthunder), he finds his affliction is actually an asset. One of us liked this movie better than the other. But we both loved "Black Bag," starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as British spies who love each other but don't totally trust each other. This is the second film this year from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp, following "Presence" in January. It's sleek, sexy and stylish. This is a spoiler-free review. Join us Friday for reviews of "The Electric State" on Netflix and the indie drama "Opus." We look forward to seeing you then. In this spoiler-free instant take, Will Ashton jumps on the mic solo to give you his first impressions of Black Bag, the sleek and sizzling new spy thriller from director Steven Soderbergh. With a star-studded cast led by Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, Black Bag is a taut, high-style espionage caper that calls back to the classy, grown-up thrillers of yesteryear. Will dives into what makes this film click.Iits sophisticated style, whip-smart screenplay (co-written by Soderbergh collaborator David Koepp), and a third act that actually sticks the landing. He compares it to classics like Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Out of Sight, highlighting how Soderbergh leans into his signature charm, sexiness, and cinematic craftsmanship. Other stars include Naomi Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, and Marisa Abela. All of whom get their moment to shine. Will also touches on Fassbender’s continued hot streak post-The Killer. Plus, why Blanchett is perfectly matched for this kind of layered, stylish fare. Clocking in at a brisk 95 minutes, Black Bag is a sharp and satisfying return to form. It's equally suited for a theater outing or a high-quality night in. Listen in for Will’s take on where Black Bag ranks among Soderbergh’s post-retirement filmography. And why this might be one of his most entertaining efforts in years. Send us a textDEATH BECOMES HER (1992)For the second episode in TGTPTU's Season 14 redux series, the film choice was Thomas's. As he explains at the top of the ep, he wanted to do a Streep rewatch with recent co-host Ryan, specifically and especially a comedy. His first choice of Adaptation got nixed as it had previously been covered twice, first during the Cage and then again in the Streep season. So paired with the previous episode's High Plains Driver, this week TGTPTU (re)presents SHE-DEVIL (1986), the laugh-out-loud revenge story featuring Roseanne Barr as— Oh, apologies. We just lost half of our hosts and all of our listeners. Okay, let's try again. For the second in our Season 14 redux series, the choice is Thomas's and I guess we'll go with DEATH BECOMES HER (1992), originally recorded in 2023 as Season 8, Episode 12. And although during that Streeps of Fire season surprise special guests and Jack recorded an excellent episode in all but audio quality, none of the three current hosts (Ken, Thomas, or Ryan) were on to talk Robert Zemeckis's special effects comedy starring the co-billed Streep, Hawn, and Willis. So grabs some fresh takes on the film (e.g., Death Becomes Her structured a TV dinner) as Ken beefs with writer David Koepp; Ryan with Zemeckis; Thomas with olds telling youngs how to spend money on food; and Jack with the ghost of Maggie Thatcher. Thomas also puts Jack on blast for not watching films he mentioned going to watch during the original episode's recording while, don't worry, She-Devil receives plenty of mentions throughout. And if that's not enough ep for you ingrates, cohost throughout Season 8 and the voice singing the first three seasons' intro songs, the illustrious and always opinionated Andi drops in briefly to say some unkind words of demotivation to the boys. Stay flaccid, y'all. Ep. 290: Steven Soderbergh on Presence, shooting in the first-person, and recent viewing Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Steven Soderbergh's first-person ghost thriller Presence opens today in theaters—almost exactly one year after its premiere screening at Sundance, where I first saw it. I sat down with Soderbergh and asked him about directing and shooting the film, which entailed essentially embodying the character of the haunting presence as we move through a house of family and view their goings-on from a supernatural POV. He also shared his mother's crucial influence on the film; how he built up both suspense and a grounded family drama; and an early change during filming that affected how he would film the presence. Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, and Callina Liang co-star; Soderbergh re-teams with screenwriter David Koepp. Finally, we talk about some of his recent viewing—which the director famously chronicles on his website. Here he explains, among other things, why he's watching so much Star Wars, and also pays tribute to the dearly departed David Lynch.
