Episode 154 Chapter 15, Elektronische Musik in Germany. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music  Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. A note about the work “So Like a Waking” from Peter E. Murphy for the Michigan Quarterly Review's Summer 2024 issue: 1. Eight years and almost fifty drafts, writing "So Like a Waking" was a pain in the ass. 2. I couldn't . . . wouldn't accept that I was an alcoholic. Bums shitting themselves on a park bench or in the gutter, they were alcoholics, not me. Sure, I woke up on a park bench . . . I woke up in a gutter, but I only peed myself. 3. Drinking was the only thing that made sense to me. Make that poetry and drinking. I loved them both equally. However, drinking was trying to kill me. Poetry was trying to keep me alive. 4. At a writing retreat I led in Spain several years ago, a woman who had just lost her mother said, “I'm sorry. She's all I can write about.” “Don't apologize,” I said. “My mother died sixty years ago, and she's all I can write about.” 5. I think of my high school years as Early-Derelict Period. I trudged from bookstore to bookstore in Greenwich Village, brown-bagging a quart of Ballantine Ale, searching for Ginsberg's Howl one week, Ferlinghetti's A Coney Island of the Mind the next. Then I graduated to Mid-Derelict Period. Then Late-Derelict Period when I hit the proverbial rock bottom in a flophouse in Wales. 6. “Hi! My name is Peter, and I'm . . . um . . . well . . . you know . . . .”

Boston is today one of the world's greatest cities, first in higher education, hospitals, life science companies, and sports teams. It was the home of the Great Puritan Migration, the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the first civil rights movement, the abolition movement, and the women's rights movement. But the city that gave us the first use of ether as anesthesia, the telephone, technicolor film, and the mutual fund--the city where Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott founded their world-changing partnership--was also the hub of the anti-immigration movement, the divisive busing era, and decades of self-inflicted decay. Boston has the most important history of any American city. Yet its history has never been given a comprehensive treatment until now.  Join Dan Dain in A History of Boston (Peter E. Randall, 2023) as he acts as your tour guide from the arrival of First Peoples up to the election of Boston's first woman and person of color as mayor. Dain's masterful work explores the policies and practices that took Boston from its highest heights to its lowest lows and back again, and examines the central role that density, diversity, and good urban design play in the success of cities like Boston. Synopsis 1991 was a big year for American composer John Corigliano. The Metropolitan Opera premiered his opera “The Ghosts of Versailles” and the 53-year old composer won two Grammys and the Grawemeyer Award for his Symphony No. 1. Corigliano was increasingly recognized as one of the leading American composers of his generation, and was deluged with commissions for new works. But about 10 years before all that, guitarist Sharon Isbin had asked Corigliano to write a concerto for her, and kept on asking him. On today's date in 1993, her persistence paid off when, with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and conductor Hugh Wolff, she gave the premiere performance of Corigliano's “Troubadours — Variations for Guitar and Orchestra.” This piece was inspired by the courtly love tradition of the medieval troubadours, whose songs combined sophisticated word play with simple but elegantly communicative melodies. “For composers the idea of true simplicity — in contrast to chic simple-mindedness — is mistrusted and scorned,” wrote Corigliano. “But the guitar has a natural innocence about it… So the idea of a guitar concerto was, for me, like a nostalgic return to all the feelings I had when I started composing — before the commissions and deadlines and reviews. A time when discovery and optimistic enthusiasm ruled my senses… Troubadours is a lyrical concerto.” Music Played in Today's Program John Corigliano (b. 1938) Troubadours Sharon Isbin, guitar; Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; Hugh Wolff, cond. Ripples of the Jesus Movement with Vern Fein

