What does it take for liberty to emerge and to flourish? Daron Acemoglu will explain how, from antiquity to the modern age, the strong have tended to dominate the weak because states are too strong and despotic or because violence and lawlessness arise in their absence. Achieving liberty requires a constant struggle between the state and society that strikes a balance between the elite and citizens, and between institutions and norms. Acemoglu will draw from history to discuss how and under what conditions societies have gained freedoms, maintained them, or lost them. John Nye will critique Acemoglu’s views on the emergence and continuance of liberty. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Is John Nye the finest polymath in the George Mason economics department? Raised in the Philippines and taught to be a well-rounded Catholic gentleman, John Nye learned the importance of a rigorous education from a young age. Indeed, according to Tyler he may very well be the best educated among his colleagues, having studied physics and literature as an undergraduate before earning a master’s and PhD in economics. And his education continues, as he’s now hard at work mastering his fourth language.  On this episode of Conversations with Tyler, Nye explains why it took longer for the French to urbanize than the British, the origins of the myth of free-trade Britain, why Vertigo is one of the greatest movies of all time, why John Stuart Mill is overrated, raising kids in a bilingual household, and much more.  Transcript and links Follow John on Twitter Follow Tyler on Twitter More CWT goodness: Facebook Twitter Instagram Email

John Nye (@EndisNye_com) is the VP of Cybersecurity Strategy at healthcare consultancy #CynergisTek. He's in the process of writing a whitepaper about the issues that are still plaguing healthcare. While every industry in the world has to deal with #security issues, the stakes are highest, and most personal, in healthcare. Because healthcare data is highly sensitive, a breach can cause major problems for the individual and #healthcare organization — in addition to embarrassment and sometimes extortion or blackmail.   We go over some of the things he's found, and discuss how we could address these issues.   Ms. Berlin's course "Disrupting the Kill Chain" is planned to start on the 5th of February, and will be 4 sessions, with new material if you've seen her workshop at previous conferences.  The cost of the class will be $100 USD for access to our Zoom webex. If you'd like to gain access to the videos we'll have for the class, you can buy access to them for $50 USD. John Nye of George Mason University talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the Great Depression, the evolution of the State, and attitudes people have toward free markets. Nye argues that support for modern capitalism is fragile because people have trouble trusting the market process which is based on anonymous exchange with strangers. So when a crisis comes, it leads to demands for a larger role for top-down decision making. Nye sees the Great Depression as part of a larger public disillusionment beginning in World War I.

John Nye of George Mason University talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about his book, War, Wine, and Taxes. The conversation covers the history of Britain and France's trade policy, why the British drink beer and why Ricardo's example of Britain trading wool for Portuguese wine is bizarre. Nye turns the traditional story on its head--he argues that France was more of a free trader than Britain and that the repeal of the Corn Laws was not the dividing line between Britain's protectionist past and free trade future. At the end of the discussion, Nye emphasizes the importance of domestic free trade for economic growth.
