Marsy’s Law for Pennsylvania has achieved a major milestone - passage of the state House of Representatives and state Senate - all in about five months. This checks off the first hurdle for a change to the constitution. In 2019, the process starts over again, with a view to putting the question to voters late next year. We talk with State Senator Guy Reschenthaler, State Representative Sheryl Delozier, and marsy's law for Pennsylvania campaign director Jennifer Riley about the success and what the next steps are for the Marsy's Law campaign. Then we talk with Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis about the role of DAs accross the commonwealth in supporting Marsy's Law and victims' rights. Show Notes: If you or someone you know is the victim of sexual assault or other crime please contact Pennsylvania's Office of Victim Advocate at 800-563-6399 or ova.pa.gov (https://ova.pa.gov/). Marsy's Law seeks to give crime victims legal standing in bail hearings, pleas, sentencing, and parole hearings. It also allows crime victims to refuse an interview or other discovery requests made by the accused or any person acting on behalf of the accused. The Law has passed in several states including California, Illinois, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In North Dakota, issues with interpreting and implementing the law as it relates to the discovery process have been reported. Other states have experienced similar issues.
