In today's episode I am joined with Monica Swanson. Monica and her family live in Hawaii, where she has raised and homeschooled her four boys, three now in college and one twelve year old who loves to golf. Monica also has her own podcast, aptly named the Monica Swanson podcast, and recently published her book “Amazing Kids: Bringing Up Kids Who Love God, Like Their Family and Do the Dishes Without Being Asked”. In today's conversation, Monica and I look at the ways to raise amazing kids and what that means. As a parent, we may ask ourselves “are we doing this thing right?” as guilt and shame boil beneath the surface. Monica comments on the healthy balance we need to have, learning to hear from the Holy Spirit to know when we need to put in more work or to know when we are doing just fine. There's a tendency to lean upon rules and the “do not”s of life, but Monica shares a fun and exciting perspective, leaning on a natural process, one with fewer formulas, and parenting towards instead of against. Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation! You can connect with Monica through Facebook, Instagram, and her website. You can also order her new book! Or her other amazing book about raising boys. FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *When we want our kids to be "amazing" what are we expecting or hoping for? Amazing means a pleasant surprise and full of wonder. Our kids should be full of pleasant surprises and wonder! They should also be rich in character and love God, that is amazing. We should care less about their future career choices or doing well in sports, and more about being this kind of "amazing". This takes less stress off us and them! *If we want to be proud sending these kids into the world, then we must be intentional and focused in our parenting. Do we need to involve them in every after school club and activity, or spend more dinners at home as a family at the table? *It is much easier to depend on rules and parenting against the world, all of the "do not" do's. But it is far more rewarding though harder to lean on a natural process, trusting God with our hearts, and parent towards what we can do. (example: getting outside and doing activities instead of just saying no to screentime) REMEMBER: *There is a healthy pressure which comes from the Holy Spirit, a healthy conviction. Differing the healthy conviction from an unhealthy insecurity takes discernment, a discernment which comes from knowing what God says. We can only know what God says when we spend time with Him both in prayer and in the Word. *Our kids will know if our hearts are not in it. They can see the differences between our words and our actions or if they align. *Be present in this season of parenthood. The time will go by so fast and you will miss the beautiful moments if you're too busy wishing for the next season. The moments you will look back on and miss are not the Instagram moments. The Family Research Center's Director of their Center For Family Studies, Dr. Jennifer Bauwens, details a bill passed by the California State Assembly that allows the state government to take custody of minors seeking what some call "gender affirming care". If/when the state takes custody of the minors, government approval could be granted for hormonal and even potentially surgical transgender treatments even if the child's parents disagree and object. Governor Gavin Newsome has until September 30th to sign or veto the bill. What did you want to be when you grew up? I waffled between professional baseball player and fighter pilot when I was really young. Then I went through a phase of wanting to be an architect or to anchor SportsCenter. The latter of those indirectly led me here, which is at least in the right industry. I'll guarantee none of you ever said you wanted to grow up to be a YouTuber. Or a TikTok star. But those are some of the top answers that children give today to that question. A few years ago, we would laugh. Today, we probably still do, but we shouldn't. An online content creator, or influencer if you will, is a skilled craftsperson whose earning potential in today's world far exceeds that of most of the jobs these kid's parents have. To laugh at them and dismiss that career path because we think it's short-sighted and foolish, only exposes us as being short-sighted and foolish. My friend Arik Hanson had blog post last week that caught my attention. Arik is a social media and public relations consultant, speaker and influencer in his own right based in Minneapolis. He's also one half of Hanson & Hunt, a great PR and communications podcast that is also on the Marketing Podcast Network along with this show. Arik's post last Tuesday was titled, “Will your kids go to school to be professional social media influencers?” I know. Most of you chuckled at the notion. But you shouldn't. I'll tell you more about why in today's commentary. Today's show also features reference to my daughter's young adult book review channel on YouTube and encourages you to add a subscription to my YouTube channel, now including a version of this podcast, so her 200 or so more followers than me can perhaps stop being a source of