Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures. Company Company Up: This week's company coming up is called Bottle. Co-Founders, Andy Blechman and Will Schreiber have an obsession with solving the pains of local businesses to serve their customers and improve operations. How do they do it? Bottle makes it dead simple for a local vendor to launch a store, communicate with customers, and sell flexible subscriptions all in one place. Customers who use Bottle have a very simple and beautiful way to showcase their products, text and email customers, and batch the orders with suppliers so greater margins are achieved. Ideal customers range from bakers, to florists, to butchers. They launched this product approximately two years ago and customer satisfaction is off the star chart scale. They are currently hiring for sales reps and more. Check them out and keep an eye on their growth! Announcement of the Week: Hypepotamus ran a great article on Christy Brown who just took over the CEO role of Dr. Noze Best. I'm excited about this for several reasons: first, we are happy customers and can't say enough good things about the product. Second, this company was started by an Emory Pediatric Otolaryngologist, Dr. Steve Goudy. This local, direct to consumer company helps suction the ever-present congestion out of babies and infants. This is a great example of commercialization in the healthcare space on the consumer side. It takes significant, fun work to even get a prototype out there, particularly while being a practicing doctor, nonetheless. Congrats to the Dr. Noze Best team on the next major chapter of the business. I'm very excited to see this grow and scale.     Real Real Estate: There's been tremendous coverage on the MailChimp move from Ponce City Market into their new building in the Biz Chron but when it comes to real estate I've found it more interesting to get the take from the folks who make the decision. This is why when MailChimp Co-Founder, Dan Kurzius wrote a descriptive LinkedIn post on the decision making process, where they are going and why I was intrigued. The synopsis is they are moving 10 minutes down the Beltline in Jim Irwin's New City Development. There are three major towers in the development and MailChimp is taking one entire tower and three floors in another tower connected by a sky bridge. In addition to more details about the building itself and the interior designers, Dan includes several images and videos of the new spread. There is a new sheriff in town among the office portfolio on the East Side Trail of the Beltline; the activity and excitement around that area will be even more energizing! No specific date on the move but they are in the test fit phase today.   Beta Products of the Week: Okay, this product isn't even in beta yet, it is still being built and is pre-launch, but nonetheless, we're going to cover it this week as their launch is imminent. The name of the company is called Gatsby and it's founded by Alice Thacker. She is solving the pain point of getting several folks to coordinate schedules while keeping communication simple. How many times have you been on a group thread looking to organize a dinner or gathering, yet a busy recipient and a two-day later response and suddenly you lose all potential fixity. I'm intrigued in this market because I believe Gatsby can disrupt Doodle. I remember using Doodle 25 years ago in 8th grade…and we still use it today! Add to the fact the natural viral coefficient opportunity here and there could be some serious magic. As mentioned, the product is not out but sign up for the waitlist if you're interested in being the first in the know.  Lastly, one of the busiest weeks is on the horizon which is October 17th-October 21st. Techstars Demo Day to Venture Atlanta amongst several other events, happy hours, and more are sprinkled throughout the week. Lock in your plans now!     Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word!  Resources discussed in this episode: Announcement of the Week:  Christy Brown Becomes CEO of Dr. Noze Best Company Coming Up:  Bottle Real Real Estate:  MailChimp Real Estate Update Beta Product of the Week: Gatsby

With new hardware including an orbiting observatory platform on the Command Service Module, the first lunar rover, and an upgraded, lunar module, Astronauts Dave Scott and Jim Irwin were able to geologically explore the mountains of the Moon at the Hadley-Apennine landing site that featured 14,000 high peaks and a spectacular canyon: Hadley Rille.