Today's episode focuses on the Jesus Movement and how Christianity can get back to the heart of the pure love of God.  Vern Fein has dedicated his life to ridding the modern Christian church of negative influences so that mercy and justice, which we need so much of, can re-surface.  Kelly and Vern discuss literal and figurative interpretations of the Bible and how to orient ourselves within communities, especially amid times of dizzying political strife.  Although it's been more than 50 years since the Jesus Movement of the 1970s, there are ripples of those same inclinations and desires in progressive Christian circles today. Vern has some thoughts on what's happening in the Christian church and where things might be headed in the next 50 years. Meet Vern Vern Fein is an octogenarian who has lived a rich and storied life. He studied American Literature at the graduate level at the University of Illinois in the early 1970s. During that time, he became heavily involved in political activism with the anti-Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movements. And moved from being an atheist to becoming Christian as part of the Jesus Movement. He and his friends were among the many young people who left conventional Christian churches in search of more fulfilling and countercultural spiritual experiences. These years significantly shaped the rest of Vern's life and the way the Urbana community looks. Vern served as the outreach pastor for two area churches, and through his work helped to start or sustain area ministries including the Eastern Illinois Food Bank and vegatarian restaurant The Red Herring.  He's now retired after 45 years as a special ed teacher at Cunningham Children’s Home. Since retiring, he's written a book called Radical Faith: From 60s Counterculture to Jesus about the connection between his faith and politics, both of which are still significant in his life. He also writes poetry, essays, and short stories, and is working on his first poetry book.  Active at New Covenant Fellowship Church in Champaign IL, he's proud to be involved in their study to implement reparations in our community and nationally.  Vern Fein's poetry and prose – https://www.vernfein.com Resources We Mention After Evangelism: The Path to a New Christianity by David Gushee Changing Our Mind: The Landmark Call for Inclusion of LGBTQ Christians by David Gushee What Is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything by Rob Bell How the Bible Actually Works: In Which I Explain How an Ancient, Ambiguous, and Diverse Book Leads Us to Wisdom Rather Than Answers–And Why That’s Good News by Peter E

Today's guest is Christine Chapman, an eclectic American horn player, and a member of the innovative and explosive Ensemble Musikfabrik. I will read her bio now for those listeners who might not be familiar with her work. Raised in the coastline woods of western Michigan, Christine Chapman has traveled far and wide to pursue her passion for music. In 1990, after finishing her musical studies at the University of Michigan and Indiana University, she broke out of the rural heartland of America for an orchestra job on the still fresh border between East and West Germany. The desire to gain a bit of work experience before returning to the States has since turned into a quarter of a century of exploration and adventure. As a member of Ensemble Musikfabrik, Christine Chapman has had the opportunity to collaborate directly with many of today's greatest composers, premiering and performing works by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Wolfgang Rihm, Peter Eötvös, Rebecca Saunders and Georg Friedrich Haas, among others. The experience of performing "outside of the box", such as with the music of Harry Partch, La Monte Young, Sun Ra, or Mouse on Mars, is the main impetus of her work. "Trying to see through the technicalities of playing to bring out the soul of the music; that is what's so exciting for me.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Between 1949 and 1997, Hong Kong transformed from a struggling British colonial outpost into a global financial capital. Made in Hong Kong: Transpacific Networks and a New History of Globalization (Columbia University Press, 2021) delivers a new narrative of this metamorphosis, revealing Hong Kong both as a critical engine in the expansion and remaking of postwar global capitalism and as the linchpin of Sino-U.S. trade since the 1970s. In Made in Hong Kong, Peter E. Hamilton explores the role of an overlooked transnational Chinese elite who fled to Hong Kong amid war and revolution. Despite losing material possessions, these industrialists, bankers, academics, and other professionals retained crucial connections to the United States. They used these relationships to enmesh themselves and Hong Kong with the U.S. through commercial ties and higher education. By the 1960s, Hong Kong had become a manufacturing powerhouse supplying American consumers, and by the 1970s it was the world's largest sender of foreign students to American colleges and universities. Hong Kong's reorientation toward U.S. international leadership enabled its transplanted Chinese elites to benefit from expanding American influence in Asia and positioned them to act as shepherds to China's reengagement with global capitalism. After China's reforms accelerated under Deng Xiaoping, Hong Kong became a crucial node for China's export-driven development, connecting Chinese labor with the U.S. market. Peter E. Hamilton is a historian of China and the World. From fall 2021, he will be Assistant Professor in World History at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. His research has been published in Twentieth-Century China, The International History of Review, The Journal of Historical Sociology, and numerous media outlets. Ghassan Moazzin is an Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of History at the University of Hong Kong. He works on the economic and business history of 19th and 20th century China, with a particular focus on the history of foreign banking, international finance and electricity in modern China. His first book, tentatively titled Banking on the Chinese Frontier: Foreign Banks and Global Finance in Modern China, 1870–1919, is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press.