personal embarrassment. Heh. And we also highlight our first listener voice mail today. Marc Duke, a B2B influencer consultant and all-around CMO brain for hire in Great Britain, had some comments and a question about last week's commentary on influencer consultants. Sunday, July 26, 2020 is the 12th annual National Auntie’s Day—a day for celebrating the special bond between women and their nieces and nephews. It’s an opportunity to highlight the unique and important contribution aunts make to the development of the children in their lives. I’m an aunt and so are many of you, so I’m pleased to welcome the founder of Auntie’s Day and author of Otherhood: Modern Women Finding a New Kind of Happiness, Melanie Notkin, to the program! In our conversation, Melanie and I discuss: · How women of The Otherhood manage their ongoing and currently unmet desire for marriage and family. · The question almost every woman of The Otherhood has asked herself, “Should I settle for a ‘good enough’ guy in order to have children?” · How to handle invasive and insensitive questions/comments about your life e.g. “You must have focused too much on your career!” or “Didn’t you want kids???” · The prevailing, yet inaccurate, assumption that women of The Otherhood delayed marriage and child bearing. · Grieving the loss of the life we’d expected, while embracing the joys of the life we have! Aunties matter! And, despite the fact our lives haven’t played out as planned, we women of The Otherhood, can be assured our nurturing and influence make a profound, positive impact on the children we didn’t create, yet choose to love. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/love-and-life-media/support

LemonAID Warriors is a youth empowerment program that aims to give young people the tools that they need to turn their compassion into action, and raise funds and awareness for causes that they care about Lulu Cerone was an entrepreneur from an early age. At the age of six, she opened her first lemonade stand. At first, she used the money to buy toys or candy. But her mom made a suggestion. Why not use the profits to help someone else? Lulu looked into it and found an animal shelter that needed the funds. “This really crazy thing happened,” Lulu said. “This crazy thing I was doing with my friends actually took on this whole new meaning. It became a lot more fun. My friends and I became more engaged. We felt like what we were doing was meaningful.” Lulu became interested in community service. However, she had a hard time finding opportunities to serve at a young age. Most organizations require volunteers to be 16 to 18 years-old. She found a few opportunities through her school. Her parents tried helping her to find opportunities. Lulu explains, “It’s hard to know how to raise effective global citizens as a parent.” In 2010, when an earthquake struck Haiti, Lulu was ten years old. She says, “That was the first time I was aware of a global tragedy. I remember being online with my mom and looking at pictures of kids whose lives had been completely changed by the earthquake. I really had this strong urge to help.” When Lulu went to school, she challenged the boys to a Boys vs Girls LemonAID fundraising competition. Her fifth-grade class raised just over $4,000 in two weeks. This early success has had a ripple effect. “I found it spinning out of my control really quickly,” Lulu says. She looked back at what worked with the Lemonade stands and came up with bigger idea – PhilanthroParties. A PhilanthroParty is any gathering with a social purpose behind it. Lulu started an organization, LemonAID Warriors to spread this idea of youth empowerment. She wrote a book, PhilanthroParties!: A Party-Planning Guide for Kids Who Want to Give Back. “This is such a simple idea, but people really latched onto it,” Lulu says. “There is power in simplicity.” Lulu has attracted partnerships for her business. She partnered with Mattel and Forever 21. She was recently recognized as a L’Oréal Woman of Worth. She is currently a freshman in collage as she continues to develop her nonprofit. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Lulu Cerone “Growing up, I had a passion for community service.” “Young people can get involved.” “They can do it in fun and simple ways that integrate social action into their social life.” “That’s when I had my first PhilanthroParty.” “It was the first time my friends and I felt like we could be agents of change.” “I did not set out to start a nonprofit organization.” “This is such a simple idea, but people really latched onto it.” “There is power in simplicity.” “LemonAID Warriors is youth-driven and community-based.” “It was incredible being in eighth grade and having Mattel looking to me.” “See yourself as an important agent of change.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: LemonAID Warriors: http://www.lemonaidwarriors.com/ Book: PhilanthroParties!: A Party-Planning Guide for Kids Who Want to Give Back: http://philanthropartiesbook.com L’Oréal Women of Worth:https://www.lorealparisusa.com/women-of-worth.aspx Book: Crazy Good Advice: 10 Lessons Learned from 150 Leading Social Entrepreneurs: https://tonyloyd.com/book
