Dianne Bondy is a social justice activist, author, accessible yoga teacher, and the leader of the Yoga For All Movement. Her inclusive approach to yoga empowers anyone to practice—regardless of their shape, size, ethnicity, or level of ability.Dianne's commitment to increasing diversity in yoga has been recognized in her work with Pennington's, Gaiam, and the Yoga & Body Image Coalition, as well as in speaking engagements at Princeton, Duke, University of Buffalo and UC Berkeley on Yoga, Race, and Diversity. Dianne is the author of the international best-selling book Yoga for Everyone. Dianne opens the show by telling Laura about the time she went to a yoga class and had the staff making judgements about her based on her body type. This led Dianne to decide and open her own judgement-free yoga practice that focused on inclusiveness. Dianne discusses her experience dealing with body image as a child. This included her parents pushing her to diet and exercise at a young age, which led to an eating disorder by age 12. After dealing with starvation, binging, and purging on a regular basis, Dianne realized that people will always find something about you to pick on, and she discovered the need to draw boundaries in life and not always focus on people pleasing. After being told by her doctors that she needed to gain weight in order to get pregnant, she had her son which became the catalyst for overcoming her eating disorder. Laura and Dianne then have a conversation about Ozempic and seeing food as more than just fuel for your body. Dianne talks about hosting events and realizing that sometimes a pivot is needed, and as long as there's honesty and transparency in your intention then people will find it if it's truly for them. Before they wrap, Dianne talks about her current relationship with her mother, and how she's always on some kind of diet. She also tells Laura about planning a trip to Napa in the near future. For More on Dianne:Email:  dianne@diannebondyyoga.comWebsite: www.diannebondyyoga.comIG: @diannebondyyogaofficialFB: @DianneBondyYogaOfficial/YouTube: DianneBondyYogaBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-only-one-in-the-room--6052418/support.

Join me for a deep and powerful conversation with Melanie Klein. She is a mentor of mine and one of the founders of The Yoga and Body Image Coalition. She’s run the marathon of social justice work time and time again, and she has inspired me to grow as a person and as a social intellectual.  The real work of social awakening goes well beyond the yoga mat. For Melanie, she started out at the intersection between social work, gender studies, and media literacy before ever taking her first Kundalini Yoga class, but that first class was a game-changer. It altered her whole perspective because she realized she wasn’t as in touch with her own body as she thought. Having the intellect to deconstruct the world around you is one strength, but until you have the tools to deconstruct the way these messages live inside yourself, you aren’t reaching your full potential. Critical consciousness is key to the awareness we achieve on the yoga mat, but it’s also integral to carrying what we’ve learned on the mat into our waking world.  Within the wellness in the community, we cannot talk about yoga without touching on the uncomfortable things people don’t want to talk about. But things like colonization, racism, classism, and sexism occur in this space too, and even though we seek meditation to “disconnect” in a sense, we cannot disconnect these social issues from our practice.  Yoga is our space to make change and take the right action. It is a space where body acceptance can be realized, and it’s also a platform for amplifying marginalized voices. Practicing yoga strengthens our hearts so we can put in the real work - what Melanie calls “in-house shifting” - so that we can be the change we wish to see in this industry and in the world around us. I want to keep inspiring you to continue your practice. Send an email at info@kinoyoga.com and tell me - what does yoga mean to you? This week's episode has a special guest: Melanie Klein. A sought after empowerment coach, thought leader and influencer in the areas of body confidence, authentic empowerment and visibility. Melanie is also a successful and highly acclaimed writer, speaker and professor of sociology and women's studies. So without further ado, I am so excited for this episode with Melanie Klein. Hosts: Nick and Kisma Special Guest: Melanie Klein 04:40 The First Connection  I kind of want to give our listeners a little about story. Melanie, we met almost two years ago at an event. Melanie has this essence about her. She's very beautiful. There was something about her as a woman that was so captivating, a softness and a strength. Then I found out that you were very much involved in the yoga world… which made since to why there was a connection! Your yoga history, when did that start