What happens when a university rethinks the whole higher ed model rebuilds it around hands-on, project-based learning?Matt Kirchner dives into the bold model pioneered by Worcester Polytechnic Institute with Dr. Kristin Wobbe, Director of the Center for Project-Based Learning. A biochemist turned curriculum innovator, Kris has spent nearly two decades helping WPI embed real-world projects into every stage of a student's education. From first-year seminars on global challenges to immersive junior-year team projects with community partners around the world, WPI's model turns students into creators, collaborators, and critical thinkers from day one.Whether you're a university leader or an instructor in search of a better way to teach, this episode offers a masterclass in how to make learning stick.Listen to learn:Why students don't need to “know everything” before they dive into hands-on learningHow WPI redesigned its calendar and credits to prioritize deep project workWhat first-year students can accomplish when they take on global problemsHow project-based learning transforms both faculty culture and student confidenceWhy WPI students are more prepared for the workforce than their peers3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:1. Project-based learning works best when it starts early and is embedded across the entire student journey. At WPI, students can opt into the Great Problems Seminar in their first year—a two-course sequence that explores global issues like food security, energy, and AI through interdisciplinary teamwork. By senior year, every student must complete a Major Qualifying Project worth three full courses, often in partnership with faculty or industry, making project-based learning a requirement, not an add-on.2. The humanities directly enhance technical learning and student outcomes.WPI's alumni data shows students who complete their humanities and arts curriculum earlier perform better in technical coursework later on. These experiences sharpen communication, interdisciplinary research, and critical thinking skills—essential for identifying problems worth solving and communicating solutions effectively in STEM fields.3. Project-based learning is scalable far beyond polytechnic institutions.Through WPI's Center for Project-Based Learning, Kris and her team have supported schools ranging from the Air Force Academy to community colleges and liberal arts institutions like the New England Conservatory of Music. With 85% of WPI faculty incorporating projects into their courses—and over half of student work now project-based—the model proves adaptable across disciplines, schedules, and resource levels.Resources in this Episode:To learn more about the Center for Project-Based Learning at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, visit: https://wp.wpi.edu/projectbasedlearning/Other resources:Read Kris's book Project-Based Learning in the First YearBeyond All ExpectationsWe want to hear from you! This episode of the PBL Simplified Podcast features guest Matt Taylor, who leads the Noble Story Group, a consulting firm that focuses on emotional intelligence-based leadership development in education and nonprofits. Matt's “Why” He had an epiphany while observing both urban district schools and charter schools that they either had teachers with great technical and instructional skills, but unhappy students and teachers or they were happy places where students weren't being challenged. He believes the “sweet spot” is a place where adults and kids feel connected and challenged. His executive coaching training grounded in emotional intelligence changed his life and gave him a framework to address his observations. He seeks to create the conditions for learning and thriving for individuals, teams, and learning communities. The Value of Executive Coaching Executive coaching helps build competencies, not skills. It focuses on the “below the surface” aspects, like beliefs and mindsets, that affect competency. Coaching helps identify roadblocks that training alone can't address, like being conflict-averse. Coaching helps leaders shift deep-seated habits based on core values. It empowers individuals to find their own solutions. It creates a ripple effect, enabling leaders to coach their teams. Success Story: The Second-Year Principal A high-achieving assistant principal, promoted to principal, struggled with delegation. Coaching revealed her underlying beliefs: She felt the need to prove herself, to be liked, to not overburden others, and that this was what leadership entailed. This led to her disempowering her team and hindering their growth. By connecting her actions to her core value of developing people, she found the motivation to change. She learned to self-coach, interrupting her old patterns and reminding herself of her true goal. The Five Square Method This coaching process is based on the four dimensions of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. It emphasizes that 75% of leadership happens internally. Leaders must understand their own values, mindsets, and potential obstacles before engaging others. Social awareness, particularly empathy, is key to understanding others' perspectives and choosing effective engagement strategies. A fifth square, “core values,” was added to highlight their importance in guiding leadership decisions. The Importance of Listening Executive coaching involves the coach listening 70% of the time. This allows the person being coached to process information and find their own insights. Expertise for School Leaders The most important expertise for school leaders is being the “learning leader.” This means embodying a growth mindset, fostering relational trust and belonging, and balancing challenge and care for adults as well as students. Launching a Vision Connect the vision to your core values. Make it a shared vision by listening to and incorporating your team's aspirations. View implementing the vision as adaptive change, involving the people affected in the solution. Focus on the common ground of shared values and goals. Opportunities in the Future of Education Shift from short-term fixes to long-term strategies that address teacher and leader retention. Prioritize creating a supportive and challenging learning community