I have had Pepper Martin and M Lamar from season 1 on the podcast before, so be sure to check those episodes out as well. HOUR 2: Did Mahomes' deal hurt Lamar Jackson? Joey Zanaboni fights…himself as part of Dojo of Death. Would Goodell have Trotter fired?
M Lamar, the incomparable composer, artist, operatic countertenor, coiner of the term "negrogothic", good friend, and long-time collaborator of mine, graces the live stream to discuss Diamanda Galas' 1990 live record, 'Plague Mass'. Lamar's work spans opera, metal, performance, video, sculpture and installation to craft sprawling narratives of radical becomings. We talk about mourning, the Devil, how Lamar got to know Diamanda, and questions about the definition of the word "avant garde" This stream was our first collaboration since our short-lived 2018 podcast, 'Fluid Exchange'!
I love this show and can't wait for season 2! I cannot recommend this show enough, and I'm not sure why people aren't watching it. It is a great social experiment with relatives of celebrities, I even wrote a paper over the first season for my college class this semester. So find it and watch it, you'll thank me later. This week's episode is part two of my interview with M Lamar, aka X, from Claim to Fame. This part is focused on his time on Claim to Fame, the friendships he's made, and some behind the scenes stories. M Lamar is really interesting to chat with, he has a lot of great things to share and he's a super nice guy. Amara and Pepper's Claim to Fame Drink: Ingredients Tequila Directions Put ice in a glass. Pour in tequila. Enjoy. Logan's Cocktail: Ingredients Diet Coke Jack Daniel's Whiskey Directions Put ice in glass. Add the amount of whiskey you'd like. Add Diet Coke. Stir. Enjoy. I had the pleasure of interviewing M Lamar, aka X, from Claim to Fame. If you haven't watched Claim to Fame, go watch it on Hulu. It's an amazing reality show with relatives of celebrities and you as the viewer get to play along with the contestants in trying to figure out who everyone is related to. It's a show that I tell everyone about but for some reason, people are watching. Friends that I have actually gotten to watch the show really love it, so go check it out. We discussed a show he is loving called Fleishman Is In Trouble, it's an FX show available to stream on Hulu. The show follows Toby Fleishman after he and his wife divorce; we see him navigate parenting and dating and get back in touch with his friends that his wife didn't like. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Claire Danes, Lizzy Caplan, and Adam Brody. Tune in next week for part 2 where we discuss his time on Claim to Fame. Laura also gives us a tease of her upcoming book on historical medical horrors, and how that might connect to SfSx the comic book. //Laura Westengard (she/her/hers) is an Associate Professor of English at the City University of New York where she serves as point person of the Gender & Sexuality Studies concentration and as a board member for CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies. Another special duo episode, this time with Looker interviewing co-host M. Lamar, a composer who works across opera, metal, performance, video, sculpture and installation to craft sprawling narratives of radical becomings. Lamar expounds on being an 8-year-old opera fanatic, individualism and politics in his work, and what it means to be “free”.
For episode 142, we check in with a true original, M Lamar. Born and raised in Mobile, AL and based in Brooklyn, his work is personal, dramatic, confrontational and utterly unique. With an operatic vocal style and deeply personal lyrics, M Lamar has electrified audiences all over the world with his concert length pieces. For this talk, things get a little weird as we discuss growing up in the south, lynching & castration, art school, porn and a whole lot more. Good shit.
Returning from Hawaii to a blizzard has Shonali feeling down. Leave it to Christian to come up with a story about his jacket to cheer her up. The Get Out of A Funk episode starts out with special guest actor & performer Colin Buckingham. Shonali is impressed with Colin's stage combat skills which he has had to use in real life. Do you know what a "half nelson" is? If you want to fight a drunk person "take out their knees." Colin has a achondroplasia which is a form of dwarfism. We discuss labels, entitlement, empathy and privilege. In addition to acting professionally on film and tv, Colin has recently joined the cast of Sleep No More. He is also in a new tv show which he can't tell us anything about. Look for him in Black Magic for White Boys at Tribeca Film Festival pilot series. Our second guest is comedian, writer, actress Selena Coppock. Selena has a popular twitter feed @NYTvows which makes fun of what she calls the "wedding industrial complex." She has written a book and she is currently on a television show called Red Oaks on Amazon, but she is yet to release a comedy album. Well that is until now! Selena has plans is tape her first live comedy album very soon. Make sure you are there! Our last guest is musician & artist M. Lamar. Lamar opens with a performance of "They Took You From Me" from his latest releast "Funeral Doom Spiritual." Originally from Alabama, Lamar has lived as a musician in New York City for the past 10 years. He is a fan of metal music and classical music and has coined himself "Negro gothic devil worshipping free black man in the blues tradition." Find out why and what his mom thinks about that. Lamar comments on how current moments speak to so many other moments of the past, be it police brutality today or being on a slave ship. Lamar recently performed at National Sawdust in Brooklyn. The New York Times wrote about it. Check it out. Christian and Shonali are proud to announce their very first all day We Don't Even Know Variety Fest to happen Sunday April 23 at DCTV, 87 Lafayette Street. Make plans now to join us and our amazing lineup!
Kuriosa: M Lamar är enäggad tvillingbror till transpersonen Laverne Cox, som spelar transkvinnan Sophia Burset i Netflix-serien Orange is the New Black. In which Zac and Sam have an echo chambered (sorry) conversation with composer and multimedia artist M Lamar. Topics include White Supremacy/Guilt, Kobe's Muse, The Devil, Orange Is The New Black, Trejo's Tacos and more. Plus: a Race of Man upset!
Performance artist M. Lamar is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. M. Lamar is a New York city-based composer, musician, performer, multimedia artist, and counter tenor whose work "Negrogothic, a Manifesto" has been featured by The New York Times and the Museum of Modern Art. M. Lamar is smart, funny, and honest. In this conversation, M. Lamar and Chauncey talk about art, creativity, race, sexuality, the movie Django: Unchained, fetishing the black penis, racial violence, lynching, and a range of other topics. Chauncey and M. Lamar also share some personal stories about sex and intimate adventures across the color line. This is a "grown folks" conversation that may not be appropriate for younger listeners. In this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey offers some thoughts on the Oregon mass shooting, ammosexuals, and "men's rights" sad and silly souls. Chauncey also cuts a promo on Ben Carson's betrayal of the Black Freedom struggle and the faux Right-wing outrage about Anthea Butler's wondering if Carson is indeed "coon of the year". And because he can't resist calling out Right-wing dreams of tough guy foolishness and guns, Chauncey also tells (again) his story about his late night street fight with a fiend who wanted to shoot him dead. In this overstuffed with goodness episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, there is also some titillating--funny?--bonus content at the end of the podcast.
