WealthTech in the Weeds is a series covering the broad yet critical path to financial services. The goal is to get together with industry experts and get into the details of building an effective, productive, coordinated, and comprehensive advice system. Comprehensive advice platforms have been a significant development in wealth management. They streamline portfolio management, optimize returns, and enhance investors' financial efficiency. However, implementing these platforms has its challenges. As technology continues to reshape the industry, the lessons and experiences learned from early adopters provide invaluable insights that significantly impact the industry's future and empower investors to achieve their financial goals. In this episode, Jack is joined by Eric Lordi and Martin Cowley. Eric is the Managing Director at J.P. Morgan and has extensive experience in wealth and asset management. He builds modern wealth management systems that deliver better client outcomes and embraces goals-based investing. Martin is the Chief Product Officer at LifeYield and has more than 14 years of experience building comprehensive wealth management platforms. In his role, Martin oversees product strategy for portfolio rebalancing, tax optimization, and retirement income, using LifeYield's API-first product suite to address a wide range of client needs. Martin has worked with numerous firms to help them integrate and optimize their systems for improved user experience and financial outcomes. Eric and Martin talk with Jack about the challenges, benefits, and lessons learned from building comprehensive advice platforms. They dive into the importance of multi-account management, asset location, and tax optimization in improving clients' financial outcomes. The conversation also touches on the operational aspects of implementing these platforms and the need for integration and coordination across different systems.  In this episode: [02:25] -The challenges and goals of building a modern wealth management system. [04:27] - Lessons Martin learned during the early days of LifeYield. [06:17] - The dynamics of multi-account management. [09:22] - How LifeYield coordinates and optimizes multiple accounts. [12:50] - Asset location and its importance in generating tax efficiency. [15:55] - How asset location adds tax efficiency across different account programs. [20:05] - The operational challenges of implementing asset location. [22:20] - The three types of withdrawals and how they need to operate. [29:22] - The purpose of tax management systems. Quotes [02:54] - "We're currently in a world where lots of products and programs have been built vertically over time. How do you start to think horizontally from an advisor standpoint? The biggest mental shift is just moving from an account-based structure to a relationship-based one." ~ Eric Lordi [10:17] - "Coordinating isn't just about getting the sum of the parts and then working with them. It's about recognizing that some parts fit together better than others." ~ Martin Cowley [14:08] - "Tax management isn't just tax slots. It's the location and having a machine that is not dependent on underlying trading systems but looks across all these things as holdings that we can score anywhere." ~ Eric Lordi [30:47] - "Everything we've done has to be flexible because we are looking across multiple companies and client firms. It doesn't have to all be stitched tightly on day one. Those walls aren't going to break down overnight. So, we're building little tunnels between the silos." ~ Martin Cowley Links  Eric Lordi on LinkedIn Martin Cowley on LinkedIn J.P. Merging the worlds of heavy metal music and cutting-edge technology, Finnish death metal band Lordi has united with leading global technology brand OnePlus to unleash their ferocious new single, Made of Metal. The song, inspired by the OnePlus Nord 4 smartphone's world-first all-metal unibody design in the 5G era, celebrates the recent launch of the device and its upcoming sale on the 8th of August. Exploding onto streaming services from today, the collision of Lordi and OnePlus brings together two titans of their respective industries. Known for their incredible costumes, the most iconic Eurovision Song Contest win this century, and their punishing live performances, the band boasts over half a million monthly listeners on Spotify. An unholy alliance with OnePlus, renowned for their innovative technology and their Never Settle DNA, makes this a match made in heaven HELL. Taking metal to its extremes, the track fuses chainsaw-sharp guitar riffs, stinging keys, and industrial-strength drums to create a Richter-scale rhythm that commands the banging of heads. Lyrics speak to the track's technological inspiration; "Steel hard and screamin' look at me" and "Charged up with power to prevail" reference the OnePlus Nord 4's all-metal unibody design and future-proof capabilities while at the same time celebrating the brand's love of all that is METAL. The anthemic chorus of "Never settle, I am made of metal" delivers an iron-clad earworm that drills itself into the listener's brain. Alongside the song's release, the frightening five-some of Lordi have starred in a behind-the-scenes film. The short film follows the band in the studio as they grapple with the novelty of the first all-metal phone in the 5G era and the staggering capabilities that come with it. Star of the show, Mr Lordi, erupts in rage at the existence of plastic throughout the film, vanishing a plastic bottle within a selfie in a single swipe using the OnePlus Nord 4 'AI Eraser 2.0'. The tagline of 'Never Settle, Made of Metal' rings true as the band unleashed the powerful track, fiercely thrashing their instruments using the phone itself. Loaded with standout features that are metal to the core, the OnePlus Nord 4 is not your standard smartphone. But metal isn't the only revolutionary detail on offer. Key features include: Design 'Made of Metal': The OnePlus Nord 4 has an exceptional design. It's the only all-metal unibody phone of the 5G era, bringing the classic strength and sophistication of aluminium back to the world of smartphones. Revolutionary 5G: This phone breaks a number of barriers with its "True 5G" intelligence thanks to accelerated data speeds and machine learning AI. This makes it the only phone in the world that is made from metal and has uninterrupted HD streaming capabilities. Future-proof Performance: The OnePlus Nord 4 offers more than 1,600 charging cycles, which is over four years of use, with over 80% of its original capacity. Furthermore, the OnePlus Nord 4 will provide four years of Android updates and six years of security updates. AI: The OnePlus Nord 4 features AI tools for productivity and creativity, from AI Summarise that summarises emails (perfect for rockstars who don't have time for admin) to AI Eraser 2.0 which removes unwanted people or items from an image - like anything plastic in Lordi's case. Speed and performance: Speed is key with the OnePlus Nord 4, with a Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 processor with up to 16GB RAM. It also comes with a 5,500 mAh large battery and charges using our SUPERVOOC charging, which means it'll go from 1-100% in just 28 minutes - perfect for a rockstar lifestyle. AquaTouch: AquaTouch display allows the OnePlus Nord 4 to work perfectly even with wet hands, allowing users to search and stream 'Made Of Metal' from the shower. Mr Lordi, Lead Singer of Lordi, said: "M-E-T-A-L. We love metal, and so do OnePlus, which is why we jumped at the challenge of writing and producing a song inspired by the world's onl...

