Have you ever noticed that the smarter you are, the more you question yourself and the more you struggle to make the original contributions you are uniquely qualified to make? Well, I certainly have and that lead me to connect with another coach who is just as obsessed with helping high achievers overcome their resistance and avoidance, Jane Elliot, PhD. In this compelling conversation, Jane and I explore her framework for understanding and overcoming the four shades of avoidance - the spincyclers, overdeliverers, upper limiters, and white knucklers—unpacking how these behaviors manifest and impact driven women. We shed light on why perfectionism isn't just a standalone issue but a symptom of deeper resistance, and how being identified as gifted can be a burden, leading to genuinely painful struggles to reach inner and outer expectations. Jane and I share our insights on the spiritual aspects of using one's gifts in service to others, the identity struggles of highly intelligent individuals, and the importance of radical self-acceptance and continuous personal evolution. We discuss her innovative framework, and her quiz, inviting you to determine which type of “self-eating brain” is holding you back. You'll hear the inspiring success story of Regina, a lawyer-turned-novelist, and how Jane's transformative coaching program unblocked her brilliance.

Jane Elliott is a citizen of The United States of America. She is a lecturer and a diversity educator. Her focus is leading people out of the ignorance of education. As a schoolteacher, she became known for her "Blue eyes/Brown eyes" exercise. She first conducted her famous exercise for her class on April 5, 1968, the day after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. When her local newspaper published compositions that the children had written about the experience, the reactions (both positive and negative) formed the basis for her career as a public speaker against discrimination. Elliott's classroom exercise was filmed the third time she held it with her third-graders in 1970, becoming the documentary The Eye of the Storm. This in turn inspired a retrospective that reunited the 1970 class members with their teacher fifteen years later in "A Class Divided", an episode of the PBS series Frontline. After leaving her school, Elliott became a full-time diversity educator. She still holds the exercise and gives lectures about its effects all over the U.S. as well as in several locations overseas. She has conducted the exercise with college students, as seen in the 2001 documentary The Angry Eye. When you say Matt Gaetz sank to a new low, he considers it a challenge. The Florida rep even body shamed a 19 year old on Twitter. Fox & Friends broke up with Trump. The Repubs are waiting on Shitler to kick the bucket, allegedly. Half of older Americans exist in poverty. The permanent daylight savings bill hit a wall in the House. A vile GOP candidate accused former FLOTUS Michelle Obama of promoting luciferianism. Right wing “personality” Woozuh demanded Republican candidate Kelly Tshibaka pay him 100k or he'll out her for being in a race-mixed relationship. Authority on race Jane Elliot explained the relationship between white supremacy and abortion. Faux historian Dave Barton blathered something about Biblical quotes showing up in the Constitution.
On this episode of the Melanated Movement Podcast, Tess & Anne discuss the Roe v Wade ruling and what it means for us and human rights. We briefly dissect through some of the upcoming cases that could come up next on the Supreme Court docket and how they would affect us all. We try to keep it lighthearted but want to give you a content warning: We visit the issues of race, abortion, oppression and content that may be sensitive to some. Please listen in! *Note: Tess mentioned an experience conducted by Jane Elliot and mistakenly shared that it was on the Ellen show. It was in fact on the Oprah show some time in the 90s. We apologize for the misdirection. ** If you enjoyed this episode, please follow and continue the conversation with us on our IG: @melanatedmovementpodcast and leave us a review on your preferred podcast streaming platform! In this weeks episode I will discuss DEI and an original Pioneer Jane Elliot. Jane Elliott, internationally known teacher, lecturer, diversity trainer, and recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education, exposes prejudice and bigotry for what it is, an irrational class system based upon purely arbitrary factors. And if you think this does not apply to you. . . you are in for a rude awakening. We are TIRED this week! Pardon the exhausted voices on this one. Nilah's going through a phase where the bedtime routine is taking about two hours every night. She's tap dancing all over our nerves, so we're working on being more patient:-) Also this week: - Chris trusted his instincts and left a major project. - Natalie was a little overwhelmed during a school trip and is feeling more signs that she wants to pursue another career. - VERY SERIOUS: Eliana was approached by a strange man who's apparently been hanging around schools trying to talk to kids. We're proud of the way she handled herself. For our listeners in Mannheim, we've shared links below to contact the Polizei. Lastly, we talked briefly about the Roe vs. Wade decision being overturned by the Supreme Court in the US. It's a major step back for women's abortion rights, while furthering a white supremacist agenda. Just do a little research and you'll be shocked at the connections. - Jane Elliot explains the connection between abortion rights & racism: https://youtu.be/WD0kIFp_zzI - Remarks by GOP Rep. Two amazing humans navigate the grey as they discuss their response to Jane Elliot's question - "If you as a white person would be happy to receive the same treatment that our black citizens do in this society - please stand!" It is a question we ask our listeners to truly reflect on. In 2022, would you want to live as a person in a marginalized community - if not, specifically, why? It's something each person should really wrestle with and ask themselves how they are creating an environment where this question is no longer necessary. In this episode Alexandra Hodge and Astrid Ferguson discuss diversity and inclusion in the workplace, biases they didn't realize they had, and the brown eye blue eye experiment by Jane Elliot. Most people think of diversity and inclusion as one of the same but in reality they are separate. In the workplace the main thing that is missing and spent the least amount of time is in, is training. Alexandra who worked in HR many years, particularly in the training department, shares how costly hiring a new person can easily become and human capital being the prime investment for organizations not fully utilized.Sisters Alexandra and Astrid challenge you to discover your own biases while also discovering the level of engagement provided by your organization for people of color. Hiring people of color just to meet a quota is not conducive and is the antiquated way of looking at diversity and inclusion. Listen to Astrid share what she has learned within the first week of courses of her certification in diversity and inclusion.Don't forget to follow us on our social media accounts:https://www.callyoursisterpodcast.