On this West Virginia Morning, author Mesha Maren's new novel, Perpetual West, uses characters to look at Appalachia from the perspective of an outsider. Also, in this show, the Allegheny Front, brings us its latest story on plant love stories.

When news happens along the U.S.-Mexico border, stories about the region are often filled with statistics about crime or the consequences of policies that fail to address migration from the south to the north. But fiction often tells a more nuanced truth than straightforward reporting, and that's what writer Mesha Maren does in her new novel, “Perpetual West.” It examines the misinformation and misperceptions that endure about the borderlands, even as it pulls readers in with a mysterious disappearance. Newlyweds Alex and Elena have just moved to El Paso, Texas — a city that is economically, socially and politically entwined with its twin on the other side of the border, Ciudad Juarez. As Alex explores his roots in Mexico, he becomes deeply enamored with Mateo, a masked luchador who competes in the world of lucha libre, Mexican professional wrestling. And then Alex goes missing. To write the book, Maren mined her own history of living in El Paso and discovering a more complicated story about the region than the one she initially believed. She also took professional wrestling lessons, in order to accurately convey the culture and rituals of lucha libre. (Spoiler alert: she wasn't a natural.) This week, MPR host Kerri Miller talked with Maren about how our identities can be bound up in a place, what Maren realized while teaching prison inmates to write and what she learned during those infamous wrestling lessons. Please help me find another Halloween book. -Heather 3. hello! i’ve been craving for some lighthearted witchy reads lately. i’ve read “labyrinth lost” by zoraida córdova, “children of blood and bone” by tomi adeyemi which are great, and have in my tbr pile “the bone witch” and “the heart forger” by rin chupeco. all these titles are pretty dark and, while i love my books that have witches constantly raising the dead, i could really use some bubbly, cute, less ‘everyone is gonna kill me’ witchy reads. (and if you could sprinkle in some lgbt in there, that would be amazing). -Myra 4. I identify as asexual and don’t often get to see that aspect of myself reflected on the page. I’ve scoured the internet and read everything I could find with ace characters: Let’s Talk About Love, Tash Hearts Tolstoy, The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy to name a few. But the lists are fairly limited. I’m open to books that don’t explicitly use the term “asexual” but that have characters that lend themselves to being read as ace (a favorite of mine is Kaz from Six of Crows, for example). Unfortunately, that’s a very difficult thing to search for. Can you recommend any more books that feature characters I might see myself in? I’m open to any genre.
