In recognition of Maternal Mental Health Month I am re-sharing this 2023 conversation with the founders of The Motherhood Center in NYC. With Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADS) being the #1 complication associated with birth in the US and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this remains a critical conversation. It's not just you. You're not crazy. You're not a bad mom. You're not alone. These are words and deep beliefs that resonate through and form the backbone of today's guests, Catherine Birndorf, MD, and Paige Bellenbaum, LMSW. Catherine and Paige are dedicated to changing the perinatal mental health terrain, and they do it through The Motherhood Center, a place of radical acceptance, nurturance, and individual and group support. On today's episode, we pull back the curtain on motherhood and redefine what is considered "normal" and "typical". With PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders) being the #1 complication associated with birth and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this is a critical conversation. On today's episode, we unpack why it's so important that we talk more about these conditions, how to do your best to prevent PMADs, and what to do if you or someone you love has symptoms. Aviva, Paige, and Catherine discuss: The definition of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS) and the different diagnoses that fall under the PMAD umbrella What PMAD taboos still exist today, why this needs to change, and how Roe v. Wade affects these taboos Paige and Catherine's personal stories with perinatal mood disorders and what brought them to the point of specializing in PMADS and opening the motherhood center The kinds of physical and psychological feelings and symptoms associated with PMADs and signs birthing people and their providers should watch out for Why we need to move in the direction of making it mandatory for OB-GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and any providers who come in contact with newer expecting mothers to begin educating their patients about PMADS and screening for symptoms The effects of the pandemic, social isolation, and potential cultural contributors on PMADS The role of medication and psychotherapy in treating conditions For more information or to reach out visit themotherhoodcenter.com or call (212) 335-0034. Let's get political folks! As mental health overall has gotten more attention in the media over the last 4 years, so has the very important topic of PMADs, or Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. After the latest CDC findings on the alarming maternal mortality rate, many facets of government are starting to pay attention to mothers and birthing individuals and the toll that pregnancy and child-rearing can take on their mental health.Today, we have a returning guest on the show, Paige Bellenbaum, LCSW. Paige is the Founding Director and Chief External Relations Officer at The Motherhood Center of New York. She discusses the baby steps that are being taken to protect and elevate mothers in NY and America at large, although she points out that it is just a drop in the ocean of change that is required to truly support mothers in this country. She touches on some new research and statistics that have shockingly helped change the narrative on maternal support. We discuss the highly divisive and high-tension topics surrounding motherhood and child care in America during a very heated election year. For 20 years, Paige worked in the non-profit sector, holding senior leadership positions at Hamilton Family Center Homeless Shelter, The Partnership for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, and Settlement Housing Fund. She has worked in the field of public policy, advocacy, community organizing and direct practice with disadvantaged communities including homeless families and incarcerated young adults and has held several appointed and elected political positions including the District Leader of Brooklyn's 52nd Assembly District. After her first child was born, Paige suffered from severe postpartum depression and anxiety that nearly ended her life. However, once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for PMAD education, screening, and treatment so that no more women would have to suffer silently. She drafted legislation in New York State championed by State Senator Liz Krueger, mandating hospitals to provide education on PMADs and strongly encouraging screening of all new and expecting mothers. This bill was signed into law in 2014. She has continued to be an outspoken maternal mental health advocate and clinician and uses her story as a tool for change. Paige works closely with multiple New York City agencies on maternal mental health best practice and policy, including the NYPD, DOHMH's Maternal Hospital Quality Improvement Network, and the Nurse Family Partnership, and the Administration for Children's Services.  She was a member of the NYC Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee and currently sits on the NYS Maternal Mental Health Working Group. She has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, NPR, PBS Newshour, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.Connect with her at:themotherhoodcenter.com

In this episode of Parenting Understood, we are joined by Dr. Jessica Gaulton, a neonatologist and founder of Familywell, about perinatal and postpartum health. We discuss the definition of PMADs (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders), emphasizing that it encompasses any mood disorder experienced during pregnancy or within a year after birth. We also highlight the lack of screening for PMADs and the resulting underestimation of their prevalence, emphasizing the importance of recognizing symptoms in both birthing and non-birthing parents. We touch on the sobering statistic that the leading cause of death in the perinatal period is suicide and overdose, often occurring in the period between six weeks and a year postpartum, when many new parents lack adequate support. Jessica explains how Familywell aims to integrate mental health support into OB care by embedding resources directly into clinics and making them accessible through insurance coverage.   To learn more about Dr. Gaulton and her work please visit www.familywellhealth.com, @familywellhealth and on LinkedIn at Jessica Shiffman-Gaulton or FamilyWell Health.