for you? Were you young or did it come about? Like in college? When did you find yoga? KISMA 05:02 - Perceptions  So I'm totally going to answer that question after I say it's funny to hear you reflect what you saw when you saw me the first time. Later in the episode we are going to talk about how we see ourselves versus how others see us. Because what you described is how I saw you..in fact, as much as people may see me as what you described or potentially grounded or empowered,  I'm still a human and I have my vulnerable parts and there are people who intimidate me and I remember seeing you and feeling a little intimidated. Melanie 07:22 - Yoga Beginnings The yoga question that you posed, I'd say is one half of the biggest part of my empowerment equation. In my early twenties and coming from a pretty granola family, things like yoga or spirituality were not foreign to me at all. Especially as an artist and poet, the connection that we tap into to Source when we are creative. All of those things were part of growing up, not to mention, having a very nature-based experience as a young girl living in Germany… Melanie 09:10 “I had no clue what to expect” I ended up in Kundalini class at this community college extension through this community college extension program in this old stinky fitness center on the side of the railroad tracks with these outdated, big fitness mats. We sat down and my teacher had the white turban outfit and I was like, oh, this is going to be interesting. I had no clue what to expect. Over the next few weeks my sister and I (who I was going to this class with) just kept going, and inviting others to go… this was 1996.  There were 15 to 20 people in the class, which was a lot and really weird for Kundalini yoga. Melanie 13:48  I know you've heard us talk about this, but there will be a calling, you know, whether it's intuition, whether it's a guide from the universe or God or source. I mean, my first yoga class kind of happened the same way I was living in Hong Kong. And one of my good friends said, “Hey, there's this really new yoga studio open in long Kwai Fong, let's go”.   I was so not committed, but I went to this class, it was all Indian teachers and here I am,with these beautiful Asian flexible women. I'll never forget, I think it was master, he said sit Lotus Style.  I crossed my legs and my knees are pointing to the ceiling. He looked at me in front of the whole class and say’s “what's the matter with your hips?” It was like, I don't know, you tell me. So it was like really frightening that. But the next day I remember feeling the same way. I felt different. And so I think that's when we do like we know we've just entered a practice where something has shifted and it's so important to stay with that. KISMA 15:11 - Full Circle Connection Not only do I love your story because I can relate to it for so many reasons, but also it's kind of a foreshadowing of I'm sure what we'll dig into here about the work I do around making yoga accessible for everybody and making everyone feel it's for them because like you said, stepping into something that you knew was going to essentially be a game changer for you without even knowing why or how. Melanie 32:21 - Women's Empowerment and Men My question for you is about this, I think in a lot of ways in women's empowerment there's something there for guys too, that can tip over into  feminization of the man. And I'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about those dynamics and it's like, how does everybody win in that conversation in your mind? Nick There's a lot to be said and what you just shared, Nick. A few things I want to say about that is we have to also understand, especially in the last three or four years, we have had an another massive backlash that we're currently in. So if we're looking at the second wave of feminism or what most people know is the women's liberation movement, which also coincided with the civil rights movement and the black liberation movement. And also known as the peace movement... (listen in to get the rest of Melanie's answer to this question!) 49:52 - Get to Know Melanie Give our listeners just a place where they can go and find you. I mean, what I love about Melanie, what she does for herself, she does for other women and, and this essence of empowerment has so many facets to it. So what's the best way or where do you want to direct our listeners? KISMA Melanie C. Today's guest is Melanie Klein, a professor of Sociology and Women's Studies, co-founder of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition, and author of the new book, Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body. Her work has made her a respected leader in the conversation around yoga and body image. In this interview, we talk about how she came to be such an advocate for the positive body image movement. Plus, since I am a former editor for Yoga Journal, we have a candid conversation