“Verbal and vague”… this is the way most PTs outline care to patients with acute injuries. Instead, patients should have a full outline of care written down with expected week-by-week healing timelines so they have a plan. However, managing patient care with the “verbal and vague” framework delays healing, decreases patient buy-in, and leads to poor outcomes. This is no different than a patient going to an urgent care and sent home to rest for 4-6 weeks with crutches and anti-inflammatories without a plan. Both are very similar scenarios. In this episode, I share the 3 mistakes physical therapists should avoid when managing injuries in the early healing phases. If you're a sports PT and want to make sure you're maximizing patient outcomes…especially with acute injuries, you need to tune into this episode. Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com Beach season is right around the corner, and that can only mean one thing. Well, two things. The first is that you're going to be scantily clad. And the second is that you're going to want to look good while barely dressed. Strength coach Dan John has jokingly remarked that people who say they want to look good with no shirt on are often the ones you can't even tell work out unless they don't have a shirt on. An admittedly snarky observation, but he's got a valid point. One of the best ways to look like you work out — with or without a shirt on — is by having a big, powerful back. Pullups will getcha there, but another, even more fundamental move will get you to more pullups. Let's all listen in and found out WTF I'm talking about, shall we?

Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com Without a doubt, when it comes to kettlebell training, a heavy military press is the peak of achievement for most people. It signals that you are a serious trainee, that you have put in a lot of effort, and that you deserve all those jealous stares you're getting from strangers as they watch you hoist heavy kettlebells aloft in your yard or at the nearby park. But a lot of people never reach that peak and are instead forever mired in a purgatory of handling light to moderate weights. What gives? Well, keep this in mind: a good peak is only as strong as its base. And what you might need is some more MUSCLE, pal. This episode dishes on 3 of my favorite kettlebell moves for doing exactly that.
Today in the podcast, I'm very excited to bring on Tom Callow, who is another wonderful strength coach working in Australia. Tom has a ton of experience, helping gymnasts learn how to lift, helping them get stronger and more powerful, and working on their sprinting speed. Originally from the UK, he has had various S&C roles with Bristol Academy of Sport, Aus International School Singapore, and now Tom Callow Performance. His mission is to help athletes maximize opportunities in sport and life. This is evident on his Instagram which showcases the phenomenal work he is doing with gymnasts and other sporting athletes to get stronger, more powerful, and really be explosive. We're seeing more and more gymnasts who are opening their minds and are using the hybrid model of one to two days of general weight training with dumbbells and barbells, and kettlebells, but then still doing two to three days of gymnastic-specific strengthening with rope climbs and leg lifts. But coaches are still slightly overwhelmed with how to get the best of both worlds. How do you get somebody stronger, faster, and more powerful from a weight room, but also try to make sure we don't lose out on those essential handstands, rope climbs, and leg lifts. I've been trying my best to get on a lot of great information about how we get this happy medium between the two. In our discussion, Tom gives clarity on what general weight room training entails for athletes and explains in a way for coaches, gymnasts, and parents to understand. We Discuss: How to integrate general strength training into gymnastics. The difference between strength training and bodybuilding. Exercise you need in your general S&C programs for gymnasts. Why the basics are key.Exactly how to get stronger and faster for vault. How much weight to start with and when. Then Vitesse Arnhem was at the same location as the Olympic Committee, so I moved there for around 7 years, and met some really good coaches over there. One of them took me to Dubai to work with a team there as a Strength & Conditioning coach, and then I came back to work with Heerenveen in the same role. Then Peter Bosz, who I worked with at Vitesse called me, and asked whether I wanted to come and work at Bayer Leverkusen. I worked at Bayer 04 Leverkusen for 2 seasons before moving for just over a season to Olympique Lyon. Ultimately I think that you DO need added weight to build your legs up to their full strength potential, BUT you can absolutely get a dynamite strength workout in with just your bodyweight alone. The 3 moves profiled in this episode can give your legs just the boost they need.

Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com Calisthenics training for serious strength is really not much different than language learning. That may sound strange, but consider this: A language has a structure, a grammar, formal and informal styles, a vocabulary, common words and phrases, etc. Calisthenics training has principles, practices, certain ‘lead-in' exercises to work you toward harder ones, progressions, programs, workouts, etc. What do they have in common? Well, if you've ever tangled with either and got defeated, I can practically guaran-damn-tee you that you approached it from the wrong end! I'll show you how to approach it from the RIGHT end on this podcast. Listen in and enjoy.
Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com There's a saying I like that goes a little something like this: “Don't let your mouth write checks that your fists can't cash” In other words, mind your Ps and Qs and don't start trouble with people whose tush you can't whoop. The same goes for your body: don't write checks that your body can't cash! I talk at length about what that means - and how to avoid needless pain - in this podcast episode. Stop reading this damn description and tune in already, will ya?
This episode is a roundtable discussion about the experiences of women in strength and conditioning, and especially in the tactical environment. Erica Mansaray, Jaimie Lafler, and Paula Arreola are all coaches working in different parts of the tactical space. Their academic and professional backgrounds are varied, including more and less traditional paths, everything from high school to professional sports, and both conventional and special operations military environments across multiple branches. The conversation covers a lot of ground, but some highlights include working in male dominated environments (both military and athletics), getting mansplained to (which we explained to them), and their thoughts on gender based fitness standards in the military. On some issues they were unanimous, while on others they disagreed, and their feedback provides a ton of valuable insight. Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com There are a great many questions out there that can help expand your mind: Who are we and where do we come from? What is the meaning of life? What makes Teflon stick to the pan? For some questions there are no easy answers. For others, things are markedly easier. Here's a good question I get asked not infrequently: “what builds more strength — going heavier or doing more reps?” Well boy oh boy, do I have a good answer for you. Listen in and enjoy.
Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com When it comes to strength training, one of the common rallying cries against calisthenics is that you can't use it to strengthen your legs (no one questions bodyweight training's ability to build epic upper body strength, however). The reality is that that is only partially true. You absolutely CAN make your lower body stronger with just bodyweight exercises, though you'll definitely get the best results by combining bodyweight and weighted exercises. Unless you're already strong as an ox (but hopefully prettier), you might need a little help - and I aim to give it to ya.
“Pain isn't going anywhere, it's always going to feel the same, but how you decide to categorize it is what changes. I can't change that it hurts, but I can change that I don't care. As a fighter and martial artist, the biggest thing to ensure your success is that no matter what situation you are in, there is an acceptance of pain. Once you fully take that on board you have become a very dangerous individual.” – Paul McIlroyMy guest this episode is Paul McIlroy, who is one of the most sought-after Sports Scientists in the World. He is a former Boxer, a Martial Artist, a Powerlifting Champion, and a world class Kettlebell Instructor under Pavel Tsatsouline. He has coached and trained World Champions in Powerlifting, Kettlebell Sport, and Combat Sports. He is the founder and creator of the Amazing 12, The World's #1 Body Transformation Program that has produced over 10,000 transformations in 148 countries. This episode is all about physical and mental strength as a martial art. We dive deep into the mathematics of strength and conditioning and how kettlebell training directly transfers to martial arts and sport combat. My Key takeaway is that the ability to relax your mind under pressure and accept pain is essential for success in our endeavors. When we feel pain or discomfort the mind wants to give up, we have to train the mind and body to find our center and make adjustments so we can endure. When training we need to programmatically approach our sessions with the goal of progressively expanding our comfort zones. If we can embrace pain and teach ourselves to become comfortable in uncomfortable situations, we begin to remove the limits of what is possible. This is an eye-opening conversation with an innovator in Martial Arts Strength and Conditioning. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Paul's work and I hope this conversation inspires you to find out what your mind and body are truly capable off.
“Why isn't my knee better? Why am I still in pain?” These dreaded conversations can be avoided with proper planning. As a physical therapist, nothing is more frustrating than patients not getting better. In this episode, I share the two essential components to make the tough conversations easy.If you're a sports physical therapist who is sick and tired of avoiding or having these types of conversations, you need to tune into this episode. One of my favorite drills for happier knees and heavier squats is what I like to call the heels-elevated hip thrust (or hip bridge, whatever you wanna call it). Basically, it works like this: you lay on the floor near some sort of an elevation (a couch works great), and provided you first have your spouse's permission, you put your feet up on the couch and then bridge your hips toward the sky. It looks a little something like this: https://youtu.be/p6zml5Z7ghM So what are they good for? Well, quit reading this description and go listen to the episode already!