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cys_podcast Facebook: Call Your Sister PodcastTwitter: @CYS_PodEmail: cysnation@gmail.comSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cyspodcast)

This episode kind of acts as a companion to episode 1. You don't have to listen to episode 1 first in order to follow along, but you'll get the most out of it if you do. **I made a mistake at 0:38. I said “it's going to be episode 22,” but obviously this is episode 23.** We discuss: my new cat and animal domestication, suburban education vs urban education, whether giving more money to urban schools would improve them, how suburban schools handle student misbehavior vs. urban schools, the age where students are considered responsible for their own problems, brain breaks and block schedules, teacher coaches and supervisors, the pledge of allegiance, critical race theory, and ideologies in education, student seating arrangements and 504 plans, lesson planning, curriculum, and the parallels between teaching and DMing, dynamic characters vs static characters, overanalyzing art and where meaning in art comes from, school boards, racism and some problems with wokeism, mental health and anxiety, and therapy. This week we take a look at Jane Elliot's Brown Eyes, Blue Eyes Experiment! We watched the PBS documentary before the podcast and used the time during the podcast to reflect on what we saw and how it has affect the world. We also take a quick look at race and race based issues and ask if a experiment like this is even more needed compared to the 70's. Guide for Episode 8- A Class Divided Blue Eyes/brown eyes Intro- Welcome back to Hypothetically Sound, Thank you for listening, today we are gonna take a look at a social experiment. This social experiment is called The eye of the storm or a class divided or its most popular name, brown eye/blue eye experiment. This is a very popular social experiment that many teachers still use today, I myself helped teach or have taught Jane Eliots experiment in some high school classrooms and in a few college classrooms. SO guys, I had us all watch the PBS documentary, before we get into the planned questions I have for you, what were your impressions of the documentary? Link to PBS- https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/introduction-2/ Colin Kaepernick- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Kaepernick -First impressions What did you think? Was it well done? -Do you think this experiment actually changed these kids( they were easily using the N word) Do you think it had a lasting impact? Do you think the parents understood? How do you think todays parents would have taken it? -So the kids changed so easily when told they were dumb or smart, do you think the same thing would happen today? Do you think this type of mindset is what allowed slavery to go on so long? I.E telling slaves they were dumb made them dumb and not rise up Is this how oppression started Your takes on slavery and modern day slavery -So Jane Elliot does this experiment to adults as well, and White adults seem to get angrier faster than the white children, why do you think that is? White Privilege Adults are too comfortable in their norms and strike back when challenged? Oprah clip- https://youtu.be/ebPoSMULI5U FaceBook Clip- https://fb.watch/8dTESt68kR/ -After watching it, do you believe that the experiment is unethical and does more harm than good, or is the experiment done well and necessary Jane Elliot Quote- We don't need a melting pot, we need a salad bowl. You put in the different things you want it all, the veggies, the onions, cucumbers, peppers to maintain the identity, you appreciate the differences, a melting pot doesn't appreciate the differences. WE want a country of differences
This Week: the tiny hamlet of Central York, PA is making news this week as community activists were able to successfully pressure the school board to rescind their temporary ban on just about every book, essay, film, and website that ever said anything about racism, or people of color, or women, or LGBTQ+ people, or really just anything that the rabid “anti CRT'' crowd of fanatics has been led to believe they should fear. If it weren't so dangerous, it'd be comical. The banned books list included 3 former #AOTAshow guests (go us, I guess?), along with a Sesame Street town hall, a book about boys wearing pink, a book about Black people liking their hair, and young adult biographies of the likes of Rosa Parks, MLK Jr, and Sonia Sotomayor. Oh, and they also banned the entire collected works of Jane Elliot, and Learning For Justice. So, it's a hot mess. Manuel and Jeff get into it and talk about why this case is completely bonkers, and also so important for us to pay attention to. Jane Elliott went from a 3rd grade school teacher in Riceville, Iowa to one of the world's most recognized lecturers on race. The day after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In April 1968, she changed her 3rd grade lesson plan to what she became known for - her ‘Blue eyes/Brown eyes” exercise. It exposes prejudice and bigotry for what it is - an irrational class system based upon purely arbitrary factors. She has since led this exercise in civic and corporate settings for many decades, highlighting the arbitrary and irrational basis of prejudice, an issue that Americans continue to grapple with more than five decades after she started. She's a real firecracker with a huge heart and an unapologetic voice that's on full display in this conversation!
