Careers and the Business of Law
THE INFRASTRUCTURE LAYER OF THE BUSINESS OF LAW WITH TOM BALDWIN

Careers and the Business of Law

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2026 30:29

Hosted by David Cowen | Careers and the Business of Law Everyone's talking about Harvey, Legora, Spellbook, and Ivo. Nobody's talking about what they ride on top of. Tom Baldwin - founder and CEO of Entegrata, former CIO at Foley, Sheppard Mullin, Reed Smith, and Cadwalader - argues the real story is data infrastructure. Without a single source of truth, every AI tool in your firm is working from a partial picture. WHY THIS MATTERS? If your firm is buying AI tools without auditing the data underneath them, this is your warning shot. Tom's framing: toaster ovens need an electrical grid. KEY TAKEAWAYS AI tools work on narrow tasks, not whole-firm intelligence. 50 asset purchase agreements? Great. 200 million documents? No. Pulling documents out of your DMS strips away the metadata that makes them valuable - judge, opposing counsel, area of law, industry. That context is what AI actually needs. Business-of-law use cases (lateral prediction, cross-sell, client attrition, FP&A) are wide open. Practice of law got all the attention. A data lakehouse unifies data across 20-40 systems. Snowflake popularized it; Azure/Databricks/Fabric are the modern stacks.  Cost is roughly the same at 200 lawyers or 2,000 - six figures, ongoing. Compute and storage are cheap; talent is the investment. Firms move from "nice to have" to "must have" after a near-miss. Tom's example: a firm almost fired an associate because their FTE calc didn't account for maternity leave. The chief data officer is becoming a real C-suite role. Sidley's among the early movers. Watch the forward-deployed legal engineer trend. Harvey is hiring practitioners for these roles. PEOPLE MENTIONED David Cowen - Host Tom Baldwin - Entegrata founder & CEO Andrew Sieja- Founder of kCura/Relativity; Entegrata's first angel investor Renee Morris, Katrina Dittmer, Glenn LaForce - Data leaders Tom mentioned COMPANIES AND TOOLS MENTIONED Entegrata - Turnkey data lakehouse in Azure Snowflake, Azure, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric - Data platform stacks Harvey, Legora, Spellbook, Ivo - Practice-of-law AI tools Sidley Austin - Early adopter of the chief data officer role

Money is pouring into legal AI,  but how do top-tier investors actually evaluate the space? In this episode, Zach speaks with Keith Rabois, Managing Director at Khosla Ventures and one of the most successful investors of the past two decades, about how he thinks about legal tech in the age of AI. They discuss why elite founders are suddenly flocking to legal, the risks facing application-layer startups, and what separates real opportunities from hype. The conversation also explores why Rabois invested in Spellbook, why he's skeptical of some of the biggest names in legal AI, and how changing incentives across law firms and in-house teams are reshaping the market. In this episode: Why top VCs are following talent, not verticals, into legal AI The biggest risk facing legal AI startups: speed of replication and weak moats Why in-house legal teams may be a better market than Big Law What makes Spellbook compelling, and why contracts are the real opportunity How AI is challenging traditional software economics and long-term value Learn More: Keith - https://www.khoslaventures.com/team/keith-rabois Zach - https://www.legallydisrupted.com/   Follow Along: Keith - https://www.linkedin.com/in/keith Zach - linkedin.com/in/zachabramowitz

