"Love is risky. Love always ends. Should you do it anyway?” - Nicola YoonLove is a feeling that never exists solely on its own, and those likely companions to love (anxiety, grief) often bring questions such as, is this worth it? It's this question and others like it that Nicola Yoon explores in each of her novels. Nicola is a hopeless romantic. The affliction began in childhood after the discovery of her aunt's harlequin romance collection. From then on, Nicola's love of love would only grow stronger. But while her passion for romance was a love at first sight, her passion for writing was more of a slow burn.Today, Nicola Yoon boasts an impressive resume as a two-time New York Times bestselling author, a finalist for the National Book Award, a recipient of the Michael L. Printz Honor Book, and a winner of the Coretta Scott King New Talent Award. Notably, her first two novels have been successfully adapted for the big screen. In this episode, she'll tell us why she fell in love with the romance genre, and how she found her way to writing as a career after 15 years in finance. She also shares her own ridiculously cute, out-of-a-movie love story about how she ended up with her husband and fellow writer, David Yoon. ***Connect with Jordan and The Reading Culture @thereadingculturepod and subscribe to our newsletter at thereadingculturepod.com/newsletter. ***Inspired by her own novel, "Instructions for Dancing,” in her reading challenge, Good Grief, Nicola invites us to explore the intersection of love and grief with a list of some of her favorite books. You can find her list and all past reading challenges at thereadingculturepod.com.Today's Beanstack Featured Librarian is Nikki Hayter, a library manager with the Des Moines Public Library system. We're bacccck! Did you miss us? It's been a wild couple weeks with Angela's debut
We are in the most anxious time in human history - yet how do we still create compelling, joyful art and be a sane human being at the same time? We're back with the second part of our talk with rising singer-songwriter Raye Zaragoza who is celebrating the release of her striking new LP Hold That Spirit. We talk about her mother's trying immigrant story told through her song “Change Your Name” and trying to forget all your internal and external haters in “Joy Revolution” and best of all - we feature an exclusive acoustic performance of her track “Garden” which has not left this podcasters head for the last month straight.
Raye Zaragoza is our guest today and we are chatting about her new album, Hold That Spirit, set for release on August 11. Listening to the album, I can tell this is an artist who is not afraid to get personal and bare her soul through her art. Beyond talking about these new songs, this episode goes into some of Ray's more personal moments, including breaking off a wedding engagement and using those funds to produce this album, as well as her battles with an eating disorder. I found Raye and her music to be inspirational and honest, a testament to how we are not alone in our struggles. https://www.rayezaragoza.com/ Check out the video for "Joy Revolution" https://youtu.be/Lt3LvpOxDVk https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. The Golden Mic Podcast w/ Marc Cordon Ep. 0111 The Power of Unlearning w/ Ingrid Harb https://play.goldenmicpodcast.com/0111_harb "It's going inwards so that I can fill myself up and have more to give." - Ingrid Harb Ingrid never really fit in a box or category. She was born and raised in Mexico and then went to Texas for boarding school. So at times, she was too Mexican for the norms of an American boarding school. And in returning to Mexico, she was almost too American for her Mexican colleagues. Either she was Mexican, or she was an American. And while she admits that she initially struggled with the "either/or" mentality, Ingrid began to think about what a "both/and" mindset is - one where she claims an identity where she was both American and Mexican and beyond. To fully embrace a "both/and" identity, Ingrid needed to unlearn the categories and boxes that limit so many of us. As a result, this mindset has changed the way she views social justice, identity and spirituality. On November 12, 2022, Ingrid will step on the red circle at TEDxOcala to take her message of unlearning to the masses, and you get to hear her here first. She was exhausted after working a late Christmas Eve shift. She knocked again. No answer. Tears began to run down her face. In shock, she walked elsewhere. Through no fault, India was kicked out by her mother, who battled addiction. She didn't know how to make it, and understandably so. She was just a teenager. Yet her faith and grit helped her to focus on her academics. Her faith and grit helped her grieve the loss of four family members while in the shelter. And her faith and grit helped her to persist to complete, not one degree but three degrees from the University of Florida. On November 12, 2022, Dr. India White will make a new home for herself at TEDxOcala and share her story of the power of grit. The Joy Revolution and TEDxOcala proudly present... The Golden Mic Podcast w/ Marc Cordon Ep. 0108 