The Hey Chaplain podcast is by far one of the best podcasts I have come across. The insights and wise guidance offered in each episode are incredibly informative and thought-provoking. As someone who is considering a career as a chaplain in the Fire Department or Boy Scout Chaplaincy, this podcast has provided me with invaluable information and paths to explore. It hasn't drawn me away from my communities of interest, but rather enhanced my understanding and awareness of the work I feel called to do. I am grateful for this podcast and all that it offers.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is its ability to provide an inside look into the law enforcement community. As a chaplain coming new into this community, I appreciate the depth of understanding and empathy that is shared in each episode. This podcast goes beyond what can be learned in a classroom setting and offers real-life experiences and perspectives from those in the field. It allows listeners to gain insight into the challenges, joys, and complexities of being a first responder or law enforcement officer.
The worst aspect of this podcast is difficult to pinpoint because it truly caters to its target audience - cops and other first responders - without exclusion based on religion or personal beliefs. However, for some listeners who may not be part of these communities or have an interest in law enforcement, the content may not be as relatable or engaging. That being said, even for individuals outside these fields, there is still value in listening to the stories shared and gaining a deeper understanding of a profession that often goes unnoticed.
In conclusion, The Hey Chaplain podcast is truly remarkable. It offers valuable insights, guidance, and support for those in law enforcement or related fields while also providing a unique perspective for outsiders looking in. The conversations are deep yet easy to listen to, informative yet entertaining. Each episode brings something new and captivating to the table. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone interested in gaining insight into the world of law enforcement or those who want to better understand and support their loved ones in these professions.

Text a Message to the ShowThis is the second part of our story of Detective Dana Gouge, who handcuffed the BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader. If you haven't heard part one which told the story of a narcissistic serial killer who couldn't stop talking… then what are you doing?! Go back and listen to Ep 110 right now! We left off with Detective Gouge putting the handcuffs on Dennis Rader before the task force took him to be interviewed. Dana is going to tell us a bit about those interviews but what I find interesting, and what I think is missing from your typical true crime podcast, is what effect it had on the detectives to encounter a truly evil man, to be the team working such a large case, and then to wrap it up. So I'm going to explore these topics with Dana and talk about how that affects him twenty years later. But first let me tell you what I did not reveal in part 1: the reason I know Dana Gouge. Dana isn't just a retired homicide detective, today he's also a chaplain. In fact at the time of this recording he's in the process of becoming a police chaplain at the same agency where I serve. I'm really excited about the prospect of serving alongside him and his background in both policing and now counseling, pastoral care, ministry, and theology make him an excellent person to discuss the topic what to do when you encounter true evil. Text a Message to the ShowToday is a crime history episode on the BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader. Rader is known to have committed at least ten murders between 1974 and 1991, communicating with the media about his crimes but not getting caught. He called himself BTK, for "bind, torture, kill," and had disappeared for 13 years when suddenly he began communicating with the media and the police again. This is the story of how he got caught. My guest today is Dana Gouge, who was a homicide detective at the Wichita Police Department. This interview is going to cover the investigation from 2003 to 2005 which led to Dana being the detective to actually handcuff one of America's most famous serial killers.Music is by Brian Bolger Hey Chaplain Podcast Episode 110Tags:Serial Killer, BTK Killer, CODIS, Cold Case, Detective, DNA, Evidence, FBI, History, Investigations, Journalists, KBI, Murder, Police, Profilers, Task Forces, Wichita, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Text a Message to the ShowThis is your Quick Guide to Bagpipe Tunes. I'm anticipating that there will be two distinct camps among my listeners, those who love bagpipes and those who don't yet. But please give this a chance. First, this is fairly short, and there's not a single tune here that lasts more than 2 minutes. Second, I really do understand. I'm not naturally drawn to this music, I had to be invested