I’m excited to introduce you to a new friend that I met at a conference last October. If your life feels out of balance and out of whack, then this is the show for you. You’ll learn how to take action steps to become a more empowered and grounded person no matter what obstacles you face. Melanie C. Klein, M.A., is a sought-after empowerment coach and respected thought leader in the areas of authentic empowerment, visibility, and body confidence. She is also a successful writer, speaker, and Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies. With over two decades of professional and personal work, Melanie integrates her background in mindfulness and embodied wisdom with her academic expertise and advocacy work. In this way, she offers a holistic and unique pathway to personal freedom and prosperity, one that is customized to each individual. How to thrive How do you meet new challenges? Melanie explains that mindset and a sense of self are two keys to thriving during a challenging time like going through a global pandemic. We know from this point forward, our new normal will become normal. To be empowered, we have to be deeply rooted in ourselves and discerning about helpful conversations and decisions, along with being conscious of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The biggest, brightest expressions of ourselves aren’t dependent on external circumstances. The key question to ask is, “How am I approaching this?” It all comes down to mindset, so try to view each obstacle as a new opportunity. TWEET: Try to view each obstacle as a new opportunity. @melmelklein #chasingdreams Making your own choices Are you honest with yourself? Times like these give us time and space to consider things we’ve overlooked in the past. When we’re forced into a slow-down mode, we have time to rest deeply and make informed decisions. We have to decide when to lean out and when to lean in. It’s essential to pay attention to your inner compass and become comfortable with yourself in this “dance of existence.” Melanie explains how to know when to flow and when to create more of a container for yourself. TWEET: Slow-down mode gives us time to rest deeply and make informed decisions. @melmelklein #chasingdreams The two M’s: meditation and mindfulness What was your explosive moment? Melanie recalls the eye-opening experience of a class she took years ago that allowed her to understand more fully the systems and structures in the world. It helped her decide what her life’s work would be in what she calls “an explosive and liberating moment.” Soon after, she discovered yoga--way before yoga was cool. Pairing yoga with meditation has helped her develop a critical consciousness in the world, which has been fortified by her mindfulness practices. After more than 20 years of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, Melanie still turns to these practices daily to find balance in her life. What It Means to Be an Empowered Woman “Storytelling Can Be A Form of Empowerment.” —Dianne Allen (01:31-01:43) Bumping into someone who seems like a perfect match right away is incredible. Especially if that person’s vision aligns with yours. That’s how it all started with Dianne A Allen and Melanie C. Klein, who share amazing stories through a podcast interview. In this episode, they talk about what it means to be an authentically empowered person. Part One of ‘What It Means to Be an Empowered Woman’ Melanie says that storytelling is the most engaging way to share things. Her curiosity started when she stepped into an incredible class at a community college called the 'sociology of women'. She didn't have the awareness or the understanding of what it was or why it was even important for her. It was very vague. Through the guidance of her mentor, she remembered there were many times she felt very small. “Empowerment is about fully embracing who you are.” – Dianne Allen (20:19-20:31) Many women are rooted in a large system of oppression. That was one of the toxic and dysfunctional aspects of Melanie’s upbringing and experiences. But she realized that she wasn’t lacking anything. The problem was growing up in a culture where girls and women are systematically oppressed. They end up internalizing oppression and creating barriers in their own way. The doubts and lack of self-worth were instilled because girls and women are objectified. She realized empowerment is something larger than herself, she is fine the way she is and that there are exciting new possibilities available for her. That was her first step toward authentic empowerment. Her mentor supported her all the way through. Melanie soon had a light bulb moment, where she knew this is what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She committed to empowering others. She knew it benefits society when we give everyone an opportunity to be self-actualized and value their diversity. People can get caught up in analysis or intellectualizing. Then, we can fail to act. Sometimes the culture, the narrative, the value systems, and the structured oppression within that system can lead people astray from their own authentic selves. Part Two of ‘What It Means to Be an Empowered Woman’ When Melanie started stepping into leadership, she kept hitting what felt like walls. It took a while to get going. Overcoming these obstacles is where she felt the greatest sense of expansion, the greatest sense of empowerment. When you empower other women, that makes you unique. You have the honor to guide people so that they can have a rich expression of life and thus be more empowered. If we're gonna come into the sense of empowerment, that empowerment is plugged into the full radical acceptance of all parts of us. “Empowered people, empower others.” - Dianne Allen (18:02-18:19) Things have changed dramatically in the past 40 years, the needle keeps being moved. Check what needs to