It's a good thing ANOHNI and I decided to leave the cameras turned off for the interview included in episode 118 of the LSQ podcast, because there were moments when she was talking --about her creative process, about using her voice and her music as a survival strategy, about what it felt like to grow up as a trans femme amidst the violence of patriarchy -- that I was nearly in tears, so moved by the way she described her experience. And since crying while interviewing is as cringe as "crying in baseball," it was a relief not to be seen in those moments. It was fascinating to hear ANOHNI's story of discovering her musical spirit as a child, motivated by a desire to reveal feminine emotion and power in a way that she felt her mother was not allowed to, and to learn how she developed her creative process from there. ANOHNI talks about drawing inspiration from artists such as Kate Bush, Boy George, Marc Almond, Alison Moyet, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Diamanda Galas and more, and how she has learned to adapt musical forms to suit her voice (both the literal voice and the symbolic voice). She also shares about her relationship with her mentor, the late Lou Reed, how greatly he encouraged her early in her career, and what it was like to recently perform some of his music live for the first time since he passed. You can keep up with ANOHNI here. This is also the first video episode of the LSQ podcast, with awesome illustrations and animation crafted by Jess Rotter and Andrew Deselm. Thanks to them for the wonderful work!

Hosted by Eric Holmberg of Reel to Reel Ministries, Hell's Bells present a 5-part warning of the battle for your teen's soul as the foul forces of Satan infect the music of Celtic Frost, King Diamond, Diamanda Galas, Current 93, and George Michael. Interview by Kris PetersAustralian extreme metal outfit The Amenta recently released a brutal album called Plague Of Locus, boasting an assortment of cover songs that have inspired the band and their music. The selection of bands paid homage to has a number of surprises amongst some expected tributes, ranging from local black metal bands like Nazxul and Lord Kaos to alternative acts such as Alice In Chains, Diamanda Galas and Killing Joke. It is an eclectic and broad list of artists, going a long way to giving us a better insight into The Amenta and what makes them tick.To celebrate, The Amenta embark on their first headlining tour in over a decade, kicking off on November 16 in Sydney and taking in an appearance at this year's Froth & Fury festival in Adelaide. It is a tour metal fans around the country have been screaming for, and one which sees blackened sludge machine LO! supporting for most shows in a twin sonic assault that promises to be as intense as it will be visually stunning.Keyboard/sampler Timothy Pope sat down with HEAVY to tell us more."You never know what to expect with any release," he began, "but more so with covers. People might not know a lot of the bands we covered, or maybe they knew the songs too well and don't think we do good versions. You never really know how people are going to receive it but so far it's been almost exclusively really positive."We ask Pope why now was the right time for The Amenta to make this album."It was something we almost started doing almost accidently when we started recording our last album Revelator," he explained. "We've always been a band where basically anything we write we record and it gets released. So there's not a lot of additional stuff floating around. There's no B sides or nothing we can put together a special release with, so it was a deliberate decision of let's try and record a couple of songs that we won't put on the album, but we'll just use the fact we're recording to get them done as efficiently as possible. Then if we need to do a Japanese import version with bonus tracks or anything like that then we've got some tracks. We recorded the drums of the Alice In Chains song called Angry Chair and also the drums for the Halo song Rise. We recorded them at the same time we recorded drums for Revelator, and at one point we even talked about having those songs on the album anyway. But as we went through those dropped by the wayside, and we decided to concentrate on the songs that we know are going to be on the album. They sat there for a little while not doing anything, and then we were talking about doing something with those songs and thought we would build it out to something more rather than just have two songs on Bandcamp. As we discussed it we came up with all this idea of all these bands we wanted to cover, and we decided to pin them all around this new song that we wrote especially for it and make it into a bit more of a solid release. Something that people could get their teeth into a bit."In the full interview, Tim talks more about the covers chosen and why, the broad spectrum of influences and how they shaped The Amenta's sound, how much the songs were changed from the original versions, the process of reworking each song, the awesome album cover, the one original song on Plague Of Locus and if that is a hint at the future direction of their music, the upcoming tour and what to expect and more.

THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW - Featuring Stacy Antonel Nashville artist Stacy Antonel makes clever, country-leaning Americana that feels vintage and hyper-modern. Her “country jazz” vocals conjure the great singers of the 20s-30s, with the emotive power of country icon Patsy Cline. Rooted in classic country and laced with jazz, pop, and R&B elements, Antonel's narrative songs often feature unconventional themes.  Antonel grew up near San Diego studying classical piano and cites an eclectic range of early musical inspiration:  Tori Amos's peculiar phrasing, Otis Redding's rich melodic hooks. After winning the televised singing contest “3 Minutes to Stardom”, Antonel quit her job to focus full-time on music. She began performing classic country covers as Ginger Cowgirl, and in 2017 moved to Nashville to record her self-titled debut EP, which was released in 2019. The album was praised by critics and led to tours in California, the Southeast, the UK, and Germany.  Antonel's debut full-length Always the Outsider drops June 2022 under her own name, an eclectic, otherworldly Americana collection of “outsider anthems” exploring concepts like alien romance and past lives as well as everyday emotions like isolation and disconnectedness. Produced by Ben Moore (Hot Snakes, Diamanda Galas, Burt Bacharach), the modern-retro country album features Antonel's distinctively jazzy vocals alongside virtuosic instrumentation by Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams) on pedal steel, Joe Reed (Merle Haggard) on bass, and guitarist Paul Sgroi. On this episode, Marc talks with Bill Perrine, author of “Alien Territory: Radical, Experimental, & Irrelevant Music in 1970s San Diego,” published in May of 2023. It's a fascinating look at so much varied experimental music, much of it centered around the University of California at San Diego, whose archives Bill was able to comb through for unheard gems. Bill highlights familiar figures such as Harry Partch, Pauline Oliveros, and Diamanda Galas, but also lesser known characters like Jim French, Warren Burt, Arthur Frick, and tons more.In his introduction, Bill writes, “I take it as a given that the music is not, and should not be, the sole providence of academics, specialists, or art snobs. It is made by professors at universities as well as punks in trailer parks.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Bill!

Her 12 studio albums include the classic 1986 collection “The Divine Punishment”—a masterwork created in response to the AIDS crisis—that was just remastered and re-released in June.

Happy New Year!  We begin the (tentatively hopeful) 2021 by starting a new strand: Nineties Gothic, examining each film in the flow of big-budget, 'respectable' spins on the classic horror texts and archetypes, mostly produced by Columbia TriStar and/or American Zoetrope. The first of these was Bram Stoker's Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and released globally during 1992-93.  Kirsty, Stella and Dan all saw during their teenage years and had their worlds rocked.  Ian was a more cynical university student in 1992 and reacted... differently.  But how do they all feel about the film on re-watching it now?   Related Links and Availability Bram Stoker's Dracula is out on DVD and Blu-Ray and can currently be streamed via Netflix in the UK Patrick (H) Willems' video essay The 90s Dark Universe can be streamed via YouTube Diamanda Galas' This is the Law of the Plague can be purchased for download from Diamanda Galas' Bandcamp page The Bill and Ted Test can be read on Twitter Host (2020) can now be purchased or rented for streaming from Amazon and similar outlets, and will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray in February Black Narcissus (2020) is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer while the 1947 film can be streamed via BritBox in the UK All Creatures Great and Small (2020) is available for streaming via My5 in the UK   Visit our website, www.andnowpodcast.com

Musikmagasinet

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 30, 2016 35:44

Sapfo, Big Mamma Thornton, Diamanda Galas. Utan datorer. Utan flimrande monitorer. Knappt någon elektricitet alls. Rösten är kött och blod och luft. There are no more tickets to the funeral.

July 10, 2015 by Curtis Killian After winning a scholarship to Berklee at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Italian singer Alessandra Bosco honed her jazz and classical techniques and has since expanded into the avant-garde after discovering radical vocal improvisers like Diamanda Galas and Meredith Monk. Bosco says she was deeply changed by her Berklee experience, which she called "a beautiful sharing of thoughts, personal experiences, friendship and work opportunities.” Inspired by sacred traditions such Sufi chants and shamanic icaros, here’s a vocal extemporary composition from Alessandra Bosco.

Barbara Maier Gustern is an 80-year-old classically trained singer in New York City. She teaches singing lessons out of her two-bedroom apartment in Chelsea. For decades, she's taught a wide range of singers: Argentinian and opera singers, aspiring cantors, the Grammy-nominated vocalist Roseanna Vitro. But she's become a favorite among the edgy and powerful voices of New York's downtown queer, performance and rock scenes: Her students include Debbie Harry, Taylor Mac, Justin Vivian Bond, John Kelly, Lady Rizo, Penny Arcade, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Miss Guy and Kathleen Hanna. Barbra Maier Gustern A shared love of dirty jokes and wild performances made her an unlikely matriarch to this talented and raunchy family of artists. The avant-garde composer and musician Diamanda Galas called Barbara, “the baddest bitch in New York City." Machine Dazzle Reported by Nicole Pasulka. Solo. No one typifies Devilish music more than Diamanda Galas, an avant vocalist who incorporates the scream as art. We feature Diamanda's “music” exclusively throughout this whole show, as we learn more about the Devil and His history. For the first time in decades, callers called this show “horrible,” but it isn't horrible, it's just difficult listening… Unusual music for unusual listeners. 3 Hours.