Soul is one of those concepts that is often evoked, but rarely satisfactorily defined. In The Meaning of Soul: Black Music and Resilience Since the 1960s (Duke University Press 2020), Emily J. Lordi takes on the challenge of explaining “soul,” through a book that zooms in and out between sweeping ideas about suffering and resilience in Black culture and fine-grained, close readings of individual performances by soul musicians. Rather than centering big musical gestures and major popular hits, Lordi pays close attention to musical practices like falsetto, ad-libs, and false endings to ground her analysis. She focuses on artists that are some of the most recognizable Black singers in the United States such as Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, and James Brown, but she also spends a lot of time with more obscure figures including Donny Hathaway and Minnie Riperton. She ends the book with a powerful contemplation of how the logic of soul, born in the political and social tumult of the late 1960s, still resonates with some of today's most popular women singers. Emily J. Lordi is an Associate Professor of English at Vanderbilt University. The Meaning of Soul is her third book. In addition to her scholarly work, she is an active cultural critic and music journalist published in venues such as Billboard, The Atlantic, and NPR. Kristen M. Turner is a lecturer in the music and honors departments at North Carolina State University. For the first of our four-part series on the King of Pop, writer, professor and critic Emily Lordi joins Pop Pantheon to help us begin to untangle one of the most knotty legacies in pop history: the story of Michael Jackson. Emily and DJ Louie discuss Michael's extremely strict upbringing, sadistic abuse at the hands of his father Joe, and the creation of The Jackson 5, from playing the Chitlin' Circuit to landing a Motown deal and kicking off one of the greatest single runs in history, beginning with 1969's “I Want You Back.” Next they dig into The Jackson 5's prolific Motown output, the marketing of Michael as a child sensation and how Jacksonmania made the Jacksons into a symbol of post-civil rights promise in America. Finally, they work through the band's rebrand as The Jacksons, their post-Motown work, late '70s comeback and how the group's monumental success set Michael up for solo superstardom. Join us next week for Part 2, in which we will be talking about Michael's early solo work and his breakthrough as a solo star, 1979's Off The Wall. Listen to Pop Pantheon's Michael Jackson Essentials PlaylistJoin Pop Pantheon: All Access, Our Patreon Channel, for Exclusive Content and MoreShop Merch in Pop Pantheon's StoreBuy Tickets to our Dance Party Pop Pantheon Present: Main Pop Girls of '24 in NYC on August 2!Come to Gorgeous Gorgeous Lincoln Center on 7/20 FOR FREE!Come to Gorgeous Gorgeous: Los Angeles at Los Globos in Silver Lake on 7/26Follow DJ Louie XIV on InstagramFollow DJ Louie XIV on TwitterFollow Pop Pantheon on InstagramFollow Pop Pantheon on Twitter

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 23rd of December, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start with Proverbs 28:20:"A faithful man will abound with blessings..."Then we go straight to Ephesians 1:3:"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ..."My wife Jill heard a little quotation from some anonymous person: "If you want pleasant thoughts, count your blessing, not your cash."I want to read you a prayer that was re-written as a song by Jim Reeves, the Farmer and the Lord:While resting the other evening by the side of the roadI saw an old farmer in the field that he just sowedHis face was all brown and wrinkled from the sun and the windAnd he was talking to the Lord just like he'd be talking to a friendWell sir, he said with his voice calm and quietThem corn tassels need stackin' I got no strenght to tie itHad no rain in so long that the fields are mighty dustyAnd it's been so unbearable hot that the kids were even gettin' fussyNow that grass down and the pasture it should be knee highIf we could just have a little shower LordIt might keep the calf from going dryOh but listen to me talking you'd think I wasn't gratefulWhy if you didn't know me so well LordYou'd think I was down right hatefulYou'd think I frogot about that new calf that you sentAnd the money in the mail that took care of the rentMama's cold better and Johnny's home from the navyAnd that good Sunday dinner of chicken and dumplings and gravyAnd that new preacher you sent us Lord he's sure a fine young manWhy he's just convertin' them sinners to beat the bandWell guess I'll mosey on home now LordI won't take no more your timeGuess there's plenty folks here about waitin' to ring your lineEvening to you Lord and watch us over tonightAnd don't you worry about us now Lord'Cause everything is gonna be all rightJesus bless you, and have a lovely day. Goodbye.

Donny Hathaway Live is a soul classic and one of my all-time favorite records ever. We had the good fortune to interview author and cultural critic Emily Lordi in one of our earliest podcasts about her book on this record for the 33 1/3 series. We are proud to feature this episode again — “in case you missed it” — for Black History Month! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