be changed or improved. It's so important to always focus on what's working and what has shifted. Things have improved, let's celebrate that. There has been a great shift in terms of representation for women in politics. There are more female-owned companies. There are more CEOs that are women. We have been the ones who have made that change. When you look back and you see how much things have changed, there's definitely hope for the future. You're a rock star and you're here on purpose with a purpose. So, go out there and live. More Information About Melanie C. Klein Melanie C. This week's episode has a special guest: Melanie Klein. A sought after empowerment coach, thought leader and influencer in the areas of body confidence, authentic empowerment and visibility. Melanie is also a successful and highly acclaimed writer, speaker and professor of sociology and women's studies. So without further ado, I am so excited for this episode with Melanie Klein. Hosts: Nick and Kisma Special Guest: Melanie Klein 04:40 The First Connection I kind of want to give our listeners a little about story. Melanie, we met almost two years ago at an event. Melanie has this essence about her. She's very beautiful. There was something about her as a woman that was so captivating, a softness and a strength. Then I found out that you were very much involved in the yoga world… which made since to why there was a connection! Your yoga history, when did that start for you? Were you young or did it come about? Like in college? When did you find yoga? KISMA 05:02 - Perceptions So I'm totally going to answer that question after I say it's funny to hear you reflect what you saw when you saw me the first time. Later in the episode we are going to talk about how we see ourselves versus how others see us. Because what you described is how I saw you..in fact, as much as people may see me as what you described or potentially grounded or empowered, I'm still a human and I have my vulnerable parts and there are people who intimidate me and I remember seeing you and feeling a little intimidated. Melanie 07:22 - Yoga Beginnings The yoga question that you posed, I'd say is one half of the biggest part of my empowerment equation. In my early twenties and coming from a pretty granola family, things like yoga or spirituality were not foreign to me at all. Especially as an artist and poet, the connection that we tap into to Source when we are creative. All of those things were part of growing up, not to mention, having a very nature-based experience as a young girl living in Germany… Melanie 09:10 “I had no clue what to expect” I ended up in Kundalini class at this community college extension through this community college extension program in this old stinky fitness center on the side of the railroad tracks with these outdated, big fitness mats. We sat down and my teacher had the white turban outfit and I was like, oh, this is going to be interesting. I had no clue what to expect. Over the next few weeks my sister and I (who I was going to this class with) just kept going, and inviting others to go… this was 1996. There were 15 to 20 people in the class, which was a lot and really weird for Kundalini yoga. Melanie 13:48 I know you've heard us talk about this, but there will be a calling, you know, whether it's intuition, whether it's a guide from the universe or God or source. I mean, my first yoga class kind of happened the same way I was living in Hong Kong. And one of my good friends said, “Hey, there's this really new yoga studio open in long Kwai Fong, let's go”. I was so not committed, but I went to this class, it was all Indian teachers and here I am,with these beautiful Asian flexible women. I'll never forget, I think it was master, he said sit Lotus Style. I crossed my legs and my knees are pointing to the ceiling. He looked at me in front of the whole class and say’s “what's the matter with your hips?” It was like, I don't know, you tell me. So it was like really frightening that. But the next day I remember feeling the same way. I felt different. And so I think that's when we do like we know we've just entered a practice where something has shifted and it's so important to stay with that. KISMA 15:11 - Full Circle Connection Not only do I love your story because I can relate to it for so many reasons, but also it's kind of a foreshadowing of I'm sure what we'll dig into here about the work I do around making yoga accessible for everybody and making everyone feel it's for them because like you said, stepping into something that you knew was going to essentially be a game changer for you without even knowing why or how. Melanie 32:21 - Women's Empowerment and Men My question for you is about this, I think in a lot of ways in women's empowerment there's something there for guys too, that can tip over into feminization of the man. And I'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about those dynamics and it's like, how does everybody win in that conversation in your mind? Nick There's a lot to be said and what you just shared, Nick. A few things I want to say about that is we have to also understand, especially in the last three or four years, we have had an another massive backlash that we're currently in. So if we're looking at the second wave of feminism or what most people know is the women's liberation movement, which also coincided with the civil rights movement and the black liberation movement. And also known as the peace movement... (listen in to get the rest of Melanie's answer to this question!) 49:52 - Get to Know Melanie Give our listeners just a place where they can go and find you. I mean, what I love about Melanie, what she does for herself, she does for other women and, and this essence of empowerment has so many facets to it. So what's the best way or where do you want to direct our listeners? KISMA Melanie C.