The Apennine Mountains are the tallest on the Moon. They top out at almost three miles above the surrounding plains. And for Apollo 15 astronauts Dave Scott and Jim Irwin, who landed at the base of the Apennines 50 years ago today, they offered quite a view. SCOTT: Oh, look at the mountains today, Jim, when they're all sunlit — isn't that beautiful? IRWIN: It really is. SCOTT: By golly, that's just super. It's, you know, unreal! The mountains represented some of the Moon's earliest crust. And another nearby landmark — a canyon known as Hadley Rille — contained evidence of fairly recent volcanic activity. Scott and Irwin bagged about 170 pounds of rocks and dirt. And they covered a lot of ground — about 17 miles — in the first lunar rover. SCOTT: This is really a rockin', rollin' ride, isn't it? I've never been on a ride like this before. Oh, boy. I'm glad they've got this great suspension system on this thing. Scott and Irwin spent three days on the Moon. Then they rejoined crewmate Al Worden, who'd been operating a set of Moon-watching cameras from orbit. During the trip home, Worden took the first “walk” in deep space to retrieve the film. Before they left orbit, though, the astronauts achieved one more “first”: They ejected a small satellite to observe the environment around the Moon. APOLLO 15: 3, 2, 1, launch. ... Tallyho! The crew of Apollo 15 had a spectacular view. The astronauts landed at the edge of a deep canyon, near the base of some of the tallest mountains on the Moon. For scientists, the site offered a chance to study several eras of lunar geology. Dave Scott, Jim Irwin, and Al Worden headed for the Moon on July 26th, 1971. LAUNCH CONTROL: 4, 3, 2, 1, all engines running. Launch commit. Liftoff! We have liftoff ... They entered lunar orbit 50 years ago today, aboard their command module, Endeavour. APOLLO 15: Hello, Houston, the Endeavour is on station with cargo, and what a fantastic sight. CAPCOM: Beautiful news! Romantic, isn't it? The next day, Scott and Irwin boarded the lunar module, Falcon, and headed for the surface. FALCON: Eight feet, minus one. Contact! Man! Okay, Houston, Falcon is on the plain at Hadley. CAPCOM: Roger roger, Falcon. The site was ringed by the Apennine Mountains, which are almost three miles high. They formed when an asteroid slammed into the Moon four billion years ago. Shockwaves piled up layers of rock. So geologists hoped the base of the mountains might offer samples of the Moon's early crust. The site also offered details on the impact. Falcon landed at the edge of Hadley Rille, a canyon a mile wide and a quarter of a mile deep. It probably formed when a lava tube collapsed. So it offered a chance to study recent volcanic activity — at one of the most spectacular sites on the Moon. More tomorrow.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Anyone who has ever looked at the stars on a dark night has, at times, been awe-struck by their vastness and the greatness of space, yet only twelve men in history have been privileged to stand on the moon and look back towards the blue planet, as Earth has been described.  Standing on the surface of the moon, the Earth is some 229,000 plus miles away, and, according to Jim Irwin, one of those 12 who saw it from that perspective, the Earth appears to be the size of a walnut.

In our lives, we often are influenced by two things, the books we read and the people we meet. Those two things set us off in a new directions. We always have that influential person or a few in our lives that are so influential that they take us in a new direction. For Bob Cornuke, that person was Jim Irwin who had been to the moon and back and had a cathartic moment while seeing the earth from space. Their first of many expeditions started with the search for Noah’s Ark. More expeditions followed and eventually, it led him to write books. Storytelling, Bob shares, is a skill set that he’s never tapped into as a young man. He likes to encourage people to take advantage of every season of their lives and try to find those things they have buried deep inside of them. The only way of finding and tapping buried skill sets is challenging yourself and going out on a limb sometimes. For Bob, it was writing, and now he’s doing it as a profession. Watch the episode: Listen to the podcast: Tapping Buried Skill Sets: Living The Life You Were Truly Meant To Live with Bob Cornuke We have something a little unusual. I’m sitting in the living room of (http://www.baseinstitute.org/) . Bob, it’s a lovely day in Colorado. Thanks for the hospitality. Thanks for having me on your podcast. We’re sitting in the living room. I have a buffalo head behind me with a Sharps ‘52 carried by one of Bob’s family members or built by Bob’s family members. Actually, I’m the great, great grandson of Christian Sharps. If you saw Quigley Down Under, that’s a Sharp rifle, a true grit. I am the great, great grandson of Christian Sharps. I’ll make sure I behave. Behave yourself. We’re sitting here, we have this beautiful day. We’re overlooking a pond and part of a golf course. I’m going to take in, go off-grid, and let you explore and talk to some of the folks about what it is that you do and what gets you going down this path. It’s certainly not a place I’d ever expect to go to in my life. Early on, I received a football scholarship at Fresno State early on, and then had a real desire to be in law enforcement. After college, I got involved with the Costa Mesa Police Department. I was about ten years on the department and an FBI-trained homicide investigator for the department. Then I got in a bad shoot out and the man died. I came out here to Colorado and was doing some fly fishing with my brother, Paul Cornuke, and he was an air traffic controller out here. I fell in love with Colorado immediately. From LA and Orange County and the traffic, and especially after the shooting, I said, “I’ve had a nice experience in law enforcement and I’m seeing all the older guys straining to retirement, not liking the job, and complaining about everything.” I didn’t want to be that. I thought it was a good time to step away from law enforcement and try some new challenges in life. I came out to Colorado and I got involved with real estate development and within a few years I had 125 employees in three offices and made partnership with my brother Paul. He left air traffic control. To date, he’s very successful in real estate. He has 1,900 employees now in Florida. He’s doing quite well. We got into real estate, did well together, a good partnership, and meshed really well, but during that process, I met a man named Jim Irwin, who is the eighth man to walk on the moon, the first one to drive the car on the moon. In our lives, we often are influenced by two things. The two main things are the books we read and the people we meet. Those two things set us off in a new direction, and we always have that influential person or a few in our lives that are so influential that they take this in a new direction. Jim had been to the moon and when he came back, he had a real desire to go find lost locations in the Bible of all things. He