about how media has contributed to this dialogue--for better and worse. Here are some highlights: * Melanie tells her "body story" and how yoga helped her move from an unhealthy preoccupation with her body to body acceptance * I learn the phrase "the body project" -- the idea that we spend so many resources working on our bodies in hopes that one day we'll be "perfect" -- and I feel like a giant lightbulb has been turned on. What would the world be like if women redirected all of that time, energy, money, and brain power toward other projects? * The ways that being a yoga practitioner has perpetuated "the body project" for both of us * The calling that Melanie felt to start YBIC * How yoga teacher, Bryan Kest, helped Melanie shape her views on body image Show notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode124 SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORS1.     Melanie Klein is an empowerment coach, professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at Moorpark Collect in Venura County, California, speaker, writer and thought leader in the areas of body confidence, authentic empowerment and visibility.  In addition to many other books she’s also the editor of the recently released, Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body.  She is passionate about the topic of contemporary body image politics and is making waves in creating a healthier, more positive perception of our body image.  She's been featured several times on Yoga International to talk about this topic and co-founded the Yoga and Body Image Coalition in 2014.  YBI strives to provide accessible, body-positive yoga and reflects the full range of human diversity. What an absolute thrill to talk to Melanie!!  This conversation expanded my understanding of how I relate to myself and I even had a breakthrough Aha moment (you'll definitely recognize when this is as you listen...I was ecstatic :) ).  I used to think of body image as a social issue and never considered its relation to yoga.  If I practice yoga, mindfulness and acceptance then surely I have a healthy body image right? No need to extricate this one specific thing from the big picture of accepting the whole self....right?  Turns out I was wrong.  Our body image is not only an outcome of our internal relationship with self but is also a product of the society, politics and history that shapes us.  It's so powerful that it dictates our self-worth.  It can even hold us back from reaching our full potential.  Yoga can be one of the most powerful tools to help us disentangle our distorted body image from our identities.  In this episode, Melanie and dig further in-depth into the topic of contemporary body image politics - what it is, how it affects all of us and what we can do about it, including how an authentic yoga practice can free us from the war we wage against our bodies.  Buckle in.  This one's a good one.  Read More

1:45 Introduction of Melanie Klein 3:36 In 2002, yoga culture changed. Big corporations bought yoga studios, the phenomenon of "yoga celebrities" began, advertising changed. Yoga advertising started following the lead of fitness, beauty and fashion industries. There was money to be made. 7:55 Few talking about this cultural change. The discussion of how to present another face of yoga has grown exponentially since 2010. But yoga is still being commercialised. 9:53 To change a culture, storytelling is powerful. Although what you hear is not in your experience, it can generate empathy and a willingess to be part of the discussion. It emphasises the "humanity" of people and makes it easier to see points of connection.  12:31 How do we bring the corporations into the discussion? There has been some success discussing these issues with the yoga magazines. But there are constraints on corporations in how they can react to these points. Convincing them that there is still a profit in not replicating the existing models (fitness, beauty, fashion) First step is to have discussions between the grass roots trying and corporations. 17:00 Yoga and Body Image Coalition gave visibility to many people working on their own to expand the perception of yoga. It was created 4 years ago to aggregate these individual efforts to increase reach. 26:10 New Book: Yoga Rising: Stories of Yoga Renegades. The conversation was not complete after the 1st book was published. the 1st book - Yoga and Body Image - told the stories of the benefits accruing to individuals using yoga to gain body acceptance. Book II: Yoga Rising is critiques of business and cultural models in yoga or who do you become when you reach body acceptance.  Book III:  will have the theme of yoga's effects on trauma and grief. How yoga helps with the adversities in our lives. 29:55 Advice for Yoga Today?  