Hear me out please! Have the women in your audience ever wondered what they could accomplish with the time they spend worrying about their body or appearance? In a society overwhelmed with messages of how women should be and appear, it's easy for them to internalize these ideas and become their own harshest critics. It's time for a change. It's time to stop squashing women into painfully tight “should-be” boxes and celebrate their bodies for what they are—divine tools to reach our highest aspirations and experience the full fabulousness of life. In this book, women find a practical program for healing body image dissatisfaction using a unique blend of wisdom—from yoga to Buddhism and Taoism to shamanism and more. Weaving the author's own experiences with tools for putting lessons into action, this empowering book will help the audience examine their own thoughts and feelings about their bodies and learn how they affect the way you relate in and to the world. With this unflinchingly direct and honest book, women will learn to release years of negative conditioning to see themselves as the fiercely authentic women they really are. It's time for women to stop wasting time and energy hating their bodies and to start moving toward a life that celebrates their body's unique strengths and capabilities for experiencing health, happiness, and true radiance. In an interview on your program Erica can discuss: The challenges she has faced with her own body image issues How body image shapes mental health and wellness The power of healthy body image on physical fitness and strength The benefits of these sustainable lessons for maintaining a healthy body image What the biggest obstacles are in women's minds around loving their bodies Some of the tools she speaks about in this book How she brings her knowledge down to a practical level so every woman can understand and much more! “Your Body, Your Best Friend is the ultimate guide for how to feel amazing in your own skin. Erica skillfully inspires and prompts you to shed the habitual behaviors, obsessive thoughts, and negative self-talk that can get in the way of compassion, love, and joy. She makes radical acceptance accessible.” —Tasha Eichenseher, former brand director at Yoga Journal, and yoga teacher “This book is everything! For a start, Erica reminds us that we are not alone in our body confusion. She teaches us why this has happened with smarts and clarity that allow us to feel smart, too. Then she empowers us through meditations, journaling, and sensory awakenings that help us find our way home again—home to our own, good bodies that are just the right size to hold all the love and pain and beauty of real life. I'm giving this book to all my women friends.” —Cyndi Lee, founder of, OM Yoga, and author of Yoga Body, Buddha Mind, and May I Be Happy

Thomas Van Breda is a scholar of religion specialising in the western esoteric tradition. He joins us to discuss notorious occultist Aleister Crowley and his contribution to the evolution of modern yoga. In 1901, Crowley travelled to Sri Lanka and studied what seems to be a mixture of Ashtanga and Shaivite Yoga. When he returned to the UK and started teaching. Is it possible that he was one of the first western yoga teachers ever? Or did his bombastic and strange personality only obscure these teachings?Show Notes- We discuss the occult and rejected knowledge systems- Crowley’s problematic personality- How Crowley saw enlightenment and how he claimed to have attained it- We respond to Mark Singleton’s 2010 book “Yoga Body: the Origins of Modern Posture Practice” that claims Crowley was a “black magician” who obscured the message of yoga- How Crowley taught asana before Krishnamacharya, the old school way- Crowley’s experiments and achieving dyana and samadhi statesCrowley's "Eight Lectures on Yoga" PDF: http://www.metaphysicspirit.com/books/Eight%20Lectures%20on%20Yoga.pdf

#024: Daniel Simpson Scott talks to Daniel Simpson, on his life as a yoga philosophy teacher and practitioner. Daniel presents ancient texts for modern times. He is the author of The Truth of Yoga, a comprehensive guide to the historic tradition and texts of yoga for contemporary practitioners. We'd like to invite you to join our growing Stillpoint Online Ashtanga Yoga and Mindfulness community. We live stream beginner classes, Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes with evening mindfulness sessions over 6 days with Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. It's a beautiful way to navigate these times... Daniel Simpson's work is informed by his master's degree in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation (SOAS, University of London), and draws on his earlier experience as a foreign correspondent. He combines scholarly knowledge with humour and insight, making yoga philosophy accessible and relevant to practitioners today. Daniel teaches courses online, at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, at Triyoga in London, around the UK and internationally. With two decades of experience, he aims to help students explore their own path. You can find out more about Daniel’s work and courses here. You can also purchase Daniel's book - The Truth of Yoga - here. The Truth of Yoga - Daniel Simpson Scott and Daniel have known each other since 2015 and in that time Daniel has become a highly regarded yoga philosophy teacher and academic. In this wide ranging