In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton tackle a frustrating reality that many officers face—being discriminated against simply for wearing the badge (Amazon Affiliate). In today's climate, law enforcement officers often find themselves unfairly judged in both professional and personal settings. Whether it's a store refusing service, a family member making anti-police comments, or people automatically assuming you're corrupt, these experiences can be frustrating, isolating, and even infuriating. So, how do you handle these situations without letting them eat away at you? In this episode, we discuss five real examples of discrimination against police officers and five ways to combat it with confidence and professionalism. 1. Understanding Why This Happens The anti-police narrative has been fueled by media bias, political agendas, and misinformation. Many people judge officers based on headlines, personal biases, or past experiences with authority. Unfortunately, this often leads to officers being treated unfairly in situations where they shouldn't have to justify their profession. 2. Five Common Examples of Discrimination Against Police Officers 1. Being Denied Service or Treated Poorly at Businesses Example: A restaurant refuses to serve uniformed officers or intentionally provides bad service because of their profession. Why It's a Problem: Officers deserve basic respect as customers, yet many face hostility in public spaces. 2. Friends or Family Making Anti-Police Comments Example: A family member constantly shares anti-police rhetoric or refuses to engage with you because of your job. Why It's a Problem: It creates tension and division within personal relationships, making officers feel unwelcome in their own families. 3. Social Media Backlash or Harassment Example: Posting about your career or a pro-law enforcement stance results in negative comments, online attacks, or even doxxing. Why It's a Problem: Officers have the right to express themselves, but many face hostility online simply for their profession. 4. Struggles in the Dating World Example: Some people refuse to date a cop because they assume officers are aggressive, untrustworthy, or emotionally unavailable. Why It's a Problem: These false stereotypes limit social opportunities and make building relationships harder. 5. Workplace Discrimination from Leadership or Peers Example: Officers who stand up for their values or voice concerns about policies are sometimes ostracized, overlooked for promotions, or retaliated against. Why It's a Problem: It creates a toxic work environment and discourages good officers from staying in the profession. 3. Five Ways to Combat Discrimination with Strength and Confidence 1. Stay Professional and Choose Your Battles Solution: If a business denies service, document the incident and choose whether to address it through official channels or walk away. Why It Works: Keeps you above the drama while ensuring accountability when needed. 2. Educate, But Don't Argue Solution: If family or friends misunderstand police work, offer facts and personal insights instead of debating. Why It Works: Informed discussions can shift misconceptions, but arguing rarely changes minds. 3. Set Boundaries Online and in Personal Life Solution: Be mindful of what you post, block toxic people, and don't engage in unnecessary social media battles. Why It Works: Protects mental health and personal safety while avoiding unnecessary conflicts. 4. Find a Strong Support System Solution: Surround yourself with like-minded friends, fellow officers, and supportive communities that respect your profession. Why It Works: Helps reduce stress and reminds you that you're not alone in these experiences. 5. Know When to Walk Away and When to Stand Up Solution: Choose when to push back on discrimination and when it's better to let it go and move forward. Why It Works: Keeps your energy focused on what matters instead of letting negativity drain you. 4. Why Officers Must Stay Resilient in Today's Climate Officers must learn how to navigate unfair treatment without letting it impact their confidence, integrity, or sense of purpose. The best response to discrimination is to remain professional, stay strong, and continue doing the job with honor. 5. Final Thoughts: The Bigger Picture While discrimination against officers is real, it does not define who you are. By staying grounded in your purpose, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and setting boundaries, you can thrive in your career and personal life. Listen now to learn how to handle discrimination with confidence, protect your peace, and continue serving with pride.