This Day in Legal History: Seventeenth Amendment RatifiedOn April 8, 1913, the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution became part of the Constitution after receiving the necessary number of state ratifications. This amendment fundamentally changed the method of selecting U.S. senators, shifting the power from state legislatures directly to voters. Prior to its adoption, senators were chosen by state lawmakers, a process that had increasingly drawn criticism for corruption and political deadlock. Reformers argued that legislative selection allowed special interests to exert undue influence over Senate seats. The amendment emerged during the Progressive Era, a period marked by widespread efforts to make government more democratic and transparent. By mandating direct elections, it aimed to increase accountability and restore public trust in the federal government. The change also reduced the frequency of vacancies caused by legislative gridlock in the states. Supporters viewed the amendment as a necessary correction to a system that had strayed from democratic principles. Critics, however, warned that it weakened the role of states within the federal structure. The ratification process itself reflected strong public pressure for reform across many states. Over time, the amendment reshaped the political dynamics of the Senate, making senators more responsive to public opinion. It also aligned the Senate more closely with the House of Representatives in terms of democratic legitimacy. Today, the Seventeenth Amendment remains a cornerstone of how Americans participate in federal elections, illustrating the enduring impact of Progressive Era reforms.Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said that Donald Trump has both the right and responsibility to influence federal investigations, including those involving people Trump views as adversaries. Speaking publicly for the first time since taking the role, Blanche rejected claims that the Justice Department was improperly targeting Trump's opponents. He argued that a president is expected to guide national priorities, even when that includes investigations tied to personal or political conflicts. The Justice Department has recently pursued multiple investigations involving individuals connected to past inquiries into Trump, as well as political opponents and donors. Some of these efforts have faced resistance in court, with judges and grand juries limiting or dismissing certain cases. Blanche pointed to past prosecutions against Trump as justification, saying the president is seeking accountability for what he views as misuse of the legal system.Blanche's appointment followed Trump's firing of former Attorney General Pam Bondi, reportedly due to frustration over the pace and results of investigations. Blanche did not say whether he wants to remain in the role permanently, emphasizing that the decision rests with Trump. He also indicated he would step aside if asked, expressing loyalty to the president.Acting DOJ chief Blanche says Trump has ‘right' to influence investigations | ReutersYale Law School lost its long-held No. 1 position in the latest U.S. News & World Report law school rankings, marking the first time in 36 years it has not topped the list. Stanford Law School now holds the sole No. 1 spot, while Yale is tied for second with University of Chicago Law School. A slight drop in Yale's employment rate for graduates appears to have contributed to the shift, though other metrics like bar passage and LSAT scores remained stable. The rankings also saw broader changes among the traditionally top 14 law schools, known as the “T-14.” University of California, Berkeley School of Law and Georgetown University Law Center both fell out of that group, while Cornell Law School and Vanderbilt University Law School moved up in the rankings. Other schools, including University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and University of Virginia School of Law, saw smaller gains, while Harvard Law School remained steady. These fluctuations reflect changes in the ranking methodology introduced in recent years after several top schools, including Yale and Berkeley, criticized the system. The updated approach relies more heavily on data reported to the American Bar Association, making small differences in employment and bar passage rates more influential.Yale loses longtime No. 1 spot on latest US law school ranking | ReutersAI startups are increasingly targeting law students as part of a broader effort to capture the legal services market. Companies like Harvey AI and Legora are offering free access and training at top law schools, hoping students will continue using their tools once they enter law firms and corporate legal roles. This strategy comes as the legal AI sector expands rapidly, fueled by advances in generative AI since the rise of ChatGPT.These startups compete with established providers like LexisNexis and Westlaw, which have long dominated legal research and are now integrating AI into their platforms. While legacy companies rely on proprietary legal databases, newer entrants build tools on large language models and focus on tasks like drafting, research, and litigation preparation. Some partnerships have even emerged between startups and traditional providers to combine strengths.Law students are already using these tools for exam preparation, memo writing, and simulating legal arguments. Schools and companies also view this exposure as a way to teach both the benefits and risks of AI, including issues like inaccurate or “hallucinated” outputs. The broader goal is to create familiarity early, making future lawyers more likely to adopt these tools in practice.Other legal tech companies, including Clio and Spellbook, are pursuing similar partnerships, expanding access across hundreds of law schools. As competition grows, early access and training are becoming key battlegrounds for shaping the next generation of legal professionals.AI startups court law students in fight for lawyer market | Reuters This is a public episode. Can't forget to do a solo one-shot for spooky month, so here is my one-player one-shot experience of Spellbook by DValeris a.k.a. Edaureen Muhamad Nor! This game is based on a familiar game from last year's holiday one-shots, Bucket Of Bolts by Jason Price and uses the Lost & Found SRD to simulate the life of a sentient spellbook that is past down through the hands of witches over three Acts. It was a very fun session and I fully admit I fall hard into stereotypical Rene tropes (sorry not sorry).   Definitely give this and more of Edaureen's games a look!   Also, shout out and check out friend of the show C.R. This episode is a conversation with Spellbook co-founder Scott Stevenson about intersection of technology and creativity. Spellbook is a AI contract co-pilot for transactional lawyers that plugs into Microsoft Word. Despite founding a legal technology company, Scott is not a lawyer but is computer engineer by training. As a kid Scott was into video games and in fourth grade he talked his parents into getting him a computer because he wanted to figure out how to create them. By middle school he was building websites and eventually landed an internship at Electronic Arts. Scott is also interested in electronic music and he launched his first start up, Mune, with a music professor, to create a whole new musical instrument that combined the power of digital music with an acoustic instrument. It was during his time at Mune that Scott started to think about building a legal tech company. After he got his first legal bill he figured there might be a more efficient and less expensive way to do legal work. So he and lawyer buddy founded Rally, a document automation and templating engine for law firms which later begat Spellbook, but he funny thing about Spellbook, it was originally conceived as a marketing idea to generate leads for Rally.   Things We Talk About in This Episode   Mune (Scott's Digital Instrument Startup) Episode Credits Editing and Production: Grant Blackstock Theme Music: Home Base (Instrumental Version) by TA2MI

