A two-time former Mayor of Ennis claims an erosion of democracy has contributed to his decision not to seek re-election. Cllr Johnny Flynn will bring the curtain down on his twenty-year career in local politics in June after having first being elected to the Town Council in 2004. The Tulla Road resident topped the polls in Ennis in 2009 and played a major role in the county's bid to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2016, while serving as Mayor the previous year. Johnny Flynn has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that while his decision is primarily based on personal factors of health and family, he believes the creation of the Ennis 2040 DAC has undermined the influence of elected representatives.

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 82: Irish Guitar Virtuoso Shane Hennessy and Milwaukee Irish Festival Irish virtuoso guitarist Shane Hennessy has established himself as one of the leading guitarists on the world stage, known widely for his fingerstyle, flatpicking, and percussive guitar-playing approaches. His energetic live performances and his cinematically-vivid compositions tie in influences from Bach to Beyoncé – and everything in between! With a unique style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band – covering drums, bass, rhythm and lead lines – Shane builds a complete sonic world entirely on his own. A musician from a young age, Shane credits his background in Irish traditional music as the base on which he has built his genre-defying musical explorations. Initially a concertina player under the tuition of the renowned Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh, he achieved successes in the Fleadh Cheoil competitions in Ireland. He then turned to the guitar aged twelve inspired by the music of James Taylor. Becoming more interested in songwriting and in music in general, it was when he discovered the styles of Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins that his interest in solo performance blossomed. Since that time, he has toured the world with thousands of shows under his belt, four albums of music, and a proven track record as a performer, songwriter, arranger, accompanist, and session musician. Billed as “one of the most exciting live performers of his generation, with an ability to move between styles and genres with ease” by Irish Music Magazine, audiences can never be too sure what will come next during the exciting mix of jazz, blues, country, soul, traditional Irish music, and world music he offers. With the addition of some smooth vocals, genre-hopping improvisations, and well-arranged covers, it makes sense why music legend super-producer Nile Rodgers (CHIC) thinks that “his style is killer, it's really cool stuff”, and why guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel says that Shane “transcends the guitar the same way Muhammed Ali transcended boxing”. All information for Shane is on his website: https://www.shanehennessy.ie/

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an ceathrú lá de mhí an Mheithimh. Is mise Sibéal Dempsey. Tá scuainí daoine ag fanacht uaireanta ag aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath le seachtain anuas, agus chaill thar ceithre chéad déag duine a gcuid eitiltí an deireadh seachtaine seo caite amháin. D'aithin Údarás Aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath gur theip orthu ina ndualgais do phaisinéirí an deireadh seachtaine seo caite, ag tabhairt le fios gurbh í an phríomhfhadhb ná nach raibh acmhainní foirne i bhfeidhm chun déileáil leis an líon daoine a rabhthas ag súil a thiocfadh chuig an aerfort. I measc na saincheisteanna eile a luaigh ceannaire an Lucht Oibre Ivana Bacik mar shampla, tá teip sa bheartas náisiúnta eitlíochta a chinntiú go ndéantar eitiltí a dháileadh go héifeachtach idir aerfoirt na tíre, chun scuainí a bhainistiú. Tháinig an t-aerfort faoi ghrinnscrúdú freisin nuair a dúradh gur bhain an príomhfheidhmeannach úsáid as seiceáil isteach príobháideach, a íocadh mar chostas gnó, chun cuid de na scuainí a sheachaint. Níos luaithe an tseachtain seo d'aontaigh an tAontas Eorpach le lánchosc ar fhormhór allmhairí ola na Rúise. Mar thoradh ar an lánchosc, atá mar chuid den séú pacáiste smachtbhannaí ag an Aontas Eorpach, gearrfar thart ar nócha faoin gcéad ar allmhairí, méadú ó seachtó cúig faoin gcéad atá i bhfeidhm láithreach. I measc na smachtbhannaí eile a fógraíodh tá toirmeasc ar thrí chraoltóir eile faoi úinéireacht stát na Rúise agus smachtbhannaí i gcoinne daoine aonair áirithe a bhí páirteach i gcogadh na hÚcráine. D'fhógair an Chomhairle freisin go bhfuil sí ar tí naoi mbilliún euro a dheonú don Úcráin i gcabhair lena hatógáil tar éis an chogaidh. D'fhreagair an Rúis trí ghearradh ar a soláthairtí gáis chuig roinnt tíortha lena n-áirítear an Danmhairg agus an Ghearmáin. Tá fleadh nua ceoil traidisiúnta saor in aisce darb ainm ‘Smithfield Fleadh' fógartha ag Comhairle Cathrach Bhaile Átha Cliath. Beidh an fleadh ar siúl ar an ochtú agus an naoú lá déag de mhí an Mheithimh agus beidh raon ceoil agus rince beo ann, sean-nós ina measc. Tá roinnt daoine mór le rá ó shaol an cheoil thraidisiúnta sa chlár, leithéidí Cormac Begley, agus beidh tallann nua Éireannach á léiriú ag an am céanna. Is í an ócáid seo an chéad cheann dá leithéid a reáchtálfar sa Chearnóg agus tarlóidh sí roimh an Fleadh Cheoil a bhfuil aithne níos fearr air, a bheidh ar siúl i mbliana sa Mhuileann gCearr go luath i mí Lúnasa. Tá sé ráite ag Méara Bhaile Átha Cliath faoin bhféile go bhfuil súil aici gur féidir leis an bhféile leanúint ar ais de réir mar a thagann fás ar shaol an cheoil thraidisiúnta agus an cheoil tíre. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Tá an script ar fáil i d'aip phodchraolta. * GLUAIS beartas náisiúnta eitlíochta - national aviation policy grinnscrúdú - scrutiny lánchosc - embargo allmhairí - imports toirmeasc - prohibition fleadh - festival

Joanne and I go way back, having come up through the life universities of The Willie Clancy summer school and the Fleadh Cheoil competitions in Ireland. We've had great fun over the years knocking head over our differing opinions on the virtue of playing polkas on a banjo. I'm not a fan, but Joanne finally explains to me how to do it properly!! We take a fond trip down memory lane in this interview, Joanne reminiscing about simpler times playing music as a child growing up in Co Limerick, the "craic" of the fleadhs, the mummers and the wren boys. Joanne is a terrific story teller and even better musician and a truly kind hearted soul.