Cory Walts was hired as the Director of Strength & Conditioning at the University of Pennsylvania in April 2019. Walts came to Penn from nearby Haverford College, where he spent 12 years as the head strength and conditioning coach and fitness center director. During that time, he designed and implemented year-round sports performance programs for a majority of Haverford's 23 varsity sports and several club sports teams. He utilized a holistic approach to create robust individuals and teams, focusing on physiological qualities (movement skill, strength, power, speed, agility, and energy systems); psychological qualities (growth mindset, grit, and internal motivation through the use of education, autonomy and accountability); and lifestyle qualities (positive habit formation in sleep, nutrition, hydration, and mindfulness). During Walts' tenure, a number of Haverford teams reached unprecedented heights. The volleyball program won three consecutive Centennial Conference titles under Walts' guidance and reached the NCAA Regional semifinals in 2014, while men's soccer advanced to the 2015 NCAA Elite Eight. From the spring season, baseball won three conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Regionals and had two student-athletes drafted in the eighth round of the MLB Draft, while softball advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in 2016. Haverford also had 12 student-athletes selected as National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports All-Americans during his last five years on campus. In addition to his work with Haverford student-athletes, Walts served as director of the Joe Schwartz '83 Memorial 3K Run/Walk, which raised more than $75,000 for ALS research and had more than 2,000 participants from the campus community. He taught multiple classes within Haverford's Physical Education program and co-created the Healthy Mind/Healthy Body and Employee Wellness Committees, multi-department initiatives aimed at enhancing student and employee wellness respectively. Walts is co-Head of the Philadelphia Area Strength & Conditioning Association, which fosters relationships and develops knowledge specific to the profession of Strength & Conditioning for those in and around the Philadelphia area. He also is a member of West Chester University's Exercise Science Advisory Board and oversees the Strength and Conditioning program for the Marian Anderson Recreation Center in South Philadelphia. In 2013, Walts was a finalist for the NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Award. Walts graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College in 2005 with a major in clinical exercise science and played four years for the football program. Following internships with the strength and conditioning departments at Cornell University and the Buffalo Bills, he earned his master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 2007. Walts also worked with the Terps' strength and conditioning department during his two years in College Park, serving as the strength and conditioning coach for men's tennis and assisted with football, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming. Walts is a Certified (with Distinction) Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a Certified Level 1 Sports Performance Coach with USA Weightlifting. He also is Precision Nutrition Level 1 certified and certified in CPR/First Aid and AED by the American Red Cross.

Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com I'm a big believer in sticking to the basics in your programming — a push, a pull, a hinge, a squat, a gait-pattern movement, and a few other in-between moves like twisting and lunging. This will always come in handy and together all these moves are about all you need to get as strong as you want. There is, however, a caveat. While these movements — done in just the standard way — will get you super duper crazy strong (a technical term, obviously) for a very long time, there are a lot of nooks and crannies in your body that they will miss — nooks and crannies that serve as the mortar that ensures that you stay not only strong, but resilient — that is, less prone to injury. There are a few ways you can address this. What are these ways? Listen in and I shall regale thee.
Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com Getting strong is important. A lot of people like to focus on “general fitness” (whatever that means) in their training, without realizing that fitness simply means the ability to complete a task. As you have probably figured out by now, just about any task you can think of is a lot easier to complete when you're strong. Hard to argue with that. Here are a few things you need to keep in mind to get stronger: (and by "here" I clearly mean "in the episode itself", so stop reading FFS and go listen!)

But what if you're going to be out of town for a week, two weeks, or even a month or so? AND, what do you do if the regular equipment you'd otherwise have access to may be tough to come by? Do you just give up on your gains and slide back to square one? Hardly, friendo. Pat and I will show you the glorious way forward to Gainsville (not the Florida one, the figurative one) in this fine episode.
