Government-backed guarantees, from bailouts to bankruptcy protection, help keep the private sector in business in our nation's economic system. What if the same were true not only for businesses but for individuals as well?  In her new book The Guarantee: Inside the Fight for America's Next Economy, Natalie Foster, co-founder and president of the Economic Security Project, invites readers to envision a future where things like housing, health care, higher education, family care, inheritance, and an income floor are not only attainable for everyone but guaranteed by our government. The book blends economics, business, public policy, and social justice and calls for a shift from unchecked capitalism to a country that serves all of its people. The Guarantee examines the changes in government guarantees over the past decade, from student debt relief to the child tax credit expansion. Foster's vision for a new American Guarantee draws from real-life experiences as well as collaborations with activists and visionaries. The Guarantee argues not only that new policies are possible, but that they are ready to implement in twenty-first-century America. Natalie Foster is a leading architect of the movement to build an inclusive and resilient economy. She is the president and co-founder of Economic Security Project and an Aspen Institute Fellow, and her work and writing have appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, Time, Business Insider, CNN, and The Guardian. Populism is taking over the country. Rather than shunning that move, Harris embraced it by choosing the common sense progressive Governor. It helps paint a stark contrast both in style and policy between them and the rich and elite Dear Leader Trump-J.D. Vance MAGA ticket. And Pat covers some of the Michigan primary results. 14:37-38:38: Distill Social's Gina Keller Pat talks with Gina Keller, co-founder and Digital Director of the powerful progressive outfit known as Distill Social. Distill Social works on spreading the progressive message and activism happening in the state through social media.  38:39-42:38: Last Call on Florida Mike's Saudi Ties Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin will face MAGA Republican "Florida" Mike Rogers this November for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Debbie Stabenow. Rogers, who once criticized Dear Leader Trump, is now Dear Leader's buddy. Our studio chat with Kieron (Digital Director at Blackwells, part of the Waterstones group of booksellers) had a number of firsts... Not only the first podcast of 2024 (Happy New Year to one and all!) but also the first time that Georgia and I had been given gifts. In our prep for the studio session Kieron had asked us what were the last three books we'd read. He used this to predict a book for each of us and wrapped them for us to give in the studio! Utterly thoughtful, but more importantly gets to the heart of Kieron's focus upon data AND intuition. In our conversation we talk about the history of Blackwells (surely one of the most famous longstanding and academic booksellers, now a part of the Waterstones group) and some of the dynamics of the book trade online. We discuss learning and the ongoing quest for information and knowledge, and the vital role of staff in retail. This is the origin of the "really different" of our title - how to engage staff with knowledge, skills, passion and individuality rather than falling into the trap of homogeneity. There is so much to learn here about individuality, passion and invention in retail - our thanks to Kieron for being so open with us. --  Run time: 53 minutes   INFORMATION: [

Here's another exciting and informative episode of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! The Christian Nationalism that has overtaken the Michigan Republican Party is trying to take control of the entire state. While Democrats have control of state government for the first time in 40 years, and progressive values have achieved some major victories, right wing Christian Nationalist are taking control of local governments throughout the state. And they are leveling their extreme and dangerous worldview on the people through book bans, defunding of libraries, defunding of local health departments, attacks on public schools and teachers, and by attacking marginalized people. The Christian Nationalist movement is backed by a rich donor base, which wants to divide us just enough so they receive more power and massive tax cuts. But what's worse, is that all of these attacks on marginalized citizens throughout right wing media leads to violence, which is another dangerous aspect of right wing, white Christian Nationalism.  That's why we progressives can't afford to be on the defensive, and we must as I always say, "take the battle to them!" Progressives win by pushing our narrative straight to the people, and bypassing the corporate media structure which remains stuck in pushing a corporate right wing agenda. That's what this podcast is about, but it's what other great progressive organizations are about, too, like Distill Social. Gina Keller, co-founder and Digital Director of Distill Social, joins me to talk about the organization, and how it's utilizing digital media to reach progressives, younger voters, and independents. Distill Social is becoming a force in our state politics because they helping progressives connect, communicate, organize, and more importantly, win through effective messaging! My Last Call wraps-up how the right wing only cares about dividing people through fear, racism, and fear. Meanwhile, they have no agenda to help people, and have no desire to improve the lives of working Michiganders. For example, Michigan's congressional members are silent when it comes to the UAW fight against the Big Three automakers. If the right wing truly cares about average Michiganders, they'd be voicing their support for the UAW, and unions in general. But they remain quiet because the main goal is to enrich its rich donor base. Please, give the podcast a good rating and subscribe, too! leftoflansing.com leftoflansing@gmail.com  --Pat

Won't someone please think of the children? From time immemorial, this has been the battle cry of the moral guardians who want to control what you're allowed to see, hear, or think. Matt Kibbe talks to Shoshana Weissmann, Digital Director at the R Street Institute, about the ways in which Congress is attempting to regulate speech online. Under the guise of protecting children, there are plans to build permanent databases of users' private information, strip the anonymity protections from the internet, and centrally control what kinds of content users are allowed to experience. This is nothing more than an emotional manipulation tactic to claim that anyone who still defends freedom of speech must be against children's safety, which is obviously not the case.