for adults. Recognize the contagious nature of emotions: Adults' engagement in learning will inspire students. Parting Advice This work is a marathon, not a sprint: Take care of yourselves and each other. Build a strong team that provides both support and challenge. Maintain hope and belief in your collective ability to overcome challenges. Call to Action Don't go it alone. Seek support through coaching or masterminds. This is certainly not the case for my guests Alex and Marta from Barcelona. They contend that many young people are passionate about global issues, and are eager and enthusiastic for opportunities to be part of the solution. As high school students, they identified a challenge for young people in getting connected with NGOs, and other organizations that lead impactful, sustainable work in our communities. They, along with their colleagues at HelpUp, decided to take action and do something about this. Episode Notes: -High Tech High- PBL Based Leader -International Educator to move from teacher focused to student focused learning. -Moving from sage on the stage to the guide on the side. Where do you start? Look at the physical environment first. Eliminating the ‘front' of the classroom and teacher desk, which changes the dynamics in the room. It makes any space in the room a learning space. -Have students help in the redesign process around what their needs are, the environment dictates what the learning looks like. Shared decision making is pivotal. -Giving voice and choice, involving the students within each portion of the learning process. -Lead with questions- student generated or open ended? -Encouraging student independence - it does not come overnight, structures need to be put into place over time. -Project Based Learning - student driven - foster that level of independence with critical thinking with support and then slowly take some of those supports away. -Make things highly visual in your classroom - even progression within learning. -Classroom culture that encourages students to ask questions, explore, and find inquiry within their own learning. -How do I set up an environment that fosters that type of inquiry? Work to gather and group questions together and gauge interest so you can structure accordingly. Start with the student at the center of the lesson. -Don't lead with content, lead with inquiry. What is an open ended challenge you can present? What is meaningful to them? How can you scaffold their learning by addressing that inquiry? -Rigor - having high expectations for student learning - have to teach them to not rely on us as much. It is not about jumping and checking boxes. It has to be led by wonder and inquiry. -Try to eliminate teacher time in the front of the room. How can you reach the same end without the teacher being the main focus? Have students present their learning or share out. It is a great formative assessment. -How can they articulate their learning in a way that is meaningful to them? -Coaching means reaching your own identified personalized goals. -A mentor or a coach will always be my saving grace in education. Reach out as you need someone to coach you through. Shift models are so important and have made a world of difference and have brought back the joy! -Find your mentor or your coach. Will AI-powered chatbots soon become students' most trusted advisors? In this episode of Your AI Injection, host Deep Dhillon chats with Andrew Magliozzi, CEO of Mainstay, about AI-driven student support. Andrew shares how AI-powered coaches can proactively nudge students to stay on track with everything from filing financial aid forms to meeting academic deadlines. But what happens when students need deeper conversations about their future? The two explore how innovations like AI-driven text messages helped boost one school's graduation rates by ~11% and why students often trust bots with personal questions they might never ask an advisor. They also dive into the delicate balance between automation and human intervention, the ethical concerns of AI in education, and what the future of advising—and education as a whole—might look like.Learn more about Andrew here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewmagliozzi/and Mainstay here: https://www.linkedin.com/company/heymainstay/Check out some more of our related podcast episodes:The Potential of AI in Revolutionizing Personalized Tutoring with Brent BeckThe Power of AI in Project-Based Learning with Bob LenzAI for Corporate Curriculum Development and Democratizing Education with Anna Talerico

Ashley Green is a versatile educator with 19 years of experience as a language arts teacher, curriculum coordinator, and principal. She is the owner of Green Tree Educational Solutions, a consulting agency in Mississippi dedicated to helping individuals and organizations achieve their full potential. She also serves as an adjunct professor, training and preparing future educators. Green's "why" is to help people, including teachers, students, and leaders, reach their full potential. Keys to a Successful School Turnaround Green outlines three keys to successfully turning around a school: Communication: Clearly communicate how initiatives, like PBL, will function, including components, location, participants, etc. Modeling and Monitoring: Leaders should model the desired behaviors and monitor progress to ensure implementation. Correcting and Celebrating: Provide feedback and support by correcting mistakes and celebrating successes. CMC Squared Coaching Model Green's CMC Squared model (Communication, Model, Monitor, Celebrate or Correct) provides a framework for successful implementation of initiatives. Success Story: Increasing Student Engagement Green shares a success story about working with a fifth-grade ELA teacher to increase student engagement. The strategies included: Small group work: Implementing small group activities three times a week to provide more opportunities for student engagement. Background knowledge: Frontloading instruction with background knowledge to create an equitable playing field for all students. SAC Procedure: Utilizing the SAC (Scan, Annotate, Comprehend, and Show what you know) procedure to activate active reading skills and encourage student exploration of