Fair warning, these are hard cases to hear and definitely hard cases to narrate, so if you hear the emotion in my voice, you have no idea how many times i had to reread some of these paragraphs until I could get them out without a croak.Canaan Bower of Las Cruces, New Mexico, was 16 years old when he prevented a kidnapping, or worse, of a family at a gas station. Canaan was a champion heavyweight wrestler, but also an exemplary leader and human being, and his story is important.Jayden Perkins, of Chicago, Illinois, was 11 years old when he saved his pregnant mom and unborn sibling from almost certain death when his mom's distant ex burst into their home with a knife. Jayden was that child whom everyone adored, who brought light and sunshine into the day of every person he met. His story must be told, so that he will never be forgotten.Josslyn Millan, of Midvale, Utah, was 13 years old when her world went in an instant from a safe, family environment to absolute terror in a carjacking. For this week's episode of Saturday School, where we're exploring Asian American interracial cinema, we have a special guest: Josslyn Luckett, assistant professor of cinema studies at New York University! We've invited her to our podcast to tell us about her research, which explores the beginnings of an affirmative action initiative at UCLA's film school in the late 1960s and early 1970s called Ethno-Communications. Before there were organizations created to center each racial group's specific experience (some of these students branched off to create Visual Communications, which produces the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival), aspiring filmmaking students of color in L.A. studied together, ventured out into different ethnic communities together, protested injustice together, got arrested together and made films about it all together. Laura Ho's 1970 short film "Sleepwalkers" explores the headspace following an arrest for protesting on behalf of an unjustly fired Black food worker. Duane Kubo's 1975 "Cruisin' J-Town," which we covered in Season 3, ends with a cross-cultural rendition of El Teatro Campersino’s “America de los Indios.” And Alan Kondo's 1974 "...I Told You So" documents Japanese American poet Lawson Inada, who grew up in a Chicano community, was influenced by Black music and later became one of the co-editors of a 1974 anthology on Asian American literature (published by Howard University Press). Brian and I often joke that accessibility is not a requirement when it comes to the films we talk about in Saturday School. Many of these films are only available in college libraries or in the archives of Visual Communications in their Little Tokyo office in downtown Los Angeles. But even if we can't watch all of them, Josslyn wants us all to know that there is a long history of Asian American, Black, Latino American and Native American filmmakers working in solidarity to document and illuminate each others' music, poetry and struggles.

Korey grew up on a small farm and ranch in Glenns Ferry, ID. His success was a result of a great family, great friends and the support of a close knit community. After graduating high school, he attended Boise State University. Korey graduated with a degree in Construction Management while also starting four years as an inside linebacker for the Broncos. He finished his collegiate career with a win over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, one of the greatest college football games ever played. He went on to play four years with the Green Bay Packers and started at fullback in the 2011 Super Bowl win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He finished his last season in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. One of the biggest benefits of this experience was the intangible value of being part of great teams and understanding what’s possible when individuals come together and create something greater than themselves. The same holds true for business, people don’t follow companies, they follow great leaders. Korey started his career in the construction industry with Engineered Structures Inc. where he was a Project Engineer on multiple commercial and medical related jobs. He later moved on as a Project Manager and contributed to projects such as City Center Plaza, Boise Centre Expansion and the Boise State University Fine Arts building. As a Construction Manager for BVA Development, Korey is committed to assisting in the construction division expansion that will grow to accommodate the rapidly developing commercial industry. He prides himself on having the drive and tenacity to overcome any obstacles in his path and always welcomes future challenges. Korey has very high expectations for his professional career but his family is the foundation and focus of his priorities. He was married in 2011 to his wife Jennie and they have two small girls, Leila and Josslyn. They are the primary motivation of his relentless pursuit of excellence.