Aubrey speaks to Devan Moonsamy, CEO of ICHAF Training Institute, a South African Corporate Training Provider & National Learning Institute, about human rights within the workplace. We often discuss human rights issues in the broader context of our lives, but what about in the workplace? Workplace discrimination isn’t always obvious, it can show up as unequal pay, lack of career growth, or the exclusion of people with disabilities. With so many tools available to create inclusive work environments, why do so many companies still fall short?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Advocating for yourself when experiencing harm in the workplace can be hard and confusing, but it can also open the door to something so much better. In this episode, Whitney sits down with Noris Chavarria, a queer, gay, Latino, consultant and coach to discuss Noris's experience with self-advocacy.In this powerful episode, Noris shares his experience feeling subject to harassment based on his sexual orientation and documented new diagnosis of ADHD. Facing an environment fraught with bullying, and where is request for reasonable accommodations were denied, Noris was compelled to take legal action and eventually leave his job.Noris opens up about the emotional toll of dealing with his workplace, the barriers he faced in seeking legal remedies, and the journey towards his newfound mission: empowering others who face similar struggles. He discusses the complexities of navigating employment law, even in California, and the importance of support programs for those feeling marginalized and unheard.Listeners will gain invaluable insights into Noris's path to advocacy and entrepreneurship through his consulting and coaching business, Noris Knows, which serves LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color. Whitney and Noris also explore the broader implications of systemic workplace issues on mental and physical health and the importance of recognizing personal autonomy. This episode is part of our anti-discrimination mini-series and shines a light on the lack of legal protections in workplace bullying cases and the various barriers people experience when attempting to find support and legal protection. Although what Noris experienced may not amount to legal harassment or discrimination (we don't know), his experiences led to workplace trauma that had very real impact on his health, mental health, and his capacity to work in the environment. Part of the trouble is meeting a legal standard of proof required to show harassment or discrimination occurred. For this reason, when possible it can be helpful to speak to advocates and attorneys to learn about how we can best support ourselves, and to get help navigating these systems. Make sure to tune in to episodes 49 and 51 to learn more about how advocates and attorneys can help, and what to do to prepare for this type of experience. We're kicking off the second season of the Curl Code by sharing a vulnerable, illuminating, sometimes hilarious and alwways incredible conversation from the launch party of the show last year. This live event brought together curlies and non-curlies of different generations and backgrounds to discuss lived experiences of having curly hair. Regardless of what else we might not have in common, we discovered funny and not-so-funny stories of hair trauma, struggle, and finally, embrace that revealed to us the things we share, and helped us learn about what's changed--and still needs to change--to allow all of us to live as our most authentic selves and embrace our curly crowns. Our non-curly allies helped us understand their own experiences and limitations, and even our wavy and swavy friends got a little reassurance that there is a place for them in the the curl universe too! This conversation exemplifies the openness, authenticity and healing we stand for in this show, and at the Curly Oasis salon and education platform. We hope you'll find solidarity, companionship, and discovery in this show, and realize that whatever you hair trauma or curl experience may be, you are not alone! Justice for Reyzl: Standing up to LGBTQ Workplace Discrimination Host: Noah Parrish, Gender Justice Communications Director Guest: Brittany Stewart, Gender Justice Senior Staff Attorney In August 2024, Gender Justice and co-counsel Wanta Thome PLC filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Academy of Holy Angels, a Catholic high school in Richfield, Minnesota, and the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis after they effectively terminated Reyzl Grace, a staff librarian, when she came out as trans. Reyzl Grace's story highlights the importance of ensuring that no employer in Minnesota has carte blanche to discriminate against employees simply because of who they are. We believe the school violated the Minnesota Human Rights Act (MHRA) by refusing to allow Grace, who served as a secular librarian at the school, to reapply for her position on the basis of gender identity and sex. While the MHRA does permit limited exemptions on religious grounds, the Legislature never intended for these exemptions to apply to secular employees. In this episode of The Gender Justice Brief, Reyzl Grace's attorney, Brittany Stewart, outlines our case seeking justice for her: Background and context on Reyzl Grace's case Grace v. Today, we sit down with author and senior fellow at the Claremont Institute Jeremy Carl to discuss his new book, "The Unprotected Class: How Anti-White Racism Is Tearing America Apart." The latest episode of the Lieb Cast delves into the impact of social media on workplace discrimination, highlighting how posts by prominent figures like Bill Ackman and Elon Musk, questioning Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, may inadvertently encourage discriminatory behavior. They explore the potential ramifications for vulnerable, lower-income workers, who, lacking clear guidance, might engage in discriminatory practices leading to job loss. The episode also covers the case of Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis, who, after denying same-sex marriage licenses in 2015, faces a $260,000 legal fee. Additionally, the podcast discusses the lawsuit filed by New York City against bus companies for allegedly causing $700 million in damages by transporting migrants from Texas.

