The Irish Thalidomide Association has rejected an apology issued by the Coalition leaders last week to members who were born with birth defects in the 1950s and early 1960s. The birth defects were caused by Thalidomide a drug that expectant mothers took to alleviate morning sickness. The drug was withdrawn internationally in 1961 after it was established as the cause. However, it continued to be sold in Ireland until 1964. after their mothers took the drug Thalidomide. Treasa spoke to two members of the Irish Thalidomide Association, Jacqui Browne from Fenit and to John Stack from Tarbert.

This week we are dissecting The Dead Files “Devil's Triangle” (Season 11 Episode 9) which aired September 5, 2019. This one confused us too since the three main entities are similar and we struggled with which ghost matched which man in history! We also talked about depression, demons, syphilis and selling your soul for riches. And what happened when a cop didn't pay for his oysters. We also do a thought experiment on what it might be like to do a group project with Steve. (this is merely a joke we just expanded on, we don't really think Steve would be a slacker in a group project—in case you're listening, Steve). Megan also does her best-yet impersonation of Steve's accent. So, leave your syphilis in the drawing room, grab your beverage of choice, and join us where… The Activity Continues.Content Warning: In this episode we mention suicide by gunshot, mental illness, specifically depressions and bipolar disorder, so trigger warning for those who need it. However, Irish authorities didn't act until a further seven months later meaning that the drug was still available to buy here. Jerry spoke to John Stack from Tarbert who's chairperson of the Irish Thalidomide Association. John, who turns 61 in January, is Ireland's youngest Thalidomide survivor.

People. Change. Museums.

The term 'agency' has long been considered a term of empowerment, linked to the ability to transgress, to be insurrectionary, political and subversive. But how has the meaning of the term shifted in 2020? This episode takes 'agency' as its keyword and considers how, in museums and other cultural spaces at least, it has come to mean the ability to have a voice as much as to act; to be able to speak up and in speaking up to bring others to the table too. In order to further explore the meaning of 'agency' in 2020, Sophie is joined in this episode by Kelly Doyle, Open Knowledge Coordinator at The Smithsonian Institution (US), Jack Yates, Communications Officer at the Royal Armouries (UK) and Kathleen Lawther, freelance Curator based in Brighton (UK). We also hear from four individuals leading digital in national museums in the UK - Kati Price, Head of Digital Media at the V&A, Rob Cawston, Head of Digital Media at National Museums Scotland, John Stack, Digital Director at the Science Museum Group and Dafydd James, Head of Digital and Strategic Projects Lead, National Museum Wales. Kati, Rob, John and Dafydd discuss what this year has done for digital technology and the role it is continuing to play in keeping museums relevant.

One of the most interesting sessions at MCN2013 was on The Future of Museum Digital Departments, which featured staff from the Tate, the National Gallery, London, Imperial War Museums, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and discussed the sometimes harsh realities of delivering a digital strategy within a complex organization. In the session, John Stack, Head of Digital Transformation at Tate, spoke about the museum’s recently adopted hub-and-spoke model for digital governance. In this episode, we break this idea down, and ask how different organisational structures can impact museums and digital organisations. How are museum digital departments integrated within broader institutional structures, and what impact does this have on digital’s place in the organisation? For this discussion, the ‘punks are joined by Stack, and Keir Winesmith, Head of Web and Digital Platforms at SFMOMA. We talk about digital strategy, organisational structure, and the impact of the evolving digital landscape on the decision making process.