The 4th Trimester: The Power of a Doctor & Her Black Bag/w Dr Sonal Patel https://play.goldenmicpodcast.com/0108_patel Meet Sonal, a mother of four boys. During her pregnancy, Sonal was the Hollywood prototype of a pregnant woman - a perfectly round belly, glowing skin, and luscious flowing hair. But life after birth was much different for Sonal. Postpartum tore her apart physically, emotionally, and mentally - leaky, engorged breasts accompanied by waves of intense pelvic pain, diapers on both baby and her, a sense of isolation, and tears never portrayed in any Hollywood blockbuster. Sonal is a physician, specifically a pediatrician further trained in neonatology. Her story concerning postpartum, or the 4th trimester, is not an isolated tale. Many women undergo it far worse. Serena Williams, the greatest of women's tennis, almost died after her c-section. She developed a pulmonary embolism, a lung clot, requiring two surgical operations, and spent her first six weeks of motherhood in bed, half her 4th trimester. In doing more research on the 4th trimester, the statistics are staggering. America's maternal mortality rate of 23.8 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births ranks last in first world nations though spending the most in healthcare dollars. The lastest data reported in September 2022 showed that 22% mothers die in pregnancy, while 78% die after birth, with 25% in the first week of delivery. 4 in 5 deaths are preventable.Interstate disparities find that a mother in Georgia has ten times higher chance of dying versus a California mother.Among black women, maternal mortality is three times higher than that of her white counterparts. Extrapolating the data further, a black woman's higher education level and socioeconomic status does not protect her from these alarming disparities.Women are income-earners through outside avenues of employment as well as through traditional household duties. A new mother's unexpected death not only leaves behind a newborn and maybe other children, but jolts a household's economic foundation. In 2022, the Council of Foreign Relations estimated that if women were part of the US labor force at the same rate as men, America's economy would grow by $4.3 trillion in five years. As Dr. Patel says, "There must be a better way." ...and a better way for the 4th trimester will take everyone. Sonal is doing her part. After her own experience, Dr. Sonal Patel transitioned from her Neonatal ICU job and began a new career as a traveling 4th-trimester doctor. She wrote the book, "The Doctor & Her Black Bag: How Old-Fashioned Care Tackles Maternal Mortality and Benefits America's Economy" In the spirit of bringing awareness to the 4th trimester, Dr. Patel will speak at TEDxOcala. Dr. Patel will be talking about how the failure not to action during the 4th trimester impacts everyone. If ever a time for you to subscribe to The Golden Mic Podcast, it's now as I have the privilege of having a conversation with many of the speakers you'll see at TEDxOcala 2022: The Power of... The Joy Revolution and TEDxOcala proudly present... The Golden Mic Podcast w/ Marc Cordon Ep. 072 Mental Illness: Starting The Conversation https://lnkj.in/t/gmp_072mclean At sixteen I was worried about getting my license and talking to one of my best friends Marco about who we liked in our sister Catholic school. For Julie McLean, the story couldn't be more different. Julie held a broken glass bottle and thought about taking her life. This was the beginning of her becoming a champion for people affected by mental illness. As you'll hear in this podcast, mental illness is still stigmatized...where people treat mental illness as a sort of thing that can be controlled or some lack of virtue. It's not. And at TEDxOcala, Julie will be sharing her story about the need for everyone to start the conversation around mental illness. The Joy Revolution & Marc Cordon present The Golden Mic Podcast Ep. 67 On Reconnecting With Soul w/ GP Walsh https://play.goldenmicpodcast.com/0068_walsh “Look closer,” said a disembodied voice as a younger, angrier, stoned GP Walsh stood on a small foot bridge looking down into a lifelessly polluted river. “Look really close,” it said. And in that micro-moment, GP did just that. He began to shrink. He shrank so much that GP was in the river viewing something incredibly profound. He saw that the molecules of the river's pristine water were not bonded with the pollution. There was a clear distinction between the two. It was a metaphor for GP's life. Despite living an ostensibly purposeless life… Despite the wreckage that drugs were causing him… Despite his first memory of being tied to a bed and consequently being punished for wetting it.. GP was perfect. He was loved. The God-sized hole began to shrink. He started a long journey of healing. Here's the thing, everyone experiences early trauma whether quickly or slowly through micro-aggressions. They're stored in the body. When it reaches a certain threshold, the soul gets disconnected. Everyone experiences it. As GP says. “Nobody gets out of childhood alive.” Not me. Not you. So how do you reconnect from the soul? Listen on.