conversation they share insights and stories on the last 15 years of change in the yoga world surrounding how yoga philosophy and history is taught. Daniel also shares personal stories and insights from his own life that compelled him to write his new book - The Truth Of Yoga. In this wide ranging conversation Daniel shares: About his euphoric experience during a silent meditation retreat, which completely transformed his relationship with the world and himself. How this transcendent experience transformed his asana practise into a practise of embodied consciousness, a physical practise for training the mind. His thoughts on the relationship between hedonism and spirituality. The connection between Vedic soma rituals and yoga, and the relationship between soma and ayahuasca. How yoga can become an addiction in itself, and about learning to identify and deal with these patterns. That the project of yoga was never about experiencing bliss, but an extreme solution for escaping samsara. About his book - The Truth of Yoga, which distills complex ideas into an accessible format His response to the question: ‘What is yoga?’ His previous work as a journalist and his move into academia, and how both have influenced his approach to writing. Why accuracy is important when presenting historic texts about yoga. The enduring effect of Yoga Body by Mark Singleton and how it influenced the academic study of physical yoga That he hopes his book ‘The Truth of Yoga’ will be used as a bridge between academic researchers and yoga practitioners. About the different and contradictory threads of yoga: dual and non-dual, householder and renunciate. How we can maintain traditional aspects in contemporary physical yoga. About his first trip to India, and his experience of attending the Kumbh Mela in 2001. How yoga ultimately helped him recognise, understand and deal with his issues with substance abuse. How yoga scholarship is a form of practise, a discipline in itself. How living a contemplative life is all about relationship: how we relate to the moment, relate to ourselves, and relate to others. A moment-by-moment engagement with reality. Daniel is a breath of fresh air. His knowledge on the philosophy and history of yoga is so deep yet he is able to share it in a beautifully open, simple and understandable way. I loved having this conversation with Daniel and got so much from it. This is a must for people interested in how the teaching of yoga philosophy and history has changed over the past 10 - 15 years.. Scott Johnson - January 2020 If you enjoyed this podcast then you might also enjoy Scott’s conversations with Dr Matthew Clark, Taylor Hunt and Zephyr Wildman.
Welcome back to BeREAL! This week, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Paris Alexandra to discuss diversity within the yoga community and body positivity. Paris Alexandra is an Artist and Creative Wellness Practitioner (IIN). As a 200 hour Registered Yoga teacher (RTY) & Healing Arts facilitator, Paris utilizes song, poetry, and movement to inspire self love and transform narratives in beauty, health, & the arts. As a wellness practitioner she supports curvy athletes and creatives in growing lifestyle habits that honor the body, increase vitality, and ignite their creative lives. Paris begins the episode by introducing herself and her yoga practice, BK Yoga Club. She explains that BK Yoga Club is a black owned practice whose goals are to promote body positivity and welcome new people to yoga, who maybe thought it was not for them based on how they looked. Paris then tells the backstory of how it came to fruition by the hands of Paris and her co-founder, Alicia Ferguson. Next, she gives an overview of what BK Yoga Club looks like today (two years in) and announces that they are opening their first storefront in Bedstuy in January. Next, Paris tells listeners about how she got into yoga herself. She explains that she was the only black and plus size woman in her yoga classes, and that inspired her to make the yoga community open to a more diverse group of people. On top of that, she would like to redefine what healthy looks like. She hopes other people can learn the lessons she learned through yoga: self acceptance and body positivity. Ednesha also brings up that yoga is not something new to black women, but many people choose to overlook that many historical black women practiced yoga. After a break, Paris explains what the desired BK yogi looks like. The desired yogi is anyone! BK Yoga Club is a place for people of all races, sizes, and backgrounds. These yogis can take BK Yoga Club classes during the pandemic through the new BK Yoga Club app that will be releasing soon. They are also offering classes with therapists during the pandemic, to help maintain both positive mental and physical health. Thank you so much for tuning into BeREAL this week. Use your words to honor where your bodies is, connect to how you feel and choose what serves you best, what is right for your body. Shame and punishment do not yield long term results.2- Body neutrality is respecting our bodies no matters how you feel about it that day.3- Ask yourself why you need to comment on someone else's body appearance and how often you do it, why you do it and how it might impact them. You have no idea about what they are going through. 