There have been warm tributes to the late Jerry Lynch, who passed away this weekend. Jerry was born and reared in the townland of Clogher, three miles due south of Kilfenora in Co. Clare, a village famous for it’s tradition of ceili music. Over the years many of his ancestors have played with the Kilfenora Ceili Band, including his father P.J, brother Pat and his other brother John is the present band leader. Jerry was a wonderful Irish tenor and has sung at concerts and festivals in Ireland, the U.K and the U.S. He is described locally as a total gentleman. He was also member of Kilfenora Choir and Ennistymon Choral Society. In 1998, Jerry released his first complete album, The Dimming of the Day, produced by his cousin P.J Curtis. To date this album has sold 35,000 units and continues to sell well every Christmas. This is due mainly to the popularity of “ A Silent Night Christmas 1915 ”, a really moving song about The Christmas Truce in WW 1. It was written by Cormac McConnell from Enniskillen. He featured with a host of other artists on the Clare (Banner) anthem written by Tim Collins "Clare, My Heart My Home" which was launched during Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Ennis 2017. In 2019 the Kilfenora Ceili Band launched there latest album "Both Sides Now", Jerry sang two songs on the album "Crusader" and "John O'Dreams". (Attached) and toured around the country with the Kilfenora to launch the new album. This year, Jerry's daughter Kathleen Malone launched a charity album "My Island Home", all proceeds from this CD will go to Burren Chernobyl Project, she mentions in the notes of the album, that she is so happy her Dad, Jerry, sang "Whispering Hope" and "You'll Never be the sun" with her on the album. Jerry is a huge loss to the traditional and choral music community and will be greatly missed. Tim Collins of the Kilfenora Ceilí Band spoke with Gavin on Monday's Morning Focus to pay tribute to Jerry Lynch.
Did you know that you can reverse engineer any unwanted conditioning of yours and then build that unstoppable mindset afterwards? Well, you can. Today in the Fire In The Belly Podcast, Pete talks to Eamonn Walsh, a Sales Coach and the creator of The Power of the Individual, where he educates on how you can use your personal power to grow, lead, and succeed—whether it be in your career or your business. His clients are mostly individuals who have had problems with their businesses (particularly start-ups) but were able to save them, if not improve them further, with Eamonn’s immense help. Some topics discussed in this episode are; creating value, being responsible, accepting failures and finding your language. Start tuning in to learn more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Best of both worlds. No matter what it is, whether it be music or innovative business solutions, Eamonn makes sure he’s all in. He can create something useful out of nothing. Always curious, always tinkering on stuff. It was always his passion to create, since he enjoys seeing significant results and getting problems solved. Responsibility = empowerment. We’re responsible for what happens to us. We choose who to surround ourselves with, what next steps to take, and what paths to follow. If you always choose the best things, and also are ready for failures, then it’s easy to achieve your wanted results. That’s your personal power. Find your success language. It’s easy to attract success when you speak confidently and positively, just like any successful person. You will attract like-minded people. This will also help you in a sales environment. There’s a language that you and the other party (i.e. customer) understands. You can easily convince people of what you’re selling, may it be an idea, a product, or a service. There’s also the importance of non-verbal language. When the world feels good to you, it will resonate. If what you’re doing doesn’t create value, then why are you still doing it? For Eamonn, it’s important that every time he creates and starts a new project, it helps other people. BEST MOMENTS “Fire in the belly for me is true passion. It’s when you truly made a decision on something and nothing stands in your way.” “I enjoyed school because I had great and fantastic opportunities to do what I wanted to do, build/ create things, and turn one thing into something completely different.” “I am responsible for everything that’s in my world. And I am responsible for what remains in my world.” “Failure is often the right decision.” “CAN is the most obvious truth you will ever tell yourself, and CAN’T is the most obvious lie you will tell yourself.” “What the Power of the individual does is teach reverse engineering; take those bits of conditioning that you don’t like and replace it with something good.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to Fire In The Belly Podcast in Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061)! On 5 July last year, Owen Maguire was shot four times in Drogheda, Co Louth. This is seen as the start of a feud between two gangs in the town. By November the situation began to boil over with a range violent attacks taking place. Locals are becoming increasingly fed up of the feud, and efforts are now underway to bring it to an end. Gardaí have stepped up armed patrols, and the town is eager to make next month's Fleadh Cheoil pass without a hitch. However, ending a cycle of violence like this isn't easy, and often requires a community-wide approach. In this week's podcast, TheJournal.ie reporter Garreth MacNamee and Ged Nash, a Labour senator who has represented Louth for two decades, join Nicky Ryan in studio to examine the origins of the feud, the scale of the violence so far and the impact on the local population, but also how gardaí and the community can take action to prevent the situation spiraling.