(AURN News) – In a candid revelation, former legendary WTHR-TV main news anchor Andrea Morehead is sharing her journey as a Black woman in the television industry, shedding light on the challenges she faced during her 21-year tenure at the Indianapolis station. Morehead has launched a new YouTube series titled "My Silence is Not for Sale," where she courageously details instances of gaslighting, hostile treatment, abuse, and more, with the aim of empowering others who may have faced similar experiences. “I really feel the weight of my traumatic past, finally being overshadowed by my sincere desire to use this form to save others,” she said in the first episode. “I know there are millions of people who are exhausted, we are tired of being exhausted by toxicity in the workplace. In fact, when it was time to return to the workplace full-time post-COVID, many of us were like, 'No thank you,' because maybe you realize you didn't want to put up with the microaggressions, the gaslighting, the lies, the disparate treatment in the workplace,” she added. The veteran journalist, renowned for her Emmy and Murrow awards, addresses the weight of her traumatic past in the series' inaugural episode. Amidst the revelations, Morehead reflects on the broader issue of workplace toxicity. The former news anchor took legal action against WTHR and its owner, Tegna, filing a discrimination lawsuit in 2021. By sharing her story, she underscores and sheds light publicly on the systemic challenges faced by far too many Black professionals in the local television news industry. Through "My Silence is Not for Sale," Morehead emerges as a powerful advocate for workplace equity, aiming to inspire change and provide a platform for those who have been silenced. We found some investment backing, and jumped into it!” [13.26] The vision behind Sylena's first business, and its successful sale to Flexport. “Customs in Canada are so far behind, and we went through the journey of what would it take to start digitizing and creating an environment where we could re-employ amazing women who weren't staying in the industry, because it didn't support their family and work/life balance.” [17.46] Sylena's experience working with Flexport, the next steps in her career journey, and her long-time business partnership with Cindy Christensen. “I love building start-ups, I'm passionate about scaling them.” [19.59] How and why supply chain has changed for women in the last decade, and the work that still needs to be done. “Women in the supply chain industry spend so much of our careers fighting for any breath in the room… and it used to be that there were so few women in that room that it was so hard to partner up with other women because there was so little air to take.” [22.26] From finance to the military to supply chain, Sylena's experience across multiple male-dominated environments, and her experience of strong, supportive women. “Every room I've ever been in as an adult has been male-dominated… it's better now, but it's nowhere near as good as it needs to be.” [25.15] The industry areas that Sylena would like to see changed for women. “The industry doesn't create opportunities… there is no unifying place where continued education and promotion opportunities exist.” “We spent so long finding any available space in that room, we really haven't, as women in this industry, embraced the opportunity to step in and take the space we deserve.” [30.40] What the future holds for Sylena. “If you look at everybody else that's trying to solve supply chain from a tech perspective, they're all looking at it from a freight perspective. But the only one unifying factor about supply chain… is that every shipment touches a customs broker.” [32.49] Sylena's words of advice for leadership, and women in the industry. “Find community first, and lean into it.” [35.35] What excites Sylena the most about the future of supply chain, and her advice for jumping in. [38.11] Sylena's biggest top tip for women in supply chain. RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: You can connect with Sylena over on LinkedIn. Discrimination in the workplace is a pattern of behavior that singles out an employee or group of employees for unfair and/or unequal treatment based on specific protected characteristics. Harassment is unpleasant and unwanted behavior that is deliberate and consistent. There are Federal, State, and local laws that protect certain classes of individuals from unwanted harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Let's face it: Work can be complicated. Layoffs are widespread, and workplace issues like harassment and discrimination can be