4- Gender is more complicated than genitalia : There is the gender that is assigned to you at birth from genitalia , so your body (note that there's as many inner sex people as red hair), there's your identity (how do you identify) and your social expression of it (how to you dress, present yourself to the world).5- The use of new pronouns needs practice. It's like learning a new language. It's not about being perfect but making the effort to attempt to use them. Try reading a book out-loud and changing the pronouns to they/them, or write sentences and read them out-loud. If you're talking and struggle use the person's first name instead. If you make a mistake, correct and move-on.QUESTIONS THEY ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:How can we approach fitness and yoga with a body-neutral way of cuing? How do move away from using shame and punishment as motivation? What's the difference about body positivity and body neutrality for you? What has did you time/recovery from ED taught you about your body and influences the way you teach? How do we move the society needle on fat-fobia? What can we do as individuals? You describe yourself as “queer-poly-married-non-binary-they/them” and say that scares you, I’ll make it not. Lucas Rockwood - the founder of Yoga Body. What a blessing. Lucas is so kind and generous with his worldly wisdom and his precious time. Lucas and I have this in common. We were scared into living a healthier life. This conversation had me taking notes on top of notes. I could go on and on about what I extracted from this interview. The big 3 takeaways for me are balance, getting out of our comfort zone to (and I quote) “ Experience being human” and that there is no mind body connection, mind and body are one. I discovered Lucas on youtube researching information on oxygen and breathing. His TEDx talk on this very subject has over a million views and he explains even more about the categories of the breath in this episode. Here is the link to his TEDx talk on Coffee, Whiskey & Water https://bit.ly/LucasTEDxTalk Lucas Rockwood's Bio: In 2002, I worked for a New York City book publisher doing a job I hated. I drank seven nights a week, abused drugs, and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. For food, it was pizza and takeout—anything quick and easy to keep me going. No one consciously decides to destroy their health, but over the years, that's exactly what happened. I was bloated and flabby, unable to sleep without alcohol. My eyes were red and puffy, and I struggled to get excited about anything. I had so much potential, so many opportunities, but when you're sick and numb to the world, everything feels impossible and uninteresting. Enter yoga. A friend dragged me to a yoga studio, where I suffered through one of the most uncomfortable experiences of my life. In that first class, I was sweating and dizzy, unable to do even the most basic postures. I was the youngest person there, but the way I moved, I felt like I was 90 years old. I couldn't bend forward, sit cross-legged on the floor, or balance in a tree pose. Looking at myself in the mirror, I remember thinking, “How did I end up in such bad shape?” I hated that first class so much, I knew it was exactly what I needed—so I kept going. People assume yoga classes are meant to be wonderful, peaceful experiences. This is not true. A good class should be the most challenging and uncomfortable hour of your entire day. When you push yourself on the mat, real-life problems become lighter and more manageable almost immediately. Hard yoga = easy life. For the next 380 days, I practiced yoga every single day. While traveling, I used audio or video recordings. If I was in a new city, I'd go to any studio I could find. When my teacher told me to take a day off to rest, I'd ignore the advice and go to a class at another studio. The same way I'd fallen in love with things that were killing me (drugs and alcohol), I'd now fallen in love with something that was feeding me and fueling my growth. Life is about learning to adapt and let things go that no longer serve us. Today on the podcast I had on a friend, Lola Berry. Lola is someone who has mastered the art of letting go of what doesn’t serve her and being compassionate to herself in the process. She is a nutritionist, author, accredited yoga teacher, content creator, presenter, speaker, podcaster and entrepreneur who has a colorful approach to nutrition. In this episode, we chat about why failures need to be celebrated and about cultivating a willingness to learn, take a chance and see how things go. We talk about a few of her entrepreneurial endeavors including her shift from a smoothie business to a coffee business and her experience of going back to school to study acting. She also talks about the importance of keeping people around who are cheering you on and why she thinks everyone should have a therapist. (This episode was pre-recorded on February 11, 2020) What’s in this episode: How Lola and Amy met each other The idea of learning through your struggles and how this brought on Lola’s podcast Why failures need to be celebrated How Lola’s cultivated all of her passions into her purpose Her transition from a smoothie business to a coffee business How writing her book, The Happy Life, helped her through a tricky heartbreak Her advice for people who are nervous to take the next steps What a typical day looks like for Lola Why Lola is studying acting and how she discovered her passion for filming How Lola has learned to let go of