Really step deeply inside their practice to see if their life reflects their yoga practice. In today's podcast, we talk to Yoga Expert Lakshmi Nair about Yoga, People of Colour and Cultural Appropriation. In celebration of Black History Month, we talk about how yoga impacts our current culture. How we share yoga responsibility, and it is necessary to have brave spaces for POC to practice. Lakshmi Nair lived in the stories and philosophy of yoga and Ayurveda from a young age, Lakshmi formally studied yoga at Vivekananda Yoga Kendra and Kaivalyadhama Ashram in India in 2002. She also attended 4 years of graduate study in South Asian Studies at UC Berkeley, where she studied Sanskrit, Tamil, and contemporary South Asian literature. In 2014, Lakshmi started Satya Yoga Immersion for People of Color, one of the country’s first and perhaps only yoga immersion and teacher training programs exclusively for people of colour. Since 2014, Satya Yoga Immersion has grown into Satya Yoga Collective (www.satyayogacollective.com), a yoga collective offering yoga for people of colour by people of colour. In 2016, Lakshmi was a panellist at the 3rd annual Race and Yoga Conference at Mills College in Oakland, California and also at the Center for Trauma and Resilience's Diversifying Your Practice Symposium in Denver. She writes about her experiences as a South Asian American yoga teacher and about her journey to POC yoga in the Yoga and Body Image Coalition’s new book Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body, edited by Melanie Klein, available via Llewelyn Worldwide. Lakshmi Nair's Additional reflections on Cultural Appropriation "I appreciate when people are serious about their study of yoga, and they go to Indian sources...especially for things like Sanskrit pronunciation, etc. You know? Treat it like a language. You wouldn't try to learn French from exclusively Chinese sources, right? Also, I appreciate when people approach yoga as a spiritual tradition first and not as a business or as just a fitness modality or as a hot trend. It's hard to say how, but you can only tell when someone approaches it with the humility and respect that we humans naturally feel for the sacred. And finally, the one thing I see zero of is actual care and concern about South Asian people. If you are so into a spiritual tradition of a people, you should give a damn about the people, right? A powerful example of this is when that mass shooting happened at a gurudwara in Oak Creek, WI several years ago. I see all these white kundalini practitioners in their turbans, some of whom are making lots of money from it, and identifying with the Sikh spiritual tradition, but not identifying with the people enough to even feel anything when such a thing happens in a gurudwara, let alone show support. When you only care about the things you can consume, our food, our clothes, our cool spirituality. It just feels a lot like taking. And that is just reminiscent of colonialism. What makes something appropriation is when it mimics the colonial relationship to race and culture. Cultural appropriation is when there is just a one way to the flow of resources. Who is benefitting from the relationship? When yoga classes are all or mostly white, we can see clearly who is profiting from yoga and who is not. If we truly believed that we are all one, that would be reflected in our yoga temples, but what is indicated is that we care more about the money to be made that we do about the essence of yoga. And the people who are the haves in this society are primarily the people who historically (and currently) benefitted from colonialism. Feminism is on the rise with our first woman presidential candidate, so I thought that it's the perfect time to talk about yoga and feminism. My guest today is Beth Berila, yoga teacher, is the Director of the Women's Studies Program at St. Cloud State University and is part of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition. Some wonderful insights from this episode on body image: Women learn from a very young age that our worth is often discerned by how we look. Regardless of how loved we are as children, we are saturated with harmful media messages. Even the people who fit the "standard" still don't feel like they are enough. Yoga can help us disrupt those standards and give us a more empowered way of relating to ourselves and each other. Hear Beth's challenging statement, "Our self talk is ALL learned self talk." Yoga helps us recognize that our story lines (monkey mind) are not the truth. We come back to our wholeness underneath our learned behaviors. You'll love her four step process for moving towards wholeness in a yoga practice. Feminism teaches us about social construction of beliefs. Our clear, empowered self is often mired in issues about body image, racism, homophobia, etc. Hear her own story about how feminism helped her find her voice, but also how yoga helped her come out of her head and into her body. And I LOVE our conversation about the process of change-making! Find the show notes for this episode at Yoga Stories Project.com HERE.