For 20 years, Paige worked in the non-profit sector, holding senior leadership positions at Hamilton Family Center in San Francisco and The Partnership for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity, and Settlement Housing Fund in New York. She has worked in the field of public policy, advocacy, and community organizing working with various disadvantaged populations including homeless families and incarcerated young adults, and has held several appointed and elected political positions including the District Leader of Brooklyn's 52nd Assembly District. After her first child was born, Paige suffered from severe postpartum depression and anxiety that nearly ended her life. However, once she began to heal, she became committed to fighting for education, screening, and treatment for postpartum depression so that no more women would have to suffer silently. As a result, she drafted legislation in New York State championed by Senator Liz Krueger, mandating hospitals to provide education on PMADs and strongly encouraging screening of all new and expecting mothers, signed into law in 2014. Since then, Paige has been an outspoken maternal mental health advocate and clinician and uses her story as a tool for change. She currently works closely with the NYPD on maternal mental health initiatives, DOHMH's Maternal Hospital Quality Improvement Network, and the Nurse Family Partnership and sits on the NYC Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee and the NYS Maternal Mental Health Working Group. In recognition of Maternal Mental Health Month I am re-sharing this 2023 conversation with the founders of The Motherhood Center in NYC. With Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADS) being the #1 complication associated with birth in the US and the #2 cause of maternal mortality, this remains a critical conversation.________________It's not just you. Every year, about 1 in 5 expecting and new parents experience symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. While most new mothers suffer from mood swings within the first few weeks, some pregnant and postpartum parents have intense feelings of sadness, worry, anger, numbness, or self-doubt that persist for months. Unfortunately, services are seriously lacking for parents in the United States, particularly when it comes to postpartum mental health.  Anchor Perinatal Wellness provides unique and specialized mental health programming for pregnant and postpartum people, including a free, walk-in screening clinic, outpatient services and an intensive outpatient program to pregnant and postpartum adults who are struggling with a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD).  Anchor was founded by three Latina women who recognized that they shared a passion for expanding mental health services for perinatal people and they opened their program in May of 2022. Today we are joined by two of the founders of Anchor Perinatal, Roxanne Rosenberg, a licensed mental health counselor and Veronica Kemeny, a licensed clinical social worker.  Last week, in part one of our conversation with the Anchor team we dove into a discussion of PMADs, lessons we can learn from other countries, and how PMAD's are showing up differently in minority populations. Today in part 2 of our conversation, we dive into what intensive outpatient services look like for those suffering from PMADs, and explore reproductive justice and the role it is playing in Anchor Perinatal's work. Our discussion today included: An exploration of intensive outpatient programs, how it's different, why it's rare in the US What a day in the life of an Intensive Outpatient Program looks like Reproductive Justice defined The first National Maternal Mental Health Task Force and Anchor's role in it Impact on LGBTQ+ communities of recent legislation Thank you to our sponsor: HER Circle Patreon Resources Mentioned in Episode: MAAME PSI International Anchor Perinatal Wellness Sister Song --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/herhealthcollective/support

This is why we started this podcast.  Join Steph and Vanessa's conversation with Diana (Di) Bamford about her experience with Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), including severe postpartum depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. Inspired by her personal struggles, Di made it her mission to raise awareness about PMADs and destigmatize maternal mental health.  Other topics discussed in this episode: unnecessary medical interventions, birth trauma, 3rd degree tears, and much more. Did you know perinatal depression affects 1 in 7 moms and 1 in 10 dads or partners? It can begin during pregnancy, immediately postpartum or up 2 years postpartum. Twenty years ago I found a study that stated 1 out of 3 birthing parents experience birth trauma. It's a pretty shocking statistic. As time has gone by, I wondered if the numbers had improved and perhaps we were seeing fewer parents experience traumatic birth? To answer this and take a deep dive into birth trauma, I invited Kate McReynolds LMHC owner of Root to Rise Counseling onto the podcast. Kate specializes in perinatal mental health and is a mother of two. She is down to earth and gives fantastic support around this topic.  Kate defines what birth trauma is, signs and symptoms someone is suffering from it, how it differs from PMADs, how to recover from birth trauma, and how to prepare for subsequent children after a traumatic birth. Unfortunately the numbers of parents experiencing trauma have not improved. I think this is a really important conversation for you to hear if you are preparing for birth or if you've given birth. Kate shares from her personal experiences as a Mom and provides us with an understanding of what support is available to help understand, prevent, and recover from birth trauma. The message of today's conversation is that postpartum depression and anxiety don't always have simple, easy fixes. Medications, therapy, and other supports don't help some as quickly as others. In these cases, suffering mothers need to know that they are not alone and that others are going through the same challenges that come with lingering depression. Today's guest shares her story to bring awareness to this issue. Join us to learn more. As a social worker and mom of a three-year-old son, Lynn Wilhite suffers from postpartum depression. She has been struggling since pregnancy, with medications being unable to help her effectively thus far. She has created the Instagram page, My Journey with PPD, as a way of trying to reach other moms and partners with similar experiences. Lynn hopes to bring awareness to the fact that PMADs don't always have an easy fix and loved ones need to support a mother for the duration of her journey. Show Highlights: How Lynn's PPD story began as she planned, with her psychiatrist, adjustments to her antidepressant and sleeping medications to prepare for her first pregnancy How not sleeping for an extended period of time brought on her depressive episode How her son's birth went well, except for the NICU interventions brought on by her medications—and her first dose of “mom guilt” occurred Where Lynn is today–three years postpartum and over 40 medications later How her son had sensory processing disorders and needed several therapies, perpetuating her mom guilt  How Lynn tried multiple medications, trying to find something that worked How suicidal ideations and problems in bonding with her son brought additional challenges How Lynn experiences grief, even today, over her guilt and all the things that haven't gone well in her motherhood journey  Why Lynn was hospitalized at two years postpartum after trying every medication available in different combinations How a move to a different state left her with a gap in therapy and support How a new medication is starting to lift the depression fog for Lynn and give her cautious optimism What Lynn's current therapy work is doing to help What Lynn wants people to know and hear from her story Resources: Connect with Lynn: Instagram Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support!  Visit www.postpartum.net/professionals/certificate-trainings/ for information on the grief course.   Visit my website, www.wellmindperinatal.com, for more information, resources, and courses you can take today!