Scott Stevenson is the CEO and co-founder of Spellbook, a legal tech company transforming how attorneys review contracts with AI. Since launching in 2018, Spellbook's AI copilot has been adopted by more than 1,700 legal teams and helps review over a million contracts annually. Scott recently led the company through a $20 million Series A backed by Inovia Capital, Thomson Reuters Ventures, The Legaltech Fund, and others. Before Spellbook, he founded Mune, a startup at the intersection of music and technology, and holds a BS in Computer Engineering from Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador. In this conversation, we discuss:Scott Stevenson's journey from building electronic instruments to launching Spellbook, the world's first generative AI copilot for lawyers. Why contracts, not court cases, were the ideal entry point for legal AI and how Spellbook now helps 3,000+ legal teams review over a million contracts a year. How AI is expanding access to legal services by reducing costs and enabling lawyers to serve the 70% of clients who previously couldn't afford help. Why AI won't replace lawyers and how tools like Spellbook enhance human judgment rather than automate legal decisions. Why now may be the best time to enter the legal field as AI eliminates drudgery and creates more room for strategy and client work. What product-market fit really looks like and how Scott found it after testing more than 100 hypotheses before landing on a solution that clicked. Why the best AI products embrace controlled chaos over rigid structure and how leaning into complexity reflects how the real world actually works.Resources:Subscribe to the AI & The Future of Work NewsletterConnect with Scott on LinkedInAI fun fact articleOn How to Build an AI platform that's growing faster than OpenAI

Send us a textINTRODUCTION:De'Vannon discusses the dangers of engaging with New Age rhetoric and spell books without being protected by God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. He emphasizes the deceptive nature of Lucifer, who can trick people into thinking they're moving forward while actually leading them astray. De'Vannon shares a vision where he saw God bring the universe down to its knees as a warning against venerating it above Him. De'Vannon also discusses the duality of the drag spirit, respect for the drag community, and the serious spiritual consequences of misusing spiritual gifts. He emphasizes the high accountability platform holders have before Yahweh and criticizes the mainstream use of terms like 'universe' which leads people away from Christ. The show touches on the queer community's prosperity and the spiritual gifts God has bestowed upon them. Finally, De'Vannon calls for individual authenticity and a personal relationship with God via Christ, while criticizing the church's mishandling of the queer community and New Age spiritual practices that don't recognize Christ's supremacy.Playlists: https://music.apple.com/profile/DeVannonSeraphinoWebsite: https://www.SexDrugsAndJesus.comINCLUDED IN THIS EPISODE (But not limited to):·      Spellbook and Literature Warnings.·      God is Going to Overthrow the Idol that has Become the “Universe.”·      God Laughs in the Face of Pantheons.·      The Spirit of Drag.·      Drag Queen Accountability.·      The Power of Subtle Influence.·      Celebrity Accountability to Yahweh.·      Yahweh's Reckoning Against the Church for Queer Abuse.·      A Relationship with Christ is Necessary for Heaven.·      A Warning To Shamans and Spiritual Leaders.·      God Favors the Queer Community.·      Miracles are Happening.·      Chosen Family was Jesus' Idea.·      TIME IS OVER.CONNECT WITH DE'VANNON SERÁPHINO:TikTok: https://shorturl.at/nqyJ4YouTube: https://bit.ly/3daTqCMLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devannonEmail: SDJPodcastNewYork@Gmail.comThanks for listening!!!