daunting. But then there are also less scandalous topics like non-compete agreements and new offer contracts. This week on LEAVE YOUR MARK, I talk with Peter Rahbar, my friend and personal attorney, and we unpack all of this. Peter is the founder of The Rahbar Group and has represented individuals and major companies in nearly every aspect of employment law and other workplace issues. After almost twenty years of representing major international corporate clients in high-profile matters, including over a decade as the chief employment attorney for Hearst, Peter has established a boutique employment practice representing individuals, including C-Suite executives, media personalities, and other professionals working in finance, media, sports, real estate, fashion, and tech. Peter has a unique perspective on workplace dynamics and trends due to the broad scope of his practice. He has real-time insight into hiring trends through his extensive experience in the negotiation and drafting of employment agreements, talent agreements, and separation agreements, and his specialty of representing individuals in negotiating non-competition agreements. Peter is also a tireless advocate for equal treatment in the workplace – representing and advising individuals in the negotiation, investigation, litigation, and mediation of employment disputes, including employment discrimination and harassment claims. Peter is based in New York City. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Pete and I dive into every major employment law issue in this episode and cover their do's and don'ts. This is the episode you will save and play on repeat. The big topics we cover are layoffs, non-compete agreements, pay transparency laws, how to deal with harassment in the workplace, and so much more. *This episode will provide commentary and tactical career advice from a workplace expert. It is not intended to provide legal advice or counsel.
Are people treated differently based on whether they have legal representation or not? Have you ever experienced workplace discrimination? Would you speak up? Have you ever been terminated and felt maybe you could have won a legal battle? Today's guest Timi Ogundipe owns up to his mistakes and loves it when people underestimate him! He's a three-time suicide survivor, overcome jail, and just launched a new business! Better Call Daddy: The Safe Space For Controversy. Timi's bio My name is Timi Ogundipe. I am the founder and CEO of Safe Resell. I was born in Nigeria and moved to the states (Minnesota) when I was 3 years old. I haven't been back since then but have the desire to go back, however, it is costly and time is limited for me. I am married with 2 kids and live in Minneapolis MN. I have a 9-year-old son, who turns 10 in September from a previous relationship, and my wife and I have a 2-year-old daughter that thinks she is 14. I grew up in a northern suburb of Minneapolis called New Brighton, and lived there from 1st grade all the way until I graduated HS. I have an older brother who is the Co-Founder of Civic Eagle and recently raised a Series A round of $3,000,000. I also have a younger sister. My parents own a very successful home healthcare business in Minnesota as well, (my sister works for them). Growing up, I sucked at school (barely graduated honestly), was a rebel, fought damn near every day, drank on most non-game days, and dabbled into some drugs (marijuana and ecstasy). In HS, I was in track and football for 4 years, basketball for 3, and wrestling for 1. My personality was (and still is) unique. I didn't take any shit from anyone, (literally, if someone stepped on my shoes accidentally and didn't apologize, they got a fist to their jaw), but would also whoop anyone who was bullying someone. I hated bullies and was known for bullying the bullies. My brother was always the golden child, and I hated being compared to him, seriously, hated it. I don't think using cuss words is a bad thing. Why the fuck does a word, that have real meaning (or slang) be considered bad? I say, fuck that shit, cuss all you want, just as long as it isn't at me, and you understand potential consequences. The summer before I started HS, I attended a party, and that night, was the first time I drank alcohol, smoked weed, and had sex… I was 13 (my birthday is in August). I also have over 80 partners in my life. I stopped counting when I hit 81. My ex-wife was #69. I know because I started a competition with a friend in college…. We both loved fighting, had a unique upbringing and both our names starts with T and we were known as TNT because, we decided that if one of us wasn't bringing a girl back with us, we were fighting. It got to the point where people would leave if we were at a party. People even called us for fi9ghting assistance or when they got jumped. One time, my friend got kicked out of a house party for flirting with the renter's girlfriend, and him and I waited outside in the car until party was over, walked in, and beat up the 5-6 people that were there. Just us 2. Too much detail to get into about my life, but my life also includes, 1. Bringing a gun to school every day and no one knew except one person. 