what’s no longer serving her Learning to have self-compassion and how to channel your energy into positivity Keeping people around you who are rooting for you Why you shouldn’t base your worth depending on the Instagram algorithm Her advice for someone struggling to prioritize their health and wellness About Lola:Lola Berry is a nutritionist, author, accredited yoga teacher, content creator, presenter, speaker, podcaster and entrepreneur. She’s very colorful. She’s very passionate. She’s very Australian. Over the years she’s admired Steve Irwin and always wanted to bring that passion and enthusiasm to any project she focuses on. Lola’s colourful approach to nutrition is supported by the Bachelor of Health Science she completed at Endeavour College of Natural Health, where she majored in Nutritional Medicine. Her nutrition studies propelled her to write ten books – Inspiring Ingredients, The 20/20 Diet, The 20/20 Diet Cookbook, Lola Berry’s Little Book of Smoothies and Juices, The Happy Cookbook, The Happy Life, Lola Berry’s Summer Food, Food to Make You Glow, Beauty Food and The Yoga Body. In 2017 Lola opened Happy Place by Lola Berry, a smoothie bar co-created with Salvatore Malatesta from St Ali. After a successful 3 year run, the South Melbourne smoothie bar closed its doors so Lola could focus on her new venture – Lola Coffee. Lola launched Lola Coffee to the market in August 2019 and the first batch sold out within hours! The brew is a speciality instant coffee with lion’s mane; it’s a healthy, insane brain tonic coffee. Concurrently in 2019, Lola focused on media work. She completed courses and training in TV presenting (special focus on reading autocue), acting, dialect and voice work. Each of these are aimed at helping build her skill set as a professional speaker, TV presenter and professional media talent. She also launched Fearlessly Failing with Lola Berry – an interview podcast about failures with guests including Megan Gale, Georgia Love and Olivia White. Lola loves to interview people about the lessons and failures that have ultimately led to people's success. It’s the “not so shiny times'' that actually shape us and make us stronger. Lola created, hosts and produces (with Matt Sofo) the podcast. Lola is a highly sought after expert for speaking, nutrition consulting, cooking demonstrations and yoga classes. Lola is also very passionate about mental health and talks about it being the key to all elements of health. Lola’s message is to be real, be kind and chase your dreams, no matter how big they are. Tejal Patel and Jesal Parikh are yoga teachers and the hosts of the Yoga is Dead podcast. In their own words: "Yoga is Dead is a revolutionary podcast that explores power, privilege, fair pay, harassment, race, cultural appropriation and capitalism in the yoga and wellness worlds. Join Indian-American hosts Tejal + Jesal as they expose all the monsters lurking under the yoga mat." Jo and Rane love the podcast and were super excited to catch up with Jesal and Tejal! Yoga is Dead has taken the yoga world by storm with their honest yet humourous approach to these important issues and were eager to find out more about the women behind the podcast. In this conversation, we learn about Tejal and Jesal's backgrounds growing up in the suburbs of Massachusetts and Michigan in the United States. We learn about some of their motivations in starting the podcast, how they chose the name and whether they have an end goal in mind. There is a great conversation on cultural appropriation, and we ask them whether Mark Singleton's book Yoga Body is a form of whitewashing. these were the words of my x-lover towards me. we can't date, you don't have a yoga body. starting to come into his spiritual practice, I knew that this had nothing to do with me. Yet I can hear those words in my head playing over and over, what was spirit trying to tell me? hiding in my own self-sabotaging body image thoughts, I was frazzled by his words. Yet I can see this obese being coming out of him. I knew right there this remark had nothing to do with me, just like all other imprints, this was just another one and I had control if I wanted to make it mine or not. I choose not too.. I chose to continue beating myself up with my own thoughts, I didnt need to have another to excelerate my suffering I was doing a great job on my own... Born and bred in Melbourne, it doesn't seem overly necessary to give the uber successful Lola Berry a formal introduction. The nutritionist, regular TV guest, author and owner of Happy Place Smoothie Bar here in Melbourne, Lola quickly gained the attention of Australians when she lost 20 kilograms in just 20 weeks by adopting a paleo inspired diet.Lola's transformation sparked the release of her first two books The 20/20 Diet and The 20/20 Cook Book and today the energetic, happy go lucky foodie is the author of 10 incredible books. The queen of the kitchen in our eyes, but some would say Lola has had more than her fair share of backlash and negative criticism. In this interview Lola speaks about how she deals with the naysayers and despite them continues to thrive. In line with the release of her 10th book The Yoga Body, which we must add is absolutely incredible and potentially her best yet, we chat to this laid back babe about what it takes to truly live your truth, how to continue to always run your own race and what spiritual practices help keep her grounded.

