Auringosta virtaa koko ajan avaruuteen sähköisesti varattuja hiukkasia, jotka maapallon magneettikenttä ohjaa lähelle napa-alueita etelässä ja pohjoisessa. Toisinaan Aurinko roihauttaa kohti Maata suuren hiukkaspilven, joka saa aikaan geomagneettisen myrskyn: taivas loimuaa revontulia täynnä ja maapallon magneettikenttä heilahtelee hurjasti. Äärimmillään sähköverkot romahtavat, satelliitit ovat vaikeuksissa ja tietoliikenne takkuaa. Avaruusmyrsky vaikuttaa myös GPS-satelliittipaikannuksen tarkkuuteen. Kilpisjärvellä sijaitsee Suomen suurin radioteleskooppi KAIRA, jonka päätarkoitus on sondata ionosfääriä Lapin päällä ja testata uudenlaista radiotekniikkaa. 80 - 400 kilometrin korkeudessa oleva ionosfääri on ilmakehän kerros, joka ottaa vastaan nuo Auringon iskut. Siksi sen tutkiminen on äärimmäisen tärkeää ja kiinnostavaa. KAIRAlla seurataankin reaaliajassa ionosfääriä ja muodostetaan siitä kuva radiotaajuuksilla.
