I love Claim to Fame!!! It is such an amazing show and you should all go watch it on Hulu or Mondays at 7pm on ABC. It is hosted by Kevin and Franklin Jonas and is about the relatives of celebrities who try to guess who each other is related to. As a viewer, you get to play along with the contestants. M Lamar, the incomparable composer, artist, operatic countertenor, coiner of the term "negrogothic", good friend, and long-time collaborator of mine, graces the live stream to discuss Diamanda Galas' 1990 live record, 'Plague Mass'. Lamar's work spans opera, metal, performance, video, sculpture and installation to craft sprawling narratives of radical becomings. We talk about mourning, the Devil, how Lamar got to know Diamanda, and questions about the definition of the word "avant garde" This stream was our first collaboration since our short-lived 2018 podcast, 'Fluid Exchange'! 

I love this show and can't wait for season 2! I cannot recommend this show enough, and I'm not sure why people aren't watching it. It is a great social experiment with relatives of celebrities, I even wrote a paper over the first season for my college class this semester. So find it and watch it, you'll thank me later. I had the pleasure of interviewing M Lamar, aka X, from Claim to Fame. If you haven't watched Claim to Fame, go watch it on Hulu. It's an amazing reality show with relatives of celebrities and you as the viewer get to play along with the contestants in trying to figure out who everyone is related to. It's a show that I tell everyone about but for some reason, people are watching. Friends that I have actually gotten to watch the show really love it, so go check it out. We discussed a show he is loving called Fleishman Is In Trouble, it's an FX show available to stream on Hulu. The show follows Toby Fleishman after he and his wife divorce; we see him navigate parenting and dating and get back in touch with his friends that his wife didn't like. In Part 2 of my conversation with Gothic Queer Culture writer Laura Westengard, we get into BDSM as both haunting and time travel, and take a close look at the contemporary queer performance artists M Lamar, Zackary Drucker and Cassils. Lamar expounds on being an 8-year-old opera fanatic, individualism and politics in his work, and what it means to be “free”.

For episode 142, we check in with a true original, M Lamar. Born and raised in Mobile, AL and based in Brooklyn, his work is personal, dramatic, confrontational and utterly unique. With an operatic vocal style and deeply personal lyrics, M Lamar has electrified audiences all over the world with his concert length pieces. Lamar.  Lamar opens with a performance of "They Took You From Me" from his latest releast "Funeral Doom Spiritual."  Originally from Alabama, Lamar has lived as a musician in New York City for the past 10 years.  He is a fan of metal music and classical music and has coined himself "Negro gothic devil worshipping free black man in the blues tradition."   Find out why and what his mom thinks about that. Performance artist M. Lamar is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. M. Lamar is a New York city-based composer, musician, performer, multimedia artist, and counter tenor whose work "Negrogothic, a Manifesto" has been featured by The New York Times and the Museum of Modern Art. M. Lamar is smart, funny, and honest. In this conversation, M. Lamar and Chauncey talk about art, creativity, race, sexuality, the movie Django: Unchained, fetishing the black penis, racial violence, lynching, and a range of other topics.  Chauncey and M. Lamar also share some personal stories about sex and intimate adventures across the color line.  This is a "grown folks" conversation that may not be appropriate for younger listeners.  In this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey offers some thoughts on the Oregon mass shooting, ammosexuals, and "men's rights" sad and silly souls.