1:45 Introduction of Melanie Klein 3:36 In 2002, yoga culture changed. Big corporations bought yoga studios, the phenomenon of "yoga celebrities" began, advertising changed. Yoga advertising started following the lead of fitness, beauty and fashion industries. There was money to be made. 7:55 Few talking about this cultural change. The discussion of how to present another face of yoga has grown exponentially since 2010. But yoga is still being commercialised. 9:53 To change a culture, storytelling is powerful. Although what you hear is not in your experience, it can generate empathy and a willingess to be part of the discussion. It emphasises the "humanity" of people and makes it easier to see points of connection. 12:31 How do we bring the corporations into the discussion? There has been some success discussing these issues with the yoga magazines. But there are constraints on corporations in how they can react to these points. Convincing them that there is still a profit in not replicating the existing models (fitness, beauty, fashion) First step is to have discussions between the grass roots trying and corporations. 17:00 Yoga and Body Image Coalition gave visibility to many people working on their own to expand the perception of yoga. It was created 4 years ago to aggregate these individual efforts to increase reach. 26:10 New Book: Yoga Rising: Stories of Yoga Renegades. The conversation was not complete after the 1st book was published. the 1st book - Yoga and Body Image - told the stories of the benefits accruing to individuals using yoga to gain body acceptance. Book II: Yoga Rising is critiques of business and cultural models in yoga or who do you become when you reach body acceptance. Book III: will have the theme of yoga's effects on trauma and grief. How yoga helps with the adversities in our lives. 29:55 Advice for Yoga Today? Really step deeply inside their practice to see if their life reflects their yoga practice. How have you taken your yoga off the mat? The rise of yoga in the West has also seen the rise of the Instagram Yogis and this idea that yoga is only meant to serve white, flexible, able bodied women. Jessamyn Stanley, yoga teacher, author of Every Body Yoga, and body positivity advocate, challenges these norms. In this interview, she shares her thoughts on the practice of yoga, the shadow side of body positivity, cultural appropriation, and how she navigates her large online presence. Enjoy! In this episode, Diane speaks with Lucas Rockwood about easy yoga techniques you can apply even if you're busy. Manage your stress and other areas of mental health without resorting to cheats like alcohol or caffeine. Lucas Rockwood is the founder of the Absolute Yoga Academy which is one of the top ten yoga training schools around the world with 2000 certified teacher. He's a weight loss expert, health coach, TV personality, radio show host and acclaimed writer. He's also the founder of Yoga Body, which is an internationally renowned nutrition, education and publishing organization that serves 81 countries. What you will learn: How Lucas' toxic lifestyle pattern of abusing drugs, alcohol, and food led him to self-destruction, but then led to his discovery of yoga and healthy eating Why the "breath" component of yoga is so important to integrate with stretching to get that nervous system workout in addition to the physical one Why the yoga works: placing your body in an uncomfortable or stressful situation for long periods of time trains you to respond to stress with calmness How the benefits of yoga transfer into your everyday life and how to find the relaxation tool that is the right fit for you What to do even if you're a busy professional who doesn't have time to attend a yoga class Important breathing techniques you can use anywhere, even at your desk or in the car Water breathing and how to pace your breathing to achieve balance without any of the "crazy" techniques such as holding your breath underwater How to use yoga to find focus, stability, and energy Quotes: "If you've found something that's working, absolutely stick with it. But if you're still looking, give yoga a try to see if it's for you. Some people have found that caring for their dogs and taking for their dogs for a walk is meditation or mindfulness practice to relieve stress. If that works for you, awesome. Other people need crossfit, to flip tires in empty parking lots. If that's what works for you, great." "Most people listening are looking at their mental and physical health and seeing shattered glass. There's broken stuff all around. We're looking for ways to glue those pieces back together. Yoga can play a part to be some of the glue that puts those broken pieces back together." "You want to feel balanced, you want to be present, you want to show up for your marriage, you want to show up for your kids, you want to show up for your work and have steady state energy, clarity of mind. Your focus is that 4 to 6 breaths per minute, it's that balanced breathing, it's that water breath. That's where you want to put most of your energy." This is the last episode of Season 3! As we wrap up, I wanted to share my everyday yoga and body acceptance practices -- the tools in my toolbox that I choose from on a regular basis. I wanted to share these because I think so often it can seem like everyone else's practice is more time-consuming, important, or glamorous than yours. So in this episode, I dispel that myth -- at least about my own practice. ;) Show notes: curvyyoga.com/podcast/my-everyday-yoga-body-acceptance-practices-season-3-episode-29