2. Plenty of fights during and after school 3. Plenty of times I cussed out teachers 4. Drinking during school 5. Being shot at/ having guns pointed at me a few times 6. Having mental health issues, unbeknownst to me at that time 7. Going to college for football and getting kicked out 8. Giving up football and college to pursue MMA because, I loved fighting, and can now do it every day in practice and scheduled fights, without getting in legal trouble. 9. Losing vision in my right eye from injury. 10. Moving to California, 8 days after thinking about the option with no place to live, no money, no friends, nothing. I slept on the beach/in my car, for the first 2 weeks I was there. 11. Moving to Houston with my ex-wife (the marriage lasted 9 months before splitting and 11 months before our divorce was finalized. 12. Getting robbed while trying to sell a phone, thus the idea of Safe Resell came about. 13. Bootstrapping SR while working full-time. 14. Completely tearing my ACL and cartilage in my knee, so now I'll need a knee replacement 15. 3 suicide attempts (pills, gun to head, and car). The pills were just aspirin and gave me a badass stomachache and puke everywhere after I passed out for about 30 mins or so. The gun to my head, the safety was on and I didn't the courage to try again. And the last attempt, I was in the car with the garage door closed and the car running, then I heard myself tell me to “get out, your son needs you”. The last attempt was in 2014 I believe, or 2015. Haven't had those thoughts since, but I still have a daily battle with my mental health complexities. 16. Because of the judgment of “Christians” and churchgoers, I do not like going to church or being labeled a Christian. Most Christians are against people being themselves, and I hated having to wear “church clothes” and pay money (offering/tithes). Also, when I got in trouble, I got kicked out my church that I was going to, by the pastor and first lady. I call myself a believer of Christ but will never call myself a Christian until out love-children (children born out of wedlock) and the LGBTQIA+ community are widely accepted. Also, the whole no sex before marriage narrative is bullshit. I won't allow my kids to get married without having sex (unless that's what they really want to do). Because bad sex, forever, will suck. Since finding out about my mental health complexities, which explained the behavior growing up, and of course, being more mature, everyone that knew me in HS and college, has noticed and informed me on how different I am, which I agree on, unless someone threatens or harms my friend and/or family. Now all I want to do is get rich, give my family everything, travel, and help people out. About Safe Resell Safe Resell is a user-to-user marketplace with a focus on safety and integrity. We are the safest user-to-user platform where neighbors can buy and sell new and/or used products. We use a prepayment system where a buyer will pay for an item prior to meeting up with the seller. When buyer prepays, there will be aauthorization hold on their account, similar to how hotels do it upon check in. Upon meeting up, if all looks good, the buyer can complete the purchase, and at that time, we will pull the money from the buyer's account. If the buyer and/or seller, changes their mind, the buyer can notify us to cancel the sale, and the hold will be removed from account within 2 business days. I launched Safe Resell in July of 2019, with the hopes of having the safest platform, so the experience that I went through, of being robbed, won't happen to other people (or occur very minimally). And of course, I want to be a millionaire because I didn't have much growing up, looking back at it, but at the time, it didn't seem that way. I was on free breakfast and lunch until like 10th grade or so, then was on free breakfast/ reduced lunch. The platform is currently down as we are doing a whole revamping of the website and we are relaunching end of summer (info not publicly known yet). If possible, I would like the episode to drop shortly after our relaunch. The platform will be available nationwide.