in it first, through my chaplaincy work with the police department and through my ministry work performing funerals. And even through editing this episode, the tunes that all sounded the same at first, began to be distinct, and more than that, they became something that I found myself whistling as I went about my day. So I ask that you would give the bagpipes a chance, it really is possible for it to grow on you.Resources:Jim's previous appearances were in Ep 017 and Ep 108J. Text a Message to the ShowEvery cop has a bump in the night story; sometimes those bumps happen in broad daylight. Today I'm talking to a veteran homicide and cold case detective from Kansas City named Stuart LIttlefield. Detective Littlefield was recommended to me because he's a great story teller with a great story that might actually include an encounter with a ghost. Even if you don't believe in that kind of thing, it seems that as human beings we can't get enough of those strange unexplainable stories and the detective and I talk a bit about that too.Music is by Brian BolgerHey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 36Tags:Police, Cold Cases, Death, Detectives, Gangs, Gang Signs, Ghosts, Graffiti, Halloween, Hospital, Knives, Polaroid, Spooky, Kansas City, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Text a Message to the ShowWhen you first became a cop, you probably had a goal. You wanted to become a homicide detective, or a K9 handler, or you wanted to make the SWAT team. Maybe you're on track to achieve that goal, but even if you do make it, what then? How do you go about getting promoted later in your career if you've already gone into a specialty like SWAT? I've got someone for you today who can answer those questions. Today we are bringing back a frequent guest and friend of the show, Ryan Miller. Ryan is currently a major at his department, so not only has he been in the SWAT teams as an officer, a sergeant, and a captain, but he's also been in the position to hire and fire police officers and to evaluate people for special assignments. Text a Message to the ShowToday's guest is Jimmy Graham. Jimmy was a US Navy SEAL and worked for the CIA but one of the most interesting jobs he had, and one that overlaps with law enforcement, is that in both the SEALs and the CIA he trained people in CQB, i.e. Close Quarters Battle, room-clearing, hostage rescue, and room-to-room combat. Jimmy still trains people but now he includes teaching on family relationships, the meaning of manliness, and his Christian faith. Text a Message to the ShowI believe that there is a small number of occupations who carefully observe human behavior. Cops are definitely on that list… but so are comedians. I know that both groups make me laugh with all the funny observations they make about the crazy behavior in this world. Text a Message to the ShowThere are two conflicting truisms in law enforcement: one is old and one is new. First, it's stereotypical that cops, when you ask them, don't want their kids to go into the same line of work. Second, it's becoming more and more true that law enforcement families are some of the only reliable places to find applicants for the job. Police work, like firefighting and the military, is becoming a family business and we're seeing more multi-generational law enforcement families. Today we're talking to Kevin Steele, who is part of three generation, 63 year legacy at the Kansas City Kansas Police Department.Music is by Chris Haugen and by Winking Fox MusicHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 088Tags:Police, Career, Cars, Children, Family, Fatherhood, History, Legacy, Lessons, Parenting, Teaching, Kansas City, KansasSupport the Show. Thanks for Listening! Text a Message to the ShowThis is part two of an interview with Shawn Thomas. If you haven't listened to part one, in which talked about her experience as the wellness officer in a large Sheriff's Office in the Pacific Northwest, then please go download that episode. She had a lot of insight to share, especially if you think you might be the first wellness officer in your agency. But today we're talking about her second chapter. She began producing wellness conferences with speakers and vendors and hundreds of first responder attendees. And this unexpected role became her main gig when she retired. The whole process of putting together a conference is fascinating but I think the main thing I want to walk away with is that you are capable of doing things you never thought you'd do. There may not be a clear path forward, but don't let that stop you from making a difference.Resources:Shawn's organization, 1st Responder Conferences: https://www.1strc.orgFirst HELP First Responder Suicide statistics: https://1sthelp.orgMusic is by Alexander NakaradaHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 087.5Tags:Wellness, Conferences, Divorce, Finances , Retirement, Stress, PTSD, Ocean City, Seattle, California, Maryland, Oregon, WashingtonSupport the Show. Thanks for Listening!