texts. Obstacles to School Turnaround Green identifies two major obstacles to turning around schools: Buy-in: Getting leaders to trust the process and buy into the proposed changes. Vision: Many leaders lack a clear vision for their school, which hinders progress. Overcoming Obstacles Green suggests strategies for overcoming buy-in and vision obstacles: Surveys and Interviews: Conduct surveys and individual interviews with stakeholders to gather information and understand needs. Retreats and Team Building: Host retreats and team-building activities to foster collaboration and build relationships. Shared Beliefs: Facilitate sessions for teachers to establish shared beliefs and values, creating a sense of ownership and accountability. Advice for Educators on Their PBL Journey Trust your inner child: Remember the importance of fun and engaging learning experiences for students. Prioritize students: Ensure students are at the forefront of all initiatives. Activate the three C's: Challenge students, make them curious, and show them that you care. Do you have a topic to suggest or insight to share? Text me.When launching project-based learning initiatives, school leaders often ask teachers to create resources from scratch or modify existing curricula. While this might seem cost-effective, it's actually compromising both teacher effectiveness and student outcomes. This episode explores why teachers shouldn't create project-based learning resources from scratch and reveal a concerning trend I've observed while working with schools. Podcast Summary: This episode provides three practical strategies for school administrators to gain momentum for project-based learning (PBL) in their schools. The three strategies are: Get started today. This means taking steps like visiting schools with successful PBL programs, engaging in book studies about PBL, or listening to podcasts on PBL for administrators. When visiting other schools, administrators should bring along key stakeholders like assistant principals, teachers, community partners, parents, and school board members. Create a grassroots movement. Instead of a top-down mandate, a grassroots movement encourages teachers to embrace PBL and advocate for it. A PBL Learning Team or Leadership Team can be created to visit PBL schools, receive training, and implement PBL in their own classrooms. By showcasing successful PBL implementation within their own school, these teams can inspire other teachers to adopt PBL. Design Days can be utilized to visit model schools, build three-year plans, and receive coaching for successful implementation. Provide robust training. Teachers need at least three days of intensive training with follow-up coaching to effectively implement PBL. Training should emphasize authentic PBL, where students solve real-world problems and develop essential employability skills. Authentic PBL engages students and teachers more deeply and leads to more meaningful learning experiences. Key Takeaways: Don't delay in taking action to bring PBL to your school. Foster a grassroots movement among your staff to create buy-in and enthusiasm for PBL. Invest in robust and authentic PBL training for your teachers to ensure successful implementation. Call to Action: Start taking steps to implement PBL in your school today, even if it's just small steps. Consider attending a PBL training or workshop. Visit schools that have successful PBL programs. Kim Mishkin is here to shed light on Project-Based Learning, an education model that encourages kids to explore, problem-solve, and collaborate in ways that tap into their natural curiosity and interests. In this episode we explore: - What Project-Based Learning (PBL) is and how it differs from the standard American education model. - The origins of the PBL model and what current research reveals about its efficacy for educating kids? - Why allowing children to help shape the direction of their curriculum reinforces their motivation to learn and fosters curiosity. - How core academic subjects like reading, writing, and math are covered with a PBL approach. - Will kids who have been educated in a PBL elementary and middle-school be able to successfully transition to a standard American academic high-school or college environment? - Ways parents can integrate elements of the PBL approach into everyday life, helping to build critical thinking and curiosity in their children, even outside a PBL school. If you're curious about alternative education models or looking for ways to inspire a love of learning in your child, this conversation is packed with insights you won't want to miss! In this episode, I sit down with Dorman Vick to dive into the transformative power of vocational education, especially in the welding industry. We start by discussing the importance of hands-on learning and how it keeps students engaged and passionate about the trade. Dorman shares his experiences in building a successful welding program, highlighting the need for modern equipment and innovative teaching methods to meet the demands of today's workforce. One of the key themes we explore is the critical role of mentorship. Dorman and I talk about how personal development and mentorship can shape the next generation of skilled tradespeople, preparing them not just for jobs but for life. We also delve into the cultural shift needed to truly value vocational education and the challenges vocational programs face, from class sizes to funding and on-site training opportunities. Dorman's unique perspective as someone who transitioned from a military background to education adds depth to our conversation. He emphasizes the importance of teaching life skills, fostering passion in students, and creating comfortable learning environments where they can thrive. We also touch on the growing skills gap in the industry and the necessity of equipping students with both technical and soft skills to succeed. Throughout our discussion, we share inspiring success stories, including women breaking barriers in welding, and talk about the role of technology and social media in making vocational education more accessible and relevant. It's an eye-opening conversation that underscores why skilled trades are vital for the future of our workforce and the energy sector.
