Seven centuries before Christ walked this earth, Isaiah gazed into the future and saw the coming Messiah as a "Man of Sorrows, and acquainted with grief." This divine preview of the only One who would bear our pain, carry our sorrows, and take our sins upon Himself at Calvary. Jesus perfectly fulfilled this ancient prophecy, experiencing rejection, betrayal, physical agony, and the weight of human sin so we may be healed and forgiven. But Isaiah's "Man of Sorrows" is our source of lasting joy. Through His sorrows, we find eternal life and the forgiveness of sins.

Remember a time when you felt like you were sinking—a time when, unless help came quickly you would drown in your troubles? Psalm 22:1-5John 10:14-18 Matthew 27:45-56
We all experience brokenness - in our bodies, relationships, and walk with God. But how does a holy God deal with our sin and restore what's broken?Isaiah 52-53 reveals God's stunning answer: not a conquering king, but a suffering servant. This mysterious figure would be "disfigured," despised, and rejected. Yet through His wounds, we find healing. Through His punishment, we receive peace. He would carry our sins as a guilt offering, willingly submitting to death to justify many. This prophecy found its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. God's redemption plan didn't match human expectations - it exceeded them. His ways are higher than ours. The servant who was broken became the one who makes us whole. When you face brokenness today, remember: Jesus took it upon Himself so you could experience restoration and peace with God.
A wonderful sermon by our pastoral intern Ian Mosley.

Jesus: Man of Sorrows (*technical issues - didn't capture full sermon*)
Jesus suffered, and he is called a “man of sorrows.” What a comfort it is to know that the Lord himself understands what it means to feel sadness and pain, and that He is with us in our sorrow.
This is the March 1st sermon from the First United Methodist Church in Decatur, Texas. This sermon is taken from Isaiah 53:1-3.
“Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up.” Yet the Servant Isaiah describes is not adorned in visible splendor but “despised and rejected,” a Man of Sorrows acquainted with grief. In part 9 of our special 12-part series connecting Old Testament prophecy to New Testament fulfillment, we stand before one of the most profound portraits of the Messiah in all of Scripture. Here we see the One who bears our griefs, carries our sorrows, is wounded for our transgressions, and by whose stripes we are healed. The Rev. Chris Matthis, senior pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Castle Rock, CO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Isaiah 52:13–53:12. To learn more about Epiphany Lutheran, visit epiphanylc.org. This Advent series begins by covering the last Old Testament prophet, Malachi, and then spends twelve episodes alternating between Old Testament prophecy and New Testament fulfillment, tracing God's promises from Isaiah to the birth of Christ. The series explores Emmanuel's promise, the Davidic King, John the Baptist as forerunner, and reaches its climax with the Nativity. The final episodes examine the Suffering Servant, the shadow of the cross in Christ's infancy, Isaiah's Messianic mission statement, and John's declaration that "the Word became flesh." Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. A homily for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year C 8/17/2025
Have you ever faced the heartbreak of a dream that didn't come true? That kind of grief is real, and it runs deep. But I want you to know—you are not alone. Jesus Himself understands sorrow. The Bible tells us that He was… …a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. He knows what it is to weep, to feel the weight of heavy loss. And yet, He promises that sorrow is not the end of your story. If you're walking through grief right now, don't rush past it. Let Jesus carry you through it, and that will bring you healing and peace, and a joy that will be restored at just the right time. You can begin your new life with Jesus today. Invite Jesus to transform your life and carry you in your grief. You are not alone. You are seen, and you are loved. And there is hope ahead for you. Always remember, there is hope with God. I'm Andrew Palau. "He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care."
