“Sentient object romance” is an increasingly popular erotica genre in which humans get ravished by inanimate objects that come to life. Some of the most wonderfully absurd titles I’ve seen in this area include “Glazed by the Gay Living Donuts” and “This Pumpkin Spice Latte Gets Me Off.” In today’s show, we’re going to explore the appeal of sentient object romance with an author who has published dozens of books in this area. I am joined by Chuck Tingle, a USA Today bestselling author, two-time Hugo Award finalist, and Bram Stoker Award nominee. He is a mysterious force of energy behind sunglasses and a pink mask. He is also an anonymous author of romance, horror, and fantasy. Chuck writes to prove love is real, because love is the most important tool we have when resisting the endless cosmic void. Some of the topics we dive into include: What do people find appealing or arousing about sentient objects? Why are some people attracted to objects in real life? How does attraction to objects intersect with neurodiversity? What’s the political subtext behind sentient object romance? You can check out Chuck’s website to learn more about his work, and check out all of his books here. Got a sex question? Music is undeniably a huge part of what makes video games special, both individually and on an industry-wide level. Not only is no gaming award show complete without a gong for the year's best soundtrack, but even the Proms have started acknowledging that video game scores have come a long way since the 8-bit days (without throwing any shade on chiptune, a legitimate genre in and of itself with some stone-cold classics). That's probably why, from huge AAAs to smaller indies, music can account for a significant chunk of any game's budget — and it's definitely worth the investment. For this episode, the Indieventure trio have pooled our vinyl collection to talk about some of our personal favourite indie game music highlights. I know you guys say you love long show notes but there's seriously no way I'm going to be able to list every track we talk about here — which is why we've put together [a YouTube playlist] that should cover everything instead! A quick overview, though, sees us talking about the music from games including Balatro, Bombrush Cyberfunk, Braid, Celeste, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Dear Esther, Death's Door, Dicey Dungeons, Disco Elysium, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Fields of Mistria, Firewatch, Hades, Hades II, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Hollow Knight, Hotline Miami, Hypnospace Outlaw, Journey, Kentucky Route Zero, Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp, Minecraft, No Straight Roads, Paradise Killer, Pizza Tower, Pyre, Return of the Obra Dinn, Stardew Valley, A Tower Full of Cats, Trombone Champ, Undertale, Unravel, and We Happy Few. If you'd like to hear every track we discuss in this episode in its entirety, we've added them all to a convenient YouTube playlist that you can find here. During the course of this chat we also promise you a couple of specific links, so go here for Bombrush Cyberfunk soundtrack memes, and here for one of the Ace Attorney x Danganronpa musical mashup channels on YouTube that Rebecca (and now Rachel too) is so very fond of.   Finally, as ever, are our current hyperfixations! Rebecca has discovered an accidentally awesome double-bill of horror novels with a timely social message in Chuck Tingle's Bury Your Gays and Grady Hendrix's The Final Girl Support Group; Liam's been having a whimsical time in recently-released indie platformer The Plucky Squire; and Rachel is having a moment with girly pop in general, and Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter in particular, thanks to the recent VMAs award show.   Our music, meanwhile, was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss how narrator André Santana skillfully performs Chuck Tingle's thrilling Hollywood horror novel. Screenwriter Misha Byrne has just received an ultimatum from the studio executives — their algorithm says to kill off his beloved queer TV characters, or else. Misha refuses, and Santana captures Misha's initial angry exasperation, then his escalating terror as he suddenly faces deadly characters from his horror films. Scripts of certain mysterious scenes are performed by a full cast of authors. It's both a spine-tingling horror story and a moving exploration of queer identity, humanity, and storytelling.  Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. It's time for tea and scones with Chuck Tingle as we discuss how existing is an arrogant act against the forces of the infinite, why it's horror rather than comedy which warms his heart, how he used social media to find a publisher for Camp Damascus (and why that technique probably won't work for you), how to write horror about a gay conversion camp without retraumatizing in an already traumatizing world, the differences between cathartic horror and grueling horror (and why he's more interested in the former), the intriguing comment his copyeditor made about a reference to Superman, which comics subgenre occupies the most space on his bookshelves, the five creators who've most influenced him (and my encounter with one of them during the '70s), how art is more than what's between the covers of a book or within the frame of a painting, what most people get wrong about the term "high concept," and much more.

Hello, dear listeners!   I wanted to give you all an update about the show. To whit: I'm taking a bit of a break. The last five seasons have been incredible, and season six has been and will continue to be.   Tales from the Trunk is in no way ending. We will be back on September 20th, when I'll be talking to T. Kingfisher.   In the mean time, here are some of the things that I have been enjoying from the wider media landscape:   A podcast: Friends at the Table – their eighth season, Palisade, is coming to a close right now, and it has been a Ride. A book: Bury Your Gays, by Chuck Tingle – you already know how much I loved Camp Damascus, and it should come as no surprise that the good doctor's follow-up is every bit as incredible. A TV show: Hunter × Hunter (2011) – Just a fantastic shōnen anime. And a musical twofer: Chappel Roan – come on. I'm queer. She writes good pop hooks. Suggested tracks: “Pink Pony Club” and “My Kink is Karma” Porter Robinson – if you like bouncy but also emotional EDM, give him a go. Suggested tracks: “Knock Yourself Out XD” and “Shelter”   Thanks again for your support over the years, and I look forward to returning in two months with even more amazing interviews with incredible guests.