Two episodes this week! Huzzah! Today we're joined by the extremely delightful, extremely brilliant Nicola Yoon to discuss her extremely romantic new book, Instructions for Dancing, and YA Romance in general! We talk about Nicola's love of romance novels (which she shares with the heroine of her book), about her history with them, and about what makes YA Romance so extremely delicious. We also talk about her new project with the Obamas and her new imprint for young readers at Random House. Our next read along (next week! we told you it was coming!) is Cat Sebastian's wonderful Unmasked by the Marquess. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, or Bookshop.org. Thank you, as always, for listening! Please follow us on your favorite podcasting app, and if you are up for leaving a rating or review there, we would be very grateful!Show NotesWelcome Nicola Yoon! Along with Instructions for Dancing, she and five other Black women authors just published the Blackout anthology, which has been picked up by the Obamas for TV and film for Netflix.Nicola and her husband David Yoon are also creating the Yooniverse, including a new YA romance imprint called Joy Revolution at Random House.Poltergeist and its infamous curse scared everyone back in the 80. Nicola wasn't sure what imprint she was reading when she found her first romance under her aunt's bed, but she mentioned Harlequin Blaze, one of our all time favorite imprints which was shuttered in 2017. Just a quick reminder that HFN means “happy for now” and HEA means “happily ever after.” YA has evolved over time, a process which has ramped up in the past 20 years and is now a publishing juggernaut. YA is far more progressive that adult romance, but also grapples with the influence of adultreaders of all kinds and gatekeepers who want to stop kids from reading about sex & gender, race, and other issues around identity. According to the Library of Congress, most of the earliest entries from Urban Dictionary date back to 2003.Before Covid, It used to be hard to explain the terrifying rise of HIV was in the 1980s, along with the way the Reagan administration ignored the epidemic. This timeline tells the history of the HIV/AIDS crisis, and here is an explainer for why Covid vaccinations were developed so fast when we still don't have one for HIV.The Heads of Your Enemies as love language appears in Shadow's Claim, when Trehan literally gives this gift to Bettina while they are courting. The Wrath and the Dawn is a retelling of the Scheherazade story, which is the framing device for The Arabian Nights. If you are GenX or Millenial and were a reader, you'll love the book Paperback Crush: The Totally Radical History of 80s and 90s Teen Fiction. It's full of images, so read it in paper or on a full-color reading device!Jessica Trent is a different thing entirely than Jessica Wakefield. Along with other changes, the Sweet Valley High twins are size 4 now, which we don't like at all. I Believe in a Thing Called Love was also just optioned for Netflix, but they aren't going to have much luck checking The Wirecutter for road spike recommendations, because this was the closest thing I could find to them.“The Hellmouth or whatever,” is a reference to Sunnydale, the setting of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You can pre-order signed copies of Sarah's Bombshell from WORD in Brooklyn, and you'll get a Fated Mates sticker with your signed book!
