It has been a long time since we have talked about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this week we have a lot to talk about. And it is more than just the Doomsday trailer and the upcoming Spider-Man movie. On the plus side, it seems like the MCU may be closer to the darker Marvel that people have dreamed about for years. That being said, we also heard that with the last Doctor Strange movie and The New Mutants. Only time will tell, but we are interested in what is happening. We have nothing against toilet humor and low hanging fruit. Troma is responsible for some of our favorite movies. And just generally speaking it is good to have a palette cleanser. Not every movie can be high art or a thrill a minute slasher. Bowels of Hell is a one joke movie. Literally. Every single gag in the Brazilian import is centered around shit. This is not the problem, however. It actually builds well to a pretty cool ending. But the ride there is an arduous one. We say farewell to Jennifer Jason Leigh for now with two more harrowing works: Georgia (1995), written by Leigh's mother, Barbara Turner, and directed by Ulu Grosbard, and Bastard Out of Carolina (1996), directed by Anjelica Huston and based on the semi-autobiographical novel by CSA survivor Dorothy Allison. We talk about the endless ambiguities of Georgia, a rare gripping dramatic work concerned with clashing ideas about art, and Bastard's queer perspective on patriarchal dynamics. Leigh again shows her talent for playing paradoxically resilient, self-destructive women. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto we got to see the brand-new 4K restoration of Letty Lynton, which has not been seen in theatres or by any legal means in the nearly 100 years since the copyright ruling against it. The AI industry spent the week arguing with itself, which is honestly the healthiest thing it's done in years. One coalition led by Nvidia begged regulators not to slow down open AI models, while more than 1,100 AI workers signed another letter asking regulators to do exactly that. Anthropic warned about bioweapons, OpenAI admitted the four-hour workweek isn't happening after all, and Microsoft's Satya Nadella reminded everyone that building your entire business on someone else's AI is a fantastic way to outsource your own brain. In other words, the people selling the future still can't agree on what they're selling, except that you'd better buy it fast.Meanwhile, the AI bubble keeps demanding sacrifices. Patreon, BuzzFeed, and Uber all swung the layoff axe while insisting AI isn't replacing humans... it's just reorganizing them out of a paycheck. Nvidia is floating another three-quarters of a trillion dollars in infrastructure deals that have people muttering "AI subprime mortgage crisis," China has discovered there's money in renting your face to AI companies, and the U.S. is carving data centers out of pollution rules because apparently acid rain is a small price to pay for chatbot dominance.
